Blackhawks have lots to prove in first of back-to-back games vs. IslandersBlencowe Resources (LON:BRES) Stock Price Down 6.7% – Here’s Why
NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stock indexes rose to more records Wednesday after tech companies talked up how much of a boost they’re getting from the artificial-intelligence boom. The S&P 500 climbed 0.6% to add to what’s set to be one of its best years of the millennium. It’s the 56th time the index has hit an all-time high this year after climbing in 11 of the last 12 days . The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 308 points, or 0.7%, while the Nasdaq composite added 1.3% to its own record. Salesforce helped pull the market higher after delivering stronger revenue for the latest quarter than analysts expected, though its profit fell just short. CEO Mark Benioff highlighted the company’s artificial-intelligence offering for customers, saying “the rise of autonomous AI agents is revolutionizing global labor, reshaping how industries operate and scale.” The stock price of the company, which helps businesses manage their customers, jumped 11%. Marvell Technology leaped even more after delivering better results than expected, up 23.2%. CEO Matt Murphy said the semiconductor supplier is seeing strong demand from AI and gave a forecast for profit in the upcoming quarter that topped analysts’ expectations. All the optimistic talk helped Nvidia , the company whose chips are powering much of the move into AI, rally 3.5%. It was the strongest force pushing upward on the S&P 500 by far. They helped offset an 8.9% drop for Foot Locker, which reported profit and revenue that fell short of analysts’ expectations. CEO Mary Dillon said the company is taking a more cautious view, and it cut its forecasts for sales and profit this year. Dillon pointed to how keen customers are for discounts and how soft demand has been outside of Thanksgiving week and other key selling periods. Retailers overall have offered mixed signals about how resilient U.S. shoppers can remain. Their spending has been one of the main reasons the U.S. economy has avoided a recession that earlier seemed inevitable after the Federal Reserve hiked interest rates to crush inflation. But shoppers are now contending with still-high prices and a slowing job market . This week’s highlight for Wall Street will be Friday’s jobs report from the U.S. government, which will show how many people employers hired and fired last month. A narrower report released Wednesday morning suggested employers in the private sector increased their payrolls by less last month than economists expected. Hiring in manufacturing was the weakest since the spring, according to Nela Richardson, chief economist at ADP. The report strengthened traders’ expectations that the Fed will cut its main interest rate again when it meets in two weeks. The Fed began easing its main interest rate from a two-decade high in September, hoping to offer more support for the job market. The central bank had appeared set to continue cutting rates into next year, but the election of Donald Trump has scrambled Wall Street’s expectations somewhat. Trump’s preference for higher tariffs and other policies could lead to higher inflation , which could alter the Fed’s plans . Fed Chair Jerome Powell said Wednesday that the central bank can afford to cut rates cautiously because inflation has slowed from its peak two years ago and the economy remains sturdy. A separate report on Wednesday said health care, finance and other businesses in the U.S. services sector are continuing to grow, but not by as much as before and not by as much as economists expected. One respondent from the construction industry told the survey from the Institute for Supply Management that the Fed’s rate cuts haven't pulled down mortgage rates as much as hoped. Plus, “the unknown effect of tariffs clouds the future.” In the bond market, the yield on the 10-year Treasury fell to 4.18% from 4.23% late Tuesday. On Wall Street, Campbell’s sank 6.2% for one of the S&P 500’s sharper losses despite increasing its dividend and reporting a stronger profit than analysts expected. Its revenue fell short of Wall Street’s expectations, and the National Football League’s Washington Commanders hired Campbell’s CEO Mark Clouse as its team president. Gains for airline stocks helped offset that drop after JetBlue Airways said it saw stronger bookings for travel in November and December following the presidential election. It also said it’s benefiting from lower fuel prices, as well as lower costs due to improved on-time performance. JetBlue jumped 8.3%, while Southwest Airlines climbed 3.5%. All told, the S&P 500 rose 36.61 points to 6,086.49. The Dow climbed 308.51 to 45,014.04, and the Nasdaq composite rallied 254.21 to 19,735.12. In stock markets abroad, South Korea’s Kospi sank 1.4% following a night full of drama in Seoul. President Yoon Suk Yeol was facing possible impeachment after he suddenly declared martial law on Tuesday night, prompting troops to surround the parliament. He revoked the martial law declaration six hours later. In the crypto market , bitcoin climbed near $99,000 after Trump said he would nominate Paul Atkins , a cryptocurrency advocate, to chair the Securities and Exchange Commission. Investigations into the matter revealed that the defendants specialised in love scam, using various fake social media accounts. Fraudulent documents were also recovered from them.WOOD carvers from Tugaya, Lanao del Sur, known for their intricate wood carving and brasswares featuring Okir and other Maranao patterns, are set to enhance their craft through technical training programs under an initiative by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST). The Forest Products Research and Development Institute (FPRDI) of the DOST has partnered with Tugaya’s local government and Bangsamoro agencies of the Ministry of Science and Technology-BARMM (MOST-BARMM) and the Ministry of Trade, Investment and Tourism-BARMM (MTIT-BARMM) in launching the “Likhain at Linangin Obra mula sa Kahoy [LiLOK]: Valuing the Wood Carving Industry in the Philippines” program. The project aims to improve the quality, marketability, and sustainability of Tugaya’s wood carving industry, while preserving its cultural heritage. “We are confident that the LiLOK program will significantly contribute to the development of the local wood carving industry in the Philippines. Indeed, there are science-based solutions even for challenges related to arts and culture,” DOST Secretary Renato U. Solidum Jr. said. Several key challenges identified by artisans include issues with wood drying, finishing and preservation, alongside the dwindling supply of raw materials and declining interest in carving among women and youth. Based on the US Foreign Agricultural Service’s report, the Philippines relies on imports for 75 percent of its wood and wood products, with the bulk of these consisting of plywood, veneered panels, laminated wood, and both coniferous and non-coniferous wood, either sawn or chipped lengthwise. Further data from the Climate Change Commission indicated that from 2001 to 2022, the country experienced a loss of 1.42 million hectares of forested land, marking a 7.6 percent decline in its overall tree cover. The LiLOK program will address these concerns through “science-based interventions, technical training, and value chain mapping,” which will document Tugaya’s cultural history and suggest strategies for market expansion. “Again, this is another milestone project for DOST-FPRDI as we continue our commitment to use science, technology and innovation to protect and preserve our local culture,” DOST-FPRDI Director Rico J. Cabangon said. A Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) for the initiative was signed on December 2, at the Provincial Tourism Office in Marawi, Lanao del Sur, led by DOST-FPRDI Director Cabangon, MOST Lanao del Sur Provincial Director Alinader Sarangani, MTIT BARMM Lanao del Sur Provincial Director Mohammad Aquil A. Mamanite, and LiLOK Project Leader Jennifer M. Conda. The initiative will also collaborate with partners, such as the University of the Philippines Open University and UP Los Baños Forestry Development Center, to harmonize policies on the wood carving sector and provide technical support. Funded by the National Research Council of the Philippines, the program will extend its reach to other carving communities across the country, including those in Hungduan, Ifugao; Guagua, Pampanga; Paete, Laguna; Palawan; and Mogpog, Marinduque. Navigating the new energy frontier: Investors can find opportunities amid the transition20th Convocation: Mbah Hails ESUT’s Speedy Transformation Into Centre Of ExcellenceThe Eagles (6-6) hit 14 three-pointers on Sunday during a match-up with long-time rival Madison Central (10-2) in the title game of the Richmond Car and Truck Center Holiday Classic. And that outstanding long-range shooting was a big reason why they had an eight-point lead early in the fourth quarter. "They hit a couple from really deep," Madison Central coach Allen Feldhaus said. Casen Nobbe's fifth three-pointer of the game put Madison Southern up 61-56 with 5:07 left in regulation. The Eagles, though, didn't hit again from long range again. The Indians, however, did. Will Richardson connected a pair of three-pointers in the closing minutes as the Indians rallied for a 73-69 victory in Richmond. Central closed the game on a 12-2 run which pushed their winning streak to six games. Jake Feldhaus had 33 points and 16 rebounds, while Cody Morrison had 17 points for Central. Richardson finished with 12 points and was 3-of-4 from three-point range. Nobbe had 29 points (5-of-9 three-pointers) for Southern, while Micah Whitaker had 25 points on 7-of-9 shooting from three-point range. "We needed someone to step up and hit one — and he didn't hesitate," Feldhaus said of Richardson. "He was ready to shoot and he stepped into them. Those were huge shots and they came at the right time." The teams met on Dec. 20 in Richmond and the Indians had to rally from a second-half deficit to claim a 71-59 victory. On Sunday, the game was tied 20-20 after one quarter before Central took a 42-38 lead into the break. Southern was 9-of-15 from long range in the opening half, including a 6-of-8 performance from Whitaker. "I don't think I've ever had anyone hit six in one half against us," Feldhaus said. "We heard about it at halftime," Richardson said of his team's defensive performance in the opening half. The Eagles hit a trio of three-pointers in the third and ended the quarter with a three-point advantage. Southern's lead jumped to 58-50 on Whitaker's final three-pointer of the game. "I didn't see a sense of panic in our guys," Feldhaus said. "I think they thought they could make a run." Central tied the game on a Richardson three with 1:45 left, but Nobbe put his team back in front moments later. Morrison tied the game with 49 seconds left, then hit 1-of-2 free throws. Central sealed the win when Feldhaus scored on a putback with 11.5 left. "As a shooter, it's (comforting) to know you can shoot, and if you miss, there's a big guy down there who will get every rebound," Richardson said of Feldhaus. Feldhaus came into the game averaging 12.3 points a game. In the first game with Southern, the junior had 23 points and 13 rebounds despite battling foul trouble. On Sunday, Feldhaus was 12-of-15 from the field, 9-of-10 at the line, had nine offensive rebounds and two blocks — and was named the tournament's most valuable player. "They just don't have the size (to match-up with Jake)," Richardson said. "He had 16 rebounds tonight and I know he can do that every game." Led by Feldhaus, the Indians out-rebounded Southern, 32-15, including a 13-4 advantage on the offensive glass. Luke Asher had eight points and five rebounds for Central, which shot 56.5 percent from the field (7-of-17 three-pointers). Ricky Goatley had two points and Cam Steele finished with one point. Southern shot 52.3 percent from the field, highlighted by a 61 percent performance from long range. Tucker Nobbe had seven points for the Eagles. Derek Helton and Mason Davis had three points each, while Zach Adams had two points. Southern is set to return to action Friday against Knox Central at the Raymond Reed Classic in London. Central is set to return to action Saturday against Hazard at the Tim Short Automotive Classic in Winchester.
Mildura sale and auction results, week ending December 8Apple’s bad week has suddenly gotten worse. Just a few days after the FBI warned iPhone users to stop texting Android users , given the lack of encryption in RCS, the Bureau has now confirmed that U.S. law enforcement want access to encrypted iPhone content . And now, with perfect timing, Apple is being sued for not scanning encrypted user content for dangerous material, playing right into the FBI’s hands. The net result is that the security all iPhone, iPad and Mac users rely on to keep their content safe and secure is under attack. The risk is the forced addition of backdoors into encrypted content. And once that line is crossed, there’s no going back. This new lawsuit comes at the worst possible time. According to the filing lawyers, the class action is “on behalf of thousands of survivors of child sexual abuse for [Apple] knowingly allowing the storage of images and videos documenting their abuse on iCloud and the company’s defectively designed products. The lawsuit alleges that Apple has known about this content for years, but has refused to act to detect or remove it, despite developing advanced technology to do so.” The claims relate to Apple’s proposal to scan on-device imagery for known child sexual abuse material (CSAM) before its upload to iCloud, using hashes of known images to flag matches on phones for manual review. An unsurprising backlash followed, and Apple withdrew its proposal before it was ever released. Just a few hours before details of the lawsuit were first published in the New York Times , the FBI told me that “law enforcement supports strong, responsibly managed encryption. This encryption should be designed to protect people’s privacy and also managed so U.S. tech companies can provide readable content in response to a lawful court order.” The stories are different but the point is the same. U.S. law enforcement wants to force U.S. big tech to police the content on its platforms. The lawsuit claims that “the images and videos of the plaintiffs’ childhood sexual abuse, which have been stored thousands of times, would have been identified and removed had Apple implemented its 2021 “CSAM Detection” technology.” As I commented at that time, the issue is not scanning for CSAM, the issue is introducing screening of any content on one side of Apple’s end-to-end encryption . Right now, Apple can tell China, Russia and others that it does not have the technology to monitor for political dissent or religious or sexual behaviors, but bring in a backdoor for CSAM and there’s no impediment to its expansion. Apple and others defend decisions such as the removal of certain apps as compliance with local laws. You can see the risks as to where this might go if Pandora’s box is opened . Realistically, the new lawsuit is just a sideshow to the real debate that will take place under the new Trump administration. During the last Trump presidency, Deputy U.S Attorney General Rod Rosenstein introduced the concept of “ responsible encryption ,” which aims to tackle ‘warrant-proof’ encryption, where tech platforms don’t hold any decryption keys, which law enforcement describes as “going dark.” As The New York Times explains, “the lawsuit is the second of its kind against Apple, but its scope and potential financial impact could force the company into a yearslong litigation process over an issue it has sought to put behind it. And it points to increasing concern that the privacy of Apple’s iCloud allows illegal material to be circulated without being as easily spotted as it would be on social media services like Facebook. For years, Apple has reported less abusive material than its peers, capturing and reporting a small fraction of what is caught by Google and Facebook. It has defended its practice by saying it is protecting user privacy, but child safety groups have criticized it for not doing more to stop the spread of that material.” Now the FBI has reopened the debate into “responsibly managed encryption,” under the guise of Salt Typhoon hacking U.S. telco networks and the consequent warnings for American citizens to use encrypted messaging and calls where they can. The lawsuit makes the same point in a different way, but at the same time. And there’s a third leg to this stool—Europe. EU regulators and lawmakers are still fighting amongst themselves over the proposal to resolve this problem differently. Again, taking CSAM as its starting point, the EU proposal is to introduce “chat control,” essentially making tech platforms responsible for the illegality of the content they transmit, forcing them to monitor content without actually participating in the monitoring itself. Users would need to agree to such content screening to install and use end-to-end encrypted platforms. This does not yet have the votes and sponsorship it needs amongst EU member states to proceed, but that could change. A perfect storm could now be brewing for Apple and the 2 billion users that rely on its market-leading end-to-end encryption across much of its ecosystem to secure their data—even Apple, Apple says, cannot access their data under any circumstances. But if the new Trump administration wants to push the FBI point, that “U.S. tech companies can provide readable content in response to a lawful court order,” and if Europe does the same, and if there’s a sensitive lawsuit exposing the risks in such encryption running in the background, then 2025 could prove difficult. For all those Apple’s users this is a huge risk. Any breaks in the end-to-end encrypted enclave change it completely. If you’re an Apple user, you need to take this seriously. Meanwhile, I have approached Apple for any comments on the lawsuit.

Micah was Australia's No.1 at the Tokyo Olympics in 2022 before a serious concussion kept her out of the 2023 World Cup and presented Arnold with an opportunity. It is a chance the 30-year-old took with both hands as Arnold , famously helping the Matildas win a dramatic penalty shootout against France in the quarter-final. But Micah is getting her career back on track, and as Australia's No.1 after standing out in recent games at international and club level. The 27-year-old started in place of Arnold in the 2-1 loss to Brazil earlier this month but made four cracking saves to deny the visitors. She returned to her club side Liverpool - where she has established herself as the club's first-choice keeper - ahead of Australia's games against football minnows Taiwan. It meant Arnold got her chance to prove herself once again. But she was caught badly out of position in the first match, which saw Taiwan net an unlikely goal before having little to do in the second game. And Arnold knows she needs to fight hard to hang onto her spot in the side for the upcoming She Believes Cup in the US in February and then the Asian Cup in 2026. “I think having what we would call a down year, a lot of players could take that as a chance to switch off,” Arnold this week. “But I think heading into the Asian Cup, it's going to be a massive thing for us to get a result out of that considering what happened at the Olympics. I’ve always said, ever since I got the starting spot, that I’ll just take each game as it comes. “I’ll never be complacent, I’ll always keep fighting for that spot. You are only as good as your last game, I know that. I just have to keep trying to perform and hopefully keep my spot.” But many Matildas fans have seen enough and want to see Micah reinstated as the Australian No.1 after she shone against Brazil. teagan micah needs to be the number one keeper again. she was brilliant, even after being kept out of the starting 11 for so long. — brooke (@cezhues) i think it’s underestimated how much we need teagan micah to stay fit when the asian cup comes around (and the WWC/olympics after that), she is 100% our best goalkeeper — jamie (@vandedonkfc) Micah is a lot better the Arnold — BBLPERRY (@BBLPERRY) Teagan Micah pulled off some great saves shes miles better than Arnold — Lucas (@BunnysKeating) Micah is keen to make the No.1 spot her own again and is going about things the right way, with standout performances for the Matildas and her club side Liverpool. "One thing I have learned over the course of my years in the Matildas is that the No.1 is never really set. It is always about the most recent performances," Micah said earlier this month. "I feel like I'm training really well and feeling good at my club in Liverpool so that helps as well." While the uncertainty around Tom Sermanni's future as Matildas coach means the goalkeeper will likely have a chance to impress a new manager, with Football Australia set to name a permanent replacement for Tony Gustavsson before the end of the year. "I think it is a fresh leg (up)," Micah said. "A lot of people haven't played in our team for a long time so it is good to see a lot more rotation and players stepping up." But even if Sermanni is made permanent, it may work in Micah's favour, with the interim coach impressed with her performances. "They (Micah and Arnold) are two very good goalkeepers playing in the two top leagues in the world and at two very good clubs," he said. "There is obviously competition there and we have young Chloe (Lincoln) coming through as well. That's a positive thing for us."

Philippine enterprises’ growth slowed in Q3Alexandra Hospital (AH) on Dec 3 launched a book titled Humanity: Behind Every Face. Partial proceeds from the book sales will go towards helping AH's needy patients. SINGAPORE – A stranger at his father’s wake taught Dr Khoo See Meng, chairman of the medical board at Alexandra Hospital (AH), a valuable life lesson. This stranger was the first to arrive and the last to leave on each night during the five-day wake in Muar, Malaysia, in 2012. Gripped by their loss, the family did not inquire about the man’s relationship with the late Mr Khoo Chee Pheng. A month later, Dr Khoo’s brother discovered that the man ran a newspaper stall. Their father – who was in his 70s when he died – had bought copies of newspapers, such as Sin Chew Daily and China Press, from the man daily to help sustain his struggling business. Dr Khoo, 55, said: “My family had a subscription for Sin Chew Daily, so the house would end up with two copies of the same paper every day, which got my mum really upset, and my brother puzzled.” This is one of the personal stories told by 50 individuals from AH in a 128-page book titled Humanity: Behind Every Face, which was launched on Dec 3. Partial proceeds from the book sales will go towards helping the hospital’s needy patients. The book was the brainchild of AH deputy chief executive officer Margaret Lee, who wanted it to be a testament to why healthcare workers care, day after day, despite their personal trials and struggles. “The title ‘Humanity’ was chosen thoughtfully to encapsulate both the compassion and excellence we strive for in healthcare and the deeper, universal truth that connects us all,” said Ms Lee. In the foreword, Health Minister Ong Ye Kung wrote that the book is a timely reminder to acknowledge and recognise healthcare workers. “In healthcare, the focus is often on clinical outcomes, and it is also easy to overlook the human element that is at the heart of this noble profession,” he noted. After the idea for the book was conceived in April 2023, communications manager Yvonne Lee and intern Chloe Tan spent many hours over six months interviewing the individuals, including healthcare staff and contract cleaners. Ms Lee, 38, said: “When some of them shared about their life-changing experiences, we got emotional and cried together.” Ms Tan, 20, a communications undergraduate at Nanyang Technological University, said: “They have spoken about parenthood, health scares, losing loved ones... and much more. I hope there is something in here – even just a line or two – for everyone to resonate with.” Among those featured in the book was corporate planning manager Ashley Nguyen, 39, who battled thyroid cancer twice, in 2015 and 2021. Now in remission, Ms Nguyen said: “My work involves meeting some foreign patients, many of whom have cancer. I often share with them about my own experience and assure them that cancer is not ‘the end’.” Senior project specialist Serene Poh, 65, had a golf ball-sized brain tumour in 2000 and underwent a 12-hour operation that carried risks of paralysis, coma or even death. At the time, her husband was overseas for work, and their daughter was just four years old. As she was wheeled out from the recovery bay, she felt a burning pain from her wound each time the bed crossed a little bump on the floor. “I finally understood the perspective of a patient after I became one myself,” she said. “Now that I’m given a second chance in life, I am more patient-centric.” Ms Aishah Elshukrin, a senior social work coordinator, also found inspiration in her own struggles to give back in meaningful ways. The 27-year-old started working as a part-time banquet staff member at age 16 to provide for her family after her mother was diagnosed with cancer. It was during this time that she saw how the medical social workers assisted her family. Ms Aishah is currently studying for a degree in social work at the Singapore University of Social Sciences to achieve her goal of becoming a medical social worker. “When I counsel a patient or their loved ones at the hospital, I know exactly how they feel,” she said. The book also features Mr Kesavan, an associate executive of ALPS Healthcare, which is AH’s procurement service provider. He lost his 19-year-old girlfriend in a road accident when he was 22 years old. He went into a state of shock, followed by two years of isolation during which he stayed home all day. He was eventually coaxed out of despair by his family and friends. Now that the 33-year-old knows there is no guaranteed tomorrow, he believes there is no downside to being humble and nice. “I have become stronger and more loving, and I always look out for my colleagues now,” said Mr Kesavan, who goes by one name. The 18-month project was done entirely in-house except for the printing and distribution. One of the challenges for senior assistant communications manager Sheereen Yeo was getting her colleagues to pose naturally for the camera. She overcame this by getting them to retell their stories while their photographs were being taken around the hospital. ST PHOTO: LIM YAOHUI Ms Yeo, 34, who shot all the photos, said: “These are the colleagues you pass by every day, and you don’t really know what they are going through. I have learnt to be kinder to the people I see daily.” Added Dr Khoo: “This silent story that my family uncovered about my father... reminds me of the importance of taking an interest in the lives of seemingly random strangers. (It) stirred some of the deepest questions about the meaning of a man’s everyday engagement with the world.” Humanity: Behind Every Face is on sale at $29.90 at major bookstores, including Book Bar and Kinokuniya, and online stores such as Book Bar ( https://bookbar.sg/store/p/humanity ) and Amazon.
