The two-row Audi Q8 (and the SQ8 tested here) are not the biggest model in Audi's stable. That honor goes strangely to the lower-numbered, three-row Q7, which is longer, wider and has more cargo space. That said, it's one of the handsomest Audi sells. It's also one of the most technologically advanced, and expensive when options are added on. The Q8 competes with the lower-roofed versions of luxury SUVs like the BMW X6 (almost exactly the same size) and the Mercedes GLE Coupe. All can be optioned well into the six-figure range. What we tested: Newsweek test drove a 2024 Audi SQ8 in Rotor Grey for this review. The two-row SUV has a starting price of $96,600 with a $1,195 destination charge added on. With the Prestige Package and other options this 2024 Audi SQ8 had an as-tested price of $123,990. It's hard not to start with the engine here. The base Q8 features a six-cylinder engine making 335 horsepower but the SQ8 goes further with a 4.0-liter turbocharged V8 delivering a nice round 500 hp and 568 lb-ft of torque. In practice that means the 2024 Audi SQ8 shoots off the starting block with quattro all-wheel drive pushing all four tires. It's enough to throw you and your passengers back in their seats from a stoplight. It also makes for easy passing maneuvers on the expressway when the SQ8's transmission will drop three gears and spring past any slower moving traffic. When in Comfort or Efficiency driving mode the stop/start system is aggressive, killing the engine at almost every stop. In a vehicle with a four-cylinder it's not intrusive but here it rumbles to a stop, which makes the brakes grip harder and throws the drivers head forward. The large, 12.3-inch touchscreen works with either a tap or a press. A light tap will engage whatever icon you need but most screens don't work with gloves. Most glove materials are non-conductive, meaning they can't carry the electrical charge needed to register a touch on a capacitive touchscreen. In the SQ8 the screen can also be physically pressed, and it comes with a satisfying click noting that a button has been hit. In the winter in the north it's always a pain to remove the gloves when using a touchscreen. In southern states it's certainly less of a problem. The 2024 Audi SQ8 is hard to complain about, even with a base price of $96,600. However, with the Prestige package, the S Sport package, the premium sound system and a few other options boxes it has an as-tested price of $123,990 including destination and handling. That is a ton of money for a two-row that can be outdone, utility-wise by a domestic SUV costing a third of the price. Mercedes engines used to sound like NASCAR motors at full tilt. They still sound great, but the smaller V8 is no match for the old German 6.3-liter. Here in the Audi, it's latest V8 sounds like an American hot rod when it's working hard, and when starting up on a cold morning. COLUMBUS, Ohio — Despite everyone counting them out, including the oddsmakers installing them as three-touchdown underdogs, Michigan players said early in the week their intention was to play loose and have fun. The Wolverines entered the 120th meeting against arch-rival Ohio State on the heels of reaching six wins and bowl eligibility, while the Buckeyes (10-1, 7-1 Big Ten) were ranked No. 2 and on a roll. This was supposed to be a mismatch. Michigan had other ideas in a 13-10 win over Ohio State on Saturday before 106,055 at Ohio Stadium, with kicker Dominic Zvada making a go-ahead 21-yard field goal with 45 seconds left. Michigan has now won four straight in the rivalry and two straight in Columbus. OSU coach Ryan Day is now 1-4 against the Wolverines. Michigan outrushed Ohio State, 175-62, in the game. The Wolverines held Ohio State’s offense, which was averaging 439.1 yards, to 252 yards. The Buckeyes were ranked No. 10 nationally in scoring, averaging 37.8 points. Even without starting tight end and leading receiver Colston Loveland and cornerback Will Johnson, both out due to injuries, and with running back Donovan Edwards out for the second half because of an injury, the Wolverines found a way, mostly because of strong defensive play, some miscues by Ohio State — including an interception and two missed field goals — and a tough performance from running back Kalel Mullings. Mullings keyed the game-winning drive that started with 6:13 left and the game tied, 10-10. Mullings had a 27-yard run on third down to the Ohio State 17 and appeared to cramp briefly. But he returned to the game and converted another third down with a 5-yard run. Zvada made two field goals in the game, including what would be the game-winner to culminate the drive. Early in the fourth quarter, Michigan put together an impressive 77-yard, 15-play drive and on first down at the Ohio State 3-yard line, Warren was intercepted at the goal line by Jack Sawyer. He missed wide-open tight end Hogan Hansen. Ohio State, however, was held to a three-and-out. With the game tied to open the second half, Michigan forced Ohio State to stall on its first possession, but the Wolverines went three-and-out. On the Buckeyes’ next series, Howard, on third-and-7, was intercepted for the second time in the game, this time by Makari Paige. Paige had briefly knocked Howard out of the game in the first half and had a key third-down pass breakup. Michigan turned around and on third down, Warren was picked off by Caleb Downs. But Ohio State could not convert that turnover into points, as the Buckeyes missed on a 34-yard field goal, their second miss of the game. Despite the Buckeyes outgaining Michigan, 87-20, in the third quarter and dominating the clock with 10:28 while also recording five first downs to one, neither team scored. Michigan and Ohio State were tied, 10-10, at halftime, the Wolverines’ points coming off an interception of Howard that set up a short touchdown, and strong field position after Michigan’s defense forced a three-and-out and OSU’s 31-yard punt gave Michigan the ball at the Ohio State 39-yard line. Ohio State outgained Michigan, 155-113, and was 11-to-4 on first downs in the first half but was held to 36 rushing yards. Michigan had 82 rushing yards, including 42 on 13 carries by Mullings. Howard, who left the game briefly early in the second quarter after taking a hit from Paige, was 12 of 18 for 119 yards and had a touchdown and interception, and Warren was 6 of 8 for 31 yards. The Wolverines, trailing 3-0, decided to go for it on fourth-and-1 on the first play of the second quarter but Mullings was stuffed by Caleb Downs, giving Ohio State the ball at its 3-yard line. On third-and-9, Howard threw his seventh interception of the season, when Aamir Hall got his second pick in the last two games. Mullings gave the Wolverines a 7-3 lead on a 1-yard touchdown run. Ohio State missed a chance to pull within a point when Jayden Fielding missed wide left on a 38-yard field goal attempt. Zvada gave Michigan a 10-3 lead with 2:15 left on a 54-yard field goal, his seventh 50-plus field goal in seven attempts. A team of researchers from Peking University, Kuaishou Technology, and Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications have made major strides in the field of AI video generation. They have developed a new model, Pyramid Flow, capable of generating high-resolution virtual video imagery at 768p. Unlike many proprietary AI models developed in recent years, the creators of Pyramid Flow have made their model open source, giving developers and users free access to the underlying technology. A breakthrough in AI video generation? The Pyramid Flow model takes a different approach from many of its predecessors by generating videos in multiple low-resolution stages before producing a high-resolution final output. This method reduces the computing power needed to run the model, making it more cost-effective for users. The team claims that the model can produce a five-second video clip at 384p resolution in just 56 seconds. Pyramid Flow is also available as with the developers making the model freely accessible under the MIT License, which means anyone can download, modify, and use the code for personal or commercial purposes. Along with the model itself, the researchers have posted several sample videos demonstrating the quality of Pyramid Flow’s output. The results show highly realistic, detailed imagery, including examples such as underwater explosions creating bubbles and splashing water. Furthermore, the datasets used to train Pyramid Flow, which consist of about 10 million short videos, are also available to the public. The use of open-source datasets in AI video generation has been a contentious issue, with some critics claiming that such practices violate the rights of copyright holders. The research team behind Pyramid Flow has not specifically addressed these concerns, but they do suggest that the model could be a useful tool for fine-tuning open-source material, potentially reducing the need to rely on third-party sources. The suit, dubbed WalkON Suit F1, was developed by the Exoskeleton Laboratory team at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST). The researchers have built several iterations of the wearable robot exoskeleton previously, but the latest model comes with a frontal-docking mechanism. It can also walk and approach the user, which has earned it the moniker of the “Iron Man” suit. KAIST's Exoskeleton Laboratory Unveils WalkON Suit F1 In a newsroom post , the researchers unveiled the new exoskeleton robotic suit and highlighted that it was specifically designed for people with paraplegia (paralysis of the legs and lower body) to help them walk again. The team stated that the robotic suit can walk to the user and be worn while sitting in a wheelchair, making it accessible without requiring help from others. Developed in collaboration with Angel Robotics, the robot can assist people with the American Spinal Injury Association's (ASIA) impairment scale of A-grade (complete paralysis) injury, which is the most severe level of paraplegia. It is designed as a walking assistant, and it's not meant to be used for rehabilitation therapy or improving muscle strength. The WalkON Suit F1 project was led by Professor Kyoungchul Kong (the CEO and founder of Angel Robotics) of the KAIST Department of Mechanical Engineering. The current model follows the WalkON Suit 1, announced in 2016, and the WalkON Suit 4, which arrived in 2020. The latest iteration solves several issues of its predecessors. Specifically, it addresses the issue of users needing help from others to wear the robot. This is because the earlier models had a rear-sitting mechanism. The WalkON Suit F1 instead has a frontal docking system that can be worn while sitting in a wheelchair. Additionally, the suit can walk like a humanoid robot and approach the user, eliminating the need for someone to bring the exoskeleton suit. The robot also actively controls the centre of its weight against gravity to maintain balance even when the user pushes the robot. The design of the wearable robot was created by Professor Hyunjoon Park of the Department of Industrial Design at KAIST. With this, users can walk at a speed of 3.2kmph. Users can also keep both their hands free while walking, which was not possible in older versions. Further, the team claims that the robot has the ability to pass through obstacles such as narrow passages, doors, and stairs. Notably, the robot is built with aluminium and titanium and weighs 50kg. This crackdown is part of a two-month drive ordered by the Delhi Lieutenant Governor’s Secretariat to identify and take strict action against illegal Bangladeshi immigrants in the capital. The Chief Secretary and Police Commissioner were tasked with executing this directive. The modus operandi The gang’s operation involved creating fake Aadhaar cards , voter IDs, and other documents. They also facilitated illegal immigration by guiding immigrants through jungle routes and express train networks from Bangladesh to Delhi. Once in Delhi, these immigrants were provided with forged identification, temporary SIM cards, and travel expenses. The investigation began during a murder probe in the Sangam Vihar area. On October 21, the police were investigating the killing of Sentu Sheikh, alias Raja, when they arrested four Bangladeshi nationals who admitted to the crime. The arrested individuals were identified as Midul Miyan alias Akash Ahmed, Fardeen Ahmed alias Abhi Ahmed, and two women. They had entered India illegally and had been living in Sangam Vihar for over a year using fake Indian identification documents. During questioning, they also presented their genuine Bangladeshi IDs, including chip-based NID cards and birth certificates. A well-oiled forgery network The breakthrough led the police to a gang specialising in counterfeit Indian documents for illegal immigrants. Raids at multiple locations revealed a sophisticated network of forgers. From the victim's residence, the police seized 21 Aadhaar cards, four voter ID cards, and eight PAN cards, exposing the extent of the operation. Further investigation pointed to Poonam Online Computer Center in Rohini’s Sector-5, where some of the accused had obtained fake Aadhaar cards. "The accused created a well-organised system. Illegal immigrants would enter India through jungle routes, take AC trains to Delhi, and were provided with fake Aadhaar cards and SIM cards upon arrival," a senior police officer said. The arrests have uncovered a comprehensive racket that combined document forgery with logistical support, highlighting the challenges of combating illegal immigration and the misuse of digital technology for criminal activities.
