2 Dec 2024 Cate Blanchett on AI, G7 and Syria crisis Krishnan Guru-Murthy Presenter A G7 summit may not seem like a promising setting for a film. But ‘Rumours’ is a kind of comedy horror political satire in which world leaders find themselves tackling zombie bog monsters and a giant brain, as well as world crises. I spoke to Cate Blanchett, who plays the German Chancellor, and Nikki Amuka-Bird, who plays the British Prime Minister, ahead of the film’s release in cinemas this Friday. TTEC Digital wins Cisco Reimagine Customer Experiences Partner of the Year - AmericasRacing Optics® Introduces Game-Changing Twilight Tearoff to Enhance Visibility in Low-Light Racing ConditionsWith Kyle Teel out of the picture, who is the Red Sox ’ catcher of the future? Teel was one of four prospects who Boston traded to the White Sox on Wednesday to acquire frontline starter Garrett Crochet who had a 3.58 ERA, 2.69 FIP, 209 strikeouts and 33 walks in 32 starts (146 innings) in 2024. Parting with Teel must have been extremely difficult for chief baseball officer Craig Breslow because the Red Sox have no other top catching prospects at the upper levels of the minors. Teel was expected to begin 2025 at Triple-A Worcester but his major league ETA is sometime this coming summer. Boston now has no top prospects remotely close to the big leagues at arguably the most important position. It appeared like Connor Wong, who is under team control through 2028, would eventually become Teel’s backup. Now it looks like he could remain the No. 1 catcher long-term. That said, Wong must improve his defense significantly. He is putting a major focus on defense this offseason after he ranked in the one percentile in fielding run value, third percentile in blocks above average and ninth percentile in framing during 2024. “We’re really optimistic about Connor and what he has done, what he did last year,” Breslow said Wednesday at the Winter Meetings. “I think he’s going to continue to improve. But we’re obviously going to need more depth. We’re going to explore all paths to doing that. I think we can think about both the near-term and the long-term. But given Connor’s still got plenty of control, he’s going to wear a Red Sox uniform for a long time. We feel like for at least now we’ve got a starting catcher.” Boston already was in the market for a backup catcher before the trade . Johanfran Garcia now is Boston’s top catching prospect but he’s likely a few years away from the big leagues. He also is coming off major knee surgery after tearing ligaments in his knee in May . A National League scout said in summer 2023 that Garcia has a plus arm to all bases and “projects as an above-average skill-position player, supplying a 5-hole bat.” He batted .385 (20-for-52) with a .467 on-base percentage, .596 slugging percentage, 1.063 OPS, two homers and five doubles in 14 games (60 plate appearances) at Low-A Salem in ‘24 before his season came to an abrupt end. The Venezuela native turned 20 earlier this month and has appeared in only 29 games at Low A. So a lot of development remains. Brooks Brannon is another interesting 20-year-old catching prospect but he’s also several years away from the majors like Garcia. He has never played above Low A where he has appeared in just 60 games and recorded 255 plate appearances. Brannon, who has raw power, was thought of highly coming out of high school. The Red Sox drafted him in the ninth round (No. 279 overall) out of Randleman High in North Carolina in 2022, then signed him to a well-above slot value bonus of $712,500. The second highest ninth round bonus that year was $390,000 less. Only one draft pick in rounds 5-9 received a higher bonus than Brannon did. Baseball America wrote before the 2024 season , “Defensively, Brannon faces questions about whether he has the athleticism to stay behind the plate, but he has strong hands, plus arm strength and works relentlessly.” Brannon went 21-for-68 (.309) with a .347 on-base percentage, .456slugging percentage, two home runs and four doubles in 16 games in the 2024 Arizona Fall League. Boston drafted 22-year-old catcher Hudson White in the ninth round out of Arkansas in July. Baseball America wrote ahead of the draft , “White has been inconsistent as a defender behind the plate and he’ll need to add arm strength and tighten up his release, though he’s a solid receiver and ultimately has a chance to be an average defender.” Nathan Hickey , a 2021 fifth round pick out of Florida, remains in the Red Sox system but he has not developed enough defensively to be considered someone who can help the big league club at the catcher position. More On Red Sox ProspectsDETROIT (AP) — Starting in September of 2027, all new passenger vehicles in the U.S. will have to sound a warning if rear-seat passengers don’t buckle up. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Monday that it finalized the rule, which also requires enhanced warnings when front seat belts aren’t fastened. The agency estimates that the new rule will save 50 lives per year and prevent 500 injuries when fully in effect, according to a statement. The new rule will apply to passenger cars, trucks, buses except for school buses, and multipurpose vehicles weighing up to 10,000 pounds. Before the rule, seat belt warnings were required only for the driver’s seat. Under the new rule, outboard front-seat passengers also must get a warning if they don’t fasten their belts. Front-center seats will not get a warning because NHTSA found that it wouldn’t be cost effective. The agency said most vehicles already have warnings for the outboard passenger seats. The rule also lengthens the duration of audio and visual warnings for the driver’s seat. The front-seat rules are effective starting Sept. 1 of 2026. Rear passengers consistently use seat belts at a lower rate than front passengers, the agency says. In 2022, front belt use was just under 92%, while rear use dropped to about 82%. About half of automobile passengers who died in crashes two years ago weren’t wearing belts, according to NHTSA data. The seat belt rule is the second significant regulation to come from NHTSA in the past two months. In November the agency bolstered its five-star auto safety ratings to include driver assistance technologies and pedestrian protection. Safety advocates want the Department of Transportation, which includes NHTSA, to finish several more rules before the end of the Biden administration, because President-elect Donald Trump has said he’s against new government regulations. Cathy Chase, president of Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety, urged the department to approve automatic emergency braking for heavy trucks and technology to prevent impaired driving.
OutKick contributor Riley Gaines joined 'Fox & Friends First' to discuss her reaction to the 'alarming' number of medals lost as 200 female golfers sign a letter to the LPGA raising concerns over its transgender athlete policy. The state of Washington could be one of the first in the nation to introduce a third gender category for high school sports in order to prevent biological males from competing against girls. The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) announced a proposal to create a separate open division for transgender athletes to compete in. One of the amendments proposes the creation of a girl's division and an open division in which athletes could participate, regardless of whether their gender identity matches their assigned sex at birth. "In order to maintain fair and equitable competition, participation in girls' sports and girls' divisions of sports is restricted to students who were assigned female at birth. The purpose of this policy is to offer clarity with respect to the participation of trans and gender-diverse student-athletes. Additionally, this policy encourages a culture in which student-athletes can compete in a safe and supportive environment, free of discrimination," the proposal reads. CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM The state's high school athletes are currently allowed to compete based on their gender identity rather than their biological sex. The WIAA policy states that each athlete will participate in programs "consistent with their gender identity or the gender most consistently expressed," and there are not even any medical or legal requirements. Bills that would prohibit transgender girls from participating in girls' and women's sports have been introduced but not passed. Washington is one of 25 states in the U.S. to have laws in place to protect trans inclusion in girls' and women's sports. The proposal comes weeks after a school board in the state voted to send a letter to the WIAA pleading for it to reconsider its current rules that allow trans athletes to compete against females. The Central Valley School Board, which oversees schools in Spokane Valley and Liberty Lake, Washington , voted to send a message to the WIAA over the issues after much debate at a school board meeting. The resolution, titled "Supporting Equity and Safety in Female Sports," claims that the entire board is comprised of female members who have either competed in athletics themselves or have daughters who competed in athletics. One of the women, an unidentified current cross-country runner, shared her experience during the hearing. "When I ran cross-country for Greenacres Middle School, a boy who was biologically male but identified as female competed on the girls' team," she said. "While I respect everyone's right to participate in sports, the situation made me question the fairness of competing of someone who had the physical advantage associated with male biology." In May, a trans athlete competed in a girls' cross-country championship and won. Veronica Garcia, who was previously known as Devina Brown and Donovan Brown, won the 400m heat race in the girl's division with a time of 55.59 seconds. The second-place runner finished at 58.83 seconds. In the finals, Garcia won with a time of 55.75 seconds, a full second ahead of the second-place runner who finished with 56.75. SJSU TRANSGENDER VOLLEYBALL SCANDAL: TIMELINE OF ALLEGATIONS, POLITICAL IMPACT AND A RAGING CULTURE MOVEMENT The victory prompted outrage by women's rights activists, including former NCAA swimmer and OutKick contributor Riley Gaines. The idea of a third gender category in high school and college sports to accommodate trans athletes has been floated as opposition to trans inclusion has stirred outrage across the country over the last year. Deep-blue states like Washington, as well as Oregon and California, which also have laws in place to protect trans inclusion, have been considered the places where a third category makes the most sense due to the influx of trans athletes competing against females in those states. CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP Steve Garvey, the former California Senate candidate and Los Angeles Dodgers World Series champion, previously told Fox News Digital in an exclusive interview that he would support President-elect Trump's ban on trans athletes in girls' and women's sports, and that he believes trans athletes should compete against each other. In Riverside, California, Martin Luther King High School is facing a student uprising over the issue after two cross-country runners wore T-shirts that read "Save Girls' Sports," in response to a trans athlete taking a varsity roster spot from a female athlete. The two female athletes filed a lawsuit against the school, and another teammate gave an impassioned plea during a board meeting, which went viral on social media, to remove the trans athlete from the team. Now, hundreds of the school's students have committed to wearing the T-shirts every week. Follow Fox News Digital’s sports coverage on X , and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter . Ministers said an extra £15 million will be made available for supply chain businesses and workers affected by changes at Tata’s Port Talbot site in south Wales. Welsh Secretary Jo Stevens said the move means a fund to support businesses across Wales heavily reliant on Tata steel will be increased to £30 million. She also announced that more businesses will be able to apply for the funds, and the value of individual grants is increasing to up to £250,000 for businesses to invest in equipment, property, technology. The Government said there has been “significant demand” on the existing funding, with almost 40 businesses employing 2,000 people having begun the application process. Grants worth millions of pounds are expected to be released in the new year. The increase in funding is in anticipation of more people leaving Tata in early 2025 through the company’s voluntary redundancy scheme. Ms Stevens said: “This Government is acting decisively to support workers and businesses in Port Talbot. “We are doubling the funding available to businesses and workers and widening access to grants to ensure we support as many people as possible. “In just four months we have announced more than £40 million in investment. We said we would back workers and businesses affected by the transition at Port Talbot and we are doing exactly that. “While this remains a very difficult time for Tata workers, their families and the community, we are determined to support workers and businesses in our Welsh steel industry, whatever happens.”Lumo Therapy Launches High-Energy Light Therapy Moodlight 12-20-2024 12:48 AM CET | Sports Press release from: ABNewswire Lumo Therapy, a groundbreaking innovation in personal wellness, is now available to customers seeking effective, non-invasive light therapy solutions. There’s an extra responsibility that comes with coaching the St. John’s men’s basketball team, one rooted in the precedent that Hall of Famer Lou Carnesecca established during his legendary run. “For St. John’s fans, you’ll always tell stories about Lou because of what he represented. I along with all the other coaches who coached here are caretakers of Lou’s legacy. That’s all we are,” Red Storm coach Rick Pitino said Monday on WFAN following Carnesecca’s death at the age of 99 last week . “We’re caretakers at St. John’s of what Lou built and I’m very proud to be a caretaker of Lou’s legacy.” Pitino spoke glowingly of Carnesecca, with their decades-long relationship spanning to when the two opposed each other in the Big East in the 1980s . Over the past two years, the two bonded while Pitino attempts to follow in Carnesecca’s footsteps and guide the program to its first Final Four since Carnesecca did so in 1985. “Lou epitomized (to St. John’s) what John Wooden was to UCLA ... or Mike (Krzyzewski) is to Duke,” Pitino said. “He epitomized all the great things about St. John’s. Humble, hardworking, just cared about the players more than himself. Just a special, special man. “ Pitino and Carnesecca roamed opposing Big East sidelines spanning the 1985-86 and 1986-87 seasons when Carnesecca neared retirement and Pitino guided Providence. The younger coach described the St. John’s icon as “very intense,” noting that Carnesecca “hated officials” and would never sit down. He recalled one game when Providence edged St. John’s at the buzzer — likely the Friars’ 79-78 win on Feb. 14, 1987 at MSG — and how Carnesecca went “ballistic” since he believed one second remained. Pitino admits Carnesecca was probably right, but he sent his players to the showers to avoid continuing the game. “Great games, great coach, great person. One of the few people I’ve met in my life in the coaching profession that nobody ever said a bad word about,” Pitino said. “We could write a book with the bad words about me, but with Lou, nobody would ever say a bad word. Kind person, giving person. “When you beat him, he gave you that one handshake, looked you in the eye and said, ‘Good luck.’ When he beat you, he looked you in the eye and he shook with two hands, he took the other hand and put it on your forearm. He was much happier at that moment.” The two didn’t have to worry about clock differences once Pitino took the reigns in Jamaica last year, but the old veteran still let his thoughts be known. Pitino noted how Carnesecca developed a reputation for running practices that lasted three to three-and-a-half hours, yet there was Carnesecca last summer asking him if he believed in water breaks. Carnesecca also told Pitino that a St. John’s coach should follow tradition and wear long pants, while Pitino prefers donning shorts when the team practices. “All of New York should toast Lou,” Pitino said. “St. John’s is built on kids that don’t have money .... its hardworking people that need a break in life and we try to lift people out of poverty, that’s the mission of St. John’s, and nobody exemplified what the standards of St. John’s stood for more than Lou Carnesecca.”Why does red wine cause headaches? Our research points to a compound found in the grapes’ skinIt may suit the political viewpoint of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Samaj, ideological parent of the ruling BJP, to keep igniting the debate over population in India, as its chief Mohan Bhagwat did in saying most recently that a society would perish if its population growth rate fell below 2.1 and that the total fertility rate (TFR) needs to be at least three, towards which he recommends parents to have at least three children. What the RSS chief did not bring up, wisely enough, this time is the comparative growth rate of communities as designated by religion because that could only add an incendiary element at a time when the debate is already loaded with differing views on India’s population growth and desired controls over population that have yielded positive results over the last few decades. As the world’s most populous country, India, with a population now exceeding 144 crore, is already weighed down with numbers that defeat the demographic dividend often spoken of when referring to the young average age of the country’s people. Even at the current growth rate, India is projected to have a population of 150 crore by 2030 and 166 crore by 2050. To put such a dividend from greater human capital to good use, there would have to be opportunities for productive employment, which can come only with higher education standards, skilling and training, of course, provided that economic growth can be sustained to provide for a population growing even at the lower TFR. The focus should not so much be on population control, which is not a problem now, as about raising the standard of living and quality of life of a country with so many people. Only a far higher economic growth than the currently projected 7 per cent can even attempt to provide improved standards of living for all. The challenge of providing for people in sheer terms of total number in one country can easily be guessed at when we see the figures in perspective. It is not only the RSS that is viewing the TFR of 2.1 in a different light as the chief ministers of southern states of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu have also been advocating larger families as they feel the south, having followed the family planning concepts better for decades, will suffer when and if the parliamentary seats for each state are recast proportionate to their population in this decade. How wrong all of them can be is best reflected when considering how difficult it is already for governments to provide basic education to children, job opportunities for the working age population and healthcare for all, most of all for the ageing population. Very soon India will have the largest working population in the world, and it will continue to be a problem that only about a quarter of the women are employed. The task is about improving the lives of those living now and those who are to be expected to join them soon at the existing rate of TFR. How to achieve that for all Indians when educational attainments are not up to the mark and the workforce lacks basic skills and the country's employment rates are still one of the lowest. While arguing about TFR and the perceived political need for larger families, sight should not be lost of the fact that 81.35 crore people are being given free foodgrains in 2024 and India ranks 101 out of 116 nations on the Global Hunger Index despite a vast PDS system. Politicians must think before speaking to people on the need for larger families. They may believe it is good politics, but it is very poor economics when it comes to providing for the country’s people.
