Sarin as a good candidate who gave a neck-and-neck fight to the UDF and BJP, Mr. Govindan said that it was because of Dr. Sarin that the CPI(M) could close its vote gap with the BJP. Dr. Sarin too claimed that he could increase the LDF vote share by nearly 1,000. The UDF could now make the SDPI a member of the front, he said. BJP candidate C. Krishnakumar claimed that his party had retained its vote base in the Palakkad municipality. “However, we will examine the defeat,” he said. The BJP candidate said the former BJP spokesperson Sandeep Varier had made no impact in the election results. “No Varier or Nair could do anything to us,” said Mr. Krishnakumar. ‘Poor candidate selection’ Mr. Varier blamed Mr. Krishnakumar’s defeat on the BJP’s poor candidate selection and held the party State president responsible for it. He said the BJP had no candidate other than Mr. Krishnakumar for all posts, from milk society to Parliament. “The people of Palakkad have destroyed the BJP-CPI(M) deal of communal politics,” he said. The ratio balances out the equation for teams that may turn the ball over more than others simply because it moves the ball at such a high rate. The bad teams are the ones that turn the ball over often without the added benefit of creating easy shots when they do take care of the ball. The website claims he was 'spotted staying overnight' in Cartmel before he resumed his ride, which raised £9million for the charity, the next morning. However, McGuinness, 51, denies the claims and instructed his lawyer to take on Popbitch, which is known for breaking gossipy stories about celebrities. HELSINKI >> Finnish authorities today seized a ship carrying Russian oil in the Baltic Sea on suspicion it caused the outage of an undersea power cable connecting Finland and Estonia a day earlier, and that it also damaged or broke four internet lines. The Cook Islands-registered ship, named by authorities as the Eagle S, was boarded by a Finnish coast guard crew that took command and sailed the vessel to Finnish waters, a coast guard official said at a press conference. “From our side we are investigating grave sabotage,” said Robin Lardot, director of the Finnish National Bureau of Investigation. “According to our understanding, an anchor of the vessel that is under investigation has caused the damage,” he added. The Finnish customs service said it had seized the vessel’s cargo and that the Eagle S was believed to belong to Russia’s so-called shadow fleet of aging tankers that seek to evade sanctions on the sale of Russian oil. Two fiber-optic cables owned by Finnish operator Elisa linking Finland and Estonia were broken, while a third link between the two countries owned by China’s Citic was damaged, Finnish transport and communications agency Traficom said. A fourth internet cable running between Finland and Germany and belonging to Finnish group Cinia was also believed to have been severed, the agency said. “We are coordinating closely with our allies and stand ready to support their investigations,” said a spokesperson for the U.S. National Security Council, adding that the incident underscored the need for closer international cooperation on safeguarding critical undersea infrastructure. “We are following investigations by Estonia and Finland, and we stand ready to provide further support,” NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said in a post on social media X. Both the Finnish and Estonian governments held extraordinary meetings today to assess the situation, they said in separate statements. The Eagle S Panamax oil tanker crossed the Estlink 2 electricity cable at 1026 GMT on Wednesday, a Reuters review of MarineTraffic ship tracking data showed, identical to the time when Fingrid said the power outage occurred. United Arab Emirates-based Caravella LLCFZ, which according to MarineTraffic data owns the Eagle S, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Peninsular Maritime, which, according to MarineTraffic acts as a technical manager for the ship, declined to comment outside of the company’s opening hours. ‘DISRUPT AND DETER’ Damage to subsea installations in the Baltic Sea has now become so frequent that it is difficult to believe this was caused merely by accident or poor seamanship, Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna said in a statement. “We must understand that damage to submarine infrastructure has become more systematic and thus must be regarded as attacks against our vital structures,” Tsahkna said. The 658 megawatt (MW) Estlink 2 outage began at midday local time on Wednesday, leaving only the 358 MW Estlink 1 in operation between the two countries, operator Fingrid said. More than 60 high school students in Los Angeles County learned to use technology to make business plans in an after-school program, which ended last week with the Young Innovators Accelerator Pitch Competition. The after-school program took place at six across Los Angeles County. The centers are run by nonprofits in under-resourced neighborhoods with funding from the Best Buy Foundation, the Annenberg Foundation and the Greater Los Angeles Education Foundation (GLAEF), the philanthropic arm of the Los Angeles County Office of Education. The Teen Tech Centers aim to give area students a chance to play with the latest technology — and gain job skills in the process, according to Sam Gelinas, vice president of programs, strategy and development at GLAEF. The Young Innovators Accelerator Pitch Competition, now in its second year, furthers the focus on job skills, he said. “The process of developing a budget, developing all the assets, all of that stuff, they’re building some of those soft business skills, and then also some of the tech skills like actually designing a deck and those kinds of things,” Gelinas said. Curriculum and training for the program were provided by the Los Angeles Economic Equity Accelerator and Fellowship, a nonprofit based out of California State University, Los Angeles, Gelinas said. “The trainers were young and dynamic and sort of met students where they were and walked them through the elements of entrepreneurship,” he said. On top of learning to use technology to build a business plan, many of the students came up with services that center on tech. For example, the winning idea at last week’s competition was an artificial intelligence-driven ed-tech tool, pitched by 14-year-old Gabriel Cardenas. Called ByteAi, the tool would use AI to transform complex classroom subjects into “bite-sized” lessons, without telling students any answers, according to Cardenas, a freshman at the California Academy of Math and Science in Long Beach. “My teacher would give me an assignment, and it was really hard for me to completely understand what I really needed to learn,” Cardenas said. “With this, you could ask the AI to break it down and make it more understandable, and it would give you key highlights, quizzes and games.” Among the six business plans that made it to the competition last week, three others were also based on tech: a peer-to-peer mental health social app, an interchangeable lens camera with smart connectivity and auto focus, and an app to help people find healthy food options. Cardenas took home first place and $1,400 for ByteAi, while Tristen Trudgeon won second place and $1,000 for BeSeen, the mental health app. Third place and $600 went to a team of seven students for their pitch to create a community market where homeless people could work. Three other semi-finalists each received $150. Gelinas said he hopes the Young Innovators Accelerator Pitch Competition will continue to be an annual event. Funding for the program came from GLAEF, the Best Buy Foundation, Annenberg Tech and the Calley Foundation, he said.Randy Macchi, Houston Public Works director, announced during a Dec. 11 City Council meeting that Houston Public Works has installed 125,000 new remote water usage reading equipments as of Thanksgiving. How we got here As part of Mayor John Whitmire’s Water Improvement Plan , Houston Public Works began replacing broken remote-read devices that were causing inaccurate water bills for Houston residents earlier this year. Diving in deeper The new remote readers were installed to residential and commercial customers, with nearly 100,000 of those installations done at single-residential households, Macchi said. “We’ve been able to go through and make a five-year plan, and condense it into a few months and get it done really quickly,” Macchi said. Macchi said the department is working on communicating with residents to transition them back to their actual usage bill and verifying the accuracy of the readings. “Roughly 50,000 people have already transitioned and have been back on actual usage,” Macchi said. “There’s 75,000 right now that are still on set, [and] 30,000 in the next 60 days will transition back to actual usage. Looking ahead Macchi noted that there is still a total of 437,000 water meters across the city of Houston, with 273,000 devices in the ground that will need to be replaced. Erin Jones, the Houston Public Works spokesperson, said the department will address those in the future. “The next 273,000 in the future, which are customers who have working devices, will need a replacement at some point soon," Macchi said. "Many of them have devices that are older technology, they don’t provide the advanced metrics, the advanced alert systems that the customers that have received the new devices have. They are going to need to be upgraded." Council members commended Macchi and the public works department on the installations, and how they worked diligently on a problem that has plagued the city for years. Abbie Kamin, District C, said she has seen a decrease in water bill complaints and applauded the department for ramping up the installations. “During the pandemic, we had huge equipment issues, we could not get the equipment that we needed to install a lot of these,” Kamin said. “To see it ramp up, so expeditiously, it’s tremendous.”
