The National Steeplechase Association celebrated its top achievers on Nov. 23 at the Aiken Steeplechase Association’s racecourse. Held in a tent near the finish line, the Awards Gala took place following the Aiken Fall Steeplechase Handicap, which wrapped up the National Steeplechase Association’s 2024 season. The local racecourse and the National Steeplechase Association’s president, Frank Mullins, were the recipients of praise during the event. “It’s a thrill to be here in Aiken,” said the National Steeplechase Association’s director of racing, Bill Gallo. “We appreciate everything that Frank Mullins has done. The racecourse itself is extraordinary. The horsemen love coming here.” Little Trilby cruises in Holiday Cup; national race for leading trainer ends in tie during Aiken Fall Steeplechase Championship Mike Hankin, who was among the honorees, expressed a similar opinion. He said “people like Frank Mullins” are “trying very hard to make this sport better.” Then Hankin added: “This is my first time in Aiken. It’s awesome. We’ll be back this year.” Hankin, Charlie Fenwick and Charlie Noell are partners in Bruton Street-US, which was the National Steeplechase Association’s leading owner this year. Thoroughbreds raced by Bruton Street-US earned $588,200. Aiken Steeplechase Association has big plans to raise money, add facilities to racecourse Snap Decision, owned by Bruton Street-US, received the Lonesome Glory Award for being the leading money-winning jumper in 2024 with earnings of $337,500. A 10-year-old bay gelding, Snap Decision captured the American Grand National Stakes, Calvin Houghland Iroquois Stakes and Temple Gwathmey Hurdle Handicap this year. He finished third in his two other races in 2024. Jack Fisher and Leslie Young finished in a tie for leading trainer. Each saddled 29 winners. Fisher is the trainer of Snap Decision and a member of the national Thoroughbred Racing Hall of Fame. Horses saddled by Fisher earned more than $1 million in 2024 and so did those trained by Young. Graham Watters, who rode 26 winners, was the leading jockey. His mounts earned $1,256,150, a National Steeplechase Association record. “It’s been an absolute fantastic year I’ve had,” said Watters, who is Snap Decision’s regular rider. Aiken Hoofbeats Christmas Parade's new route set, registration open Dan Nevin, who rode six winners, was the leading apprentice jockey. The thoroughbreds honored in addition to Snap Decision during the Awards Gala and the categories in which they were recognized were Super Chunk, 3-year-old; Carloun, novice; Mystic Strike, timber horse, and Gold Charm, mare. The National Steeplechase Association kicked off its 2024 season with the Aiken Spring Steeplechase. The organization’s jump races were held in Virginia, Maryland and other states in addition to South Carolina. This year was the second in row in which the National Steeplechase Association’s season ended in Aiken. The Aiken Steeplechase Association’s racecourse is at 2020 Richland Ave. East. Imagine a number made up of a vast string of ones: 1111111...111. Specifically, 136 279 841 ones in a row. If we stacked up that many sheets of paper, the resulting tower would stretch into the stratosphere. If we write this number in a computer in binary form (using only ones and zeroes), it would fill up only about 16MB, no more than a short video clip. Converting to the more familiar way of writing numbers in decimal, this number – it starts out 8 816 943 275... and ends ...076 706 219 486 871 551 – would have more than 41 million digits. It would fill 20 000 pages in a book. Another way to write this number is 2 136 279 841 – 1. There are a few special things about it. First, it’s a prime number (meaning it is only divisible by itself and one). Second, it’s what is called a Mersenne prime (we’ll get to what that means). And third, it is to date the largest prime number ever discovered in a mathematical quest with a history going back more than 2 000 years. The discovery that this number (known as M136279841 for short) is a prime was made on 12 October by Luke Durant, a 36-year-old researcher from San Jose, California. Durant is one of thousands of people working as part of a long-running volunteer prime-hunting effort called the Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search, or Gimps . A prime number that is one less than some power of two (or what mathematicians write as 2 p – 1) is called a Mersenne prime, after the French monk Marin Mersenne, who investigated them more than 350 years ago. The first few Mersenne primes are 3, 7, 31 and 127. Durant made his discovery through a combination of mathematical algorithms, practical engineering and massive computational power. Where large primes have previously been found using traditional computer processors (CPUs), this discovery is the first to use a different kind of processor called a GPU. GPUs were originally designed to speed up the rendering of graphics and video, and more recently have been repurposed to mine cryptocurrency and to power AI. Durant, a former employee of leading GPU maker Nvidia, used powerful GPUs in the cloud to create a kind of “cloud supercomputer” spanning 17 countries. The lucky GPU was an Nvidia A100 processor. Beyond the thrill of discovery, this advance continues a storyline that goes back millennia. One reason mathematicians are fascinated by Mersenne primes is that they are linked to so-called “perfect” numbers. A number is perfect if, when you add together all the numbers that properly divide it, they add up to the number itself. For example, six is a perfect number because 6 = 2 × 3 = 1 + 2 + 3. Likewise, 28 = 4 × 7 = 1 + 2 + 4 + 7 + 14. For every Mersenne prime, there is also an even perfect number. (In one of the oldest unfinished problems in mathematics, it is not known whether there are any odd perfect numbers.) Perfect numbers have fascinated humans throughout history. For example, the early Hebrews as well as Saint Augustine considered six to be a truly perfect number, as God fashioned the Earth in precisely six days (resting on the seventh). The study of prime numbers is not just a historical curiosity. Number theory is also essential to modern cryptography. For example, the security of many websites relies upon the inherent difficulty in finding the prime factors of large numbers. The numbers used in public-key cryptography (of the kind that secures most online activity, for example) are generally only a few hundred decimal digits, which is tiny compared to M136279841. Nevertheless, the benefits of basic research in number theory – studying the distribution of prime numbers, developing algorithms for testing whether numbers are prime, and finding factors of composite numbers – often have downstream implications in helping to maintain privacy and security in our digital communication. Mersenne primes are rare indeed: the new record is more than 16 million digits larger than the previous one, and is only the 52nd ever discovered. We know there are infinitely many prime numbers. This was proven by the Greek mathematician Euclid more than 2 000 years ago: if there were only a finite number of primes, we could multiply them all together and add one. The result would not be divisible by any of the primes we have already found, so there must always be at least one more out there. But we don’t know whether there are infinitely many Mersenne primes – though it has been conjectured that there are. Unfortunately, they are too scarce for our techniques to detect. Read: First quantum cyberattack expected by 2030s – IBM For now, the new prime serves as a milestone in human curiosity and a reminder that even in an age dominated by technology, some of the deeper, tantalising secrets in the mathematical universe remain out of reach. The challenge remains, inviting mathematicians and enthusiasts alike to find the hidden patterns in the infinite tapestry of numbers. And, so, the (mathematical) search for perfection will continue. Kevin Stefanski may be on the proverbial hot seat in the social media world, but it appears the Cleveland Browns' head coach is not in any danger of being dismissed after this season. The Browns have badly underachieved with a 3-8 record but have won two of their past four games, both against AFC North rivals in the Baltimore Ravens and Pittsburgh Steelers. And the win over the Steelers came in frigid, snowy conditions in which a bad team might fold. Cleveland even blew a 12-point fourth-quarter lead against Pittsburgh but remained engaged and recovered for a 24-19 victory. That's a team that is still playing extremely hard for its head coach. Stefanski certainly hasn't been as good a coach as last season, when he won 11 games and was named NFL Coach of the Year for the second time in four seasons. The Browns have lost four games by at least 16 points. Getting blown out that many times is never a good thing. But funny, the team seems more cohesive now that Deshaun Watson is out for the season with an Achilles' tendon injury . Watson has been a massive $230 million mistake , and his reputation is even worse, with more than two dozen massage therapists accusing him of sexual misconduct. No matter what players say outwardly, just know that many talk differently in private to each other about Watson and aren't impressed with his off-field behavior. So perhaps the real decision is whether or not to go another direction at quarterback and part ways with Watson. In that case, find your quarterback of the future and go with Jameis Winston as the bridge signal caller until the youngster is ready. I look at those two 11-win seasons the Browns enjoyed under Stefanski and think about how Cleveland didn't even have a single winning season from 2008-19. You may recall they experienced the embarrassing winless season in 2017 while going 1-31 in two seasons under Hue Jackson. At that pace, it would have taken Jackson 22 seasons to get 11 total wins. Or how about that playoff victory over the Steelers under Stefanski in 2020? That marks the lone postseason win in 25 seasons since this version of the franchise began play in 1999. Granted, things didn't go well last January as the Browns were clobbered 45-14 by the Houston Texans in the AFC wild-card round. Stefanski is 40-38 with the Browns, and his previous worst record for Cleveland is 7-10 in 2022. The Browns would have to really rally to reach seven wins this season, but perhaps splitting their final six games and finishing 6-11 is doable. The only real way to consider letting Stefanski go would be if the team totally collapses down the stretch and finishes 3-14 or 4-13. Of course, owner Jimmy Haslam isn't known for his patience, so perhaps this season is disappointing enough for him to make a move. In that case, he needs to take stock of some of the coaches the Browns have had over the past 16 seasons. Freddie Kitchens. The aforementioned Jackson. Mike Pettine. Rob Chudzinski. Pat Shurmur. Eric Mangini. None of those guys had a single winning season. Stefanski will never be the next Paul Brown, but he's certainly a better coach than anyone on that list. Those two 11-win seasons—for THIS franchise—should say it all. Bring back Stefanski and give it one more go. If he underachieves in 2025, then show him the door. But for next season, Stefanski is clearly the best man for the job on the shores of Lake Erie.LANDOVER, Md. (AP) — Austin Seibert choked back tears taking responsibility for missing the extra point that would have tied the score in the final minute. Jeremy Reaves choked back tears blaming himself for a missed assignment that led to a kickoff return touchdown. And John Bates choked back tears talking about moving forward from his costly fumble. All of those late mistakes contributed to the Washington Commanders' third consecutive loss , 34-26 to the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday in a game that was wholly unremarkable until fourth quarter chaos. The teams combined to score 31 points in the final four minutes, the most in an NFL game in more than a decade, and the Commanders (7-5) came out on the wrong end of it in a defeat that further endangers their playoff chances. “Any time you lose a game or you lose a game in that type of fashion, it’s very difficult and it’s tough, but it never comes down to one play,” rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels said. “There’s plays throughout the game where little things add up to big things.” There were a lot of little things. After Bates fumbled, the Cowboys (4-7) took an 11-point lead and the Commanders made a 2-point conversion to cut the deficit to three, Dallas' KaVonte Turpin returned the ensuing kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown. “I didn’t make the play when it was there to make, and it cost us,” said Reaves, one of the league’s top special teams players and the All-Pro pick for that two seasons ago. “No excuse, man. I’ve made that play 100 times, and I didn’t make it today and it cost us the game. It’s unacceptable. It’s solely on me. It’s going to sting for a while. It’s going to hurt.” After Seibert made a 51-yard field goal, Daniels connected with Terry McLaurin on an 86-yard TD that made it 27-26 with 21 seconds left. Coach Dan Quinn said no thought was given to going for 2 in that situation. Seibert, who missed the past two games with a right hip injury, was wide left on the point-after attempt. “I just wasn’t striking it well,” said Seibert, who added he felt fine and did not blame a low snap for his miss. "It didn’t make a difference at all. It was on me.” Juanyeh Thomas returned the onside kick immediately after 43 yards for a touchdown to put Dallas up eight with 14 seconds left. The 31 combined points are the second most in a game since at least 2000, behind only Minnesota and Baltimore's 36 in their game Dec. 8, 2013. Cowboys-Commanders was the first game in the Super Bowl era to have two missed extra points, two kickoff return touchdowns and a blocked punt. “We got down to the end there and it was a game-situational extravaganza,” Dallas coach Mike McCarthy said. “It was like Yahtzee. Everything was in there." While Washington's skid continued, the Cowboys ended their losing streak at five thanks to strong play from QB Cooper Rush, a defense that forced two turnovers and, of course, special teams success. Rush was 24 of 32 for 247 yards and TD passes to Jalen Tolbert and Luke Schoonmaker. “Lot of games left,” Rush said. “We’re sitting at 4-7. This is why you play them.” The Commanders have some soul-searching to do after losing as a 10 1/2-point favorite in the meeting of NFC East rivals and doing so in a way that left players so emotional. “The crazy games, I know they feel a little bit better whenever you win them,” punter and holder Tress Way said. “But that’s a tough pill to swallow.” Cowboys: LG Tyler Smith was inactive with ankle and knee injuries. ... RG Zack Martin (ankle), CB Trevon Diggs (groin/knee) and TE Jake Ferguson (concussion) were ruled out prior to game day and did not travel for the game. Commanders: RB Austin Ekeler was concussed on a kickoff return in the final seconds and taken to a hospital for further evaluation. ... RB Brian Robinson Jr. left with an ankle injury in the first half, returned and then left again. ... RT Andrew Wylie was concussed in the third quarter and did not return. ... C Tyler Biadasz was evaluated for a concussion in the fourth. ... CB Marshon Lattimore (hamstring) missed a third consecutive game since being acquired at the trade deadline from New Orleans. Cowboys: Host the New York Giants on Thursday in the traditional Thanksgiving Day game in Dallas. Commanders: Host the Tennessee Titans next Sunday in Washington’s final game before its late bye week. AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/nfl

NEW DELHI (AP) — India’s former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, widely regarded as the architect of India’s economic reform program and a landmark nuclear deal with the United States, has died. He was 92. Singh was admitted to New Delhi’s All India Institute of Medical Sciences late Thursday after his health deteriorated due to a “sudden loss of consciousness at home,” the hospital said in a statement. “Resuscitative measures were started immediately at home. He was brought to the Medical Emergency” at 8:06 p.m., the hospital said, but “despite all efforts, he could not be revived and was declared dead at 9:51 p.m.” Singh was being treated for “age-related medical conditions,” the statement said. A mild-mannered technocrat, Singh became one of India’s longest-serving prime ministers for 10 years and leader of the Congress Party in the Parliament's Upper House, earning a reputation as a man of great personal integrity. He was chosen to fill the role in 2004 by Sonia Gandhi, the widow of assassinated Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi . But his sterling image was tainted by allegations of corruption against his ministers. Singh was reelected in 2009, but his second term as prime minister was clouded by financial scandals and corruption charges over the organization of the 2010 Commonwealth Games. This led to the Congress Party’s crushing defeat in the 2014 national election by the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party under the leadership of Narendra Modi . Singh adopted a low profile after relinquishing the post of prime minister. Prime Minister Modi, who succeeded Singh in 2014, called him one of India’s “most distinguished leaders” who rose from humble origins and left “a strong imprint on our economic policy over the years.” “As our Prime Minister, he made extensive efforts to improve people’s lives,” Modi said in a post on the social platform X. He called Singh’s interventions in Parliament as a lawmaker “insightful” and said “his wisdom and humility were always visible.” Rahul Gandhi, from the same party as Singh and the opposition leader in the lower house of the Indian Parliament, said Singh’s “deep understanding of economics inspired the nation” and that he “led India with immense wisdom and integrity.” “I have lost a mentor and guide. Millions of us who admired him will remember him with the utmost pride,” Gandhi wrote on X. Born on Sept. 26, 1932, in a village in the Punjab province of undivided India, Singh’s brilliant academic career took him to Cambridge University in Britain, where he earned a degree in economics in 1957. He then got his doctorate in economics from Nuffield College at Oxford University in 1962. Singh taught at Panjab University and the prestigious Delhi School of Economics before joining the Indian government in 1971 as economic advisor in the Commerce Ministry. In 1982, he became chief economic adviser to the Finance Ministry. He also served as deputy chair of the Planning Commission and governor of the Reserve Bank of India. As finance minister, Singh in 1991 instituted reforms that opened up the economy and moved India away from a socialist-patterned economy and toward a capitalist model in the face of a huge balance of payments deficit, skirting a potential economic crisis. His accolades include the 1987 Padma Vibhushan Award, India’s second-highest civilian honor; the Jawaharlal Nehru Birth Centenary Award of the Indian Science Congress in 1995; and the Asia Money Award for Finance Minister of the Year in 1993 and 1994. Singh was a member of India’s Upper House of Parliament and was leader of the opposition from 1998 to 2004 before he was named prime minister. He was the first Sikh to hold the country’s top post and made a public apology in Parliament for the 1984 Sikh Massacre in which some 3,000 Sikhs were killed after then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was assassinated by Sikh bodyguards. Under Singh, India adopted a Right to Information Act in 2005 to promote accountability and transparency from government officials and bureaucrats. He was also instrumental in implementing a welfare scheme that guaranteed at least 100 paid workdays for Indian rural citizens. The coalition government he headed for a decade brought together politicians and parties with differing ideologies that were rivals in the country’s various states. In a move hailed as one of his biggest achievements apart from economic reforms, Singh ended India’s nuclear isolation by signing a deal with the U.S. that gave India access to American nuclear technology. But the deal hit his government adversely, with Communist allies withdrawing support and criticism of the agreement growing within India in 2008 when it was finalized. Singh adopted a pragmatic foreign policy approach, pursuing a peace process with nuclear rival and neighbor Pakistan. But his efforts suffered a major setback after Pakistani militants carried out a massive gun and bomb attack in Mumbai in November 2008. He also tried to end the border dispute with China, brokering a deal to reopen the Nathu La pass into Tibet, which had been closed for more than 40 years. His 1965 book, “India’s Export Trends and Prospects for Self-Sustained Growth,” dealt with India’s inward-oriented trade policy. Singh is survived by his wife Gursharan Kaur and three daughters. Associated Press writer Sheikh Saaliq in New Delhi contributed to this report. This week’s SmackDown greatly changed Bloodline’s story, as we saw CM Punk in the middle of the Ring. Solo Sikoa also came out and declared war, which got Roman Reigns and the first Bloodline members into action. In the previous SmackDown, the fifth member of both Bloodlines was needed, so they introduced a new member to Solo Sikoa’s Bloodline, Bronson Reed. Bronson has some serious issues with Set Rollins, so the WWE fans thought that he would join the other Bloodline. However, that is not what happened. Even though Rollins has a history with Roman Reigns, the original Bloodline was outnumbered when they faced Sikoa. Earlier in SmackDown, Roman Reigns also talked about other potential wrestlers who were expected to join the team, but he confirmed that he would not allow them. Fifth Member of OG Bloodline Solo Sikoa was standing in the ring, repeatedly asking Roman Reigns for his submission and for him to accept his real Trial Chief. But here, the entry of the famous and most loved character Paul Heyman was made, and he brought a big surprise with himself, which was about the fifth member of the Roman Reigns Bloodline. Interestingly, the upcoming Premier event War Games will not feature Seth Rollins or Cody Rhodes so that they can fight equally. According to Paul Heyman, CM Punk is the suitable superstar to join Roman Reigns on his way to the Civil War in the Premier event. Solo Sikoa was already in the ring when Roman Reigns entered the arena. He tried to hurt the OG Bloodline by showing them their weaknesses, such as not having the fifth man. In short, Siko asked him to surrender. Sikoa is so sure about his victory that he thinks that if Reigns does not merge with him, then Reign’s team will fall apart. Clash With CM Punk After that, it was the time for Reigns to speak as he was a chance but Reigns did not reply to Sikoa’s nonsense and proceeded to stand there coldly. However, before Reigns could have made a move, the wise man’s voice was heard from behind. Paul Heyman made his entry again, introducing himself in his epic way. CM Punk also joined them and immediately locked eyes with Bronson Reed and started beating each other brutally. The rest of the Bloodline was doing the same, and Reigns was landing punches straight to the head of Solo Sikoa. After the match was over they had somehow dominated the Sikoa group, Reigns looked into the eyes of CM Punk and asked him the reason for him being here in the Civil War. CM Punk made it clear that he was not there by himself but it was Paul Heyman who brought him there. And we were able to see Heyman and there was a look of pride on his face. He was very glad that he managed to bring these two legends in the same ring. Final Thoughts The Civil War includes the Uso Brothers, Roman Reigns, Sami Zayn , and now CM Punk against Bronson Reed, Tonga Brothers, and Solo Sikoa but we might see some interferences from other boys. Because Seth Rollins got his revenge on Reed but they are still in heavy rivalry we might see his interference too. This is going to be one of the most actively engaging battles ever in WWE. On the other side, Punk’s participation is even better for the PPV than the signing of Seth Rollins or Cody Rhodes because it fits since CM Punk has a history with both Bloodlines and he has recently come out of a serious rivalry against Drew McIntyre, so makes him the right guy to join. What are your thoughts about CM Punk joining the Bloodline? NEW YORK (AP) — An Alabama woman who says she was raped by Jay-Z and Sean “Diddy” Combs when she was 13 can proceed anonymously, for now, in her lawsuit against the rap moguls, a judge ruled Thursday. In her written order, Judge Analisa Torres also chastised the lawyer representing Jay-Z for what she described as his combative motions and “inflammatory language” against the plaintiff’s lawyer, calling them inappropriate. The Manhattan jurist said the woman can proceed anonymously at this early stage of the litigation, but she may be required to reveal her identity at a later date, if the case proceeds. That would allow defense lawyers to collect facts necessary to prepare for trial. Torres also cited “substantial interest” from the public. Combs remains jailed in New York awaiting a criminal trial on federal sex trafficking charges. He also faces a wave of sexual assault lawsuits, many of which were filed by the plaintiff’s lawyer, Tony Buzbee, a Texas attorney who says his firm represents over 150 people, both men and women, who allege sexual abuse and exploitation by Combs. The lawsuits allege many individuals were abused at parties in New York, California and Florida after receiving drug-laced drinks. Combs’ lawyers have dismissed Buzbee’s lawsuits as “shameless publicity stunts, designed to extract payments from celebrities who fear having lies spread about them, just as lies have been spread about Mr. Combs.” Jay-Z has said in a statement that Buzbee is trying to blackmail him to settle the Alabama woman’s allegations. Buzbee said in an email that his firm does not comment on court rulings. In her lawsuit, the woman who says she was raped at 13 identifies herself as “Jane Doe.” She said she was living in Rochester in 2000 when she made her way to New York City and befriended a limousine driver who drove her to an after-party for the MTV Music Awards, where she says she was eventually attacked by Jay-Z and Combs. Alex Spiro, a lawyer for Jay-Z, asked the judge to dismiss the entertainer from the woman’s lawsuit and he requested a hearing on the case for the day after he made his requests in writing on Dec. 18. Citing an interview the plaintiff did on NBC-TV, Spiro wrote that the broadcast revealed “glaring inconsistencies and outright impossibilities” in the plaintiff’s story. For one thing, the woman said she traveled for five hours from Rochester to watch the music awards show on a jumbotron outside the VMA even though permits and pictures show there was no jumbotron at the event. Winnipeg Jets Game Days On Winnipeg Jets game days, hockey writers Mike McIntyre and Ken Wiebe send news, notes and quotes from the morning skate, as well as injury updates and lineup decisions. Arrives a few hours prior to puck drop. Spiro also noted that the woman’s father has said he does not recall driving from Rochester to pick his daughter up in New York City, as she says he did. The woman has admitted inconsistencies in her story. Torres wrote in her order Thursday that Spiro, who has been on the case less than three weeks, has submitted a “litany of letters and motions attempting to impugn the character of Plaintiff’s lawyer, many of them expounding on the purported ‘urgency’ of this case.” Referring to Jay-Z by his legal last name, the judge added: “Carter’s lawyer’s relentless filing of combative motions containing inflammatory language and ad hominem attacks is inappropriate, a waste of judicial resources, and a tactic unlikely to benefit his client. The Court will not fast-track the judicial process merely because counsel demands it.” A message seeking comment from Spiro was left for him on Thursday. Advertisement AdvertisementElevai Labs Inc. US lawmakers concluded a two-year investigation Monday into the Covid-19 outbreak that killed 1.1 million Americans -- backing the theory that the virus likely leaked from a Chinese laboratory. A 520-page report from the Republican-controlled House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic looked at the federal and state-level response, as well as the pandemic's origins and vaccination efforts. "This work will help the United States, and the world, predict the next pandemic, prepare for the next pandemic, protect ourselves from the next pandemic, and hopefully prevent the next pandemic," panel chairman Brad Wenstrup said in a letter to Congress. US federal agencies, the World Health Organization and scientists across the planet have arrived at different conclusions about the most likely origin of Covid-19, and no consensus has emerged. Most believe it to have spread from animals in China, but a US intelligence analysis said last year that the virus may have been genetically engineered and escaped from a virology lab in the Chinese city of Wuhan, where human cases first emerged. The congressional panel was persuaded by the lab leak theory after meeting 25 times, conducting more than 30 transcribed interviews and reviewing more than one million pages of documents. The investigation included two days of interviews behind closed doors with Anthony Fauci, the government scientist who became the nation's most trusted expert in the chaotic early days of the 2020 outbreak. Fauci's clashes with former and incoming president Donald Trump over the response sparked fury on the right, and he now lives with security protection following death threats against his family. Republicans accuse the 83-year-old immunologist of helping to set off the worst pandemic in a century by approving funding passed on to Chinese scientists they accuse of manufacturing the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus that causes Covid-19. Among its headline conclusions, the report said the National Institutes of Health had indeed funded contentious "gain-of-function" research -- which seeks to enhance viruses as a way of finding ways to combat them -- at the Wuhan Institute of Virology. Fauci angrily denied covering up the origins of Covid-19 before the panel in June, arguing that it would be "molecularly impossible" for the bat viruses studied at the lab to be turned into the virus that caused the pandemic. But the panel's report said SARS-CoV-2 "likely emerged because of a laboratory or research related accident." The probe found that lockdowns "did more harm than good" and that mask mandates were "ineffective at controlling the spread of Covid-19," contradicting other research showing that masking in public does reduce transmission rates. Social distancing guidelines also came under criticism, although travel restrictions were deemed to have saved lives. Investigators found that Trump's Operation Warp Speed -- the publicly-funded project to develop Covid vaccines -- was a "tremendous success" but that school closures would have an "enduring impact" on US children. ft/jgcA Nebraska defensive leader from this season who had previously announced his return in 2025 has changed course and will transfer. Defensive end Jimari Butler said last week he intended to remain with the Huskers for a sixth and final year but pivoted Monday and will enter the portal. The 6-foot-5, 260-pounder from Alabama started 10 games this fall with 22 tackles and a fumble recovery. His seven stops for loss are third most on the team and his 371 defensive snaps were 10th most among the Blackshirts. Butler last week laid out why he would stay with NU once more, describing plans to get a master’s degree in criminal justice after talking with his mother and evaluating his NFL draft stock. He reflected on his previous dalliance with the portal – he entered when Nebraska made a coaching change at the end of the 2022 season but ultimately stayed. “It was kind of a panic move because I didn’t know what to expect,” Butler said. “But I’ve seen my growth as a player and I just wanted to give it another year.” The pivot came in the wake of defensive coordinator leaving to take the same position at Florida State. Butler is the fourth Husker to turn to the portal Monday and second defensive lineman after rotational player Vincent Jackson. Butler’s departure means all three of NU’s starting D-linemen are moving on after seniors Ty Robinson and Nash Hutmacher exhaust their eligibility following the upcoming bowl game. Junior lineman Elijah Jeudy indicated Sunday he would return for his senior year. Asked why so many players stayed with Nebraska last offseason, Butler called the culture “a different vibe.” “It’s more family-oriented,” Butler said. “But you eat what you kill in the program so if you produce you’re going to play.” Butler has appeared in 37 career games with 65 tackles and 17 TFLs in three-plus seasons as a steady contributor.
