New Delhi, Dec 30 (IANS): Adults in their 40s must undergo regular eye check-ups to prevent vision loss from glaucoma -- a chronic eye disease that can lead to vision loss and blindness, said an ophthalmologist at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi. Taking to social media platform X, Dr. Tanuj Dada, Professor of Ophthalmology and Head of Glaucoma Services at RP Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences, said that early detection of glaucoma, which often presents no symptoms, is crucial. If left undetected it can lead to vision loss and blindness. “Glaucoma 'silent thief of sight' can cause irreversible vision loss if left undetected. If you have no symptoms and are above 40 years of age, it is recommended that you get an eye check-up every two years,” Dada said. He explained that glaucoma or kala motia is a disease of the optic nerve of the eye, which is the number one cause of irreversible blindness in the world. “Glaucoma is called the 'silent thief of vision,' because this disease often has no symptoms,” the expert said. People at risk of developing glaucoma include those with “diabetes, hypertension, and any family member with glaucoma”. “People using steroids, creams, eye drops, tablets or inhalers or have had any eye injury are also at high risk of developing this disease,” the ophthalmologist said. According to various independent studies, reports, and data from hospitals, glaucoma-related blindness continues to rise in India due lack of awareness and delay in detection. In many cases, about 90 per cent time in India, the disease goes undetected. He stressed the importance of regular eye check-ups, early diagnosis, and effective management to safeguard vision for a lifetime. “People with the risks must get annual eye checkups to rule out glaucoma. If you are above the age of 60 years, an annual check-up is required. It is a must to prevent blindness from this disease,” Dada said.In conclusion, the failure to award a penalty for Boly's foul on Traore has reignited the ongoing discussion about the effectiveness and fairness of VAR in football. NoneFRANKFURT, Germany — Finnish authorities detained a ship linked to neighboring Russia as they investigate whether it damaged a Baltic Sea power cable and several data cables, police said, in the latest incident involving disruption of key infrastructure in the region. Finnish police and border guards boarded the vessel, the Eagle S, early Thursday and took over the command bridge, Helsinki Police Chief Jari Liukku told a news conference. The vessel was being held in Finnish territorial waters, police said. The Eagle S is flagged in the Cook Islands, but was described by Finnish customs officials and the European Union’s executive commission as part of Russia’s shadow fleet of fuel tankers. Those are aging vessels with obscure ownership, acquired to evade Western sanctions amid the war in Ukraine and operating without Western-regulated insurance. Russia’s use of the vessels has raised environmental concerns about accidents given their age and uncertain insurance coverage. The Eagle S’s anchor is suspected of causing damage to the cable, Yle television reported, relying on police statements. The EU’s foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, said in a statement that the incident was “the latest in a series of suspected attacks on critical infrastructure” and commended the Finnish authorities “for their swift action in boarding the suspected vessel.” The ship “is part of Russia’s shadow fleet, which threatens security and the environment, while funding Russia’s war budget,” said Kallas, a former Estonian prime minister. “We will propose further measures, including sanctions, to target this fleet.” The Estlink-2 power cable, which brings electricity from Finland to Estonia across the Baltic Sea, went down on Wednesday. The incident follows damage to two data cables and the Nord Stream gas pipelines, both of which have been termed sabotage. The Estonian government met in emergency session over the incident. The shadow tankers “are helping Russia to earn funds that will aid Russian hybrid attacks,” Prime Minister Kristen Michal said at a news conference. “We need to improve the monitoring and protection of critical infrastructure both on land and on sea.” He said repairs to the cable could take as long as seven months. Related Articles “Repeated damage to Baltic Sea infrastructure signals a systemic threat, not mere accidents,” Estonia’s President Alar Karis said on X. “Estonia will take action to counter this threat, together with Finland and other NATO allies.” Two data cables — one running between Finland and Germany and the other between Lithuania and Sweden — were severed in November. Germany’s defense minister said officials had to assume the incident was “sabotage,” but he didn’t provide evidence or say who might have been responsible. The remark came during a speech in which he discussed hybrid warfare threats from Russia. The Nord Stream pipelines that once brought natural gas from Russia to Germany were damaged by underwater explosions in September 2022. Authorities have said the cause was sabotage and launched criminal investigations. Estonian network operator Elering says there is enough spare capacity to meet power needs on the Estonian side, public broadcaster ERR said on its website.

A two-wheeler rider was injured in the incident. Residents complained about the incident on social media after officials of various civic agencies, including the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) and the Public Works Department (PWD), reportedly refused to help them in getting the tree removed from the house. They demanded that the State government repair the damage to the building and compensate them. They also wanted it to improve coordination between civic agencies during such events and ensure the safety of residents near sites where such work was under way. Usha Krishnan, a resident of Nungambakkam, whose house was damaged in the accident said they tried calling GCC officials to remove the tree. The officials told them that the tree was on PWD land and refused to help. The residents had gathered on the streets at 7.30 p.m. on Friday in protest and dispersed around 2.30 a.m. on Saturday. On X (formerly twitter), Ms. Krishnan wrote: “Extremely stressful evening and night. Tree from Valluvarkottam fell on our house and broke many parts of the wall and the car shed. We are yet to ascertain what is the damage and financial outlay for repairs. No one from @chennaicorp has reached out.” “Tree-cutting contractors from Valluvarkottam were removing the wreckage without any official supervision. We need to be compensated accordingly. The damage to the property is estimated at ₹1 lakh. The jolly work above the compound wall, car shed, and garden were damaged. The incident happened when two senior citizens were alone at home. We are disappointed that the authorities are not reaching out to us,” Ms. Krishnan said. “On my way home from work, I was crossing Valluvarkottam around 7.30 p.m. on Friday when the trunk of the tree missed my head by a hair. The tree’s fall also caused a nearby transformer to burst. My two-wheeler was damaged. Hearing the noise from the transformer bursting, residents gathered on the road,” said S. Dhinakar, an information technology professional who was crossing the stretch when the incident occurred. Officials from Valluvarkottam said they would restore the house and repair the two-wheeler damaged in the accident.
