Wicked: For Good Features Original Song Co-Written by Cynthia Erivo: ‘I Hope Audiences Are Ready’Pep Guardiola’s side at least avoided the indignity of a sixth successive defeat in all competitions but alarm bells continue to ring at the Etihad Stadium after a dramatic late capitulation. A double from Erling Haaland – the first from the penalty spot – and a deflected effort from Ilkay Gundogan, all in the space of nine minutes either side of the break, looked to have ensured a return to winning ways. Yet Guardiola was left with his head in hands as Feyenoord roared back in the last 15 minutes with goals from Anis Hadj Moussa, Sergio Gimenez and David Hancko, two of them after Josko Gvardiol errors. City almost snatched a late winner when Jack Grealish hit the woodwork but there was no masking another dispiriting result. It was hardly the preparation City wanted for Sunday’s crunch trip to Liverpool, and the Feyenoord fans took great delight in rubbing that fact in. They sung the club anthem they share with Liverpool, You’ll Never Walk Alone, and chanted the name of their former manager Arne Slot, the current Reds boss. Guardiola arrived at the ground with a cut on the bridge of his nose and, once again, his side have been struck a nasty blow. Despite not being at their best, they had dominated early on against what seemed limited Dutch opposition. They threatened when a Gundogan shot was deflected wide and Haaland then went close to opening the scoring when he turned a header onto the post. Feyenoord goalkeeper Timon Wellenreuther gifted City another chance when he passed straight to Bernardo Silva but Grealish’s fierce volley struck team-mate Phil Foden. Foden forced a save from Wellenreuther but City had a moment of alarm when Igor Paixao got behind the defence only to shoot tamely at Ederson. Nathan Ake missed the target with a header but some luck finally went City’s way just before the break when Quinten Timber, brother of Arsenal’s Jurrien, was harshly adjudged to have fouled Haaland. The Norwegian rammed home the resulting spot-kick and City returned re-energised for the second period. They won a corner when a Matheus Nunes shot was turned behind and Gundogan fired the hosts’ second – albeit with aid of a deflection – with a firm volley from the edge of the box. City turned up the heat and claimed their third soon after as Gundogan released Nunes with a long ball and his low cross was turned into the net by a sliding Haaland. 44' ⚽️ Man City 1-0 Feyenoord50' ⚽️ Man City 2-0 Feyenoord53' ⚽️ Man City 3-0 Feyenoord75' ⚽️ Man City 3-1 Feyenoord82' ⚽️ Man City 3-2 Feyenoord89' ⚽️ Man City 3-3 Feyenoord 🤯🤯🤯 — UEFA Champions League (@ChampionsLeague) It seemed City were heading for a morale-lifting victory but a couple of Gvardiol errors changed the script. The Croatian, who had a torrid time in Saturday’s 4-0 thrashing by Tottenham, first horribly misplaced a backpass and allowed Moussa to nip in and round Ederson. Ordinarily that 75th-minute reply would have been a mere consolation and City would close out the game, but Gvardiol had another moment to forget eight minutes from time. Again he gave the ball away and Feyenoord pounced. The ball was lofted into the box and Jordan Lotomba fired a shot that glanced the post and deflected across goal, where Gimenez chested in. Ederson then blundered as he raced out of his area and was beaten by Paixao, who crossed for Hancko to head into an empty net. Amid some moments of unrest in the crowd, when objects were thrown, City tried to rally in stoppage time. Grealish had an effort deflected onto the bar but the hosts had to settle for a draw.

Freshly baked goods are an essential for every holiday season. Get right into the holiday spirt with various ganja holiday treats. Everybody loves to indulge in a sweet treat when the holidays come around. Bake your holiday treats with cannabis infused butter to make any get together a little more fun. Cannabis can also soothe symptoms of anxiety, insomnia, and treat pain. It can help aid with social anxiety symptoms, making it helpful for family get togethers. To activate the cannabinoids in cannabis, decarboxylate your buds by lightly toasting them in an oven or air fryer at 220-240°F (104-116°C) for 30 to 40 minutes. The heat will activate the THC in your cannabis, giving you the desired effect. The quickest way is to use a grinder to break down the cannabis, but breaking up cannabis with your hands works as well. Be careful not to grind up the cannabis too small, because it will be strained later. Melt 1 cup of butter in a pan. (a good ratio is approximately 1:1 but can be changed based on your tolerance). Add 1 cup of water, which helps regulate the temperature and prevents burning. When the butter is melted, add in the cannabis. Simmer on low heat at about 160-200 oF. Simmer for 2 to 3 hours, making sure the mixture never comes to a boil. Place a mesh strainer or cheesecloth over a jar and pour the butter/cannabis mixture through it. Discard the plant material. Dosing is crucial when cooking with cannabis. Start with 1 cup of ground cannabis (around 7 to 10 grams, and adjust based on your tolerance). Take your favorite gingerbread cookie recipe and substitute the butter for freshly made cannabutter. Not only do the cookies look good, the cannabis will keep you warm during the holiday season. Turn your favorite cookie into a cannabis infused holiday treat. Substitute the butter for cannabutter. Ingredients include sugar, baking powder, canna-butter, flower, eggs, salt and vanilla. For added flair, use a cannabis leaf cookie cutter and green icing. Try this modern take on the classic brownie. Add melted cannabutter and sugar together and then add eggs, egg yolk, and vanilla. Stir in oil and cocoa powder. Combine flour, cornstarch, and salt until combined. Stir in chocolate chips and then bake for 30 minutes. The cannabis-infused butter will add richness to this treat. After baking, use your favorite cookie-cutter to add to the fun. Cannabutter is just one way to cook with cannabis. Try making olive oil infused cannabis for your holiday recipes that aren’t as sweet. The olive oil can add moisture to baked goods and blends well with the cannabis taste. Coconut oil can also add flavor and sweetness to your baked goods. Freeze your cannabutter or your baked treat to enjoy them after the holiday season. Be sure to keep your treats out of children’s reach, homemade treats are always enticing to little ones.None
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — The St. Petersburg City Council reversed course Thursday on whether to spend more than $23 million to repair the hurricane-shredded roof of the Tampa Bay Rays' ballpark , initially voting narrowly for approval and hours later changing course. The reversal on fixing Tropicana Field came after the council voted to delay consideration of revenue bonds for a proposed new $1.3 billion Rays ballpark. Just two days before, the Pinellas County Commission postponed a vote on its share of the new stadium bonds, leaving that project in limbo. “This is a sad place. I'm really disappointed,” council chair Deborah Figg-Sanders said. “We won’t get there if we keep finding ways we can’t.” The Rays say the lack of progress puts the new stadium plan and the future of Tropicana Field in jeopardy. “I can't say I'm confident about anything,” Rays co-president Brian Auld told the council members. The Trop's translucent fiberglass roof was ripped to pieces on Oct. 9 when Hurricane Milton swept ashore just south of Tampa Bay. There was also significant water damage inside the ballpark, with a city estimate of the total repair costs pegged at $55.7 million. The extensive repairs cannot be finished before the 2026 season, city documents show. The Rays made a deal with the Yankees to play next season at 11,000-seat Steinbrenner Field, New York's spring training home across the bay in Tampa. Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred said MLB wants to give the Rays and Tampa-area politicians time to figure out a path forward given the disruption caused by the hurricane. Assuming Tropicana Field is repaired, the Rays are obligated to play there for three more seasons. “We’re committed to the fans in Tampa Bay,” Manfred said at an owners meeting. “Given all that’s happened in that market, we’re focused on our franchise in Tampa Bay right now.” The initial vote Thursday was to get moving on the roof portion of the repair. Once that's done, crews could begin working on laying down a new baseball field, fixing damaged seating and office areas and a variety of electronic systems — which would require another vote to approve money for the remaining restoration. The subsequent vote reversing funding for the roof repair essentially means the city and Rays must work on an alternative in the coming weeks so that Tropicana Field can possibly be ready for the 2026 season. The city is legally obligated to fix the roof. “I’d like to pare it down and see exactly what we’re obligated to do,” council member John Muhammad said. The city previously voted to spend $6.5 million to prevent further damage to the unroofed Trop. Several council members said before the vote on the $23.7 million to fix the roof that the city is contractually obligated to do so. “I don’t see a way out of it. We have a contract that’s in place,” council member Gina Driscoll said. “We’re obligated to do it. We are going to fix the roof.” The council had voted 4-3 to approve the roof repair. Members who opposed it said there wasn't enough clarity on numerous issues, including how much would be covered by the ballpark's insurance and what amount might be provided by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. They also noted that city residents who are struggling to repair their homes and businesses damaged by hurricanes Helene and Milton are dismayed when they see so many taxpayer dollars going to baseball. “Why are we looking to expend so much money right away when there is so much uncertainty?” council member Richie Floyd said. The new Rays ballpark — now likely to open in 2029, if at all — is part of a larger urban renovation project known as the Historic Gas Plant District, which refers to a predominantly Black neighborhood that was forced out to make way for construction of Tropicana Field and an interstate highway spur. The broader $6.5 billion project would transform an 86-acre (34-hectare) tract in the city’s downtown, with plans in the coming years for a Black history museum, affordable housing, a hotel, green space, entertainment venues, and office and retail space. There’s the promise of thousands of jobs as well. St. Petersburg Mayor Ken Welch, a prime mover behind the overall project, said it's not time to give up. “We believe there is a path forward to success,” the mayor said. AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/mlbLOS ANGELES — Mina Kimes has a lot going on this week. Like so many other people this time of the year, the analyst for ESPN's "NFL Live" has been busy wrapping presents and preparing for the arrival of out-of-town guests for the holidays. In addition to those typical holiday activities, however, Kimes also has to break down film and attend a Christmas Eve rehearsal ahead of her one-off gig as a studio analyst for the Kansas City Chiefs-Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Ravens-Houston Texans games streaming live Christmas Day on Netflix . "Yeah it's been pretty crazy," Kimes said Monday during a phone interview. "I'm just excited. I usually just do a studio show during the week that I absolutely love, but there's a level of energy that comes with doing television right before kickoff and also during the game and after. ... Like, in real time, let's see how Joey Porter Jr. or George Pickens or any of the injured players look, and their availability and that kind of thing. "And that adds a different element to it that I'm really personally super excited about. But I just love talking ball on television and just to have the opportunity to do this in front of this many people is quite a Christmas gift." The last sporting event streamed live on Netflix was a massive success — an estimated 108 million live viewers in around 65 million households worldwide tuned in Nov. 15 to watch the Mike Tyson-Jake Paul fight — but also a huge headache for many consumers, who complained on social media about buffering issues and losing the feed altogether. Netflix told The Times on Monday that it learned from the struggles it faced during the Tyson-Paul live stream and has optimized its systems to better handle live events since then. Kimes is hopeful that all such issues have been resolved ahead of the two NFL games, both of which will be key to AFC playoff seedings and one of which (Ravens-Texans) will feature a halftime show by Beyoncé . "The technological aspect of this is above my pay grade, but everybody seems pretty confident about it," she said. "Obviously it's gonna be a bajillion eyeballs on these games, so my hope is that on our end when we're on everything's seamless, not just from a tech and streaming standpoint but from a production standpoint. And so far it seems like it will be, just a lot of experienced folks working on this." Netflix's first foray into NFL games will feature a slew of talent from various other platforms. Kimes will be on the Los Angeles studio show, along with anchor Kay Adams (FanDuel TV) and fellow analysts Manti Te'o (NFL Network), Robert Griffin III (formerly of ESPN) and Drew Brees (formerly of NBC Sports). A studio show from Pittsburgh will feature Laura Rutledge (ESPN) as anchor and Devin McCourty (NBC Sports) and Jason McCourty (CBS Sports and ESPN) as analysts. "It's kind of like a Pro Bowl of sorts," Kimes said. "That sounds self aggrandizing, but I guess I mean so far as I get to work with a lot of people who I don't usually get to work with, which is kind of cool. It's a lot of folks from a lot of different networks and that is also something that is kind of like unique about this." Here's more from Kimes' conversation with The Times. (The questions and answers have been edited for length and clarity) Q: How did this all come about for you? A: I can't remember when I first heard about the possibility – a few months ago or something? But whenever my agent told me about it I was really excited for a litany of reasons, one of which was just the opportunity to work on such massively significant games and obviously ones that are gonna have a lot of eyeballs. Really good games, too, by the way — which, I mean, good for Netflix but also great for me because it's a lot more fun to talk about games like the ones we're gonna be discussing on Christmas. Q: Was there any hesitation to do this during the holidays? I know you have a little one at home ... A: Well, here's the good news — he's 14 months old, so I can just tell him Christmas is the next day and he won't know the difference. I have family coming in actually today and even if I wasn't on the show they would be watching it. They're huge football fans. They would have Netflix on all day anyways, so I think they're almost as excited by the idea of just sitting all day and watching me, probably more so than if I was spending time with them because they see a lot of me in person. Q: So your studio show is going to be on all day, before, during and after both games? A: Yeah, that's why everybody's watching halftime, right? To watch our show. Like, 'Come on, enough Beyonce. One song, let's get back. I really gotta hear this analysis.' Q: This has been a busy month for you, after serving as a color commentator for " The Simpsons Funday Football " alternative broadcast of the Cincinnati Bengals-Dallas Cowboys game Dec. 9. How was that experience? A: It was awesome. It was an absolute dream. I'm a crazy "Simpsons" fan and I think we realized early on — me, Drew [Carter] and Dan [Orlovsky] — just to lean all the way into all the "Simpsons" jokes and references. It seems like fans of the show really enjoyed that. Q: You have made numerous appearances on ESPN's " Around the Horn ." What was your reaction to learning that the show will be coming to an end next year? A: That show has meant so much to my career. That's how I really got my start in television at ESPN. I don't think I'd be doing what I'm doing now if not for 'Around the Horn.' ... So it really kind of made me reflect on I guess the role that the show has played [in] my career. I'm gonna miss doing it a lot because I'm an NFL analyst now, but for me it was one of those platforms [where] you could talk about other sports and topics and I always really, really enjoyed it. It's a special show. Q: What are your predictions for the Christmas games? A: It's boring — I got both of the favorites winning, the Ravens and Chiefs. The Steelers' defensive injuries are very concerning. Q: What about a Beyonce prediction? Any special guests you think might join her? A: I think you might see a special guest from Houston. Don't know who that's gonna be, but I predict that whatever it is, people will wish it was twice as long instead of having to listen to me talk. ©2024 Los Angeles Times. Visit latimes.com . SAN ANTONIO — Colorado secured what it said was record insurance coverage for quarterback Shedeur Sanders and Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter as the star duo opted to complete their college careers in the Alamo Bowl rather than sit out and prepare for the NFL draft. Colorado would not disclose the amount of insurance coverage each received, citing privacy laws. Coach Deion Sanders and athletic director Rick George both said it was the largest in college football history. "We happen to have two players that are probably going to be the first two picks of the NFL draft," Sanders said Monday. "We all know who those two are and they have received, I think, the highest number of coverage that has ever been covered in college football. It far exceeds anyone that has ever played this game of college football." While college programs maintain insurance policies for their athletes in case of injury, Colorado increased disability coverage for its entire roster in the Alamo Bowl. Sanders, the coach of the No. 20 Buffaloes, ensured his QB son and two-way star Hunter received larger policies since both are expected to be among the top 10 selections in the upcoming NFL draft. "It was his idea we should get disability insurance for our athletes for this game to ensure that they played and if there was some kind of injury that they would be well taken care of," George said. "So, we worked together on that. We're excited about it. We think it's great that all our players are playing in the game. That's what all bowl games should be like." Colorado (9-3, No. 23 CFP) will face the 17th-ranked BYU Cougars (10-2, No. 17 CFP) in the Alamo Bowl on Saturday. While most teams are scrambling with starters opting out of bowl games this year to enter the transfer portal or NFL draft, the Buffaloes did not lose any player on their two-deep roster. "It's more than what I got (when he played at Kansas State)," Colorado linebackers coach Andre' Hart said. "They gave us a helmet and said pop this on your leg and get out there and play. For them to get that (increased insurance coverage), I just think it's beneficial. To talk about where the game is, where it's going and how leadership is taking care of the players, I thought that's excellent." Shedeur Sanders completed 337 of 454 passes for 3,926 yards and 35 touchdowns this season. Many scouting services have Sanders rated as the top quarterback in this year's draft. Hunter received the Heisman Trophy as a two-way standout at cornerback and wide receiver. He had 92 receptions for 1,152 yards and 14 touchdowns and as a cornerback had four interceptions, broke up 11 passes and limited the opposition to 22 receptions on 688 defensive snaps. "They've taken care of us, everybody," Colorado running back Micah Welch said. "It really means a lot to have every teammate up here. That's a big thing. What I like about Coach Prime, they're taking care of us." Be the first to know Get local news delivered to your inbox!
Robin Lehner tweeted some very scary and dark posts just the other day, and today he broke his silence by texting a close friend about the situation. In a saga that has been unfolding and spilled over into several days, it wasn't until late Friday night that Robin Lehner broke a two-year-long silence to take to his social media account to broadcast a string of messages . Sounding disjointed and emotional, Robin Lehner's message certainly had many worried. In one of the earliest messages, he sounded despondent, at times referring to his brain as 'fully broken,' seeming to renounce his family name as 'evil' and that it should be erased, while in other posts he deflected blame variously upon the NHL and NHLPA, which he claimed blew protocols regarding vaccines, before placing blame on financial hardship with loans. He also let slip that he'd spent time in a suicide ward at one juncture, a revelation which more likely sent shockwaves to more readers' minds than his coming out. Lehner attacked his father for ruining his life, while he thanked some unnamed person within the Islanders organization for helping him through a rough time in his career. One was an outright vitriolic message ripping the Vegas Golden Knights and former coach Peter DeBoer but heaped praise on others such as agent Allan Walsh and former GM Kelly McCrimmon. The final message, however, was decidedly dark with a sense of finality that only added further to the concern for the fans . In a rare moment of connection, Lehner once again broke his silence today and texted a close friend, expressing gratitude for those who have stood by him. Lehner stated that he appreciates those who care. To many fans and analysts, Lehner's posts sounded like a cry for help. A lot are hoping the NHL, NHLPA, and his former teams can offer whatever assistance necessary at this very critical moment. United States women’s head coach Emma Hayes admitted she initially grappled with how best to behave during ‘God Save The King’ ahead of her side’s goalless draw with England in their Wembley friendly. The billing of London-born former Chelsea boss Hayes against England’s Dutch manager Sarina Wiegman – arguably the best two bosses in the women’s game – had generated more buzz in the build-up than the players on the pitch, despite it being a rare encounter between the two top-ranked sides in the world. Hayes enjoyed her return to familiar shores but felt the US lacked the “killer piece” after they looked the likelier side to make the breakthrough. Asked what was going through her mind during the national anthem, Hayes said: “I was definitely mouthing (it), and Naomi (Girma) and Lynn (Williams) could see that I was struggling with where to be and all that. “I got to the end of the anthems and I thought, ‘that’s so ridiculous. I’m proud to be English and I’m proud of our national anthem, and I’m also really proud to coach America’. “Two things are possible all at once. I don’t want to fuel a nationalist debate around it. The realities are both countries are really dear to me for lots of reasons, and I’m really proud to represent both of them.” The Lionesses did not register a shot on target in the first half but grew into the game in the second. US captain Lindsey Horan had the ball in the net after the break but the flag was up, while Hayes’ side had a penalty award for a handball reversed after a VAR check determined substitute Yazmeen Ryan’s shot hit Alex Greenwood’s chest. Hayes, who left Chelsea after 12 trophy-packed years this summer, said: “I’ve been privileged to coach a lot of top-level games, including here, so there’s a familiarity to being here for me. “It’s not new to me, and because of that there was a whole sense of I’m coming back to a place I know. I have a really healthy perspective, and I want to have a really healthy perspective on my profession. “I give everything I possibly can for a team that I really, really enjoy coaching, and I thrive, not just under pressure, but I like these opportunities, I like being in these situations. They bring out the best in me. “You’ve got two top teams now, Sarina is an amazing coach, I thought it was a good tactical match-up, and I just enjoy coaching a high-level football match, to be honest with you. I don’t think too much about it.” Hayes had travelled to London without her entire Olympic gold medal-winning “Triple Espresso” forward line of Trinity Rodman, Mallory Swanson and Sophia Smith, all nursing niggling injuries. Before the match, the 48-year-old was spotted chatting with Wiegman and her US men’s counterpart, fellow ex-Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino , who was also in attendance. England were also missing a number of key attackers for the friendly including Lauren Hemp, Lauren James and Ella Toone, all ruled out with injury. Wiegman brushed aside suggestions from some pundits that her side were content to settle for a draw. She said: “I think we were really defending as a team, very strong. We got momentum in the second half, we did better, and of course both teams went for the win. “So many things happened in this game, also in front of the goal, so I don’t think it was boring. “We wanted to go for the win, but it was such a high-intensity game, you have to deal with a very good opponent, so you can’t just say, ‘Now we’re going to go and score that goal’. “We tried, of course, to do that. We didn’t slow down to keep it 0-0. I think that was just how the game went.”After struggling for several years since 2020, ( ) finally seems to be on a path to an incredible comeback in recent months. What’s behind Air Canada stock’s spectacular recovery? The worst for Air Canada investors seems to be in the rearview mirror as the company continues to benefit from a combination of factors. First, the post-pandemic surging travel demand has played a key role in Air Canada’s turnaround story in recent years. To give you a quick idea about that, the Canadian airline safely moved nearly 13 million customers during its peak summer season in 2024 alone. This surge in travel demand has given a gradual boost to its revenues, which reached $6.1 billion in the third quarter of 2024. Second, Air Canada has shown resilience by addressing operational challenges in recent years, which has led to notably improved efficiency. Despite a 3.8% YoY (year-over-year) drop in operating revenue, the company generated $737 million in cash flow from operating activities in the third quarter, reflecting an improvement of $329 million compared to the same quarter of 2023. This increase highlights the company’s ability to manage costs effectively while maintaining its main focus on long-term growth. Despite global economic uncertainties and volatile fuel prices, Air Canada has managed to remain on the path of a strong financial recovery in the post-pandemic era, which seems to be attracting investors’ attention of late. Is there still an upside for long-term investors? One of Air Canada’s most promising growth strategies right now is its focus on capacity expansion and operational improvement. In the latest quarter, despite global challenges, the airline company boosted its available seat miles by nearly 3% YoY. This measured growth aligns with the steady recovery in travel demand, which could help it capture additional market share in the future. In addition, Air Canada’s recently announced share buyback program reflects management’s confidence in the company’s future. By repurchasing up to 10% of its public float, the Canadian flag carrier plans to enhance shareholder value while addressing the dilution caused by pandemic-era financing. Similarly, its strong liquidity position of $10.2 billion as of the third quarter gives it enough financial flexibility to invest in more growth initiatives. Although Air Canada stock has rallied by well over 50% over the last three months, it still remains well below its pre-pandemic year 2019’s closing level of $49.51 per share. Given this and its continued focus on growth initiatives, this top Canadian stock still has room to climb further.
The S&P 500 climbed 0.5% and was on track to top its all-time high set a couple weeks ago. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 81 points, or 0.2%, to its own record set the day before, while the Nasdaq composite was 0.5% higher, with less than an hour remaining in trading. Stock markets abroad were down, but mostly only modestly, after President-elect Trump said he plans to impose sweeping new tariffs on Mexico, Canada and China as soon as he takes office. Stock indexes were down 0.1% in Shanghai and nearly flat in Hong Kong, while Canada's main index edged down by just 0.1%. Trump has often praised the use of tariffs , but investors are weighing whether his latest threat will actually become policy or is just an opening point for negotiations. For now, the market seems to be taking it more as the latter. Unless the United States can prepare alternatives for the autos, energy products and other goods that come from Mexico, Canada and China, such tariffs would raise the price of imported items all at once and make households poorer, according to Carl Weinberg and Rubeela Farooqi, economists at High Frequency Economics. They would also hurt profit margins for U.S. companies, while raising the threat of retaliatory tariffs by other countries. General Motors sank 8.2%, and Ford Motor fell 2.6% because both import automobiles from Mexico. Constellation Brands, which sells Modelo and other Mexican beer brands in the United States, dropped 3.9%. Beyond the pain such tariffs would cause U.S. households and businesses, they could also push the Federal Reserve to slow or even halt its cuts to interest rates. The Fed had just begun easing its main interest rate from a two-decade high a couple months ago to offer support to the job market . While lower interest rates can boost the overall economy and prices for investments, they can also offer more fuel for inflation. “Many” officials at the Fed's last meeting earlier this month said they should lower rates gradually, according to minutes of the meeting released Tuesday afternoon. Unlike tariffs in Trump's first term, his proposal from Monday night would affect products across the board. Trump’s tariff talk came almost immediately after U.S. stocks rose Monday amid excitement about his pick for Treasury secretary, Scott Bessent. The hope was the hedge-fund manager could steer Trump away from policies that balloon the U.S. government deficit, which is how much more it spends than it takes in through taxes and other revenue. The talk about tariffs overshadowed another set of mixed profit reports from U.S. retailers that answered few questions about how much more shoppers can keep spending. They’ll need to stay resilient after helping the economy avoid a recession, despite the high interest rates instituted by the Fed to get inflation under control. Kohl’s tumbled 17.6% after its results for the latest quarter fell short of analysts’ expectations. CEO Tom Kingsbury said sales remain soft for apparel and footwear. A day earlier, Kingsbury said he plans to step down as CEO in January. Ashley Buchanan, CEO of Michaels and a retail veteran, will replace him. Best Buy fell 4.7% after likewise falling short of analysts’ expectations. Dick’s Sporting Goods topped forecasts for the latest quarter thanks to a strong back-to-school season, but its stock lost an early gain to fall 1.4%. A report on Tuesday from the Conference Board said confidence among U.S. consumers improved in November, but not by as much as economists expected. J.M. Smucker jumped 5.4% for one of the biggest gains in the S&P 500 after topping analysts' expectations for the latest quarter. CEO Mark Smucker credited strength for its Uncrustables, Meow Mix, Café Bustelo and Jif brands. Big Tech stocks also helped prop up U.S. indexes. Gains of 2.8% for Amazon and 2% for Microsoft were the two strongest forces lifting the S&P 500. In the bond market, Treasury yields rose following their big drop from a day before driven by relief following Trump’s pick for Treasury secretary. The yield on the 10-year Treasury climbed to 4.30% from 4.28% late Monday, but it’s still well below the 4.41% level where it ended last week. In the crypto market, bitcoin continued to pull back after topping $99,000 for the first time late last week. It's since dipped back toward $91,600, according to CoinDesk. It’s a sharp turnaround from the bonanza that initially took over the crypto market following Trump’s election. That boom had also appeared to have spilled into some corners of the stock market. Strategists at Barclays Capital pointed to stocks of unprofitable companies, along with other areas that can be caught up in bursts of optimism by smaller-pocketed “retail” investors. Madison County Schools superintendent David Gilliam has been working at Madison County since 1992, first starting as a teacher and coach, and for the last six years as the Superintendent. Now, after more than 30 years, Gilliam is retiring. Randy Neely will be the new Madison County Superintendent starting in January. During the Dec. 12th Madison County School Board meeting, Gilliam delivered his final superintendent’s report. In it, he encouraged new Superintendent Neely and the board members to “look beyond those measures that people usually look at at schools.” Instead of enrollment numbers and similar stats, he encouraged the board members to instead look at “the metrics that really make a difference.” He explained that if a school system is working things like the poverty rate, the literacy rate, average household income, and the health index should all improve. “If a school system is doing what it needs to be doing, yeah the state assessment scores will be good, yes attendance will be good, yes our budget will be in line. But we should also see those other pieces move,” said Gilliam. Gilliam told the Richmond Register that he believes that the county’s investment in the Ignite Academies and their attempts to value career and technical education will have a positive impact on local industries for years to come. Gilliam said that industries seeking to move into Richmond and Madison County have spoken with him during his time as Superintendent, and before that as Chief Academic Officer, about the infrastructure that is in place at the local school systems to support the work force. “Not only the career and technical education, but also the quality of our schools in general, so that it’s producing well-rounded, capable, intelligent people,” said Gilliam. While Gilliam encouraged the board to look at other statistics to determine how the school system is doing, Madison County is performing well on state metrics. According to the Kentucky Department of Education’s Report Card for Madison County, the school has seen a drop-out rate of around 1% over the last three years, with an attendance rate of over 91%, and a graduation rate of 94%. These are all in line with averages across the state. The Report Card also states that Madison County overall has high performance on state assessments in reading, mathematics, science, social studies, and writing. “We have seen those numbers improve. But what I was talking about was the bigger picture, the real reason we are doing that,” said Gilliam. “All of those numbers are good, and we can see those immediately. But ultimately, does it really lead to quality jobs in local industry that are high paying and high functioning?” Gilliam said that the creation of the Ignite Academy has at least encouraged students, who before showed little interest in career and technical studies, to explore that education pathway. Gilliam told the Register that he is proud of the creation of the Ignite Academy, of partnerships created with local economy leaders, but that looking back at his tenure with Madison county what he was most proud of was the culture created across the district. “It’s valuing Madison County Schools as an important part of our community. I feel like we have continued to grow that over the last 10, 12 years. and I think that is probably the thing that I feel good about,” said Gilliam. Gilliam said that he hopes that as he leaves this position people look at him and think that he “left it better than he found it.” “That’s what I hope people would be able to say. ‘He came in, he worked hard, and during his time the school improved,” said Gilliam. Gilliam said that despite his retirement as Superintendent, he plans to still be involved some way in education. Though, at the same time, he shared that he has a farm and cows he plans to take care of. “I’m probably going to take some long mornings, and sit on the porch and drink coffee,” said Gilliam.Colorado adds record insurance coverage for Sanders and Hunter before Alamo BowlMahakumbh 2025: Akhilesh Yadav Questions Yogi Govt`s Preparedness For Grand Event; How True Are His Claims? — Check Here
