There’s an extra responsibility that comes with coaching the St. John’s men’s basketball team, one rooted in the precedent that Hall of Famer Lou Carnesecca established during his legendary run. “For St. John’s fans, you’ll always tell stories about Lou because of what he represented. I along with all the other coaches who coached here are caretakers of Lou’s legacy. That’s all we are,” Red Storm coach Rick Pitino said Monday on WFAN following Carnesecca’s death at the age of 99 last week . “We’re caretakers at St. John’s of what Lou built and I’m very proud to be a caretaker of Lou’s legacy.” Pitino spoke glowingly of Carnesecca, with their decades-long relationship spanning to when the two opposed each other in the Big East in the 1980s . Over the past two years, the two bonded while Pitino attempts to follow in Carnesecca’s footsteps and guide the program to its first Final Four since Carnesecca did so in 1985. “Lou epitomized (to St. John’s) what John Wooden was to UCLA ... or Mike (Krzyzewski) is to Duke,” Pitino said. “He epitomized all the great things about St. John’s. Humble, hardworking, just cared about the players more than himself. Just a special, special man. “ Pitino and Carnesecca roamed opposing Big East sidelines spanning the 1985-86 and 1986-87 seasons when Carnesecca neared retirement and Pitino guided Providence. The younger coach described the St. John’s icon as “very intense,” noting that Carnesecca “hated officials” and would never sit down. He recalled one game when Providence edged St. John’s at the buzzer — likely the Friars’ 79-78 win on Feb. 14, 1987 at MSG — and how Carnesecca went “ballistic” since he believed one second remained. Pitino admits Carnesecca was probably right, but he sent his players to the showers to avoid continuing the game. “Great games, great coach, great person. One of the few people I’ve met in my life in the coaching profession that nobody ever said a bad word about,” Pitino said. “We could write a book with the bad words about me, but with Lou, nobody would ever say a bad word. Kind person, giving person. “When you beat him, he gave you that one handshake, looked you in the eye and said, ‘Good luck.’ When he beat you, he looked you in the eye and he shook with two hands, he took the other hand and put it on your forearm. He was much happier at that moment.” The two didn’t have to worry about clock differences once Pitino took the reigns in Jamaica last year, but the old veteran still let his thoughts be known. Pitino noted how Carnesecca developed a reputation for running practices that lasted three to three-and-a-half hours, yet there was Carnesecca last summer asking him if he believed in water breaks. Carnesecca also told Pitino that a St. John’s coach should follow tradition and wear long pants, while Pitino prefers donning shorts when the team practices. “All of New York should toast Lou,” Pitino said. “St. John’s is built on kids that don’t have money .... its hardworking people that need a break in life and we try to lift people out of poverty, that’s the mission of St. John’s, and nobody exemplified what the standards of St. John’s stood for more than Lou Carnesecca.”Premier League leaders Liverpool ruthlessly exploited another slip by their title rivals to move seven points clear with a match in hand after a 3-1 win over Leicester. For Makenzie Gilkison, spelling is such a struggle that a word like rhinoceros might come out as “rineanswsaurs” or sarcastic as “srkastik.” The 14-year-old from suburban Indianapolis can sound out words, but her dyslexia makes the process so draining that she often struggles with comprehension. “I just assumed I was stupid,” she recalled of her early grade school years. But assistive technology powered by artificial intelligence has helped her keep up with classmates. Last year, Makenzie was named to the National Junior Honor Society. She credits a customized AI-powered chatbot, a word prediction program and other tools that can read for her. “I would have just probably given up if I didn’t have them,” she said. Artificial intelligence holds the promise of helping countless other students with a range of visual, speech, language and hearing impairments to execute tasks that come easily to others. Schools everywhere have been wrestling with how and where to incorporate AI , but many are fast-tracking applications for students with disabilities. Getting the latest technology into the hands of students with disabilities is a priority for the U.S. Education Department, which has told schools they must consider whether students need tools like text-to-speech and alternative communication devices. New rules from the Department of Justice also will require schools and other government entities to make apps and online content accessible to those with disabilities. There is concern about how to ensure students using it — including those with disabilities — are still learning. Students can use artificial intelligence to summarize jumbled thoughts into an outline, summarize complicated passages, or even translate Shakespeare into common English. And computer-generated voices that can read passages for visually impaired and dyslexic students are becoming less robotic and more natural. “I’m seeing that a lot of students are kind of exploring on their own, almost feeling like they’ve found a cheat code in a video game,” said Alexis Reid, an educational therapist in the Boston area who works with students with learning disabilities. But in her view, it is far from cheating : “We’re meeting students where they are.” Ben Snyder, a 14-year-old freshman from Larchmont, New York, who was recently diagnosed with a learning disability, has been increasingly using AI to help with homework. “Sometimes in math, my teachers will explain a problem to me, but it just makes absolutely no sense,” he said. “So if I plug that problem into AI, it’ll give me multiple different ways of explaining how to do that.” He likes a program called Question AI. Earlier in the day, he asked the program to help him write an outline for a book report — a task he completed in 15 minutes that otherwise would have taken him an hour and a half because of his struggles with writing and organization. But he does think using AI to write the whole report crosses a line. “That’s just cheating,” Ben said. Schools have been trying to balance the technology’s benefits against the risk that it will do too much. If a special education plan sets reading growth as a goal, the student needs to improve that skill. AI can’t do it for them, said Mary Lawson, general counsel at the Council of the Great City Schools. But the technology can help level the playing field for students with disabilities, said Paul Sanft, director of a Minnesota-based center where families can try out different assistive technology tools and borrow devices. “There are definitely going to be people who use some of these tools in nefarious ways. That’s always going to happen,” Sanft said. “But I don’t think that’s the biggest concern with people with disabilities, who are just trying to do something that they couldn’t do before.” Another risk is that AI will track students into less rigorous courses of study. And, because it is so good at identifying patterns , AI might be able to figure out a student has a disability. Having that disclosed by AI and not the student or their family could create ethical dilemmas, said Luis Pérez, the disability and digital inclusion lead at CAST, formerly the Center for Applied Specialized Technology. Schools are using the technology to help students who struggle academically, even if they do not qualify for special education services. In Iowa, a new law requires students deemed not proficient — about a quarter of them — to get an individualized reading plan. As part of that effort, the state’s education department spent $3 million on an AI-driven personalized tutoring program. When students struggle, a digital avatar intervenes. More AI tools are coming soon. The U.S. National Science Foundation is funding AI research and development. One firm is developing tools to help children with speech and language difficulties. Called the National AI Institute for Exceptional Education, it is headquartered at the University of Buffalo, which did pioneering work on handwriting recognition that helped the U.S. Postal Service save hundreds of millions of dollars by automating processing. “We are able to solve the postal application with very high accuracy. When it comes to children’s handwriting, we fail very badly,” said Venu Govindaraju, the director of the institute. He sees it as an area that needs more work, along with speech-to-text technology, which isn’t as good at understanding children’s voices, particularly if there is a speech impediment. Sorting through the sheer number of programs developed by education technology companies can be a time-consuming challenge for schools. Richard Culatta, CEO of the International Society for Technology in Education, said the nonprofit launched an effort this fall to make it easier for districts to vet what they are buying and ensure it is accessible. Makenzie wishes some of the tools were easier to use. Sometimes a feature will inexplicably be turned off, and she will be without it for a week while the tech team investigates. The challenges can be so cumbersome that some students resist the technology entirely. But Makenzie’s mother, Nadine Gilkison, who works as a technology integration supervisor at Franklin Township Community School Corporation in Indiana, said she sees more promise than downside. In September, her district rolled out chatbots to help special education students in high school. She said teachers, who sometimes struggled to provide students the help they needed, became emotional when they heard about the program. Until now, students were reliant on someone to help them, unable to move ahead on their own. “Now we don’t need to wait anymore,” she said. These days, the “F” in LAFC ought to stand for “France.” Free agent Jeremy Ebobisse became the Los Angeles Football Club’s fifth Frenchman on Monday, as the roster takes shape early in the offseason. The deal runs through 2027, with a club option for 2028. “Jeremy is a proven forward in our league who has scored goals and been a meaningful contributor to his teams throughout his career,” LAFC co-president and general manager John Thorrington said in a statement announcing the signing. “We are incredibly excited to welcome Jeremy to strengthen our attack as we continue in our ambitions to compete for multiple trophies in 2025. Dr Manmohan Singh - former Prime Minister of India, veteran Congress leader, noted economist, technocrat and the architect of India's liberalised economy that achieved high growth from a phenomenal low of the balance of payments crisis, died on Thursday night. Singh, who had been ailing for a while, breathed his last at Delhi's All-India Institute of Medical Sciences this evening. He was 92. The relationship between Sonia Gandhi, the Congress party matriarch, and former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is a unique chapter in Indian politics. Their partnership, spanning over two decades, is marked by mutual respect, trust, and a shared vision for the party and country's progress. As they prepare to go before the U.S. Senate for confirmation, Pete Hegseth , Tulsi Gabbard, Kash Patel, Matt Gaetz — until Gaetz withdrew from consideration — and others have been facing questions over their previous actions and words that have raised doubts about their fitness for the job. Yet in every case, the man who appointed them, President-elect Donald Trump , has done or said things far more egregious during his previous term in office and over his subsequent three-and-a-half-year effort to return to the White House. American voters narrowly returned him to office anyway — meaning senators will now have to decide whether Trump’s appointees should be held to a higher standard than Trump himself. “This question breaks my heart,” said Jennifer Horn, the former chair of New Hampshire’s Republican Party who broke from Trump soon after he was first elected in 2016. Trump campaign and transition officials did not respond to HuffPost’s queries. Critics of Trump’s choice for defense secretary point to allegations of Hegseth’s treatment of women, including an allegation he raped a woman in 2017, in an encounter Hegseth has said was consensual. Yet Trump himself was found by a New York jury to have sexually abused writer E. And while Patel has aggressively spread lies and conspiracy theories about the 2020 election and promised vengeance against Trump’s critics, Trump himself is the prime mover behind the violence of Jan. 6, 2021, without whom the day would have passed without notice. Throughout his 2024 campaign, he has vowed revenge against the justice system that tried to hold him to account. “The fact that Donald Trump has been re-elected is a devastating blow to democracy, and his nominees for the highest positions in government are a reflection of that,” Horn said. “But whether or not these unqualified, Putin advocates are actually seated lies in the hands of the Senate. If they are accepted, it will be a measure of the character and integrity of each Republican senator.” Whether the Senate will hold Trump’s appointees to a higher standard than voters held Trump himself could be in the hands of a small group of Republican senators who have never been great fans of the man who took over their party over the past decade. Erick Erickson, a conservative radio talk show host who supported Trump, despite misgivings, on the belief that American democracy is stronger than Trump, said the Senate needs to evaluate appointees based on what it believes is good for the country. “The president is chosen by an Electoral College selected by the people. His appointees are confirmed by a Senate, some of whom were chosen in 2020, some of whom were chosen in 2022, and some of whom were chosen in 2024, all of whom have their own standards and opinions, which may or may not be the same as the people who support Trump,” he said. “The Constitution still matters and remains a robust check on the powers of all three branches of government.” The prevailing theory on presidential appointments, generally shared by both Democrats and Republicans, is that presidents should be able to have the leadership team of their choosing. That, however, has been tempered by senators’ desire not to give a president a blank check. In 1992, senators forced Democratic president Bill Clinton’s first two choices for attorney general, Zoe Baird and Kimba Wood, to withdraw after revelations that they had hired undocumented immigrants to care for their children. Thirty-two years later, former Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz withdrew as Trump’s attorney general pick after Republican senators said they expected to see a still-secret House Ethics Committee report that reportedly details Gaetz’s payments to a 17-year-old girl for allegedly having sex with him at a drug-fueled party. Gaetz has denied he did anything wrong or illegal. Gaetz, in any event, has not been found liable for sexual abuse by a jury following a trial, as Trump has. Nor was he described by notorious accused child sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein as his “closest friend,” as Trump was. How hard Republican senators, a number of whom were publicly warning against Gaetz’s nomination, will push against some of the others is unclear. At the Capitol Tuesday, Utah’s newly elected John Curtis, like many of his GOP colleagues, largely avoided questions about specific nominees but agreed that Trump’s wishes mattered a great deal. “He gets a lot of deference,” Curtis said. Others, though, made clear they believed Trump deserves complete deference. Idaho’s Michael Crapo said he was fine with whatever Trump wants, even if he submits names that have not undergone an FBI background check, as has traditionally been done prior to receiving a security clearance. “My position is what President Trump decides to do is what I will support,” he told reporters on Monday. George Conway, who supported Trump’s candidacy in 2016 and was briefly considering a job in his first administration but has since become a vocal critic, said he doubts Senate leaders will have much appetite for a fight with Trump. “What they should do and what they will do will be different,” he said. “I think they may try to torpedo a couple of them and call it a day.” To former Republican Rep. Joe Walsh, who also turned against Trump early in his first term, the very idea of rejecting Trump’s nominees for behaviors that Americans have made clear they are OK with in Trump is absurd. “There should be no objections. Pete Hegseth is Donald Trump. Tulsi Gabbard is Donald Trump. However, men too are victims of GBV, and their experiences are often overlooked. Mr Rex Aiku, a 55-year-old father of two, endured an abusive relationship for over five years. His wife regularly subjected him to physical and emotional abuse, leaving him feeling trapped and helpless after losing his job and being unable to provide for his family. “I was ashamed to admit that I was being abused by a woman. I felt like I was supposed to be the strong one, the protector, but I was the one being hurt,” Aiku said. His wife often used his masculinity against him, telling him that he was weak and that no one would believe him if he reported the abuse. This left Aiku feeling isolated and unsure of where to seek help. Similarly, Ade Michael, a 48-year-old entrepreneur, was sexually assaulted by a male colleague at a party. The experience left him feeling shaken and confused, unsure of how to process his emotions. “I didn’t know how to react. I felt like I had been emasculated, like I had lost my manhood. I didn’t know who to turn to or how to talk about it,” Michael said. Michael struggled to come to terms with his experience, feeling failed by societal expectations of masculinity. He eventually found support through a men’s support group, where he connected with others who had experienced similar trauma. Experts argue that Aiku and Michael’s stories reflect the need for support and resources tailored specifically for men affected by GBV. While gender-based violence in Nigeria affects both men and women, men are often overlooked in discussions around support and intervention. Although the focus has largely been on female victims, a growing awareness is emerging about the challenges faced by male survivors. Studies show that men experience various forms of GBV, including physical, sexual, and emotional abuse, but these cases are often underreported due to societal stigma and expectations of masculinity. For instance, a WHO report on violence and health revealed that male survivors of sexual and domestic violence face barriers in accessing support, as societal norms discourage them from reporting abuse. It is common for male victims to be dismissed or not taken seriously, which only exacerbates their trauma. However, organisations such as the Women at Risk International Foundation (WARIF) and the Mirabel Centre in Lagos have begun offering services to men, providing them with counselling and legal support. Although data on male victims of GBV in Nigeria remains limited, initiatives are underway to improve reporting and response systems. These efforts include strengthening the capacities of Sexual Assault Referral Centres (SARCs), which provide medical and psychosocial support to survivors of violence, and ensuring these services are inclusive of men. “While numerous organisations focus on helping female survivors, men often fall through the cracks. “Men are socialised to be strong and stoic, to not show emotion or vulnerability,” explained Dr Emmanuel Oke, a psychologist specialising in male survivors of GBV. According to Oke, this social conditioning makes it difficult for men to seek help or discuss their experiences. Oke stressed the importance of more resources and support services designed to meet the unique needs of men. This includes counselling, support groups, and advocacy initiatives that acknowledge the specific challenges and barriers men face in seeking help. In response to these challenges, the Life After Abuse Foundation (LAAF), a non-governmental organisation, has called for the establishment of Nigeria’s first Ministry of Men’s Affairs to address the pressing needs of men. LAAF’s President, Ms Halima Layeni, believes that such a ministry would advance gender equality by ensuring that men receive the same level of support, opportunities, and empowerment as other demographics. “This ministry would be a fundamental step towards rectifying the persistent neglect of men’s unique challenges in society,” Layeni said. She noted that men in Nigeria face numerous overlooked issues, including violence, domestic abuse, and assault, all of which remain underreported due to entrenched societal stigmas. Moreover, men in Nigeria are dealing with alarmingly high rates of depression and suicide, exacerbated by societal expectations and a lack of targeted support. Layeni also pointed out that economic instability worsens these challenges, with many men being deprived of opportunities for skill development and economic empowerment. “Cultural norms often prevent men from seeking help, leading to unaddressed mental health issues and violence. “Despite these struggles, men continue to fulfil their roles as providers, breadwinners, husbands, and fathers, often carrying these burdens in silence,” Layeni added. She argues that a dedicated ministry would bridge these gaps, offering targeted support and reducing the stigma surrounding men seeking help. In Lagos State, the Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) has called for men to join efforts in curbing sexual and domestic violence in the state. The Executive Secretary of DSVA, Mrs Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, stressed the importance of engaging men to help speak to their peers and raise awareness about sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV). “Two weeks ago, we heard of a man using a hot iron on his son’s buttocks. “The boy had to be rescued and placed in a home provided by the Ministry of Youth and Social Development; the suspects have been arraigned. “We need to be proactive, engage the community, and raise awareness about the different forms of abuse,” Vivour-Adeniyi said. She also urged the public to understand that ignorance of the law is no excuse and emphasised the importance of support services available for victims of SGBV. Also, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has reaffirmed its commitment to addressing SGBV through continuous sensitisation and training of law enforcement officers. Mrs Yemisi Akhile, Deputy Director of the Lagos State NHRC, stated that the commission ensures law enforcement is equipped to handle SGBV cases sensitively and effectively. “Survivors need to feel safe and comfortable in assisting the prosecution, particularly in rape cases, which are often associated with stigma. “We ensure that the justice system operates fairly and that survivors are not exploited after they have been referred to the police,” she said. Akhile stated that more must be done to address the unique challenges faced by male victims, such as improving data collection and establishing tailored support services. Stakeholders say this would not only help male survivors heal but also create a more inclusive approach to tackling GBV in Nigeria. They argue that by acknowledging the experiences of male survivors and providing them with the necessary support, there will be a more inclusive and supportive society for all survivors of GBV.
Star third baseman Nolan Arenado seems to want to be a Los Angeles Dodger. However, Teoscar Hernández ’s recent re-signing with the Dodgers seems to close the door on that possibility this offseason. Arenado, who hails from Southern California, will have to hope the St. Louis Cardinals can negotiate a trade with a different team from his state if he wants to return home. Nolan Arenado Not a Trade Fit for Dodgers The Dodgers were one of six teams on Arenado’s wish list as the Cardinals started shopping him this offseason. His preferred destination is rumored to be the Dodgers. He caused speculation about it with a cryptic Instagram post with the song “Dodger Blue” by Kendrick Lamar. The two teams have had trade conversations around Arenado in the past, most publicly at the 2023 trade deadline. However, The Athletic has reported that the Dodgers have not considered trading for Arenado this offseason. Dodgers general manager Brandon Gomes publicly committed to Max Muncy as the team’s third baseman in 2025 at the Winter Meetings. While Arenado’s agent has said he is willing to switch to first base to make a deal possible, the Dodgers have that spot filled too with Freddie Freeman . Muncy is a much cheaper option at third base than Arenado. The incumbent third baseman stands to earn $24 million over the next two years compared to the $64 million still on Arenado’s contract. Muncy has also been more productive of late. In 2024, Muncy had an OPS of .852 compared to Arenado’s .719, although he missed a majority of last season due to injury. He played 79 fewer games than Arenado. With that, Muncy still managed a better WAR at 3.0 to Arenado’s 2.5. Even with the discrepancy in games played, Muncy hit just one fewer home run than Arenado in 2024. Hernández Signing Closes the Door Hernández’s three-year, $66 million deal with the Dodgers likely puts the organization back ahead of the New York Yankees for top payroll in 2025 for now. While Hernández and Arenado don’t play the same position, the signing likely extinguishes any rumor of Arenado ending up with the Dodgers. Arenado’s best hope was for the Dodgers to lose a high-impact bat and seek to replace it for a 2025 campaign. Even with LA’s extravagant ways, it’s hard to rationalize trading for an expensive player when there doesn’t seem to be an everyday spot for him defensively or in the lineup, especially with the DH duties going almost exclusively to superstar Shohei Ohtani . The organization showed it is willing to take on some of the money on Arenado’s deal in the declined trade to the Astros. The Cardinals were reportedly set to take on $15 million of Arenado’s remaining contract. Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak told reporters during the Winter Meetings that it still is a possibility that Arenado will return to the club in 2025. The organization is motivated to cut costs this offseason , though Mozeliak said there are other ways of doing that. The situation sets up a game of chicken. The Cardinals may have to fold some of their expected return or Arenado may have to widen his acceptable trade partner list. If neither side blinks, Arenado will likely report to Jupiter for Cardinals spring training.
