Most offered cautious optimism for how the unprecedented government stimulus unleashed late in the summer would help grease the wheels and pleaded for patience. But the group that once defied Silicon Valley and defined the country’s private economy was short on new ideas and ambitious goals. Just over the past week, the five biggest tech firms erased US$41bil in market value, while a gauge of sector stocks listed in Hong Kong fell into bear market territory. Last Friday, a sell-off in Chinese stocks deepened as concerns over Donald Trump’s imminent return mingled with growing frustrations over the pace of Beijing’s financial stimulus rollout. My trusty spreadsheet reviewed quarterly wage stats from the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics for the second quarter, focusing on details for 29 California counties and seven from Southern California. The 9.9 million local workers collectively saw annualized earnings rise 3.6% in 12 months to an average $75,600 annual wage. By the way, Southern California’s workforce is roughly the size of all the employees in New York state or the Netherlands. Let’s start with paying the Inland Empire and its big logistics industries. Across San Bernardino County, annual wages rose 5.3% in a year to $62,504 for 837,800 workers. That’s the region’s biggest raise – but its only eighth-best out of the among 29 California counties tracked by the report. Meanwhile, neighboring Riverside County had 4.3% increases (No. 14 statewide) to $59,384 for 836,100 workers. And in Santa Barbara County, an economy heavy with hospitality jobs, wages were up 4.7% (No. 9 statewide) to $67,496 for 222,400 workers. Now, let’s contrast those raises better-paid parts of Southern California. These counties have higher concentrations of workers at technology and business-services companies. Orange County’s one-year raises averaged 4.2% (No. 15 statewide) to $78,312 for 1.65 million workers. Los Angeles County pay was up 4.1% increase (No. 16) to $79,768 for 4.5 million workers. If one sits down to pen India’s economic history after Independence, it could be broadly classified into two eras — Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru’s socialist era from 1950 to 1991 and Dr Manmohan Singh’s liberal economic regime from 1991 onwards. The economic policies before 1991 were largely influenced by India’s suspicion of foreign traders, in view of its experience with the British who sailed to Indian shores for trade and entrenched themselves as rulers. The distaste for foreign investment continued even though the Indian economy performed at suboptimal level growing at an yearly average of 3.9 per cent from 1950 to 1990. While India managed to lay the foundation for large basic industries, the lack of competition and a captive market robbed the Indian manufacturers of incentive to produce world-class products. In 1991, following India’s worst financial crisis, Dr Manmohan Singh dismantled the old Fabian socialist thought in India by opening up the Indian economy. Instead of fear for foreign capital, Dr Singh’s Budget speech exuded his confidence in the Indian economy. He argued for allowing direct foreign investment into India for capital, technology, and markets. His words about the arrival of India on the global stage proved to be truly prophetic. Since 1991, India’s economic growth has picked up and helped more than 500 million people to come out of extreme levels of poverty. Manmohan Singh’s reforms, which were continued by his successors, created globally competitive companies in India. His policies laid the path for the robust expansion of the middle class. It also created prosperity in the country, which funded the government’s ambitious welfare programmes like the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, subsidised food grains to the poor, midday meals at schools and social security schemes for elderly. In one of his last interviews in 2023, Dr Singh sounded confident about the Indian economy’s ability to navigate through the recent geopolitical and geoeconomic maelstroms, provided the country remains a harmonious society. India must not forget this prescription of Dr Singh ever.
