Givenwell founder and chief executive Jonny Mirkin is delighted with the early success of the Dunedin-based startup. PHOTO: LINDA ROBERTSON And judging by the response to Dunedin-founded startup Givenwell — which has recently launched into Australia — more employers are taking heed of that. Givenwell is a wellbeing platform launched by Jonny Mirkin in August following two years of research and development. The original idea was for employers to give their team wellbeing allowances in the form of digital tokens. Employees then accessed a marketplace, where various offerings — which had been curated and vetted — were available and they could spend their tokens confidentially on whatever they chose. Mr Mirkin said last week the response had been "amazing" and the business had now morphed into providing wellbeing for anybody that would receive benefit from it, including the likes of parents buying tokens for their children heading to boarding school or university, and a gifting option was recently launched. There was now a team of 10 based in Dunedin and a chief operating officer had been appointed and was moving south from Wellington. While global expansion was planned, the startup’s headquarters would remain in the city. In the new year, Givenwell would be looking to raise more capital and it was in a fortunate position that it could show "some pretty impressive metrics". A board of directors would also be put in place. He expected Givenwell would become a single wellbeing platform for organisations, replacing health insurance, EAP, wellbeing benefits and other wellbeing resources and apps. Rather than employers spending money via different budgets, it would only involve one budget and their teams could be empowered to go on a wellbeing journey, he said. As the founder of tech company Nomos One, which was bought earlier this year by global finance and technology firm EXA Capital, it had been "fun doing it second time round" and utilising the lessons learned from his first startup, Mr Mirkin said. On January 29, during the main Muhurta of Mauni Amavasya, an estimated six crore devotees will take a holy dip, but preparations will cater to 10 crore. He said, "The Mahakumbh will feature extensive facilities, including 12 km of ghats and an expanded area spanning 10,000 acres. Devotees will have the opportunity to experience the darshan of Char Dham, Dwadash Jyotirlingas, and other significant Jyotirlingas. The event will integrate cutting-edge technology, such as an AI-based Bhashini app in 11 Indian languages, allowing visitors to access information about the Kumbh and services like Khoya-Paya in their preferred language." He added, "The government plans to implement a precise headcount of every attendee and ensure a sustainable, eco-friendly event. The Mahakumbh will feature zero liquid discharge systems, 1.50 lakh toilets, and a ban on single-use plastics. This grand event aims to set a benchmark and drive Uttar Pradesh’s roadmap for economic prosperity." During his address, CM Yogi also shared his views on the Sambhal issue. He highlighted the tragic events that took place 46 years ago in Sambhal, where innocent people lost their lives to barbaric violence. He questioned why the perpetrators of the massacre have not been brought to justice even after decades. Referring to Sambhal's ancient temple, the Chief Minister emphasized its historic significance, including the ancient idol of Bajrang Bali and the Jyotirlinga. “This temple did not reappear overnight. It represents our enduring heritage and the truth of our history,” he said. He criticized those who try to suppress the truth or tarnish cultural events like the Kumbh, emphasizing that voices of truth often face threats and efforts to silence them. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath highlighted the remarkable transformation of the 2019 Prayagraj Kumbh, stating that it redefined expectations. “Anyone who witnessed the Kumbh of 2019 would have seen the out-of-the-box efforts that made it clean, safe, and well-organized. What was once associated with dirt, chaos, stampedes, and insecurity became a divine and grand event,” he said. He credited the success of the 2019 Kumbh to its high standards of cleanliness, management, and security, noting that it was so exemplary that Prime Minister Narendra Modi washed the feet of sanitation workers in appreciation. “It is part of India’s heritage to express gratitude to those who contribute to its success,” he said. The upcoming Mahakumbh 2025, he added, will showcase a unique confluence of faith and modernity. CM Yogi indirectly criticized Congress and opposition parties for claiming exclusive ownership of India's legacy. “Some people wander around with a self-proclaimed contract of representing India and treat Discovery of India as if it were the oldest book of this country,” he remarked. He referenced the historic Supreme Court verdict on Shri Ram Janmabhoomi delivered on November 9, 2019, which resolved a decades-long dispute. Yet, he pointed out, some individuals continue to threaten the judges who delivered the decision. The Chief Minister accused opposition leaders of hypocrisy in the name of the Constitution, citing their no-confidence motion against the Vice President and Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. “The Chairman emphasized his duty to ensure the House functions and public issues are discussed. Yet, these people accused him of bias and moved a no-confidence motion to silence him,” he said. He further criticized attempts to question institutions like the Election Commission for conducting fair elections and the Allahabad High Court for delivering truthful judgments. “These individuals even bring impeachment motions in the Upper House, showing their intention to intimidate anyone who speaks the truth or stands for India’s heritage,” CM Yogi concluded. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath emphasized that the construction of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya has been pivotal in driving development in the region. “Without the Ram Temple, there would have been no airport, no double rail line, and no enhanced connectivity. A squadron of fighter jets that belong to the District of Columbia Air National Guard will transfer to the Maryland National Guard, Gov. Wes Moore and other Maryland leaders said Monday night. Transferring the 121st Fighter Squadron, which operates out of Joint Base Andrews in Prince George’s County, will allow the state to maintain a flying mission as the Air Force phases out its aircraft at Martin State Airport in Middle River. The agreement marks the completion of Maryland officials’ three major priorities during of federal budget negotiations. Full federal funding for the and a commitment from the Commanders to not completely abandon if they move back to Washington, D.C. were also on that shortlist — though the fate of each of them was unclear as negotiations repeatedly derailed last week. Bridge funding was ultimately included in the last-minute compromise that avoided a government shutdown. A measure that would have guaranteed the squadron transfer was in an earlier version but removed, as was a provision to allow D.C. to build a new stadium at the site of the deteriorating RFK stadium, which the city was pushing for in its effort to lure the Commanders from Maryland to their previous home. The Senate passed a separate bill allowing the RFK site change while Moore secured a direct agreement with the Commanders that promises the organization will demolish the existing stadium and help redevelop the site if they relocate. The Air Force squadron switch was handled administratively, with the secretary of the Air Force directing the transfer, according to Moore’s office. “In partnership with our congressional delegation and federal partners, we have advocated vigorously to maintain Maryland’s flying mission, both in the interest of national security and to continue the proud tradition that Maryland plays in defending our country,” Moore said in a statement. “This outcome is good for Maryland, good for our service members, and good for our national security.” The announcement did not include details about how the transfer could change operations for the 121st squadron, how many aircraft and staff are involved or when the transfer might happen. The drop in onion prices and its impact on onion growers got reflected in the state when an angry onion farmer garlanded state minister Nitesh Rane with onions onstage during a religious programme of Nivruttinath Maharaj in Chirai village, Nashik on Monday night. The minister rose to address a gathering at 9 pm when the farmer suddenly arrived on stage and garlanded him with onions. Before the farmer could speak on the mike he was whisked off the stage by security. Later it was revealed that the farmer had come to express his disappointment with the steep drop in onion prices and was frustrated with the fluctuating prices. The farmer was later identified as Mahendra Lahu Suryavanshi and an offence under Bharati Nyay Sanhita (BNS) 223 related to an offence of disobeying an order issued by a public servant. Suryavanshi was detained for some hours and later let off after being issued a notice, police said. A video went viral on the social media where Rane was seen allowing the farmer to express himself. However, before he could speak, a group of security persons and organisers are seen forcibly taking him away from the stage venue. On December 19, deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar had urged the BJP led central government to remove the 20 per cent export duty, citing farmer distress and climate challenges amid surplus crops. In a letter to Union Commerce minister Piyush Goyal, Pawar highlighted issues of onion farmers in Nashik, a key onion-growing district. “The arrival of fresh crops has led to a surplus in agricultural markets, forcing farmers to sell their produce at lower rates, averaging ₹ 2,400 per quintal. The summer yield has been exhausted, and the fresh crop has reached markets across the state . However, farmers are now distressed as they are unable to secure a minimum support price for their produce,” Pawar wrote. The NCP also stated that unseasonal rains and climate change have caused substantial losses to onion growers and further emphasised the need for immediate action to address the economic challenges faced by farmers. The farmers in the district are upset by the sharp decline in onion prices, which have dropped by ₹ 2,000 per quintal in the last 10 days. The onion growing farmers argue that the 20 per cent export duty on onions has failed to stabilise prices leading to frustration.

Jets' Adams: 'Be dope' to snag Rodgers' 500th TDA man who is accused of raping two women at gunpoint in a Framingham store in 1989 will be extradited to Massachusetts following his arrest in Los Angeles over the summer, authorities said. Stephen Paul Gale, 71, was arrested on Aug. 9 after an hour-and-a-half-long police chase down Interstate 405 northbound in Los Angeles, according to the U.S. Marshals Service . “After more than three decades it now appears that Gale’s attempts to evade justice have come to an end,“ Middlesex County District Attorney Marian Ryan said in a statement. “For the two women who were victimized by him in 1989, the wait for answers has been long and painful. While Mr. Gale has made significant efforts to conceal his identity, the efforts by law enforcement were even more relentless.” Gale is charged with four counts of aggravated rape, two counts of kidnapping and one count of armed robbery. Gale walked into the Hit of Miss Store on Route 9 in Framingham in December 1989, the district attorney said. He showed a .357 Magnum handgun and forced two female workers to the back of the store. He made one woman empty money from a locked safe, the store’s register and her pocketbook into a bag, the district attorney said. He made another woman lock the store’s doors and put a sign on the front door saying the store would open late. Gale then forced both women to strip and placed them in separate rooms, the district attorney said. He then sexually assaulted both of them at gunpoint, officials said. When Gale went back to the front of the store, the women left out the back door to a nearby home. Authorities collected evidence that helped get Gale’s DNA. In 2001, a DNA profile was developed for Gale and uploaded to the Combined DNA Index System, an FBI database used to compare DNA profiles. But, there weren’t any profiles that identified Gale. In 2022, law enforcement worked with Parabon Nanolabs, a DNA technology company, to develop new leads to identify Gale, the district attorney said. After a police investigation, DNA samples were taken from Gale’s family. These DNA samples were compared to Gale’s DNA. The evidence and results comparing the two profiles led police to label Gale as the suspect. More News
