THE DALLES — At this time of the year, every team feels confident and has a good outlook about the upcoming basketball season. For The Dalles High Riverhawks girls squad, they’re hoping for one of their best seasons in the past 10 years. The Riverhawks, guided by fourth-year Coach Darcy Hodges, have an experienced squad led by seniors Sydney Newby, Laci Hoylman and Yadhira Cruz Torres. Hodges said: “We have everyone returning from last year, so hopefully that helps us out a little bit and provides us with a stronger team with lots of experience, and we also have some younger kids who can step up and help more as well.” Last season, Newby (first team) and Hoylman (second team) earned 4A Tri-Valley Conference (TVC) all- league awards. Juniors Hailey Johnston and Jackie Begay both earned honorable mention awards. The Riverhawks have all 10 of their varsity players returning from last year’s 9-14 squad, 6-4 in the six-team TVC standings. “The girls have put a lot of work in during the offseason to become physically stronger,” said Hodges. “We have a lot of talent on the team, and it will be interesting to see how things play out. It’s nice to not have to rebuild, and so we get to continue what we started last year.” In the last two years, the Riverhawks qualified for an Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA) play-in round road matchup, losing a season ago, 47-36, at Stayton. The Riverhawks are focusing on advancing to the state playoffs for the first time since 2015. To do so, they’ll have to contend with defending champion Madras, which lost seven seniors from its 2023-24 team. Crook County was second in the TVC, and it lost three seniors to graduation. Alexandra Sedlak shared the PSA, urging people to be careful - or to even wear goggles if you sleep around pets at nights. 'You're gonna want to hear this,' the cat-owner warned. 'If you have any interest in your health or saving your eyeballs.' Alexandra assured viewers the scary infection didn't come from the cat's claws - but when her car sneezed, retelling the story to TikTok. The content creator explained she was falling sleep on her couch on Christmas a few years ago, when her cat came up to her and touched her nose with hers. 'It's really sweet and she's like getting sleepy and she's doing the like slow blink, looking into my eyes, and I'm feeling so much love for her,' she recalled. (AP) — An online spat between factions of Donald Trump’s supporters over immigration and the tech industry has thrown internal divisions in his political movement into public display, previewing the fissures and contradictory views his coalition could bring to the White House. The rift laid bare the tensions between the newest flank of Trump’s movement — wealthy members of the tech world including billionaire Elon Musk and fellow entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy and their call for more highly skilled workers in their industry — and people in Trump’s Make America Great Again base who championed his hardline immigration policies. The debate touched off this week when Laura Loomer , a right-wing provocateur with a history of racist and conspiratorial comments, criticized Trump’s selection of Sriram Krishnan as an adviser on artificial intelligence policy in his coming administration. Krishnan favors the ability to bring more skilled immigrants into the U.S. Loomer declared the stance to be “not America First policy” and said the tech executives who have aligned themselves with Trump were doing so to enrich themselves. Much of the debate played out on the social media network X, which Musk owns. Loomer’s comments sparked a back-and-forth with venture capitalist and former PayPal executive David Sacks , whom Trump has tapped to be the “White House A.I. & Crypto Czar.” Musk and Ramaswamy, whom Trump has tasked with finding ways to cut the federal government , weighed in, defending the tech industry’s need to bring in foreign workers. OTTAWA — NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh says his party will not support a Liberal plan to give Canadians a GST holiday and $250 unless the government expands eligibility for the cheques, saying the rebate leaves out "the most vulnerable." The Liberals announced a plan last week to cut the federal sales tax on a raft of items like toys and restaurant meals for two months, and to give $250 to more than 18.7 million Canadians in the spring. Speaking after a Canadian Labour Congress event in Ottawa, Singh says he's open to passing the GST legislation, but the rebate needs to include seniors, students, people who are on disability benefits and those who were not able to work last year. Singh says he initially supported the idea because he thought the rebate cheques would go to anyone who earned under $150,000 last year. But the so-called working Canadians rebate will be sent to those who had an income, leaving out people Singh says need the help. The government intends to include the measures in the fall economic statement, which has not yet been introduced in the House of Commons. The proposed GST holiday would begin in mid-December, lasting for two months. It would remove the GST on prepared foods at grocery stores, some alcoholic drinks, children's clothes and toys, Christmas trees, restaurant meals, books, video games and physical newspapers. A privilege debate has held up all government business in the House since late September, with the Conservatives pledging to continue a filibuster until the government hands over unredacted documents related to misspending at a green technology fund. The NDP said last week they had agreed to pause the privilege debate in order to pass the legislation to usher in the GST holiday. Singh said Tuesday that unless there are changes to the proposed legislation, he will not support pausing the debate.
