Asia shares dip as high yields test valuationsDavid Stratton, 85 years old and going strong ish – is one of Australia’s two most iconic movie reviewers, along with Margaret Pomeranz. I spoke to him on Thursday. Fitz : Mr Stratton, thank you for playing. As you know, the rules are you have to come up with 10 superb films that are lost and lesser-known masterpieces – with the only rider being that you can’t pick films that your great on-air partner, Margaret Pomeranz, picked a fortnight ago . Your time starts ... shortly. Before we get to that though, how did you get into films in the first place? David Stratton, now 85, pictured in Wentworth Falls: “I had a friend in Sydney, and he was saying, ‘You should come as a ten pound Pom, and I can sponsor you’. And so I did.” Credit: Rhett Wyman DS : Growing up in England during the war, my parents were both otherwise occupied and my grandmother took me to all sorts of films three or four times a week. I loved the way the cinemas smelt, the moment when the lights dimmed, the curtains opened and the film began. I was just captivated by it all. And that thrill has stayed with me ever since ... Fitz : Was there a particular film back then you were just transfixed by, that stays with you? DS : There were the Bob Hope comedies, and Mickey Rooney in a series of films about Andy Hardy. And we saw some very unsuitable films. Jane Russell in The Outlaw was, I think, very unsuitable. Interestingly enough, many years later, I was actually invited to a brunch with Jane Russell in San Francisco. Fitz : Was she every bit as unsuitable as you had hoped? DS : [ Laughs. ] She was lovely. And I told her I had fallen in love with her watching The Outlaw at the age of six. Fitz : If you care, I see your Jane Russell, and raise you Jane Fonda. She was most unsuitable for me to see in a famous poster on my brother’s wall when I too was six, and I was thrilled to meet her when she was 75 and get to tell her how wonderfully unsuitable I had found her. A fabulous woman and even more impressive in person. But ... moving on. I read that you came to Australia as a 10-pound Pom? Stratton with long-time colleague and fellow movie reviewer Margaret Pomeranz. Credit: Jacky Ghossein DS : Yes, but I had no intention of staying. My family had a long-established grocery company started in the UK in the early 1800s and my father wanted me to take the business over, as he had taken it over from his father and so on. It was one of those nepotistic things, and I thought I’d never be able to do anything else. I mean, I loved films, but I thought I’d have to be a grocer, but when it came to the crunch I said, “Hang on, I’m going to take two years off before I really come into the company.” I had a friend in Sydney, and he was saying, “You should come as a 10-pound Pom, and I can sponsor you.” And so I did, but during the two-year mandatory stay in Australia, I became involved with the Sydney Film Festival, one thing led to another, and I took over as the festival director. Fitz : And you got into a little trouble with ASIO, as it turned out? DS : Yes, because of censorship. I was used to seeing films in the UK that were basically not censored, at least if they were shown at a film society or a festival, but in Australia, they definitely were. But I thought, “Well, I’m not going to stay so what does it matter?” And because I was travelling to lots of Eastern Bloc cities to gather films – including Moscow, Prague, Budapest, Warsaw, Sofia, Bucharest and so on – it turns out ASIO started a file on me. Fitz : Clearly, you were a danger to shipping. ASIO must have said, “This is a guy to watch, this might be Australia’s answer to Kim Philby, an Englishman in a sleeper cell, in touch with the Soviets and he’s about to turn on us all!” DS : Well, of course, I didn’t have any of the secrets that Philby did, and all I could tell the Soviets was about Australian films or the lack thereof at the time, but, yes, that must have been their view. Honestly, though, I think it was the same in England at the time, and MI5, like ASIO, was suspicious of people in the arts. Fitz : And you weren’t even in your most dangerous and influential position of all yet, hosting The Movie Show with Margaret Pomeranz and able to steer the entire Australian population to some of your filthy commie flicks under the guise of them being good to watch! Sophie Lowe in Rachel Ward’s Beautiful Kate. ‘A great film’, according to Stratton. DS : [ Laughs. ] Fitz : So, let’s get to your list of top 10 lost masterpieces ... DS : OK, let me just go to my computer – first, I have got to get there, though. These days I use a walking frame. My eyesight’s gone. My mobility’s gone, my hearing’s gone. Actually, I’m in a bit of a wreck. Fitz : But you sound great? DS : Yeah, hopefully that will continue, but who knows? Last Friday night I was able to go into Sydney to receive a lovely award as Cinema Pioneer of the Year, and I was able to get up to the podium and make a speech, which I didn’t think I’d be able to do a couple of weeks beforehand. But there we are ... Anyway, the first one on my list is an Australian film, Blessed , (Australia, 2009). Directed by Ana Kokkinos, this poignantly beautiful film is divided into two parts – Children and Mothers. It’s about mothers who are alienated from their children for one reason or another. It has Frances O’Connor, Miranda Otto and Deborra-Lee Furness playing three of the mothers, and they are wonderful. The whole thing is very touching, beautifully active, beautifully written, and beautifully directed. Fitz : Locked in at No.1! Next? DS : No.2 is Taking Off (US, 1971). Also about parents and their kids, this bittersweet comedy was the first film made in America by Milos Forman. Flower power, marijuana and free love have resulted in many teenagers “taking off”, leaving their bewildered parents completely at a loss to know what their kids are up to, and are completely alienated from their kids. The film centres around an audition and there are songs from Carly Simon, Kathy Bates and Ike and Tina Turner. Judy Garland and Tom Drake in Meet Me in St Louis in which Garland sings Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas. Fitz : Hang on, the great Kathy Bates, the fabulous Oscar-winning actress sings, on the same platform as Carly Simon, and Ike and Tina Turner? DS : Yes. A song about horses. Fitz : Wow. I never knew she could sing. What’s next? DS : No.3 is Advise and Consent (US, 1962). Recently, the Herald ran a piece on the best films about US politics , but amazingly they omitted this one. Otto Preminger’s drama centres on the attempt of an ailing, Joe Biden-like president ... Fitz : Standing up against evil! DS : ... if you will, wanting to nominate as secretary of state a left-wing academic played by Henry Fonda, and the determination of a right-wing Southern Democratic senator – Charles Laughton, magnificent in his last screen role – to block the nomination because he thinks that the Henry Fonda character would sell us out to the communists. It’s a dirty game, a wonderful political thriller and an edge-of-your-seat movie. Fitz : ASIO and I will watch that with deep interest to see if your slip is showing. DS : [ laughs ] Next is Night of the Hunter (US, 1955) , also with Charles Laughton, who was not only a great actor. With this, the one film he directed, he proved to also be a master behind the camera. Robert Mitchum plays a serial killer in the Depression who poses as a preacher. Shelley Winters is a rich widow who falls for his charms, and silent star Lillian Gish plays a kindly woman who fosters and protects children. Hard to believe that the film was once banned in Australia on the grounds of blasphemy. Fitz : And quite right, too! DS : [ laughs ] Beautiful Kate (Australia, 2009) is next, an Australian film directed by Rachel Ward – the first film she ever directed – and all about the lasting effect on a rural family of tragic events that happened years ago. Ben Mendelsohn gives an effortlessly fine performance as a son who returns home to his father’s outback property after hearing that he (Bryan Brown, never better) is gravely ill. The visit brings back memories of a past summer, and the alluring presence of the prodigal’s sister, Kate (Sophie Lowe). A great cast including Rachel Griffiths and Maeve Dermody. Fitz : If I can just stop you there, David. You’re a man of great authority, and you say it’s a great film, and we know they’re all great actors, so we can take you at your word. But how is it that a film like that, with such a brilliant cast, is not better known and widely celebrated? GS : Well [ spoiler alert ], it’s actually about incest between brother and sister and ... Fitz : Oh! I speak on behalf of the readership when I say, ewwwwwwww . GS : That was mentioned in a review by your colleague, Garry Maddox. The audience just dropped away, which I can understand, but it’s still a great film. Fitz : I love Garry Maddox, and I’m with him. I still say, ewwwwwwww . DS : And so to No.6, The President’s Analyst , (US, 1967). Political comedies are fairly rare, and this very clever one performed so poorly at the box office back in the day that it’s little surprise that it didn’t start a genre. James Coburn plays a Washington psychiatrist who dabbles in hypnosis. One of his patients is the president himself. What if, under hypnosis, the commander-in-chief reveals state secrets? Both the CIA and the Russian KGB are interested in the president’s analyst. DS : A Lion Returns (Australia, 2019). Turkish-born writer-director Serhat Caradee’s riveting film deals with a different kind of family reunion. In a suburb of an Australian capital city, a family whose members have migrated from the Middle East congregates. The reason for the gathering is that the elderly matriarch is very ill, but everyone is startled when one of the old lady’s sons, who has been away in an unknown location, unexpectedly returns too. Has he been radicalised by IS? One of the rare Australian films that’s really political. It’s gripping, beautifully made, and with a cast that nobody’s ever heard of because they’re all Arab-Australian. Fitz : Great. Does your list have a great Christmas film? It’s that time of year David. DS : Meet Me In St Louis (US, 1944) isn’t really a Christmas film because this story of a St Louis family spans an entire 12 months. But I adore the scene in which a ravishing Judy Garland sings the immortal H ave Yourself a Merry Little Christmas to her younger sister (Margaret O’Brien). When I was taken to see the film in 1945 at the age of six, I wept during this scene. I still weep every time I revisit this glorious Vincente Minnelli movie, and that’s probably once a year. Fitz : OK, go on ... DS : The Meyerowitz Stories (US, 2017) had a brief cinema release before streaming on Netflix. It’s the delicious story of a dysfunctional family reuniting when the patriarch, an artist played by Dustin Hoffman in one of his best performances, is about to receive an honour. Emma Thompson plays the artist’s wife and Ben Stiller is one of his two starkly different sons who lives in LA and is a success. The other is struggling, lives in New York and is played by Adam Sandler. Fitz : I am guessing Adam Sandler dreams of making excellent movies, only to make execrable schlock? DS : He’s good. They’re all very good. Witty, smart and original, this is a family movie like no other. Anyway, next up is Supernova (UK, 2020), an immensely moving drama in which Sam, played by Colin Firth, and Tusker, played by Stanley Tucci, portray a gay couple who’ve lived together happily for a very long time. But Tusker is in the advanced stages of dementia, and Sam, a concert pianist, decides to take his partner on a final road trip to say goodbye to family and friends. This is a 10-handkerchief weepie, but a wonderfully acted story of a couple facing a challenging future. Superbly directed by Harry Macqueen. Fitz : Which brings us back to you and Margaret Pomeranz, starting out, all those years ago and often challenging each other. Over all those years of doing the show, is there a stand-out moment when you vehemently disagreed? DS : Too many to remember, but the first one was The Castle (Australia, 1997) because it was the first film made by a team that worked in television, and it looked to me like a telemovie, whereas I’m very much into the visual side of cinema. And I also found the humour a little bit patronising. But I obviously completely misunderstood it, as I have watched it a few times since, and I now think it’s very funny. Fitz : To which I would say, and I know I am joined by ASIO in these remarks, “Welcome to Australia, Agent Stratton! It took you a long time to come in from out of the cold, but it’s great to have you. An elderly woman suffered injuries and had been hospitalized after four stray dogs attacked her brutally Titwala, Thane district, on Friday night. A shocking dog attack incident captured in CCTV footage went viral on social media, in which an elderly woman was lying on the road and four stray dogs attacked her. The incident took place in Titwala near a housing society late Friday night. In the video, it can be seen that four stray dogs attacked a woman one by one. Thereafter, the woman was trying to save herself by hitting the dogs, but she failed. The woman fell on the road while being attacked by the dogs. Due to serious injuries to her head, leg, and hand, she was shifted to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital; later, she was finally sent to JJ Hospital for further treatment. Dr. Deeplaxami Kamble from Govali Government Hospital said that a few people brought a woman who was suffering serious injuries from dog bites on Friday at around 3 AM. After giving her first aid, she sent her to Central Hospital. Senior Police Inspector Suresh Kadam from Titwala Police Station confirmed that the dog bite incident occurred in Titwala. BETHANY – Ronald E. Andrews, 82, of Bethany, passed away peacefully at home on Dec. 4, 2024, surrounded by the love of his family, after a valiant battle with pancreatic cancer. He was born Nov. 13, 1942, to the late Edward and Emma (Zimmer) Andrews. He was the beloved husband of Mary Anne Andrews and devoted father of Kevin, Joan and Mark Andrews. Ronald was a Vietnam era veteran, having served his country from 1961 to 1965 as a Navy corpsman. In March of 1965, he married the love of his life, Mary Anne Haas. He went on to work as a nuclear medicine technologist for many years. Ronald was involved in the establishment of the Society of Nuclear Medicine Technologists and was a past president of the Long Island chapter. Ronald and Mary Anne lived in Syosset, N.Y., for 20 years and raised their children there before moving to Bethany. Until this past June, Ronald stayed busy working at Macy’s/Bloomingdale’s distribution center in Cheshire two days a week. The Exporters earned their seventh straight win with a 63-22 victory Monday over Rosenberg Terry at E.E. "Flash" Walker Gymnasium. Brazosport is 8-2 overall through 10 games. "I think they're just having fun," Brazosport's first-year head coach Jordan Rose said. "Having fun and figuring out that defense wins." During Brazosport's winning streak, opponents average fewer than 35 points per game. On Monday, Terry made just eight field goals, half of which came in the final quarter, with Brazosport's win already secured. Terry had four made baskets through the first three quarters, including only two in the opening half. "I want them to feel like we're just relentless. Constant 32 minutes of pressure," Rose said. "Every time you feel comfortable, we're there to make you feel uncomfortable for the entire game." Brazosport's full-court, trapping man defense overwhelmed Terry from the opening tip, as every dribble and pass felt like a challenge. On Monday, Trump sent shockwaves across the nation's northern and southern borders, vowing sweeping new tariffs on Mexico, Canada , as well as China, as soon as he takes office as part of his effort to crack down on illegal immigration and drugs. In a pair of posts on his Truth Social site, Trump railed against an influx of illegal migrants, even though southern border apprehensions have been hovering near four-year lows. He said he would impose a 25% tax on all products entering the country from Canada and Mexico, and an additional 10% tariff on goods from China, as one of his first executive orders. He said the new tariffs would remain in place "until such time as Drugs, in particular Fentanyl, and all Illegal Aliens stop this Invasion of our Country!" The president-elect asserts that tariffs — basically import taxes — will create more factory jobs, shrink the federal deficit, lower food prices and allow the government to subsidize childcare. Economists are generally skeptical, considering tariffs to be a mostly inefficient way for governments to raise money. They are especially alarmed by Trump's latest proposed tariffs. Carl B. Weinberg and Rubeela Farooqi, economists with High Frequency Economics said Tuesday that energy, automobiles and food supplies will be particularly hit hard. "Imposing tariffs on trade flows into the United States without first preparing alternative sources for the goods and services affected will raise the price of imported items at once," Weinberg and Farooqi wrote. "Since many of these goods are consumer goods, households will be made poorer." High Frequency Economics believes the threats are not meant to support new trade policy and are instead a tool to elicit some changes along the borders and for imports from Canada, Mexico and China. Though Vice President Kamala Harris criticized Trump's tariff threats as unserious during her failed bid for the presidency, the Biden-Harris administration retained the taxes the Trump administration imposed on $360 billion in Chinese goods. And it imposed a 100% tariff on Chinese electric vehicles. Indeed, the United States in recent years has gradually retreated from its post-World War II role of promoting global free trade and lower tariffs. That shift has been a response to the loss of U.S. manufacturing jobs, widely attributed to unfettered trade and an increasingly aggressive China. They are typically charged as a percentage of the price a buyer pays a foreign seller. In the United States, tariffs are collected by Customs and Border Protection agents at 328 ports of entry across the country. The tariff rates range from passenger cars (2.5%) to golf shoes (6%). Tariffs can be lower for countries with which the United States has trade agreements. For example, most goods can move among the United States, Mexico and Canada tariff-free because of Trump's US-Mexico-Canada trade agreement. Trump insists that tariffs are paid for by foreign countries. In fact, its is importers — American companies — that pay tariffs, and the money goes to U.S. Treasury. Those companies, in turn, typically pass their higher costs on to their customers in the form of higher prices. That's why economists say consumers usually end up footing the bill for tariffs. Still, tariffs can hurt foreign countries by making their products pricier and harder to sell abroad. Yang Zhou, an economist at Shanghai's Fudan University, concluded in a study that Trump's tariffs on Chinese goods inflicted more than three times as much damage to the Chinese economy as they did to the U.S. economy By raising the price of imports, tariffs can protect home-grown manufacturers. They may also serve to punish foreign countries for committing unfair trade practices, like subsidizing their exporters or dumping products at unfairly low prices. Before the federal income tax was established in 1913, tariffs were a major revenue driver for the government. From 1790 to 1860, tariffs accounted for 90% of federal revenue, according to Douglas Irwin, a Dartmouth College economist who has studied the history of trade policy. Tariffs fell out of favor as global trade grew after World War II. The government needed vastly bigger revenue streams to finance its operations. In the fiscal year that ended Sept. 30, the government is expected to collect $81.4 billion in tariffs and fees. That's a trifle next to the $2.5 trillion that's expected to come from individual income taxes and the $1.7 trillion from Social Security and Medicare taxes. Still, Trump wants to enact a budget policy that resembles what was in place in the 19th century. He has argued that tariffs on farm imports could lower food prices by aiding America's farmers. In fact, tariffs on imported food products would almost certainly send grocery prices up by reducing choices for consumers and competition for American producers. Tariffs can also be used to pressure other countries on issues that may or may not be related to trade. In 2019, for example, Trump used the threat of tariffs as leverage to persuade Mexico to crack down on waves of Central American migrants crossing Mexican territory on their way to the United States. Trump even sees tariffs as a way to prevent wars. "I can do it with a phone call,'' he said at an August rally in North Carolina. If another country tries to start a war, he said he'd issue a threat: "We're going to charge you 100% tariffs. And all of a sudden, the president or prime minister or dictator or whoever the hell is running the country says to me, 'Sir, we won't go to war.' " Tariffs raise costs for companies and consumers that rely on imports. They're also likely to provoke retaliation. The European Union, for example, punched back against Trump's tariffs on steel and aluminum by taxing U.S. products, from bourbon to Harley-Davidson motorcycles. Likewise, China responded to Trump's trade war by slapping tariffs on American goods, including soybeans and pork in a calculated drive to hurt his supporters in farm country. A study by economists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of Zurich, Harvard and the World Bank concluded that Trump's tariffs failed to restore jobs to the American heartland. The tariffs "neither raised nor lowered U.S. employment'' where they were supposed to protect jobs, the study found. Despite Trump's 2018 taxes on imported steel, for example, the number of jobs at U.S. steel plants barely budged: They remained right around 140,000. By comparison, Walmart alone employs 1.6 million people in the United States. Worse, the retaliatory taxes imposed by China and other nations on U.S. goods had "negative employment impacts,'' especially for farmers, the study found. These retaliatory tariffs were only partly offset by billions in government aid that Trump doled out to farmers. The Trump tariffs also damaged companies that relied on targeted imports. If Trump's trade war fizzled as policy, though, it succeeded as politics. The study found that support for Trump and Republican congressional candidates rose in areas most exposed to the import tariffs — the industrial Midwest and manufacturing-heavy Southern states like North Carolina and Tennessee.

Eleanor Rosalynn Smith was born on August 18, 1927. Growing up in Plains, she excelled academically and was her class valedictorian, and had a strong relationship with God and her faith. Carter grew up in the Baptist church, according to Bourne's biography. Rosalynn rejected his first proposal, telling Carter she promised her father she would finish college before marriage. They continued to write each other, however, when he went back to Annapolis, and by the next February, she accepted his proposal, according to the book. They were married on July 7, 1946 in Plains. 'Jimmy was wearing his white navy summer uniform and Rosalynn wore a white-and-blue dress,' Bourne wrote. After he graduated from the Naval Academy with a bachelor's degree, Carter's Naval career started in Norfolk, Virginia where he trained enlisted men. The couple had their first child, John William Carter, known as Jack, on July 3, 1947. He then applied to the Navy's submarine program and the young family moved to New London, Connecticut. The couple would have three more children: James Earl Carter III, known as Chip, on April 12, 1950, Donnel Jeffrey, known as Jeff, born on August 18, 1952, and Amy Lynn, the youngest who was born on October 19, 1967. Americans would get to know her later as a young child in the White House. After about six years in the Navy and moving around the country depending on his deployment, Carter began working under then Captain Hyman G Rickover, who was overseeing the branch's nuclear-powered submarine program. But then Carter had 'a major existential crisis,' according to Bourne's biography. His father, 58, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He died on July 22, 1953. His mother, Lillian, wanted Carter to come back to Plains to take over the family's business, which was struggling. But Rosalynn did not want to go back. 'It precipitated the greatest crisis of their marriage,' according to the biography with Carter saying: 'She almost quit me.' Nonetheless, Carter resigned from the Navy after serving for seven years and the family moved back to Plains. By the end of the decade, Carter and Rosalynn were able to turn around the farm and business, which was called Carter's Warehouse, 'a general-purpose seed and farm supply company,' according to the biography on his presidential library website. Like many president's children, she was covered by the media during her time in the White House, including the fact that she had a cat named Misty Malarky Ying Yang. Amy was the first child to live in the White House since the Kennedys 'The Carters were, by and large, unpretentious people. Much of the pomp and circumstance that had been a feature of previous administrations was frowned upon. It was the first time in history that a president had not rode to the White House in a carriage or car Jimmy Carter was born in Plains, Georgia to a father who was a peanut farmer and businessman. Carter joined the Navy but resigned after his father, James Earl Carter Sr, died at age 58 in 1953. He went back to Plains with his family, and rebuilt the family's farm and business, which were close to ruin. Before he became president, Carter told reporters that his peanut farm and business would by handled by trustees to avoid any conflict of interest Carter also started becoming more involved in his community, and in 1955, he ran his first successful campaign: a seat on the Sumter County Board of Education. By 1962, Carter was a Georgia state senator, serving two terms. He ran for governor in 1966 but lost. After the loss, Carter 'turned increasingly for solace to his faith' and became a born-again Christian, according to Bourne's biography. In his book, A Full Life, Carter noted that it took him running for office in 1962 for some of the dynamics in his marriage to Rosalynn to change, writing that they became 'real partners.' Bourne pointed out that Rosalynn became his 'political partner,' and she chose to focus on mental health issues. 'Few were aware of what a significant role she played in their political symbiosis,' Bourne wrote. Carter tried again for governor, this time winning in 1970. While governor, Carter served both as chair for the Democratic Governor's Campaign Committee in 1972 and then the campaign chairman of the Democratic National Committee in 1974. When he announced his candidacy for president in 1974, Carter was not well-known on a national level. 'Public reaction to his candidacy revealed that exposure to his party was not enough to gain him wide recognition,' said his biographer. In fact, the leading newspaper in his home state ran a headline the day after his announcement that proclaimed, "Jimmy Who Is Running For What!?"' But the country was reeling. President Richard Nixon resigned on August 9, 1974 after three articles of impeachment, including obstruction of justice, were adopted by a House of Representatives' committee. The scandal began after the arrest of the five men who broke into the Democratic National Committee's headquarters at the Watergate complex in Washington, DC, and subsequent cover-up. Meanwhile, the war in Vietnam continued and did not end until the next year under Gerald Ford, who became president after Nixon's resignation. 'In response to the twin nightmares of Vietnam and Watergate that had shattered public confidence in government... Americans gravitated toward leaders who were outside the Washington sphere. Answering the nation's need, Carter's slogan was 'A Leader, For A Change,' and Carter portrayed himself as an outsider who could 'clean up the mess in Washington.' It worked, and Carter won the Democratic nomination, and chose Walter Mondale, a senator from Minnesota, as his running mate. Gerald Ford had represented Michigan's 5th congressional district since 1949 when then Vice President Spiro T Agnew resigned on October 10, 1973 due to a corruption scandal that was separate from Watergate. Ford then became vice president and after Nixon resigned, president. He secured the Republican presidential nomination and chose Bob Dole, a senator for Kansas, as his running mate. The election was close but Carter won. When Carter took office on January 20, 1977, he 'sought to run the country the way he had run his farm - with unassuming austerity. It was officially handed over to Panama on December 31, 1999. Panamanians had rioted over American control of the canal in 1964. The treaty was signed on September 7, 1977. When Carter took office on January 20, 1977, he 'sought to run the country the way he had run his farm - with unassuming austerity. This would be no "imperial presidency" like those of (Lyndon B) Johnson and Nixon,' Robert Strong wrote. Carter wanted to 'portray himself as a president close to the people,' and to that end, 'carried his own suit bag when he traveled,' 'ended the practice of "Hail to the Chief" played whenever he made a public appearance,' and Amy was enrolled in a public school, Bourne wrote in his biography. He wanted to balance the budget and reduce the deficit, reorganize the federal government and establish 'a long-range energy policy for the nation,' according to the biography. But he had a contentious relationship with Congress despite the fact that Democrats had majorities in both the Senate and the House. Carter tried to reduce the country's dependence on oil – there had been an earlier energy crisis in 1973 – and created the Department of Energy while enacting conservation measures. The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, known as OPEC, pushed the price of oil higher from $13 to over $34, and Strong noted in his essay that 'this huge price increase resulted in a run-up in inflation.' By Independence Day in 1979, many Americans had to wait in line to get their gas. Soon after, Carter gave his so-called 'malaise' speech, which according to NPR, was 'to address the energy crisis, unemployment, inflation and something else a bit more nebulous: 'The threat is nearly invisible in ordinary ways. It is a crisis of confidence. It is a crisis that strikes at the very heart and soul and spirit of our national will. We can see this crisis in the growing doubt about the meaning of our own lives and in the loss of a unity of purpose for our nation,' Carter said. Initially, the speech was received positively, but then several members of his cabinet left – some resigned, some were fired. 'It's from then on that Carter had a really difficult time at bouncing back and being seen on the part of the American people as a strong and significant leader - especially a leader that could take America through solving the energy crisis,' Kevin Mattson, author of What the Heck Are You Up To, Mr. President?, told NPR . After Carter lost to Ronald Reagan, he and his wife, Rosalynn, founded the Carter Center in 1982, partnering with Emory University in Atlanta. The nonprofit's mission is to 'advance peace and health worldwide,' with numerous programs and democratic initiatives. He went on a mission to Haiti, and in 2002, a trip to Cuba where he met with Fidel Castro, according to Strong. Moxley and the Death Riders are deep into a hostile takeover of AEW. It's a storyline that draws attention to the wider scope of AEW's legitimate past, present and future. "I spent about two months thinking, reading books and walking around downtown Cincinnati at three o'clock in the morning," Moxley told CBS Sports ahead of AEW Full Gear on Saturday. "I had a vision of a future that could be ours. A vision that could belong to everybody. A world where everyone can be successful. A world where everyone's strengths are brought to the forefront. A vision of a world that is inhospitable to bullshit." Moxley speaks partially in character but, as with most works of fiction, there's truth at the core of his message. The Moxley character's goals come at an interesting time in AEW's existence. The promotion looks radically different than it did five years ago. Depending on what's most important to you as a consumer, that could be for better or worse. AEW signed a lucrative new media rights deal with Warner Bros. Discovery last month, securing its future for several years. It was a major win for the company. At the same time, total viewership and ticket sales have generally declined since 2023. Some longtime faces of the promotion like Moxley have endured while an influx of new stars replace absent fan favorites. "It's only five years old. You start with two hours of TV, that's one thing. Then three, then five. Now it's a different thing," Moxley said. "If you don't have the infrastructure to support it, you fall to the level of your systems. If the branch pops out of the dirt before it's ready, it will not have the structural integrity to hold the fruit it bears. I think we've maybe gotten things out of order. "Crawl, walk, run. Maybe we went from a certain cadence of walk and tried to jump into a run and things got a little out of balance and split the differential. It's just about getting into the right gear for the speed you're attempting to drive. We're going to do that. I'm actually quite excited about it." Moxley describes the growing pains of an upstart promotion. The professional wrestling landscape was very different when AEW launched in January 2019. Fans were starving for a major alternative to WWE and AEW forced the winds of change. AEW debuted with a two-hour television show and four to five annual pay-per-views. From 2023 onwards, the company produced five hours of TV and seven to eight PPVs annually. Another recurring challenge AEW faced was keeping peace in the locker room. Multiple physical altercations have reportedly broken out behind the scenes. Moxley did not acknowledge those incidents -- none of which involved him -- but they might point to his desire to facilitate a fruitful environment in AEW. "I found it challenging to find anyone who would take responsibility for anything," Moxley said of AEW in the past. "'It's not my fault' was something I'd hear bouncing around the hallways of AEW quite ubiquitously. Essentially what it boils down to is that I'll take responsibility for everything." Things are very clear in my head. I'm still slowly, over time evolving into the person I think I'm meant to be. I think this is exactly where I'm supposed to be. "I'm very optimistic about everything... I don't think there's a more polite way to say this. I don't give a single f---. I have not one single f--- to give. That is the attitude that I'm moving forward with. That is the attitude my group has. Everything I'm trying to achieve now is very much the hill I'm prepared to die on."
