Former US president Jimmy Carter has died aged 100. Mr Carter, a former peanut farmer, served one term in the White House between 1977 and 1981, taking over in the wake of the Watergate scandal and the end of the Vietnam War. After his defeat by Ronald Reagan, he spent his post-presidency years as a global humanitarian, winning the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002. His death on Sunday was announced by his family and came more than a year after he decided to enter hospice care. He was the longest-lived US president. His son, Chip Carter, said: “My father was a hero, not only to me but to everyone who believes in peace, human rights and unselfish love. “My brothers, sister and I shared him with the rest of the world through these common beliefs. “The world is our family because of the way he brought people together, and we thank you for honouring his memory by continuing to live these shared beliefs.” World leaders have paid tribute to Mr Carter, including US President Joe Biden, who was one of the first politicians to endorse Mr Carter for president in 1976 and said the world had “lost an extraordinary leader, statesman and humanitarian”. He said: “Over six decades, we had the honour of calling Jimmy Carter a dear friend. But, what’s extraordinary about Jimmy Carter, though, is that millions of people throughout America and the world who never met him thought of him as a dear friend as well. Our founder, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, passed away this afternoon in Plains, Georgia. pic.twitter.com/aqYmcE9tXi — The Carter Center (@CarterCenter) December 29, 2024 “With his compassion and moral clarity, he worked to eradicate disease, forge peace, advance civil rights and human rights, promote free and fair elections, house the homeless, and always advocate for the least among us. “He saved, lifted, and changed the lives of people all across the globe.” Irish President Michael D Higgins said Mr Carter was “a principled man who dedicated his life to seeking to advance the cause of peace across the world”. He added: “On behalf of the people of Ireland, may I express my sympathies to President Carter’s children and extended family, to President Joe Biden, to the people of the United States, and to his wide circle of colleagues and friends across the globe.” Mr Carter is expected to receive a state funeral featuring public observances in Atlanta and Washington DC before being buried in his home town of Plains, Georgia. A moderate democrat born in Plains in October 1924, Mr Carter’s political career took him from the Georgia state senate to the state governorship and finally, the White House, where he took office as the 39th president. His presidency saw economic disruption amid volatile oil prices, along with social tensions at home and challenges abroad including the Iranian revolution that sparked a 444-day hostage crisis at the US embassy in Tehran. But he also brokered the Camp David Accords between Egypt and Israel, which led to a peace treaty between the two countries in 1979. After his defeat in the 1980 presidential election, he worked for more than four decades leading the Carter Centre, which he and his late wife Rosalynn co-founded in 1982 to “wage peace, fight disease, and build hope”. Under his leadership, the Carter Center managed to virtually eliminate Guinea Worm disease, which has gone from affecting 3.5 million people in Africa and Asia in 1986 to just 14 in 2023. Mrs Carter, who died last year aged 96, had played a more active role in her husband’s presidency than previous first ladies, with Mr Carter saying she had been “my equal partner in everything I ever accomplished”. Earlier this year, on his 100th birthday, Mr Carter received a private congratulatory message from the King, expressing admiration for his life of public service.magical underwater world

OTTAWA — Prime Minister Justin Trudeau defended his assertion that he would support the arrest in Canada of Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu on an International Criminal Court warrant, after a Liberal MP said it “discredits” the court. The Opposition leader Pierre Poilievre called the prime minister’s comments “ridiculous.” “Canada supports international law,” Trudeau told Toronto radio host John Moore Friday morning. “We have to trust that the institutions we’ve built to protect international law are actually going to do their job. “Everyone wants to support decisions on the international stage that they agree with, but that’s not the way a justice system works.” Trudeau said on Thursday that he would “abide by” the international court’s arrest warrant were Netanyahu to visit Canada. The ICC issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and ex-Israeli defence minister Yaov Gallant Thursday, stating that there was “ reasonable grounds” to believe that the two intentionally targeted civilians in Gaza during its ongoing retaliatory war against Hamas. But Montreal MP Anthony Housefather registered his disapproval with the ICC’s decision Thursday morning on X . “Israel was attacked by terrorists on Oct 7. The warrant issued by the ICC today against Netanyahu and Gallant claims their crimes started as early as October 8. A day Israel was in shock, grief and mourning. The ICC discredits itself by its actions today,” he wrote. Poilievre blasted Trudeau over his defence of the ICC warrants on Friday, calling the prime minister’s position “ridiculous.” “It just shows once again how extreme Justin Trudeau has become,” Poilievre told AM640’s Greg Brady. In a separate interview, he added, “The prime minister of Israel is a democratically elected leader whose country is responding to an unprovoked invasion, by thousands of well-armed, Iranian-funded terrorists who ... carried out mass rape and other atrocities deliberately targeted at civilians.” He said the prime minister should instead be calling for the arrest of the leaders of Iran, who fund and promote terrorism, including the Hamas attacks. “But instead, he’s calling for the arrest of the country that has been the victim of all of these attacks,” he said. Israel never signed on to the Rome Statute establishing the ICC in 1998, and has repeatedly maintained that the court has no jurisdiction over its affairs. Series record: Virginia Tech leads 61-38-5. WHAT’S AT STAKE? The annual Commonwealth Cup rivalry game has a little more on the line this year as both teams need a win to become bowl eligible. For the Hokies, that’s a disappointing position to be in. Coming off a year where it won five of its last seven games – including a 55-17 annihilation of UVA in Charlottesville – and with most of its lineup returning, Tech fancied itself a dark horse for the College Football Playoff. Instead, it’s lost three in a row and might be without quarterback Kyron Drones. For Virginia, being a win away from its first bowl appearance under Tony Elliott has renewed enthusiasm about the direction of the program. The Cavaliers were picked to finish next-to-last in the ACC during the preseason. KEY MATCHUP Last week, Virginia gave up nine sacks of quarterback Anthony Colandrea to SMU and the Hokies allowed Duke to drop Pop Watson seven times. This game may come down to which offensive line can protect its QB the best. While both teams have struggled to block people, Virginia Tech has been far more successful at getting to opposing quarterbacks. Its 31 sacks are seventh most in the ACC, while Virginia’s 17 rank next to last. PLAYERS TO WATCH Virginia: WR Malachi Fields. A year ago, Fields scored Virginia’s only two touchdowns in the 55-17 rivalry loss, both in the second half. In what could be his final game playing for his hometown school, he enters the game ranked ninth in program history in receiving yards and needs two receptions to move into the top 10 in catches. Fields has caught a pass in 26 straight games. Virginia Tech: DE Antwaun Powell-Ryland. “APR,” who transferred from Florida before the 2023 season, is tied for the ACC lead with 13 sacks and leads the conference with 16 tackles for loss. He has twice had four sacks in a game, against both Old Dominion and Boston College, and is the first Tech player to post a double-digit sack total since 2005.
