The concert will be held at 6:30 PM in the East High Auditorium and will include Meadowview and East Ridge middle school bands, the Hurricane Jazz Band, the Morristown-East Percussion Ensemble, Surprise Chamber ensembles, and the Morristown-East concert band. Members were selected for the Carson-Newman honors band, an amazing opportunity to grow their skills, relationships, and resumes. Students who attended this event include Ethan Ogle, Samantha Gorghis, Dorian Carpenter, Emma Wolfe, Hayden Sharp, Malachi Brooks, Ellie Johnson, Tyler Holt, Adrienne Stepp, Jon McMann, Emily Herrington, Jack Blair, Hannah Stepp, Samfred Toledo, Chris Ramos, and Andrea Castillo Gil. Our band -specifically the Brass Quintet and the Woodwind Ensemble- was also recently invited to perform at the Chamber of Commerce Breakfast held at the Home Trust Bank and they did not disappoint! Finally, the band was invited to play in the Morristown Christmas parade, freezing their fingers off yet sounding incredible. All of the hard work our band is putting in is really showing, and even if you cannot come out to see the concert, you should make an effort to watch one of their performances. Speaking of artists who will be going places, all our Arts kept very busy over break with the All-- East Choir, the Speech and Debate competition, and the BETA Convention. Break kicked off with members of our choir traveling all the way to Lee University to perform in the All-East Choir. The three-day event concluded with the All East Choir Concert, the link to which can be found on social media: I personally watched the livestream through Facebook. The choir was incredible, and the beautiful songs gave me chills multiple times. A pioneering study has introduced a novel approach to enhance the treatment of large sacral chordomas using carbon ion therapy. The study focuses on optimizing dose-averaged linear energy transfer (LETd), a critical parameter in radiotherapy that directly influences treatment efficacy for challenging tumors. The findings, published in Medical Physics , could significantly impact clinical outcomes for patients with these aggressive and resistant cancers. Carbon ion therapy is a highly precise cancer treatment that exploits the unique physical and biological properties of carbon ions. While traditionally successful in treating smaller tumors, its efficacy diminishes with larger targets due to lower LETd distribution, reducing treatment potency. The recent study by MedAustron Ion Therapy Center and Karl Landsteiner University of Health Sciences (KL Krems) addressed this gap by leveraging advanced treatment planning system (TPS) functionalities. Breakthrough findings "Our research demonstrates that by optimizing LETd distributions, we can significantly enhance the biological effectiveness of carbon ion therapy in large tumors, such as sacral chordomas, without compromising safety or precision," says Prof. Markus Stock, senior author of the study, head of the Division of Medical Physics with an emphasis on Particle Therapy at KL Krems and Head of Medical Physics at MedAustron. The study compared conventional and LETd-optimized treatment plans for large tumors exceeding 250 cm3. It revealed that LETd optimization achieved: By employing cutting-edge LETd optimization techniques integrated into the RayStation TPS, an advanced TPS for radiation therapy, the team in collaboration with Prof. Piero Fossati (Director of the Carbon Ion Therapy Program at MedAustron and Prof. of Radiation Oncology at KL Krems) ensured robust dose coverage while tailoring high-LET zones to resistant tumor regions. Implications for clinical practice This advancement provides a potential lifeline for patients with large, previously difficult-to-treat tumors. "Large chordomas are often associated with inferior clinical outcomes due to their size and proximity to sensitive organs," notes Dr. Mansure Schafasand, first author of the study and colleague of Prof. Stock. "Our optimized planning strategy is an important step towards improving survival rates and quality of life for these patients." This study underscores the importance of LETd as a predictive factor for treatment success. It also aligns with recent research in so-called "LET painting" strategies. Here LET levels are deliberately modulated within the tumor to target resistant tumor regions. While there are hundreds of separate services a business or government agency can take advantage of, “cloud computing” simply refers to relying on remote servers – complex computer systems on the internet – to store, manage, and process your information, opposed to running your operations on a local server or a personal computer. Cloud computing is cost-effective and scalable, and generally more secure than traditional computing. AWS re:Invent kicked off with Amazon CEO Andy Jassy unveiling Amazon Nova, a new and “groundbreaking” set of AI models designed to efficiently and accurately handle a variety of tasks involving text, images, and videos. For example, the AI can generate content, like a video, or understand the content inside of a video (or document or audio file). Upping the AI arms race against the likes of OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Meta and Google Gemini, Amazon Nova’s upcoming “speech-to-speech” model – expected in early 2025 – will be like talking to a real human instead of text prompts that mostly power gen AI today. In fact, Jassy discussed its ambitious “any-to-any” model coming next year. “So, you’ll be able to input text, speech, images, video and output text, speech, images and video,” he said. “This is the future of how frontier models can be built and consumed.” Jassy also highlighted Nova’s affordability, claiming the models are up to 75% less expensive than competitors, which could help level the playing field for smaller organizations on tighter budgets. Wearable device is like a digital ‘guide dog’ for the blind Nova aside, the most impressive demos at AWS re:Invent were tied to accessibility. For one, .lumen is a company that makes wearable glasses that mimic the core features of a guide dog. Resembling a VR headset, the user could navigate around city streets by relying on a combination of audio cues and haptic (vibration) feedback – based on what the headset “sees” – to guide the wearer not unlike pulling their hand in a given direction as a guide dog would. “These glasses are designed to be a scalable solution to the needs of the roughly 300 million people who are visually impaired, of which 40 million are fully blind,” .lumen CEO Cornel Amariei explained to Postmedia at AWS re:Invent. “Guide dogs are a great solution, they can do amazing things, but there are only about 28,000 service dogs in the world, and so we asked ourselves, ‘How can technology do something about this?” said Amariei, who traveled from Romania to Sin City to showcase the .lumen glasses. Along with feeling the cues for obstacles and directions, the wearer hears feedback, such as “curb up” or “stairs down,” as well as info tied to street crossings, escalators, park benches, pedestrians, and more. The headset processes info up to 100 times per second. Users can give the glasses voice commands to navigate to specific places. Maps are downloaded to be used offline to preserve battery life, which is a “full day” of moderate use, or about 2.5 hours of continuous walking, Amariei said. Texting is limited and interpreters can be cost prohibitive. Sign-Speak adds a third option. Powered by AWS, the startup has developed AI technology that recognizes American Sign Language (ASL) and translates it into spoken words – and vice versa. So, imagine you’re on a video call with someone deaf or hard of hearing and when you speak, an avatar, of sorts, will sign what you say to a deaf person in near real-time, and when they sign back, captured by a webcam, you’ll hear a human voice translate the signing. “Our goal is really making sure deaf people get access everywhere,” Sign-Speak CEO Yami Payano explained at AWS re:Invent. While the primary focus is on online video communication between employees, such as a platform like Microsoft Teams or Zoom, Payano said they’re also developing a free tool for smartphones for in-person communication. “Yes, so, just as we’re now both in the same room, we could also communicate effectively with Sign-Speak, with the phone as the virtual interpreter,” she said. “Right now, our system is equal to the latency of an interpreter, a few seconds, which deaf people are used to, since ASL and English are two completely different languages,” Payano added. Digital gift card platform On Me has launched a five-year partnership with Mastercard . The company announced the collaboration Wednesday (Dec. 4), along with the news that it had raised $1.7 million in pre-seed funding, money it will use to expand its retailer partnerships. “Advancing the industry from magnetic swipe technology pioneered in the 1980s to sleek, modern mobile wallets, with Apple Pay and Google Pay integration, On Me provides consumers with the ability to purchase and checkout seamlessly with just a few taps on your phone,” the company said in a news release. The company says its efforts are aimed at providing a more vibrant gift card experience, while also keeping plastic cards out of landfills and preventing fraud. On Me pointed to data from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) showing that gift card-related fraud was a $217 million problem in 2023. The FTC issued a warning about gift card scams last year, telling consumers that would-be fraudsters “might say to put money on an eBay, Google Play, Target or Apple gift card. They might send you to a specific store — often Walmart, Target, CVS or Walgreens. The Lakers find themselves in a familiar position under Rob Pelinka - hovering around .500 with clear roster needs as the trade deadline approaches. Jonas Valanciunas The most discussed target on the Lakers' rumor mill continues to be Jonas Valanciunas, who becomes trade-eligible on December 15th. The Wizards center is averaging 11.8 points and 7.6 rebounds on a team-friendly $30.3 million deal. Acquiring Valanciunas could provide a powerful interior presence that LA desperately needs in order to ease the pressure on Anthony Davis. 2. Zach LaVine and Torrey Craig Another potential blockbuster trade would send D'Angelo Russell, Gabe Vincent, and Rui Hachimura to Chicago for Zach LaVine and Torrey Craig. LaVine's explosive scoring (20.4 PPG) and athleticism would give the Lakers a legitimate third star, though it would significantly deplete their depth. 3. Nikola Vucevic Several commentars have suggested that the Bulls could also be a partner in a deal centered around Nikola Vucevic, who's putting up impressive numbers (20.4 points, 9.9 rebounds), making a manageable $20 million annually. Cameron Johnson and Dorian Finney-Smith Rumor has it that the Lakers have considered an ambitious swing trade that would package Russell, Hood-Schifino and draft picks to the Brooklyn Nets in exchange for Cameron Johnson and Dorian Finney-Smith. US ski star Mikaela Shiffrin said Wednesday that she's "starting to feel a little bit more human" after suffering a puncture wound in a giant slalom crash but confirmed she won't race at Beaver Creek, Colorado, this month. "This is another fairly ambiguous injury and really hard to put a timeline of when I'll be either back on snow or back to racing," Shiffrin said in a video posted on social media. "But I do know that I will not be starting in Beaver Creek." Shiffrin had already said after Saturday's crash she didn't expect to be ready for the Colorado races, a downhill on December 14 and a super-G on December 15. On Wednesday, she said that whatever object caused the puncture in her abdomen also left "tore a cavern" in her oblique muscles. She said she had also undergone further testing to check for possible damage to her colon. "There were some air bubbles where the puncture came pretty close to the colon," she said.
