Sean “Diddy” Combs is using the “But Donald Trump ” defense in his latest bid for a bail release in time for Thanksgiving. Combs’ lawyers have already tried several times to get the incarcerated ex-mogul out on bail . But when prosecutors argued against his latest attempt, making the case that Combs had been trying to influence jurors from behind prison walls, his team cited Trump’s defense that he reserves the right to “criticize and speak out against the prosecution and the criminal trial process that seek to take away his liberty,” in a few filing . “The court should apply Trump’s heightened standard when considering Mr. Combs’ speech,” Combs’ attorney team claims. ADVERTISEMENT Combs was arrested on September 16 in the lobby of a Manhattan hotel, and has remained in prison while awaiting a May 5, 2025 trial for his three-count indictment on racketeering conspiracy, sex trafficking, and transportation to engage in prostitution charges. Between the raids on his home and the many lawsuits accusing him of sexual and physical abuse and forcible drugging, Combs’ legal troubles have been at the center of the news cycle for nearly a year. Citing Trump’s legal defense at length in the new filing, Combs’ lawyers drew a comparison to the “PR campaign” the prosecution accuses him of running from jail to woo jurors to Trump’s defense of his own comments regarding Trump v. United States , the case that would have evaluated his alleged attempts to overturn the 2020 election, before those charges were dropped on Monday . Trump constantly shared public thoughts on the trial via social media, raising the question of whether those comments constituted obstruction of justice. Trump’s team argued , however, that “Only a significant and imminent threat to the administration of criminal justice will support restricting Mr. Trump’s speech.” Combs said that defense should apply to him as well, as his comments about “being a ‘revolutionary’ or about a ‘racist’ prosecution involves thoughts ‘that this prosecution is politically motivated or that he is innocent of the charges against him’—core protected speech,” his lawyers wrote in the filing. On that point, Combs’ defense concludes, “The government is essentially arguing for a standard in which the entire Press community—and civil plaintiffs and the government itself—can wage war against Mr. Combs’ reputation but Mr. Combs can’t even try to influence public opinion himself in response,” which, they write, “is simply not the law.”
REGINA — Saskatchewan's fall legislative sitting ended Tuesday with political barbs traded across the aisle after Premier Scott Moe promised a better tone two weeks ago. The swipes began when Opposition NDP Leader Carla Beck told the assembly Moe should offer immediate affordability relief, including suspending the 15-cent-a-litre gas tax and scrapping the provincial sales tax on ready-to-eat grocery items and children's clothing. In reply, Moe said there is no sales tax on groceries and that Beck should go speak to federal NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh. “What we see unfortunately from members opposite, Mr. Speaker, decade after decade, leader after leader is the same old questions, the same old tactics and the same old NDP,” Moe said. The remarks drew ire from Opposition members, with one saying the Saskatchewan Party deserves a lump of coal for Christmas. “The premier knows full well we don’t support the carbon tax, but what he doesn’t seem to understand is how much families in this province are struggling,” Beck said. The jostling continued. Upon questioning for not removing the PST from children’s clothing, Crown Investments Minister Jeremy Harrison told the house that New Democrats don't know how to grow the economy. He also urged heckling Opposition member Nathaniel Teed to get up and speak. “I’d encourage the member for Saskatoon-Meewasin to get up and ask the next question if he has so much to say from his chair,” Harrison said. “What we are committed to -- and what this session really has been focused on -- is affordability.” In late November, Moe had promised better civility in the assembly and that government members would not send the Speaker harassing text messages. Earlier this year, former Speaker Randy Weekes accused government members of bullying him. Moe told reporters Tuesday he’s leaving it up to others to judge whether the tone has changed. “We are not the Opposition. We are the government of Saskatchewan,” Moe said. “We should conduct ourselves accordingly, and I would hope throughout this abbreviated session this fall that the people of Saskatchewan can be proud of the individuals.” Beck told reporters her party will remain tough on issues of affordability, health care, education, crime and homelessness. “Decorum is important, but that doesn’t mean that we should put on kid gloves when it comes to the very real issues that are facing Saskatchewan people,” she said. The Opposition introduced six emergency motions in the assembly this sitting, including ones that urged the province to suspend the fuel tax, remove the PST, launch a committee to fix health care and investigate high food prices in the province’s remote north. Each motion failed after they were rejected by government members. “We believe Saskatchewan people do need some affordability relief,” Beck said. “We will continue to push for the things that Saskatchewan people tell us are most important to them.” Moe said the province has introduced its own affordability measures and is also prepared to strike a task force with nurses and doctors to address health-care issues. His government passed legislation last week that provides broad income tax relief, saving an average family of four more than $3,400 over four years. Another bill keeps the carbon levy off home heating. Saskatchewan has not remitted carbon levies to the federal government in the past year, arguing it should be exempt after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced a carve-out for heating oil. The federal government has said it reached a deal with Saskatchewan over the issue by securing 50 per cent of what was owed until the dispute is resolved. “This session was largely about setting the foundation for both enacting our platform but providing the change that Saskatchewan people have asked for, and we feel that we have done that,” Moe said. The legislative sitting is to resume in the spring with the provincial budget. This report by The Canadian Press was first published Dec. 10, 2024. Jeremy Simes, The Canadian Press

“Gladiator II” asks the question: Are you not moderately entertained for roughly 60% of this sequel? Truly, this is a movie dependent on managed expectations and a forgiving attitude toward its tendency to overserve. More of a thrash-and-burn schlock epic than the comparatively restrained 2000 “Gladiator,” also directed by Ridley Scott, the new one recycles a fair bit of the old one’s narrative cries for freedom while tossing in some digital sharks for the flooded Colosseum and a bout of deadly sea-battle theatrics. They really did flood the Colosseum in those days, though no historical evidence suggests shark deployment, real or digital. On the other hand (checks notes), “Gladiator II” is fiction. Screenwriter David Scarpa picks things up 16 years after “Gladiator,” which gave us the noble death of the noble warrior Maximus, shortly after slaying the ignoble emperor and returning Rome to the control of the Senate. Our new hero, Lucius (Paul Mescal), has fled Rome for Numidia, on the North African coast. The time is 200 A.D., and for the corrupt, party-time twins running the empire (Joseph Quinn and Fred Hechinger), that means invasion time. Pedro Pascal takes the role of Acacius, the deeply conflicted general, sick of war and tired of taking orders from a pair of depraved ferrets. The new film winds around the old one this way: Acacius is married to Lucilla (Connie Nielsen, in a welcome return), daughter of the now-deceased emperor Aurelius and the love of the late Maximus’s life. Enslaved and dragged to Rome to gladiate, the widower Lucius vows revenge on the general whose armies killed his wife. But there are things this angry young phenom must learn, about his ancestry and his destiny. It’s the movie’s worst-kept secret, but there’s a reason he keeps seeing footage of Russell Crowe from the first movie in his fever dreams. Battle follows battle, on the field, in the arena, in the nearest river, wherever, and usually with endless splurches of computer-generated blood. “Gladiator II” essentially bumper-cars its way through the mayhem, pausing for long periods of expository scheming about overthrowing the current regime. The prince of all fixers, a wily operative with interests in both managing gladiators and stocking munitions, goes by the name Macrinus. He’s played by Denzel Washington, who at one point makes a full meal out of pronouncing the word “politics” like it’s a poisoned fig. Also, if you want a masterclass in letting your robes do a lot of your acting for you, watch what Washington does here. He’s more fun than the movie but you can’t have everything. The movie tries everything, all right, and twice. Ridley Scott marshals the chaotic action sequences well enough, though he’s undercut by frenetic cutting rhythms, with that now-familiar, slightly sped-up visual acceleration in frequent use. (Claire Simpson and Sam Restivo are the editors.) Mescal acquits himself well in his first big-budget commercial walloper of an assignment, confined though he is to a narrower range of seething resentments than Crowe’s in the first film. I left thinking about two things: the word “politics” as savored/spit out by Washington, and the innate paradox of how Scott, whose best work over the decades has been wonderful, delivers spectacle. The director and his lavishly talented design team built all the rough-hewn sets with actual tangible materials the massive budget allowed. They took care to find the right locations in Morocco and Malta. Yet when combined in post-production with scads of medium-grade digital effects work in crowd scenes and the like, never mind the sharks, the movie’s a somewhat frustrating amalgam. With an uneven script on top of it, the visual texture of “Gladiator II” grows increasingly less enveloping and atmospherically persuasive, not more. But I hung there, for some of the acting, for some of the callbacks, and for the many individual moments, or single shots, that could only have come from Ridley Scott. And in the end, yes, you too may be moderately entertained. The Jaguars (2-10) claimed Reynolds off waivers from the Broncos on Wednesday, adding the journeyman to help offset season-ending injuries to Christian Kirk and Gabe Davis. The 29-year-old Reynolds missed the last eight games, with the bulk of those coming after the shooting. “Yeah, man, one of them things I had rather put behind me,” Reynolds said following practice Friday, his first public comments since the incident. “But I mean anybody going through that, man, it is a crazy ordeal. But, hey, I’m here now. I’m in sunny Florida. I’m just blessed to be here.” Reynolds and another man were shot as they drove from a strip club in the early morning hours of Oct. 18, about the time the Broncos were returning from a 33-10 win at New Orleans. Denver police arrested two men in connection with the shooting, which involved at least 30 rounds getting fired into the vehicle carrying Reynolds and his companions. The men have been charged with six counts of attempted murder, assault and other felonies. Reynolds was shot once in his left arm and once in the back of his head. “Was tough for a few weeks, but I had a good support system behind me,” Reynolds said. “A lot of the organization over there was helping me out a lot, so they made it easier for me to kind of transition through that whole process.” His mom was there, too, taking off work to be with him on weekends. “She’s always been a big part of my life,” Reynolds said. “Always been in my corner whenever she can. It’s been awesome to have her traveling and just seeing her at my games, man. It’s awesome.” Reynolds has 12 receptions for 183 yards and a touchdown this season. He has 232 catches for 3,116 yards and 20 scores in eight NFL seasons with the Los Angeles Rams, Detroit, Tennessee and Denver. He signed a two-year, $9 million contract with the Broncos in 2024. “You put on the tape, he’s obviously been in a couple of spots, and he’s been a guy that’s a bigger, taller, athletic receiver,” Jaguars coach Doug Pederson said. “Again, gives us depth where we’re obviously missing Christian and Gabe. Definitely gives us something that we can continue to develop that room, I think. “It helps us in the way that we’re trying to win these games. We’re trying to go out and play well, and he gives us an opportunity to do that. So, we’re excited to get him going a little bit and see how he can help.” The Jaguars play Sunday at Tennessee (3-9).

AdvancedPCB Welcomes Gregory Halvorson as New CEOIt is fair to say that ( ) doesn't get anywhere near as much attention as the likes of ( ) or ( ). But that doesn't mean that this ASX 300 stock isn't a high-quality option with a bright future. Just ask the team at Goldman Sachs, which is tipping the billing and customer care solution provider's shares as a buy right now. What is the broker saying about the ASX 300 tech stock? Goldman was pleased with Hansen's annual general meeting update, which saw management reiterate its belief that it can continue to grow its revenue organically by 5% to 7% each year for the foreseeable future. It said: HSN's AGM update highlighted mgmt's view that +5-7% organic revenue growth is sustainable, driven by structural digital transformation tailwinds across both verticals. Per our analysis, HSN's FY25E guidance implies that sales in the core business (ex Powercloud) are accelerating to ~8% y/y in FY25E, following a trend that started in FY20A of consistent improvements in organic growth. HSN is in late-stage discussions for several large-sized contracts (some >A$30mn in TCV), which may be incremental to the +5-7% range in FY25E (and/or support an increase to the revenue growth guidance in future years). The broker also sees the recently acquired Powercloud business as a significant driver of growth in the future. Goldman believes that once its cost outs are complete, it will hit an earnings inflection. Goldman adds: Bringing forward profitability to 2H25E (vs 4Q25E) and providing detail around cost-out execution (incl. reducing headcount from 390 to 140) increases our confidence in HSN's ability to bring Powercloud's margins toward ~30% (FY27 GSe), particularly given headcount was ~50 before Powercloud's global expansion (i.e. further room to cut costs). HSN's stated ~A$27mn of annualised cost-out to date is almost 50% of Powercloud's pre-acquisition cost base and in our view implies Powercloud should be entering FY26E generating ~A$10-15mn of annualised EBITDA – a key pillar of HSN inflecting from +7% EBITDA growth in FY25E to +24% in FY26E (we sit +6% vs FY26E VA Cons.). Big returns Goldman thinks that the ASX 300 tech stock is being undervalued by the market. It explains: We believe FY26E is the appropriate year to capitalise into valuation as Powercloud moves into profitability. On this basis, HSN is trading on 9.4x EV/EBITDA (vs ~11x historical average), and is on 0.7x growth-adjusted vs 1.5x AU Tech peers. In light of this, the broker has retained its buy rating with an improved price target of $6.35. Based on its current share price of $5.57, this implies potential upside of 14% for investors. In addition, a 1.8% dividend yield is expected in FY 2025.Memphis fights off No. 2 UConn in OT in Maui Invitational thriller
