Colorado’s unionized legislative aides called for the resignation or removal of state Sen. Sonya Jaquez Lewis on Saturday in response to that she mistreated employees in her office. “Jaquez Lewis has consistently shown that she does not have the ability to manage an office, sit in a leadership role as chair, and show basic respect and decency to staff and her colleagues,” the Political Workers Guild of Colorado wrote in to Colorado State Senate leaders. Senate leadership stripped Jaquez Lewis of her state-paid aides earlier this week after two staffers formally complained that they were instructed to do chores around her home and bartend at a party she hosted, She was previously accused of which led to her removal as a committee chair and a sponsor of a wage theft bill earlier this year. Jaquez Lewis said Saturday that she took the union’s letter “very seriously” and would support members’ concerns being investigated in a setting that would allow her to present evidence in her defense. “I’m deeply sorry for my part of any miscommunication or any action on my part that has hurt anyone,” she said. “I am taking steps to proactively set up a nonpartisan HR management person that my staff can work with and go to for any issues. The path forward from here is to investigate what happened. I feel confident that this process will present my side of the story and all sides of the story.” Since at least 2023, other Democratic lawmakers, including Senate President Steve Fenberg, have admonished Jaquez Lewis for her alleged mistreatment of employees. Fenberg wrote in a September 2023 email to Jaquez Lewis that several staff members and legislators had “witnessed behavior they found concerning” and that this behavior was “something I hope you will prioritize improving upon.” He also said Senate staffers would not help her vet aides or place aides in her office in 2024. The Political Workers Guild of Colorado in its letter said these previous incidents and the latest allegations were proof of a “drastic” lack of accountability by Jaquez Lewis. The union also called for the creation of a formal system that would allow aides to express their grievances with legislators. “For too many years we have been reporting incidents that have been met with few repercussions for the legislator because of the lack of accountability mechanisms in the current system,” the letter reads. “If we believe in the fundamental right of the worker, we need this framework.” Jaquez Lewis was first elected to the Colorado House of Representatives in 2018. She secured a Senate seat in 2020 and was re-elected for another four-year term this year.

The Falcons took command in the second half and defeated Hills-Beaver Creek 20-8 in the Minnesota 9-man Prep Bowl championship game on Saturday at U.S. Bank Stadium. ADVERTISEMENT Jonah Harstad and Isaiah Wright ran for third quarter touchdowns and, after Hills-Beaver Creek trimmed the lead to 14-8 late in the third, Harstad ran for the game's final score with about 10 minutes to play. The Falcons made eight previous state tournament trips, with a runner-up finish in 2021. They finished the season 13-0 and gave 30-year head coach Brian Nelson the biggest of his 207 career victories. Neither team could muster much offensively in a scoreless first half. Of the Falcons' five possessions, three ended on failed fourth down tries, another on a fumble and they punted on their first drive. Hills-Beaver Creek lost the ball on downs to open the game, punted and then had two drives end on F-B interceptions. But F-B got rolling after stopping the Patriots on downs on the first possession of the second half. The Falcons drove 47 yards in eight plays, with Harstad scoring from 2-yards out for a 6-0 lead with 5:05 left in the third quarter. F-B's Preston Hanson recovered a Patriots fumble on the ensuing drive and the Falcons drove 42 yards in six plays, with Wright scoring on a 3-yard run and adding the 2-point run for a 14-0 lead with 2:31 left in the third. H-BC got back in it when quarterback Jamin Metzger connected with James VandenBosch on a 53-yard TD pass with 2:09 left in the third quarter to make it 14-8 Falcons. ADVERTISEMENT But the Falcons answered on their next possession, with Harstad running it in from 1-yard out to cap an eight-play, 50-yard drive to make it 20-6 with 10 minutes to play. F-B turned H-BC over on downs on its next possession but the Patriots got another shot when Harstad lost a fumble at the Patriots' 16 yard line with 3:23 left in the game. However, Wright intercepted a Metzger pass four plays later and returned it 17 yards to the H-BC 33 yard line with 2:31 to play. On second down, Wright ran 10 yards for a first down to the Patriots 20 yard line with two minutes left and the Falcons burned the remaining time to end the game. Wright carried 33 times for 185 yards and a TD and Harstad ran for 28 yards and two scores on 14 carries. Quarterback Easton Petry hit 7 of 10 passes for 91 yards. Bryer Strem made four catches for 41 yards, and he also intercepted two passes in the first half. Caleb Sather led the Falcons with nine total tackles, Hanson made eight solo stops, and Jack Leiser had six tackles. All three had tackles for lost yards. H-BC's Metzger hit 11 of 18 passes for 114 yards but was intercepted three times. He led Patriots rushers with 30 yards on seven carries. VandenBosch had four receptions for 81 yards and a touchdown.

Patrick Mahomes looked stoic after fill-in kicker Spencer Shrader’s field goal beat Carolina 30-27. Travis Kelce, Chris Jones and the rest of the Chiefs merely joined him in walking from the sideline to midfield for handshakes, then headed back to the locker room, a scene completely different from the jubilation they exhibited at the end of so many other nail-biters. Might be that they’re getting sick of the stress at the end of games; Kansas City has won 12 straight games decided by seven points or fewer, the longest streak in NFL history, and has won five games decided on the final play this season. Then again, it might be that the Chiefs felt as if they should have beaten the Panthers by a much wider margin. They committed 10 penalties for 91 yards. Their secondary struggled against Carolina quarterback Bryce Young, a one-time bust who has started to play better of late. And their offensive tackles were routinely beaten with Mahomes sacked five times. “You always want to have some blowouts. You want to be a little calmer in the fourth quarter,” said Mahomes, who had one of his best games despite the protection problems, throwing for 269 yards and three touchdowns without an interception. “It can be a good thing as you get to the playoffs and later in the season,” Mahomes added, “just knowing you’ve been in those moments before, and knowing how to kind of attack it play by play — not making it too big of a moment. I will say this more than anybody, I would love to win a game not by the very last play.” The Chiefs (10-1) nevertheless remained a game ahead of Buffalo in the race for the No. 1 seed in the AFC heading into Friday’s game against the Raiders. But there is no margin for error with the Bills now holding the tiebreaker over them. “It’s all about getting better. That’s the best thing about playing in the NFL,” Mahomes said. “We’ve got to just go back, learn from (Carolina), and know we have a short week against a hungry football team in the Raiders that’s coming to our house.” What’s working The Chiefs’ tight ends have taken advantage of deep shell coverages played by opposing defenses by getting open underneath, especially Noah Gray, who had his second straight two-touchdown day against the Panthers. He finished with four catches for a team-best 66 yards, while Kelce was right behind with six catches for 62 yards. What needs help The Chiefs have had problems at tackle all season. Wanya Morris struggled again on the left side and veteran Jawaan Taylor was not much better on the right, and they’re a big reason why Mahomes has been sacked 15 times over the past four games. Stock up Just a few weeks ago, Shrader was on the Jets practice squad, hoping for a chance to kick in another regular-season game. Now, with Harrison Butker on injured reserve, he is making the most of that chance in Kansas City. The undrafted rookie is 3 for 3 on field goals, including that 31-yard game-winner against Carolina, and perfect on six extra-point attempts. Stock down Just about everyone in the Kansas City secondary struggled against Carolina, whether it was cornerbacks Nazeeh Johnson and Chamarri Conner or safeties Bryan Cook and Justin Reid. Young shredded them for 263 yards passing and a touchdown. Injuries The Chiefs could have running back Isiah Pacheco and pass rusher Charles Omenihu back this week. Both have been practicing the past couple of weeks and were close to playing against Carolina. Pacheco is returning from an ankle injury sustained in Week 2 while Omenihu has not played since tearing his ACL in the playoffs last season. Next steps The Chiefs have won seven of their past eight against Las Vegas heading into Friday’s game, though they no doubt remember the Raiders’ previous trip to Arrowhead Stadium.
