This study, led by researchers from the Center for Advanced Technology and Communication in Health (CATCH) at the CUNY Graduate School of Public Health and Health Policy (CUNY SPH) and the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD), contributes to the growing body of evidence suggesting that targeted interventions can have a profound impact on the health of future generations while also alleviating financial burdens on healthcare systems. Unfortunately, studies also show significant disparities between the physical activity levels of male and female youth. For example, only 15% of female participants in grades nine to 11 as compared to 31% of their male counterparts met aerobic guidelines, as shown by the 2011-2019 Youth Risk Behavior Survey. There are even greater disparities in sports participation. A 2019 study found that 54.1% of female participants as compared to 60.4% of male participants participate in sports. To simulate what would happen if these disparities were reduced to different degrees, CATCH and NIMHD researchers decided to utilize a computational model of all the youth in the U.S. The computer simulation model represents all the six-to-17-year-olds in the U.S. as virtual agents starting with different ages in the model, and then simulated the daily physical activities of each youth, their growth, the impact of the physical activity on their health, the different chronic medical conditions that could emerge, and the resulting costs over time. "This study shows how eliminating sex disparities in physical activity and sports would not only be the fair thing to do, it would also be economically beneficial for society," explains Bruce Y. Lee, MD, MBA, the study's senior author and professor of health policy and management at CUNY SPH. "Eventually efforts to increase physical activity and sport participation for girls and women could end up paying for themselves and more." While there are different potential ways of reducing sex disparities in physical activity, reducing sex disparities in sports participation may be the easiest and most effective way. Sports-related interventions have clearer implementation locations such as schools and athletic associations, along with additional funding pathways apart from school budgets (e.g., recreation centers, community partners, and more). The Public Health Informatics, Computational, and Operations Research (PHICOR) team that is the core of CATCH has been part of the Aspen Institute's Project Play since 2016. Project Play has made ongoing efforts to reduce sex disparities in sports participation such as developing a Youth Sports Playbook that indicates a number of interventions that can get more female youth playing sports, including encouraging sports sampling, revitalizing in town leagues, carving out time at fields and gyms during prime hours each week for kids to engage in pickup or free play in their neighborhood, and recruiting female coaches who can serve as mentors and role models. "Sports participation disparities among boys and girls can exist due to fewer opportunities for girls to play sports, especially in high school, and less social support. Our study shows that the cost savings of increasing girls' sports participation can justify investing in the changes needed to increase it," says Jessie Heneghan, MCP, co-author and senior analyst at PHICOR. Several formerly deep holes had filled in, their deep swirling eddies gone. Still, it’s necessary to fish the stream carefully; even smaller current breaks and runs can harbor larger fish. After covering half a mile of stream I approached my favorite spot; hoping it still existed. The high waters had shifted the far bank some, but the same deep eddy still swirled slowly. Another stump had washed in, adding additional cover. After carefully working my way to the head of the hole I stood quietly for several minutes before casting, letting things settle down a bit. When water is this clear the fish see any careless motions. Not having had a hit or even seen a fish up to this point, the chances of success were diming. However, if I was going to catch a trout, this was the spot to do so. My small silver spoon flashed through the deep waters for several casts, but no fish struck or followed. Well, there’s no guarantee this time of year. Turning, I fired a cast upstream and brought the spoon swinging down the current in a lazy arc. Extending my arms and rod in front of me gained just enough space for the spoon to clear the stump’s tangled roots. Glad to avoid snagging up, I was just about to lift the spoon from the water when to my complete shock a big brown trout turned from underneath the stump, shot forward and grabbed the spoon less than three feet from shore! Shocked, it took me a second to recover my wits and set the hook. The trout wallowed on the surface, spun and shot into deeper water, bending my UL double. The water temperature may have just been over freezing, but the big brown made several powerful runs into the current. My four-pound line held thank goodness, turning the brown downstream away from those tangled roots. After a prolonged battle I finally netted her, despite falling on the icy rocks at one point. The brown was a beauty, 24-inches long, weighing 5-pounds, a colorful, sleek, heavy trout. Suddenly the world seemed to warm; the wind not as chilling, my hands not as cold, the sky bluer, for my heart was filled with joy. Continuing on and fishing the last stretch of stream I had two smaller trout strike. Both were lying in quiet, deep eddies out of the direct current. Missed hits are not unusual in winter fishing, the trout are cold and your reflexes slower. If you are lucky, you’ll have one solid hit, hope you don’t miss it! I am thinking it’s about time to try for some winter steelhead, but the low waters certainly make things a little more challenging. No matter how you look at it, winter fishing guarantees two things: it will get you out of the house and your hands will be freezing at some point in the trip. Good luck and remember, don’t forget a hand towel to keep your hands dry!The shares of Canara Bank, India’s fourth-largest PSU Bank by loan book, have been on a bull run ever since the rebound after Covid-lows. From the lows of March 2020 to the recent highs in early June this year, the stock has grown about 8.5 times at a staggering CAGR of 66 per cent. This comes on the back of balance sheet clean-up, resulting in improvements in asset quality. The gross NPA (GNPA) ratio, which was at 8.8 per cent as of FY19 and peaked at 8.9 per cent in FY21, has declined to 3.7 per cent as of Q2 FY25. The return on equity (RoE) also has improved in due course from 1.4 per cent as of FY19 to 20.4 per cent (H1 FY25 annualised). The stock has corrected from its recent peak of ₹128.25 (June 3, 2024) by 22 per cent and now trades at ₹100.40. At the said peak, the stock commanded a price-to-book value (P/B) multiple of 1.2 times. It now trades at a P/B multiple of 0.9 times. A conservative sum-of-the-parts (SOTP) valuation reveals a target price of ₹113, showing limited upside. At this price, the P/B multiple (on a consolidated basis) works out to 1x. The standalone banking business constitutes 93 per cent of the target price and we have valued it at a conservative 1x P/B. This is because PSU peers, such as SBI, have better asset quality metrics for a similar RoE. SBI trades at a P/B multiple of 1.6 times with an RoE of 21.8 per cent (H1 FY25 annualised) and a GNPA ratio of 2.1 per cent. Other key group entities included in the SOTP valuation are Canara Robeco AMC, Canara HSBC Life Insurance and Can Fin Homes. The AMC and life insurance entities are smaller compared with their key listed peers. Hence, their multiples in the SOTP valuation are assigned at a 30 per cent discount to the average multiples of their respective listed peers. Can Fin homes is valued on an actual basis, as it is a listed entity. A 30 per cent holding company discount is ascribed to all the group entities. The bank recently announced that it has received regulatory clearances for divestment of 13 per cent and 14.5 per cent respectively in its AMC and life insurance entities. Per regulations, the bank is supposed to bring down stake in these entities to under 30 per cent by October 2029 through IPOs. The loan book constitutes 19 per cent retail loans, 24 per cent agriculture loans, 14 per cent MSME loans and corporate loans - 43 per cent. Like its PSU peers, the bank has streamlined its underwriting standards and has cleaned up its balance sheet of legacy asset-quality issues. These with respect to the corporate portfolio are noteworthy. The GNPA ratio of the corporate book was at 12.6 per cent in FY19. It has been brought down to 3.7 per cent as of Q2 FY25. This has been made possible by increasing credit to quality borrowers. The share of loans advanced to borrowers rated A and above has been taken up to 78 per cent as of Q2 FY25 from 66 per cent as of FY19. There has been an improvement in the GNPA ratio of the rest of the book as well. Retail/ Agri/ MSME GNPA ratios as of FY19 – 1.8 per cent/ 5.5 per cent/ 9.6 per cent have improved to 1.1 per cent/ 3.7 per cent/ 7.7 per cent as of Q2 FY25. While asset quality was focused on, growth wasn’t left behind. Between FY19 and FY24, the banking system (all commercial banks combined) grew its advances and deposits at CAGRs of 12 per cent and 11 per cent respectively. Canara Bank surpassed the system-level growth with CAGRs of 17 per cent each. In H1 FY25, the system-level growth in advances and deposits has been 13 per cent and 12 per cent respectively. But the same for Canara Bank has been 9.5 per cent and 9.3 per cent. The management notes that the slow growth in advances is primarily due to the shedding of low-yield corporate advances. Of such advances identified, the bank has withdrawn sanctions for about ₹40,000-crore worth loans. For FY25, the management has guided for a 11 per cent growth in loans, after accounting for such adjustments, with a focus on higher retail growth. Though this may be closer to what the system has grown so far, this fiscal, the bank’s peers SBI and Bank of Baroda (BoB) have guided for higher growth rates. SBI has guided for a 15 per cent growth, while BoB has guided for up to 14 per cent. Deposit growth, too, has been sub-system-level growth, despite the bank’s cost of deposits being a good 50 basis points higher compared with its PSU peers. Though shedding of low-yield loans and its effect on slow growth in advances can be a short-term phenomenon, inability to mobilise deposits can weigh on the growth in advances in the long term. For the full year FY25, the management has guided for a GNPA ratio of 3.5 per cent, net NPA ratio of 1.1 per cent, provision coverage ratio (PCR) of 90 per cent and credit cost of 1.1 per cent. The bank has either already achieved these metrics or is well poised to achieve them comfortably. The metrics as of Q2 FY25 stand as – 3.7 per cent, 1 per cent, 91 per cent and 1 per cent. However, the fact that such numbers are still on the higher side, compared with its peers such as SBI and BoB, justifies the absence of a premium valuation. Given the track record of the management in achieving the guided figures, long-term investors can accumulate the stock on dips. At lower levels from current price, there is more comfort in the valuation and the stock offers higher margin of safety. There can be a positive rerating as and when the management executes its guidance. Comments

Outgoing Orono Mayor Dennis Walsh appointed a new council member Monday night, despite objections from colleagues who said the move would erode trust with residents. Claire Berrett, a longtime Orono resident criticized by some as being too supportive of Walsh, took the oath of office during a contentious City Council meeting in which officials and audience members at times shouted over each other. “It’s an honor,” Berrett said during the meeting. “It feels awkward to me right now, because I wasn’t expecting this, but I will promise you this: I will always vote in the best interests of Orono and its citizens.” The selection comes as Orono is bracing for major political turnover and grappling with contentious issues like the future of its fire department . Earlier this month, voters selected a new mayor and two new council members, who are set to begin their jobs in January. One week after the election, Council Member Matt Johnson resigned with about two years left on his term. Berrett filled his seat, though it’s not yet clear how long she might be there. Orono City Attorney Soren Mattick said he expects the appointment will last through November of 2026, though he left open the possibility officials could pass a special election ordinance that somehow changes that. Incoming Mayor Bob Tunheim said he believes city leaders exceeded their authority in appointing Berrett and that a special election needs to be held. “I can’t speak for the rest of the incoming council, but I think the community will want us to move quickly to put in motion the steps necessary to hold a special election,” Tunheim said in an interview Tuesday. He added: “I intend to be professional and civil with Ms. Berrett and I look forward to working with her for the time she remains on council.” Berrett didn’t immediately respond to a message Tuesday.
