Hyderabad : There has been a significant increase in traffic violations while a dip in the number of deaths due to road accidents, according to the Hyderabad police annual report that was released at the Integrated Command Control Centre (ICCC) on Sunday, December 22. According to the report, 2024 saw an overall increase in the total number of accidents and traffic violations registered in the Hyderabad city police limits. The number of fatalities from road accidents has come down from 335 in 2023 to 227 in 2024 and pedestrian fatalities have dipped from 137 to 89. The number of reported accidents has risen to 2745 in 2024, a slight 7.73 per cent jump from 2548 cases in 2023. In 2024, as many as 3,065 persons were injured from road accidents, while 775 pedestrians were injured out of 819 pedestrian accidents, representing a significant 94.63 per cent injury rate. This year, Hyderabad city traffic police raised a total of 48,81,352 traffic violation tickets compared to 48,53,018 violation tickets in 2023. There has been a massive 140 per cent hike in drunken driving cases reported in 2024 with 8,40,084 cases. In 2023, the total number of cases reported was 3,49,917. Despite a significant increase in the number of people checked for drunken driving this year, the conviction rate remains relatively low. While 8,40,084 individuals were checked, only 52,080 convictions were made, marking an increase of just 8,140 compared to the previous year. The number of cases reported for over speeding in 2024 is 88,348 which is 35,431 cases less when compared to 2023 which recorded 52,917 cases. Wrong-side driving increased by 25 per cent in 2024 with 405756 reported this year as compared to 546115 cases in the previous year. Helmetless riding remains a significant issue, with more than 22 lakh cases reported in 2024. He said that the traffic police will reorient itself, as it is a department which constantly touches the common people during their everyday lives. The ceasefire would mark the first major step toward ending the regionwide unrest triggered by Hamas’ attack on Israel on Oct. 7, 2023. But it does not address the devastating war in Gaza, where Hamas is still holding dozens of hostages and the conflict is more intractable. Hours before the ceasefire with Hezbollah was to take effect, Israel carried out the most intense wave of strikes in Beirut and its southern suburbs since the start of the conflict and issued a record number of evacuation warnings. At least 24 people were killed in strikes across the country, according to local authorities, as Israel signaled it aims to pummel Hezbollah before the ceasefire takes hold at 4 a.m. local time on Wednesday. Another huge airstrike shook Beirut shortly after the ceasefire was announced. There appeared to be some lingering disagreement over whether Israel would have the right to strike Hezbollah if it believed the militants had violated the agreement, something Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu insisted was part of the deal but which Lebanese and Hezbollah officials have rejected. Israel's security Cabinet approved the ceasefire agreement after it was presented by Netanyahu, his office said. The warnings, coupled with fear that Israel was ratcheting up attacks before a ceasefire, sent residents fleeing. Traffic was gridlocked, and some cars had mattresses tied to them. Dozens of people, some wearing their pajamas, gathered in a central square, huddling under blankets or standing around fires as Israeli drones buzzed loudly overhead. Israeli military spokesman Avichay Adraee issued evacuation warnings for 20 buildings in Beirut's southern suburbs, where Hezbollah has a major presence, as well as a warning for the southern town of Naqoura where the U.N. peacekeeping mission, UNIFIL, is headquartered. UNIFIL spokesperson Andrea Tenenti told The Associated Press that peacekeepers will not evacuate. The Israeli military also said its ground troops clashed with Hezbollah forces and destroyed rocket launchers in the Slouqi area on the eastern end of the Litani River, a few kilometers (miles) from the Israeli border. Under the ceasefire deal, Hezbollah would be required to move its forces north of the Litani, which in some places is about 30 kilometers (20 miles) north of the border. Hezbollah began firing into northern Israel on Oct. 8, 2023, saying it was showing support for the Palestinians, a day after Hamas carried out its attack on southern Israel, triggering the Gaza war. Israel returned fire on Hezbollah, and the two sides have been exchanging barrages ever since. Israel escalated its campaign of bombardment in mid-September and later sent troops into Lebanon, vowing to put an end to Hezbollah fire so tens of thousands of evacuated Israelis could return to their homes. More than 3,760 people have been killed by Israeli fire in Lebanon the past 13 months, many of them civilians, according to Lebanese health officials. The bombardment has driven 1.2 million people from their homes. Israel says it has killed more than 2,000 Hezbollah members. Hezbollah fire has forced some 50,000 Israelis to evacuate in the country’s north, and its rockets have reached as far south in Israel as Tel Aviv. Kuwait City: Agreeing to elevate the relations to a 'Strategic Partnership', India and Kuwait on Sunday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to institutionalize bilateral cooperation in the area of defence during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's historic two-day visit to the key Gulf nation. Recognising that defence is an important component of the strategic partnership, both countries maintain that the MoU will provide the required framework to further strengthen bilateral defence ties, including through joint military exercises, training of defence personnel, coastal defence, maritime safety, joint development and production of defence equipment. The two sides also "unequivocally condemned" terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, including cross-border terrorism and called for disrupting of terrorism financing networks and safe havens, and dismantling of terror infrastructure. "Expressing appreciation of their ongoing bilateral cooperation in the area of security, both sides agreed to enhance cooperation in counter-terrorism operations, information and intelligence sharing, developing and exchanging experiences, best practices and technologies, capacity building and to strengthen cooperation in law enforcement, anti-money laundering, drug-trafficking and other transnational crimes," read the Joint Statement issued after the conclusion of PM Modi's visit. Discussions were also held to promote cooperation in cybersecurity, including prevention of use of cyberspace for terrorism, radicalisation and for disturbing social harmony. "The two sides expressed interest in pursuing deeper collaboration in the area of technology including emerging technologies, semiconductors and artificial intelligence. They discussed avenues to explore B2B cooperation, furthering e-Governance, and sharing best practices for facilitating industries/companies of both countries in the policies and regulation in the electronics and IT sector," the Joint Statement mentioned. New Joint Working Groups (JWGs) have been set up in areas of trade, investments, education and skill development, science and technology, security and counter-terrorism, agriculture, and culture, in addition to the existing JWGs on health, manpower and hydrocarbons. Both sides emphasised on convening the meetings of the newly-formed Joint Commission on Cooperation (JCC) and the JWGs under it at an early date to further expand bilateral cooperation across various fields. IANSIt appears that the American whiskey industry was right to be nervous about Donald Trump ‘s tariff threats. The president elect announced on Monday that he would institute a new round of 25 percent tariffs on Canada and Mexico on day one of his presidency, a move that is sure to drive up the cost of tequila and Canadian whisky here and could possibly spark a new trade war in the spirits industry. Trump’s declaration came via Truth Social, where he said the tariffs were a response to his claims of illegal immigration and drugs coming over the border into the country. “Both Mexico and Canada have the absolute right and power to easily solve this long simmering problem,” he wrote. “We hereby demand that they use this power, and until such time that they do, it is time for them to pay a very big price!” He also said he would impose a 10 percent tariff on all goods coming from China. This is exactly the kind of move that the American whiskey industry feared would happen, as we reported shortly before the election. Tequila is an incredibly popular category here in the U.S., and has even surpassed sales of American whiskey. Canadian whisky is also very popular, with brands like Crown Royal doing big numbers across the country. These tariffs will very likely lead to retaliatory tariffs on American whiskey, although that remains to be seen, and they do nothing to quell fears about the return of tariffs that could be imposed by the E.U. on bourbon and rye at staggering 50 percent next March. The Distilled Spirits Council of the United States was quick to respond, noting that the U.S. imported $4.6 billion worth of tequila last year and Mexico was the third largest export market for American spirits, while we imported $537 million worth of Canadian spirits and Canada was the second largest export market. After setting the stage with some appreciative language about Trump wanting to protect American people and jobs, DISCUS CEO Chris Swonger’s statement reiterated what’s at stake. “Our industry has been weighed down by retaliatory tariffs as part of unrelated trade disputes since 2018, which crashed our exports harming thousands of distillers and their farmers across the United States,” he said. “Imposing a tariff on tequila and Canadian whisky from two of our largest trading partners could kick off more retaliatory tariffs on American spirits to Canada and Mexico. Under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), tequila and Canadian whisky are designated as distinctive products, similar to bourbon, where they can only be made in their country of origin. Slapping a tariff on tequila and Canadian whisky will not boost American jobs simply because they cannot be produced in the United States.” Of course, it’s not just about spirits, because there are goods and issues at stake that are arguably much more important like car parts and crude oil. But the reality is that these tariffs will likely have a real negative impact upon the lives of the thousands of people who work in the spirits industry, as well as consumers looking to purchase a bottle, on both sides of both borders.
