The Great Game: The Making of Spycraft is a feature-length documentary about the titular video game Spycraft: The Great Game . That big-budget, full-motion 1996 video game featured both a former KGB major general, Oleg Kalugin, and a former CIA director, William Colby. The parallel stories of two titans of Cold War espionage, and the making of a technology-pushing game, became too fascinating to ignore. Working on this video was unlike anything else I’ve done at Polygon. When I threw out the idea to have Jamelle Bouie — of New York Times op-ed, TikTok, Unclear and Present Danger podcast fame — narrate the documentary, I never dreamed it’d actually happen. We also had outside help for narration, graphics, and all the complicated production issues that full-length documentary creation entails, and it’s a testament to the whole team that it turned out as good as it did. If you spend the time to watch, I deeply appreciate it! ‘ Guy talks About Starship Troopers for 25 minutes NOt clickbait ’ I’m a big fan of Starship Troopers . These days you can find a myriad of clothing to express your interests in more subtle ways that would only be recognizable to other fans of the IP, such as the Unown pants from Atsuko (that I think might be out of stock now??). ‘ Sonic the Hedgehog Interview 3: Into the Shadow Realm ’ My favorite video from one of my co-workers is the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 interview Pat did with Ben Schwartz. I was impressed by their improvisational chemistry. I think it’s a testament to the creative possibility for interviews and how they can be fun and interesting. It felt like watching two friends rather than a professional interview. Also, I LOVED Sonic the Hedgehog 3 . It was so good. It’s especially easy to do this on the internet, where I can overlay some text on a picture of Keanu Reeves and convince a not-insignificant number of people that he holds opinions on the topic of “fake friends.” I love it when someone puts the time and effort into thoroughly correcting the record. But once is never enough. Simone has made this video a few times now in different forms . Misinformation can be genuinely harmful, or just seriously annoying, but it is always hard to kill. It comforts me to know that each time this particular myth swells up from the roiling bogs of discourse, Simone will be there to fight the good fight. Simone de Rochefort ‘ I played Elden Ring wrong for two years ’ This is maybe not my most substantial work, but I love when I am inspired to make something because shit is just happening to me . The anecdote at the core of this video is that I spent two years brute-forcing and cheesing my way through Elden Ring , only for my boyfriend to look at my build and go “your shit’s fucked.” But also : It’s about how I was having fun anyway . But also : The response to the video has been my favorite part. I was understandably a bit apprehensive about putting out a video basically saying “lol I’m bad at video games.” But there’s a ton of people in the comments being encouraging, or sharing their stories of sucking at Elden Ring , and it made me really happy! For me, having fun isn’t synonymous with being good at something, and it looks like I’m not alone! ‘ Elden Ring does this better than anyone else ’ The thing about this video is that I was going to make it. I like making videos about how game mechanics work, and the idea was to do one about how cloth is modeled. I turned to Gwen Frey, who I had interviewed about the Bread Boy in BioShock Infinite , because she had worked on video game cloth design before. We had a great interview, and then I sat down to write the video, and it just... didn’t work. Separately, Pat had pitched a video about Elden Ring ’s costuming and how it communicated character design. This also didn’t end up going anywhere. Until . Pat needed an idea for his next video, and I needed to stop lying to my boss about how I was making a video about cloth. The solution was clear: Pat was going to make a video about cloth. And he knocked it out of the park. The great thing about Pat is that he’s incredibly skilled at observing and explaining tiny details in games. And there are so many tiny details in Elden Ring . He takes a huge topic (ALL OF THE CLOTH IN ELDEN RING ???), and makes it funny and digestible and educational. I also found another bug in WPF Windows 7 theming support. Of course I did. So let's start there. A new bug When Microsoft released .NET 9 in November, I was surprised to discover that it included a few small but important updates. Key among them was the ability to switch the app theme on the fly, a basic feature that was missing from the Windows 11 theming capabilities Microsoft had previously made available to developers during the .NET 9 pre-release development period. Until that change, you could make an app that conformed to whatever theme the user chose in Windows 11 Settings, and it would change on the fly if the user changed that theme. But there was no way to manually select a theme. For example, if the system theme is set to Dark but you (or the user) want to use the app in Light mode. Most modern Windows 11 apps support this feature. So, too, does Notepad. And I was sure that it would come to WPF at some point. In fact, I was so sure that I wrote the UI code for this interface in XAML, but left it grayed out since there was no way to change it on the fly. Here's how it looks. As I wrote in Modernizing .NETpad: .NET 9 Arrives with a Few (More) Small Improvements for WPF (Premium), Microsoft implemented this capability using a new Application.ThemeMode property in the styling API. And it's quite easy to use: I spun up a quick sample project in Visual Studio and created a button that toggled between Light, Dark, and System themes (the latter of which will be either Light or Dark, depending on what the user configures). Couldn't be easier. But when I added this code to .NETpad and tried to change the app theme, it would crash with an unhandled exception. I have multiple versions of the app, each a little different, so I tried it in three of them. But I always had the same issue. Whenever I changed the theme on-the-fly, the app crashed. Fantastic. Because I was winding down this project, I decided to not worry about it: I would add this feature early in a clean, new version of the app and then, once I had it working, I'd build it out and keep checking on this toggle to see when (or whether) it started crashing so I could hopefully isolate the problem. It's been a roller-coaster ride for Super Micro Computer's ( SMCI 11.62% ) stock this year, with a lot of big moves in both directions. After a hot start to the year, the company's shares began to slide following a short report from Hindenburg Research that accused the company of accounting manipulation. That was soon followed by the company delaying the filing of its 10-K annual report. The Wall Street Journal later reported that Supermicro was being investigated by the Department of Justice (DOJ) over potential accounting issues, addIing fuel to the fire, although the report was never confirmed by the company nor the DOJ. The stock later shot higher after the company announced that it has been shipping more than 100,000 graphic processing units (GPUs) per quarter. That rally, however, faded on news that its auditor, Ernst and Young, was resigning and that it would need to find a new auditor to file its annual report. This delay put the company at risk of its stock getting delisted from the Nasdaq Stock Market . Supermicro shares took a further hit after the company announced preliminary numbers for Q4 that came up well short of expectations. However, the stock was back to rally mode after the company announced it has found a new auditor. For the year, the stock is currently down modestly, about 7% as of this writing, although it has a tendency to make some pretty big moves in a short period of time. Against that backdrop, let's take a closer look at the company's latest news and see if investors should consider buying the stock at current levels. A new auditor arrives Supermicro shares soared over 30% after it named BDO its new auditor. Ernst and Young had earlier resigned, issuing a pretty harsh statement, saying it was "unwilling to be associated with the financial statements prepared by management" and that it has concerns about Supermicro's governance, transparency, and internal controls. The firm had only been Supermicro's auditor since March 2023 after taking over from Deloitte & Touche. Thus, getting BDO, which is one of the world's five-largest accounting firms, to take over is a big potential win for the company. In a statement, Supermicro said, "This is an important next step to bring our financial statements current, an effort we are pursuing with both diligence and urgency." In addition to announcing a new auditor, Supermicro also said that it has submitted a compliance plan with the Nasdaq in hopes to get a filing extension and remain listed of the exchange. If the company were delisted, its shares would still trade, but it would now be on the over-the-counter (OTC) market. That could lead to its removal for the S&P 500 index, which is just joined earlier this year. Is now a good time to buy Supermicro stock? Supermicro is a company that has been greatly benefiting from the artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure build out, as it helps design and assemble servers and rack systems for customers. It has found a nice niche as being one of the first companies to embrace direct liquid cooling (DLC) solutions to help keep these systems cool, which can run hot and overheat. That said, it is also in a more commoditized business, with low gross margins . The company has been having margin issues, and its latest revenue numbers were also well short of estimates. That said, its revenue still surged over 18% year over year last quarter, despite coming up short of its prior forecast. Meanwhile, from a valuation perspective, it trades a forward price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of about 9.5 times current fiscal year analyst estimates. If those numbers hold up, that is a very inexpensive valuation for a company growing as quickly as Supermicro. SMCI PE Ratio (Forward) data by YCharts . The caveat is that Supermicro currently has a lot of scrutiny around its numbers. The SEC has fined the company in the past by the SEC over its accounting, while the combination of the short report, potential DOJ investigation, and resignation of its auditor don't look good. However, this is a real business that is seeing a lot of demand, so if the company was just "smoothing over" numbers to meet forecasts, the fallout moving forward might not be that bad. I think investors can consider taking a small position in Supermicro based on its valuation and its role in the AI infrastructure build out, but this would be a speculative position only for risk-tolerant investors.

The request came as TikTok and the Biden administration filed opposing briefs to the court, in which the company argued the court should strike down a law that could ban the platform by Jan. 19 while the government emphasized its position that the statute is needed to eliminate a national security risk. “President Trump takes no position on the underlying merits of this dispute. Instead, he respectfully requests that the Court consider staying the Act’s deadline for divestment of January 19, 2025, while it considers the merits of this case,” said Trump’s amicus brief, which supported neither party in the case. The filings come ahead of oral arguments scheduled for Jan. 10 on whether the law, which requires TikTok to divest from its China-based parent company or face a ban, unlawfully restricts speech in violation of the First Amendment. Earlier this month, a panel of three federal judges on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit unanimously upheld the statute , leading TikTok to appeal the case to the Supreme Court. The brief from Trump said he opposes banning TikTok at this junction and “seeks the ability to resolve the issues at hand through political means once he takes office.”NEW DELHI: In March, Adani Group’s head of corporate finance wrote an email to one of its lenders, calling as “baseless” a media report on the group’s alleged bribery investigation in the United States. That email was also marked to top finance executive Sagar Adani. That same very week of March 11, the Adani Group had also issued a statement saying it was “not aware of any (US) investigation” against its 62-year-old billionaire chairman, Gautam Adani. But exactly a year ago, in March 2023, FBI special agents had approached Sagar Adani with a search warrant in the United States, served him a grand jury subpoena and seized his electronic devices. Gautam Adani then emailed himself photographs of each page of that search warrant and subpoena. These details, contained in a US indictment made public this week, have reignited a debate about disclosure standards at the $143 billion ports-to-energy conglomerate as prosecutors allege the Adanis made “false” and “misleading” statements to stock exchanges, the public, financial institutions and investors. Sagar Adani, his uncle Gautam, one of the world’s richest men, and six others were indicted for fraud by US prosecutors over their alleged roles in a $265 million scheme to bribe Indian officials to secure power supply deals, while, at the same time, falsely touting the company’s compliance with anti-bribery laws when raising money from US investors. Hit by Hindenburg Research’s scathing 2023 report about improper business management and use of tax havens - which Adani denied - the conglomerate since last year repeatedly said its corporate governance standards are impeccable, saying it remains “confident of our governance and disclosure standards”. The US indictment shows prosecutors have found evidence to the contrary. Gautam Adani and Sagar Adani “not only concealed the bribery scheme from financial institutions and investors in the United States and elsewhere but also caused others to make false and misleading statements regarding their awareness and knowledge,” the indictment document says. The Adani Group has said all allegations are “baseless and denied”. It did not respond to a Reuters request for comment. India’s market regulator is making preliminary checks to see if disclosures were inadequate and if they breached local market regulations, a SEBI official told Reuters. SEBI did not respond to a request for comment. “SEBI should issue a show cause notice to the Adani Group companies on the inadequate disclosures,” said Shriram Subramanian, founder of proxy advisory firm InGovern Research Services. Corporate governance at the group has been a talking point since Hindenburg alleged in 2023 that Adanis engaged in “an open and repeated violation of Indian disclosure laws”. Adani responded to Hindenburg by saying its companies have “adopted best-in-class global disclosures and standards”. The documents made public by US authorities said each year between 2021 to 2024, group firm Adani Green publicly released annual reports which included “false and misleading statements” about its anti-bribery practices. “The Adani Group can argue about the materiality of the investigations, but as the US indictment reports note, the disclosures in the annual reports were against the established norms of good corporate governance,” InGovern’s Subramanian added.
