KUWAIT CITY, Nov 26: The Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy has reported an 18 percent spending rate on its projects during the first six months of the current fiscal year, relative to the total estimated budget for purchasing non-current assets for these projects, say sources who criticized this decline. Sources pointed out that the allocated budget for this item is KD565.354 million and only KD105.226 million of which has been spent, leaving a balance of KD415.816 million. Sources have raised concerns about the discrepancy between the ministry’s low spending rate and its commitment to launching 21 vital projects included in its development plan for the current fiscal year. Despite this commitment, only a few of these projects have been initiated or completed during the designated period, sources revealed. Sources stated that one key project that remains delayed is the Nuwaiseeb power generation station, which is expected to produce 3,600 megawatts in its first phase. The station has not been launched yet, despite the urgent need for additional electricity generation to avoid power outages or the need to purchase energy from the Gulf Interconnection Network, as it occurred during the summer months of this year. On the other hand, the ministry has encouraged citizens to adopt modern energy-efficient air conditioning systems that operate with Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) technology, which can reduce energy consumption by up to 30 percent. It also urged homeowners to ensure their properties are properly insulated, which would help save electricity and reduce the load on the electrical grid. Initiative This initiative was part of the ministry’s participation in the 13th Industries and Construction Exhibition, being held at the Jumeirah Beach Hotel from Nov 25-28. Dalal Al-Otaibi, Senior Mechanical Specialist in the Ministry’s Electrical Extensions Department, explained that the ministry’s participation aims to raise awareness about energy-saving air conditioning systems and the benefits of building insulation. In a press statement Monday, Al- Otaibi confirmed that VRF systems offer year-round energy savings, as they operate according to specific needs and can be individually controlled by room. “In contrast, older air conditioning systems consume more energy and put added strain on the national grid,” she stated. While there have been proposals to encourage the adoption of such energy- saving technologies, Al-Otaibi emphasized that these measures have not yet been implemented. “The ministry continues to push for wider adoption of these systems to both reduce consumer energy costs and alleviate pressure on the electrical grid,” she added. Meanwhile, the Public Authority for Housing Welfare has announced the completion of electricity supply to all 116 public buildings across the residential suburbs N6 to N11 in Al-Mutla’a Residential City, with the Fire Department building being the last to be connected, reports Al-Seyassah daily. Rashid Al-Anzi, PAHW Acting Director General, confirmed that 113 buildings had already been handed over to the beneficiaries and coordination is underway to deliver the remaining building. These public buildings, including schools, mosques, police stations, citizen service centers and health facilities, provide essential services to citizens. Al-Anzi also revealed that the second phase of public building construction in Al-Mutla’a has started, with work underway in 68 buildings. Work on operating the lighting network for remaining roads in other suburbs, including N5 and N12, is ongoing, with cooperation from the Ministry of Electricity and Water to ensure the completion of services for the public. Former Minister and champion of women's rights, Gemma Hussey, has passed away at the age of 86 after a short illness. She was surrounded by her loving family in the care of Gascoigne House Nursing Home. A trailblazer in Irish politics, Ms Hussey made her mark as a Fine Gael TD when she entered the political arena in 1981 and became the first female Minister for Education the following year. She also held the Social Welfare and Labour portfolios and was the government leader in the Seanad. Notably, as Education Minister, she was responsible for introducing aural and oral exams. After stepping back from politics in 1989, Ms Hussey played an active role in the European Women's Federation. Her family described her as "a very proud Europhile" who inspired women in former Eastern-block countries to engage in politics for the first time. They expressed deep pride in her lifelong service that contributed to a better Ireland and a better Europe. Predeceased by her husband Derry, Ms Hussey's legacy lives on through her children Rachel, Ruth, and Andrew, her seven grandchildren, her brother Paddy, and a wide circle of treasured friends, reports the Irish Mirror . Minister for Education, Norma Foley paid tribute to Ms Hussey in a statement this evening. She said: "She was a courageous and determined politician who showed the way for women at the highest level in politics. She was highly regarded for the work she did in steering and guiding the development of the Irish education system. "She helped not only Irish women, but women across Europe as well. My deepest sympathies to her family, her friends, her colleagues in the Fine Gael party, and especially her children Rachel, Ruth and Andrew." He credited the program for bringing “critical” foreign-born, highly skilled workers to the United States—individuals who he said have played pivotal roles. “Take a big step back and [expletive],” Musk continued. “I will go to war on this issue the likes of which you cannot possibly comprehend.” Musk’s defense of the H-1B program comes as debates over immigration policy and workforce competitiveness intensify, with critics arguing the program undermines domestic job opportunities and proponents emphasizing its role in driving innovation and economic growth. During his first term, President Donald Trump imposed restrictions on foreign worker visas and expressed criticism of the program. However, his 2024 campaign signaled a potential shift, indicating a willingness to grant H-1B visas, or even green cards, to foreign-born workers who graduate from U.S. universities. In recent days, Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy, who are set to jointly lead Trump’s new Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), have both ramped up their advocacy of American companies using H-1B visas to hire workers. “Trump’s election hopefully marks the beginning of a new golden era in America, but only if our culture fully wakes up,” Ramaswamy wrote on X. “A culture that once again prioritizes achievement over normalcy; excellence over mediocrity; nerdiness over conformity; hard work over laziness.” Musk’s and Ramaswamy’s views have sparked resistance both from factions within Trump’s political base and from conservatives more broadly. Former U.N. ambassador and presidential candidate Nikki Haley weighed in, criticizing Ramaswamy’s comments and urging Trump to prioritize American workers over foreign-born talent. Mark Krikorian, executive director of the Center for Immigration Studies, suggested there is common ground between tech industry leaders and immigration restrictionists regarding the H-1B visa program. “Increasing the share of new immigrants selected based on their skills—described as a ’merit-based' system—has long been a goal of President Trump,” Kirkorian wrote, adding that an “obvious win-win” would be to eliminate the visa lottery and what he described as “chain-migration” categories and reallocate roughly half of those visas to skilled categories. “This would result in both an increase in the number and share of new immigrants chosen for their skills and a reduction in the overall level of immigration,” he argued. The bill, which did not receive a vote in the Senate, aimed to cut levels of legal immigration to the United States by 50 percent, eliminating the current demand-driven model with a merit-based points system that gives points for factors such as education level, existing job offer, or extraordinary achievement such as a Nobel Prize. Canada and Australia use similar merit-based systems. Other legislative initiatives similar to RAISE have failed to advance.LANDOVER, Md. (AP) — The ball bounced through KaVonte Turpin’s legs and stopped at the 1-yard line. He picked it up, made a spin move and was off to the races. Turpin’s 99-yard kickoff return touchdown was the highlight of the Dallas Cowboys’ 34-26 win at Washington on Sunday that ended their losing streak at five. That came with just under three minutes left, and then Juanyeh Thomas returned an onside kick for a TD to provide a little happiness in the middle of a lost season. “Feels good to win,” coach Mike McCarthy said. “It’s been a minute.” Chauncey Golston ripping the ball out of Brian Robinson Jr.’s hands for what counted as an interception of Commanders rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels and Donovan Wilson forcing a fumble of John Bates earlier in the game helped put the Cowboys in position to make it a game, as did the play of Cooper Rush. Turpin’s monster return after initially muffing the retrieval had everyone buzzing. “He did that for timing,” McCarthy said. “That was part of the plan. He’s a special young man. Obviously a huge play for us.” Commanders safety Jeremy Reaves, the All-Pro special teams selection two seasons ago, was the first one down the field and blamed himself for not tackling Turpin when he had the chance. “I’ve made that play 100 times,” Reaves said. “I didn’t make it today, and it cost us the game.” Turpin’s spin move will likely be replayed over and over — and not stopped by many. Receiver CeeDee Lamb called it “his escape move” because Turpin has been showing it off in practice. “I know I can just get them going one way and then spin back the other way,” Turpin said. “That’s just one of my moves when I’m in trouble and I’ve got nowhere to go: something nobody ever seen before.” In a wacky finish that McCarthy likened to a game of Yahtzee, Thomas’ return was almost as unexpected. It came with 14 seconds left after Washington kicker Austin Seibert missed the extra point following Daniels’ 86-yard touchdown pass to Terry McLaurin to leave Dallas up 27-26. Winnipeg Jets Game Days On Winnipeg Jets game days, hockey writers Mike McIntyre and Ken Wiebe send news, notes and quotes from the morning skate, as well as injury updates and lineup decisions. Arrives a few hours prior to puck drop. “I kind of waited a second and I was like: ‘Should I try? Should I try?’” Thomas said. “I said, ‘I think I’m gonna score the ball,’ so just ran and I scored.” The Cowboys’ playoff odds are still incredibly long at 4-7, but with the New York Giants coming to town next for the traditional Thanksgiving Day game at Dallas, players are willing to dream after winning for the first time since Oct. 6. “Lot of games left,” said Rush, who threw two TD passes. “Pretty insane. ... I think both sides of the ball and special teams picked each other up all game. I think it was a full team effort. Finally picking each other up like we’re supposed to.” ___ AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/nfl Advertisement Advertisement

Beacon Healthcare Systems Expands Leadership Team with Addition of Ayman Mohamed as Chief Technology OfficerTHE barmy £1 trillion Neom project in Saudi Arabia has revealed its newest addition of a vast hollow skyscraper. Despite unveiling new ultra-luxurious hotels , restaurants and yacht marinas on the daily, the Neom project has been exposed for the deaths of over 21,000 workers since it began. The newly revealed luxury development plans on the coast of the Gulf of Aqaba, dubbed Zardun, is made up of four buildings and looks to provide a so-called "peaceful" retreat for guests. Despite its pledge to bring tranquillity, some visitors may think this is hard to find knowing it could have been the place where thousands of workers died under dangerous and inhumane working conditions. Zardun spans a whopping four square kilometres, set on a restored semi-desert landscape. It sports angular sections within the middle of the skyscraper which is said to draw influence from the changing natural landscape around it. read more world news Among the hollow skyscraper are three other architectural compounds which will all total 100 rooms and suites for big spenders as well as an experience centre. And for guests it will offer trekking, mountain biking, rock climbing, among various other sports and leisure. But the dark underbelly of the location imagines bloodshed and slaves. Zardun is part of Magna - one of Neom's mega regions. Most read in The Sun Other regions included in the heavily criticised project include Trojena, The Line, Sindalah and Oxagon. Despite human life not seeming to be considered, the plans say they have so-called "environmental stewardship" in mind. It is said to accommodate various habitats and make it easier to reintroduce native plants, animals and tree species to the landscape. The Saudi government's focus on the luxury market is said to be an attempt to distinguish itself from Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. But with serious allegations of missed payments, illegal working hours and a number of clear human rights violations made, the future success of the mega-project is unclear. 21,000 worker deaths have occurred in the years since the Crown Prince launched the project, shocking statistics claim. Staff have complained of feeling like "trapped slaves" and "beggars" in the country. Serious allegations of missed payments, working illegal hours and a number of clear human rights violations have all been made. The first part of Saudia Arabia's £1 trillion Neom project was complete in October - with a luxurious Red Sea resort opening its doors to the world's elite. Terrified workers and the heartbroken family members of workers who have died since moving to Saudi have revealed the horrors they've faced in recent years in ITV 's latest expose. Dubbed "Kingdom Uncovered: Inside Saudi Arabia" the documentary speaks on the deadly issues experienced firsthand for many. It goes inside the illegal practices and terrible violations many say are being committed each day under the guise of constructing some of the world's priciest building projects. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman , has been at the forefront of trying to develop the oil state into a global tourism hub. He has splashed trillions to create his Saudi Vision 2030 project which features complexes sch as the flagship NEOM which includes fantasy ideas such as The Line. Despite the luxury plans for the ambitious builds human rights groups have expressed many concerns over the massive construction plans . With fears that migrant labour will be exploited and many locals would be displaced. Saudi Arabia has also been hit with serious allegations claiming a significant number of migrants working in construction have disappeared. Emerging reports allege that as many as 100,000 migrant workers have gone missing during the construction of Neom. One worker revealed in the documentary that he is often made to work 16-hour days helping to build a high-speed train tunnel for The Line. READ MORE SUN STORIES Over just one seven-day week the worker says he can do upwards of 84 hours. Saudi law strictly states that no one should do more than 60 hours a week. BY Juliana Cruz Lima, Foreign News Reporter Saudi Arabia's NEOM project, despite its ambitious vision, has been criticized for several major blunders that have raised concerns about its feasibility, ethics, and overall execution. Here are the top five major blunders associated with the project: Forced Displacement of Indigenous Communities : One of the most significant controversies surrounding NEOM is the forced displacement of the Huwaitat tribe. This indigenous community, which has lived in the area for centuries, was forcibly removed from their ancestral lands to make way for the development of the mega-city. The Saudi government's crackdown on those who resisted, including the killing of a tribal leader, Abdul Rahim al-Howeiti, has drawn widespread condemnation from human rights organisations. This blunder not only sparked international outrage but also tainted NEOM's image as a forward-thinking, humane project. Environmental Impact and Sustainability Concerns : NEOM has been marketed as an environmentally sustainable city, but the environmental impact of such a massive development is a major concern. The project's scale—covering over 26,500 square kilometers—poses significant risks to local ecosystems, particularly in the Red Sea, which is home to rich marine biodiversity. Critics argue that the construction of artificial islands and extensive urbanisation could lead to irreversible ecological damage. The enormous water and energy demands required to maintain a green city in the desert also raise questions about the project's sustainability. Economic Viability and Cost Overruns : NEOM is one of the most expensive development projects in history. But there are serious doubts about its economic viability. Critics question whether the project can attract the necessary foreign investment and whether it will generate sufficient returns to justify the enormous expenditure. The economic risks are further compounded by potential cost overruns and delays, which are common in megaprojects of this scale. This financial gamble has led some to worry that NEOM could become a costly white elephant if it fails to meet its ambitious goals. Technological Overreach and Ethical Concerns : NEOM is envisioned as a high-tech city, heavily reliant on artificial intelligence, robotics, and extensive surveillance systems. While this technological ambition is central to NEOM's identity, it also raises significant ethical concerns. The level of surveillance planned for the city could lead to unprecedented control over residents' lives, sparking fears about privacy and civil liberties. The lack of transparency about how AI will be used, coupled with concerns about job displacement, has also led to criticism that NEOM’s technological vision may be more dystopian than utopian. Cultural and Social Disconnect : NEOM’s vision of a futuristic, liberalized society clashes sharply with Saudi Arabia's deeply conservative cultural norms. The project plans to introduce mixed-gender sports, entertainment events, and other liberal lifestyle elements that are rare in the kingdom. This cultural shift has raised concerns about a potential clash between NEOM's globalised vision and the traditional values of Saudi society. The disconnect between the project's ambitions and the broader cultural context has led to skepticism about whether NEOM can truly integrate into Saudi Arabia's social fabric without causing significant friction.
