UPPER DARBY, Pa. (WPVI) -- Thousands of drivers in Delaware County have been issued citations for passing school buses this school year after several districts have implemented new technology to catch violators. Video from a traffic camera on an Upper Darby school bus earlier this year shows the bus approaching Ruskin Lane on South 69th Street. The bus puts out its stop sign and a dark SUV speeds through. Seconds later, students cross in front of the bus. As police have learned, this is something that happens nearly 60 times a day in Upper Darby. "I was floored," said Upper Darby Police Superintendent Timothy Bernhardt. "We get inundated, both the school district and the police department, with complaints about traffic, and one of the main complaints is people passing school buses." That's why this year, the district started working with BusPatrol, a company that installs cameras on school buses that collect information on violators. "We can see the arm extend. We see the stop, flashing stop sign go up, and we see the car go by, and we see the offense in the beginning, middle, and end," he said. The technology captures images from the front, side, and rear and sends the information on violators to police departments who issue the citations. "When we went through and we were first implementing the technology, it was, 'Yeah you'll probably see a few hundred in the first few months,'" said Bernhardt There have been 5,300 citations in Upper Darby issued this school year. "It's also sad when you think about it that that many people are passing school buses on a regular basis," said Bernhardt Upper Darby isn't the only district that's implemented the technology. Marple-Newtown began this year as well, gathering 200-300 citations a month. Lower Merion School District is also considering using BusPatrol. "This isn't us trying to punish people, we're trying to teach people that safety has to be out there," said Bernhardt. Drivers we spoke with say they always stop for school buses but aren't surprised others don't. "I got cars passing me on the left, on the right, because I'm going to slow in the school zone," said Terrance Stirling. "I don't do it. I reject that, I think it's ridiculous," said Pat Jaffe. The United States Postal Service might have found a way to unite a nation bitterly divided after this month's election: It will release a Betty White stamp. Commanders running back Austin Ekeler has had two concussions this year. He’s still feeling the effects of the most recent one he suffered. Via Ben Standig of TheAthletic.com, Ekeler said during his weekly appearance on 106.7 The Fan that he’s experiencing concussion symptoms after suffering a brain injury during the Week 12 game against Dallas. He has since been placed on injured reserve. Ekeler said he has memory loss from the hit; he recalls nothing until he got into an ambulance that took him to a hospital. Ekeler said he had similar memory issues after his Week 3 concussion against the Bengals. Ekeler also said he’s experiencing lingering neck pain as a result of the latest injury. He has at least two prior concussions during his professional career. Ekeler, 29, entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Chargers in 2017. He signed a two-year, $8.4 million contract with the Commanders earlier this year. In 11 games this season, he has 355 rushing yards, 346 receiving yards, and four touchdowns. Hegseth, a former Fox News Host, Army National Guard major and combat veteran, spent much of the week on Capitol Hill trying to salvage his Cabinet nomination and privately reassure Republican senators that he is fit to lead Trump’s Pentagon. “Pete Hegseth is doing very well,” Trump posted on his social media site. “He will be a fantastic, high energy, Secretary of Defense." The president added that "Pete is a WINNER, and there is nothing that can be done to change that!!!” The pitched nomination battle over Hegseth is emerging as not only as a debate about the best person to lead the Pentagon, but an inflection point for a MAGA movement that appears to be relishing a public fight over its hardline push for a more masculine military and an end to the “woke-ism" of diversity, equity and inclusion efforts. Trump’s allies are forcefully rallying around the embattled Hegseth – the Heritage Foundation’s political arm is promising to spend $1 million to shore up his nomination – as he vows to stay in the fight, as long as the president-elect wants him to. “We’re going to earn those votes,” Hegseth said on Capitol Hill this week. “As long as Donald Trump wants me in this fight, I’m going to be standing right here.” The effort quickly become a test of Trump’s clout and of how far loyalty for the president-elect goes with Republican senators who have concerns about his nominees. Still, Trump's transition team has been looking at potential replacements if Hegseth's nomination cannot move forward, including former presidential rival Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis . This underscores that, despite the much-celebrated “ stabilisation ” following the IMF’s programme, the current recovery is neither sustainable nor sufficient. Economic vulnerabilities remain high unless there is a comprehensive overhaul of the government’s mechanics at both the strategic (policy) and operational levels. Historically, Pakistan’s investment-to-GDP ratio has seen a troubling decline. The 1960s recorded the highest average at 18.7%, followed by the 1980s and 1990s at 18.5%. However, since 2011, the ratio has averaged just 15.2%, reflecting a concerning trend for economic durability as our GDP panorama has remained primarily consumption-driven. Additionally, a regional comparison reveals an even grimmer scenario. While South Asia averages 31.8%, countries like India, Bangladesh, and Vietnam report significantly higher ratios of 33.74%, 30.95%, and 32.75%, respectively. This disparity embodies the shortsightedness of Pakistan’s policy-makers in fostering global competitiveness vis-à-vis our neighbours. Investment is a bedrock for economic growth, fomenting the creation of capital assets like infrastructure, factories, and technology. A low investment ratio signals insufficient capital formation, which hinders long-term productivity and concurrent growth. Low investment also limits modernisation in industries and the adoption of advanced technologies, increasing dependence on imports and exposing the economy to global economic shocks, perennial current account deficits, and volatile exchange rates. Lack of fiscal discipline is another visceral problem in the economic milieu, causing trouble and leading to an informal economy, which in turn deteriorates investment in the economy It also reflects limited private sector participation, driven by an unfavourable business environment, regulatory barriers, high borrowing costs, and weak investor confidence. This is evident from banks' preference to invest in government securities rather than lending to consumers. Without immediate and synchronised efforts from all stakeholders, Pakistan risks falling further behind in global competitiveness, with dire consequences for future generations. The United States Postal Service might have found a way to unite a nation bitterly divided after this month's election: It will release a Betty White stamp. The beloved actor known for roles in "The Golden Girls," "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," "Boston Legal" and others will be on a 2025 Forever stamp, USPS announced this past week. White died in late December 2021 , less than three weeks before her 100th birthday. The Postal Service hasn't announced a release date for the stamp.
