Harry Souttar will be out of action for up to a year after suffering an Achilles tendon injury, leaving the Socceroos without their star defender for remaining 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Souttar, on loan at Sheffield United from Premier League club Leicester City, suffered the injury in the Boxing Day loss to Burnley. United manager Chris Wilder confirmed the injury on Monday morning (AEDT) after their 1-1 draw with West Bromwich Albion. Know the news with the 7NEWS app: Download today “He is absolutely gutted,” Wilder told BBC Radio Sheffield. “Devastated for him, he loved it here. “Big disappointment to lose the big fella because he has been incredible.” It is a massive blow for Tony Popovic’s Socceroos ahead of their next March’s World Cup qualifying match against Indonesia in Sydney. With only four games left, Australia are second on seven points in a chaotic Group C, nine points behind leaders Japan and a point ahead of Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and China. Souttar is an essential cog in defence for the Socceroos and had just rediscovered his best self after sealing a loan move to United in the off-season. Frozen out by the Foxes last year, the 26-year-old was a central figure across 21 league matches as the Blades fought for promotion from the second-tier Championship. “Unfortunately that’s me out for a while but I wish everyone at the club all the best for the rest of the season and beyond,” Souttar posted on Instagram. “Thanks to everyone at Sheffield United, amazing club with great people.” Souttar found himself in similar circumstances in the lead-up to the 2022 World Cup, rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament in a 0-0 qualifying draw against Saudi Arabia at CommBank Stadium almost exactly three years ago. He was able to return in time to help Australia in Qatar, playing a starring role under Graham Arnold as the side reached the round of 16, where they lost 2-1 to eventual champions Argentina.Traffic citations against Dolphins' Tyreek Hill dismissed after officers no-show at hearing48 jili

BOULDER — Cam’Ron Silmon-Craig needed a few moments to soak it all in. After No. 23 Colorado’s 52-0 win over Oklahoma State to close the regular season, the Buffaloes’ senior safety sat down in between the 35- and 40-yard lines on the south side of Folsom Field. His final home game at CU was over — and he just needed a minute to take in the scene one last time . “I was there giving thanks, giving thanks to God for putting me in this position,” Silmon-Craig said. “I've been able to thrive when I got a chance to make my dreams a reality. So that was the thing I was thinking about. I was just spending my last few moments inside my favorite playground on Folsom Field. Nothing like it in the world. I wouldn't rather be anywhere else." For two years, Silmon-Craig poured everything he had into the Buffs’ program. He came to CU after two years playing for Deion Sanders at Jackson State — also playing his final two years of high school football for Coach Prime at Trinity Christian in Cedar Hill, Texas. But Silmon-Craig is originally from Alabama and grew up watching the early days of Nick Saban’s Crimson Tide dynasty. He knew he was never going to accomplish something like that in his college career, but he wanted to set the stones for something like that to happen in Boulder. “I remember the 2009 Alabama team that struck the match for the run that Alabama went on,” Silmon-Craig said. “So coming in this year, I always wanted to be the standard. I wanted to come in here and set a standard for us to live for years and years on hand. So for guys like (sophomore cornerback) DJ (McKinney), when they come back next year, they know the standard.” That standard didn’t exist when Silmon-Craig first transferred to CU. The Buffs hit rock bottom during the 1-11 season in 2022 and Coach Prime turned over both the coaching staff and the roster when he took over nearly two years ago. As Sanders often says, 2023 was about restoring hope and this season, 2024, was about restoring expectations. Mission accomplished — and it’s because of the group of seniors that played their final home game on Friday. “They're the ones who changed the game for us,” Coach Prime said. “They're the ones that impacted this wonderful learning institution. They're the ones that are responsible for the recruits that you're seeing commit. They're the ones that are responsible for the way that game was played, the way it panned out. They're the ones who put us on the map.” Coach Prime was always going to participate in the Senior Day festivities and he and his sons, quarterback Shedeur and safety Shilo, got to share their moment pregame and receive plenty of applause from the Folsom Field crowd for the final time as a trio. Colorado coach Deion Sanders, center, walks onto the field alongside sons Shilo Sanders, left, and Shedeur Sanders, during pregame Senior Day festivities at Folsom Field on Friday, Nov. 29, 2024 (Stephen Swofford, Denver Gazette) But Sanders also walked to midfield with another senior, wide receiver Jimmy Horn Jr., who didn’t have his dad in attendance due to his current incarceration in Florida. Horn turned to Sanders right before he was about to have his name called and asked Sanders if we would walk with him. “You don’t have to ask me twice,” Sanders recalled telling Horn. “Just speaking pleasantries along the way, it (was) unbelievable. “Jimmy is like my kid. I love him that much. We've talked about some personal things throughout his couple of seasons (here). I want to go with him Sunday to see his father as well.” After the Buffs were done blowing out the Cowboys to cap a 9-3 regular season, Coach Prime made sure to bring up the seniors on the elevated platform in the middle of the CU locker room and acknowledge the impact they’ve had on the program and the legacy they’re leaving behind. “I don't just coach these young men, I love these young men like they’re family, and I just want them to soar, not just from the football aspect, but as young men in life,” Sanders said.

Nebraska will be trying to preserve its perfect in-state record when it hosts South Dakota on Wednesday night in a nonconference game in Lincoln, Neb. The Cornhuskers (4-1) are 3-0 at home and also won Friday at then-No. 14 Creighton, beating their in-state rivals on the road for the second straight time. But the last time they did that, in 2022, they followed that win with a 16-point loss at Indiana to open Big Ten Conference play. "Believe me, we've addressed a lot of things," Nebraska coach Fred Hoiberg said. "A lot of people are saying some really positive things. You've got to find a way to put that behind you. I've liked how our team has responded and come back to work after that great win at Creighton." Brice Williams leads the Cornhuskers with 18.2 points per game and was one of five players in double figures against Creighton. Juwan Gary topped the list with 16. South Dakota (6-2) comes to town off a 112-50 home win Monday night over Randall, the third non-Division I school it has beat. The Coyotes' last game against a D1 opponent was Friday at Southern Indiana, resulting in a 92-83 loss. This will be South Dakota's second nonconference game against a Big Ten opponent, after a 96-77 loss at Iowa on Nov. 12. In December, the Coyotes also visit Santa Clara, hovering near the top 100 in KenPom adjusted efficiency, before jumping into Big Sky play. "The schedule is very good and that should help us," third-year South Dakota coach Eric Peterson said before the season. "We have some good nonconference games that should help prepare us for the end of the season." Nebraska has held four of its opponents to 67 or fewer points, with Saint Mary's the only one to top that number in the Cornhuskers' lone loss. Opponents are shooting 38.1 percent this season. South Dakota shot below 40 percent in its two previous games before shooting 62 percent against Randall. Isaac Bruns, who scored 20 to lead South Dakota in the Randall game, paces the Coyotes with 12.9 points per game. --Field Level Media

Cricket fans - and even Mitchell Starc - slam Marnus Labuschagne for his wild act during India's Boxing Day Test run chase Marnus Labuschagne was in slips on day five of Test India are facing a record run chase to win seesawing match By JAMES COONEY FOR DAILY MAIL AUSTRALIA and OLIVER CAFFREY AND ROGER VAUGHAN FOR AAP Published: 01:33, 30 December 2024 | Updated: 01:33, 30 December 2024 e-mail View comments Marnus Labuschagne is known for his enthusiasm on the cricket field, but one act has got on supporters' nerves during India 's Boxing Day Test run chase on Monday at the MCG. Labuschagne's gritty half-century drove Australia to a 333-run lead at the close of day four, but the Aussie was annoying fans - and even his teammate Mitchell Starc - with his constant appeals on day five. Numerous times throughout the morning, Labuschagne appealed for wickets that even his teammates didn't believe were a chance of falling. On one occasion, Starc waved Labuschagne and others away after he appealed a caught behind that missed the bat by, what commentators described as, 'a mile'. 'What on Earth is Marnus seeing here,' posted Fox Cricket to social media alongside a clip of the delivery in question. 'Marnus Labuschagne is showing he doesn't have a career post cricket as a test umpire,' wrote another. India will need to defy history and the vagaries of the MCG wicket if they are to retain the Border-Gavaskar trophy for a record-extending fifth-straight series. Australia added only a further six runs on Monday after they were bowled out for 234 in the second over of day five, giving them a lead of 339. Nathan Lyon (41) and Scott Boland (15 not out), Australia's No.10 and 11, made 61 in a crucial last-wicket stand that shot the lead past the crucial 300 mark and frustrated India. A bumper crowd is expected to come to the MCG for what could be one of Test cricket's most memorable days. A total of 299,329 fans have already attended this Boxing Day Test, with the all-time MCG record crowd of 350,534 in the 1936-37 Ashes series, when Don Bradman was king, expected to fall. Out-of-form India captain Rohit Sharma will open the batting with young superstar Yashasvi Jaiswal. If India win, they go 2-1 up in the series and as the reigning champions, they will retain the trophy regardless of the fifth Test next week in Sydney. Labuschagne is known for his enthusiasm on the field and love of cricket But the highest successful Test run chase at the ground was nearly a century ago, when England made 7-332 to beat Australia in 1928. If India win, it will be their third-highest Test run chase. It would even beat the 7-329 they posted to win the fourth Test at the Gabba in 2021 and claim the series. Australia's recovery from a shaky 6-91 late on Sunday - also helped by skipper Pat Cummins' 41 - was the latest twist in an epic Test full of momentum swings. Indian superstar Jasprit Bumrah finished with figures of 5-57, giving him nine wickets for the Test and taking him up to 30 for the series. Australia batsman Marnus Labuschagne, who played in the 2021 loss, said that Brisbane wicket was far removed from the MCG pitch. 'As the game has gone on, the bounce has gotten less and more inconsistent,' said Labuschagne, who has impressed in this Test with 72 and 70. 'So we're just getting more balls hitting the stumps, more balls skidding through. Pat Cummins snagged two wickets in a single over on Monday morning 'That makes for pretty tricky batting, because more balls are hitting the stumps from a shorter length. Balls are skidding through (and) a few balls shot up today. 'That wicket (at the Gabba three years ago) was flat ... the main part of the wicket was really nice.' Just as Nitish Kumar Reddy and Washington Sundar turned India's fortunes around on Saturday with their epic eighth-wicket stand, Reddy feels one good partnership on Monday will set up India for the win. Reddy top-scored with 114 in their first innings, his maiden Test ton. 'I feel like you need to get one partnership, one or two good partnerships,' he said. 'We can see later on the fourth day, it (the pitch) was doing a little bit more. 'But we don't need to put on more pressure, like pitches doing this or that. We need to play according to the situations.' Australia's opening bowler Mitch Starc also noted the absorbing contest was the perfect counter to some commentary that Tests should be shortened to four days. 'This why we've got five days for a Test match and really stick it up those who want four days,' he told ABC Radio.
