Rivian has announced the conditional approval of a loan of up to $6.6 billion for its previously delayed Georgia manufacturing facility, set to help the company fund production of its upcoming R2 SUV and R3 and R3X crossovers. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has granted Rivian conditional approval for the Georgia factory loan as part of its Advanced Technology Vehicle Manufacturing (ATVM) program, according to a press release shared by the automaker on Tuesday. The news comes after Rivian was forced to delay the Georgia plant as detailed in an announcement earlier this year, instead pivoting to have the R2 begin production at its factory in Normal, Illinois due to financial concerns and a desire to launch manufacturing of the platform sooner. Credit: State of Georgia Credit: State of Georgia Credit: Rivian Rivian says the loan includes $6 billion of principal and roughly $600 million of capitalized interest, set to help reboot the automaker’s plans to construct a production facility outside of Social Circle, Georgia, at the Stanton Springs North manufacturing hub. The company expects Phase One of the project to start producing vehicles by 2028, initially offering 200,000 units of annual production capacity and doubling that upon completion of Phase Two. The company also says the facility will create around 7,500 operations jobs through 2030, along with around 2,000 full-time jobs expected during construction. “This loan will help create thousands of new American jobs and further strengthen U.S. leadership in EV manufacturing and technology,” says RJ Scaringe, Rivian CEO and founder. “This loan would enable Rivian to more aggressively scale our U.S. manufacturing footprint for our competitively priced R2 and R3 vehicles that emphasize both capability and affordability. A robust ecosystem of U.S. companies developing and manufacturing EVs is critical for the U.S. to maintain its long-term leadership in transportation.” Rivian was initially approved to build the roughly-$5-billion factory in Georgia last November , after it first announced plans to build such a plant in 2021 . The factory has been widely expected to produce the upcoming R2 electric vehicle (EV), as well as the R3 and R3X platforms that were announced unexpectedly alongside the R2 announcement in March. Despite having already selected a construction company for the project as of last December, Rivian also announced in March that it would start producing the R2 at its existing Illinois factory, where the R1T and R1S are built, instead of waiting until the Georgia factory was complete. The company also announced plans to delay construction of the plant, instead focusing on reaching profitability, jump-starting R2 production, and hopefully gaining additional capital to support the launch of the facility. In June, Volkswagen announced plans to invest up to $5 billion into Rivian , the first $1 billion of which was reported to have been paid via a convertible note during the EV startup’s Q2 earnings call . Earlier this month, the two announced plans to further expand a joint venture that would see the R2 launch as soon as early 2026 , along with supporting additional VW models in 2027. I started looking around and considering my options, originally deciding on some SRhythm off-brand ones here on Amazon. When I came back with the money to buy, the SRhythms were sold out so it was back to browsing... Enter JBL, I realized the speaker brand that went from “a few of your buddies ride or die by this brand” to a sound-[lover] staple was IDEAL. I shopped around, looked at similar Skullcandy models, other brands similar in price but also not offering anything better than passive noise cancellation... I find the noise cancellation on these to be easily comparable to the AirPod Pros I have used before. Especially with music playing, I cannot hear a single thing outside of my little bubble. I’ve used these at work for two days straight without ever having to plug them in. They connect to my phone with ease and the buttons on the side are very useful. The audio quality is crystal clear, and I often use these in the car instead of my stereo. These things perform beautifully... All in all, I consider these to be five star worthy because it’s an excellent value for the price..." — Nicky [This review has been condensed for length. The delivery of nanomedicines using gas bubbles has shown itself to be a unique way of transporting cytotoxins to the lungs of cancer patients. The method enables precise and focused treatments, and the local action of the drugs also prevents a range of side-effects. Results from SINTEF's experiments with mice have shown that the impact of this form of medication is very great. Tumors were significantly reduced in size after only 30 days following the start of treatment. The study has recently been published in the European Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences, and the method is so promising that the research team has taken out a patent. SINTEF has also signed a licence agreement with a pharmaceutical company. We're very confident that this approach may offer us a new cure for lung cancer." Andreas Åslund, researcher and Project Manager Åslund works at SINTEF's Department of Biotechnology and Nanomedicine. From a drawback to a benefit It was in many ways something of a coincidence that this technology should end up as a lung cancer medication. Originally, the research team was working to identify a method that would deliver drugs to the brain. This is particularly difficult because the brain is enclosed in a separate membrane called the blood-brain barrier. "We envisage that this method of drug delivery can also be used to treat other lung conditions such as cystic fibrosis, infections and pulmonary emphysema. In other words, methods other than delivering drugs via the bloodstream are required in order to reach brain tumors. The researchers have addressed this problem by manufacturing gas bubbles that enclose the nanocapsules containing the drugs. The bubbles make it possible to use ultrasound to explode the nanocapsules, enabling the drugs to be 'shot' through the blood-brain barrier. So, at what scale are the researchers actually working? This is nanoscale - so small that as many as 100 nanocapsules, containing the drugs and enclosed in their gas bubbles, can sit across the width of a human hair. This being said, the drug itself constitutes only ten per cent of the package. "After a while we discovered that these gas bubbles ended up in the patients' lungs", explains Åslund. "In the first instance, an accumulation of gas bubbles here wasn't what we wanted, but the discovery meant that we could turn the problem upside down and instead exploit the phenomenon to reach tumors in the lungs", he says. Into the capillary network The reason that this medication is so well suited to treatment of the lungs is that it takes place at nanoscale. All intravenous drugs enter the bloodstream and pass through the heart before they reach the lungs, where the vessels develop into what is called the capillary network. Here, the vessels are very narrow and act as a filter for the microbubbles, which explode spontaneously and so deliver the nanoparticles containing the drugs directly into the lung tissue. Because the bubbles burst spontaneously, there is no need to use ultrasound to free the nanoparticles from their capsules in the capillary network. Many years of research The idea for this very specific form of medication emerged in the same department at SINTEF as early as in 2014. A decade of research work has led to many medicinal innovations. These include a drug delivery platform for the treatment of peritoneal cancer, which resulted in the spin-off company NaDeNo. And today, a new cure for lung cancer is on the researchers' agenda. Delivering drugs at nanoscale means that treatment is more gentle on the patient. "Nanomedicines have the benefit of acting very locally", says Åslund. "This makes it possible to treat only the diseased tissue, and also enables us to administer stronger drugs. In so doing, we don't have to worry about the drugs damaging healthy tissue. It also means that the patient will not suffer as many side-effects. It would in fact be very dangerous to administer drugs of this efficacy if the doses weren't so minute", he emphasizes. This technology makes it possible to deliver more than just cancer drugs to the lungs. "We envisage that this method of drug delivery can also be used to treat other lung conditions such as cystic fibrosis, infections and pulmonary emphysema", says Åslund. SINTEF Snipstad, S., et al . The next generation of Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi 8, is currently being developed behind closed doors. This time, the emphasis isn't on pure speed, but instead on improving the user experience. Wi-Fi 8, known right now as IEEE 802.11bn Ultra High Reliability, still remains years away. Wireless technology is in a constant state of improvement: Each progression in the evolution of Wi-Fi takes several years to discuss, approve, and then deploy. Wi-Fi 7, the "current" standard, hasn't even been formally ratified quite yet. But that's not stopping the development of Wi-Fi 8 behind the scenes, and we already know some details. MediaTek's Filogic wireless division has released some of what you can expect, with the caveat that final details won't be nailed down until the final specification is released around Sept. 2028. The key phrase that you should think of in the context of Wi-Fi 8? Not peak throughput, but effective throughput. Wi-Fi 8 will look a lot like Wi-Fi 7 According to the Wi-Fi Alliance and MediaTek, the United States isn't the driving force behind the wireless evolution. Instead, it's China: The country has 650 million broadband subscribers and more than a quarter have 1Gbps broadband connections to their homes. Overall, the average connection speed is 487.6Mbps, which grew 18 percent in a year's time. MediaTek Theoretically, 802.11bn / Wi-Fi 8 set out (Word document, via the IEEE) to provide enough wireless bandwidth to accommodate your broadband gateway supplying a few gigabits per second, and factoring in the ability of Ethernet to provide even more. EverythingRF interpreted that 2022 document, known as Project Authorization Request (PAR), as one that would provide a minimum aggregate throughput of 100Gbps. Since then, the PAR was approved in 2023, and the working group has begun hammering out more details. As of Nov. 2024, MediaTek believes that Wi-Fi 8 will look virtually identical to Wi-Fi 7 in several key areas: The maximum physical layer (PHY) rate will... Mark Hachman

WASHINGTON - Donald Trump threatened the United States’s closest neighbours with big tariffs this week, in a move that has reminded many of the unpredictable tactics the president-elect deployed during his first tenure in the White House. Trump said Monday he would use an executive order to impose 25 per cent tariffs on all goods coming from Canada and Mexico until the two countries stop drugs and migrants from illegally crossing the U.S. border. The announcement, made on Truth Social, brought swift responses from officials and industry in both countries who are bracing for chaos during Trump’s second tenure. He has long used the threat of import taxes to pressure other countries to do his bidding, saying this summer that “the most beautiful word in the dictionary is ‘tariff.’” It’s unlikely the move would violate the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement, which was negotiated during the first Trump administration. Laura Dawson, an expert on Canada-U. S. relations and the executive director of the Future Borders Coalition, said the president can impose tariffs under his national security powers. This type of duty has a time limit and can only be made permanent through Congressional approval, but for Trump, national security powers are like a “get out of jail free card,” Dawson said. “This is exactly what happened in the last Trump administration,” Dawson said. “Everyone said, ‘Well, that is ridiculous. Canada is the U.S.‘s best security partner. What do you mean our steel and aluminum imports are somehow a source of insecurity?’” But within the global trade system, she said, no country challenges another’s right to define their own national security imperatives. Trump’s first administration demonstrated how vulnerable Canada is to America’s whims when the former president scrapped the North American Free Trade Agreement. The U.S. is Canada’s closest neighbour and largest trading partner. More than 77 per cent of Canadian exports go to the U.S. Negotiation of CUSMA, commonly dubbed “the new NAFTA,” was a key test for Ottawa following Trump’s first victory. The trilateral agreement is up for review in 2026 and experts suspect this week’s tariff announcement is a negotiating tactic. Scott Bessent, Trump’s pick for treasury secretary, said in a recent op-ed that tariffs are “a useful tool for achieving the president’s foreign policy objectives.” “Whether it is getting allies to spend more on their own defence, opening foreign markets to U.S. exports, securing co-operation on ending illegal immigration and interdicting fentanyl trafficking, or deterring military aggression, tariffs can play a central role.” During the initial CUSMA negotiations in 2018, Trump floated the idea of a 25 per cent tariff on the Canadian auto sector — something that would have been crippling for the industry on both sides of the border. It was never implemented. At the time, he did use his national security powers to impose a 25 per cent tariff on steel and 10 per cent tariff on aluminum imports, casting fear of an all-out trade war that would threaten the global economy. The day after announcing those levies, Trump posted on social media “trade wars are good, and easy to win.” Former U.S. trade representative Robert Lighthizer recounted in his book that the duties sent an “unmistakable signal that business as usual was over.” “The Trump administration was willing to ruffle diplomatic feathers to advance its trade agenda.” It led to a legendary clash between Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Trump at the G7 in Quebec. Trudeau said Canada would impose retaliatory measures, saying the argument that tariffs on steel and aluminum were a matter of national security was “kind of insulting.” Trump took to social media, where, in a flurry of posts he called Trudeau “very dishonest and weak.” Canada and other countries brought their own duties against the U.S. in response. They targeted products for political, rather than economic, reasons. Canada hit yogurt with a 10 per cent duty. Most of the product impacted came from one plant in Wisconsin, the home state of then-Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan. The European Union, Mexico and Canada all targeted U.S. whiskey products with tariffs, in a clear signal to then Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and his home state of Kentucky’s bourbon industry. Ultimately, Canada and Mexico were able to negotiate exemptions. Carlo Dade, the director of trade and trade infrastructure at the Canada West Foundation, said Trump is returning to the White House with more experience and a plan. But he suspects Americans will not like the blow to their bank accounts. Trump’s new across-the-board tariff strategy would not only disrupt global supply chains, it would also cause a major shakeup to the American economy. It’s unclear if Trump will go through with them, or for how long, after campaigning on making life more affordable and increasing the energy market. “I think it will be short-term,” Dade said. “The U.S. can only inflict damage on itself for so long.” This report by The Canadian Press was first published Nov. 26, 2024. — With files from The Associated Press
Islamabad [Pakistan]: Pakistan's Information Minister Attaullah Tarar on Saturday said that the man seen in a viral video falling from a container during a Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) protest in Islamabad is "completely fine." Speaking to the media, Tarar said that the man sustained minor injuries in the incident, as reported by Dawn. The viral video, shot during a protest at Islamabad's D-Chowk, shows men, dressed as security personnel with riot gear, pushing a man off a stack of three shipping containers. The PTI supporters were demanding the release of their leader and party chief, Imran Khan . The protests turned violent on November 26, and PTI supporters were met with intense tear gas shelling by security forces. Tarar further claimed that the man was recording a TikTok video as part of a challenge with a friend and was not offering prayers at the time, as reported by Dawn. Earlier, Awami National Party (ANP) President Aimal Wali Khan called for a ban on political parties that incite violence, including PTI, Dawn reported. Speaking at a press conference alongside Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi at the ANP central secretariat in Wali Bagh on Friday, Khan said that PTI has been working in an undemocratic and nonpolitical manner since its formation and it has always encouraged people to behave in a violent manner. He labelled PTI as "waste that should be disposed of" and said that the state had imposed PTI on Khyber Pakhtunkhwa for the past 12 years but such decisions did not give good results, as reported by Dawn report. CLEVELAND (AP) — Shortly after doing a face-down snow angel, firing a few celebratory snowballs and singing “Jingle Bells” on his way to the media room, Jameis Winston ended his postgame news conference with a simple question. “Am I a Brown yet?” he asked. He is now. And who knows? Maybe for a lot longer than expected. Winston entered Cleveland football folklore on Thursday night by leading the Browns to a 24-19 win over the division rival Pittsburgh Steelers, who had their five-game winning streak stopped. Winston's performance at Huntington Bank Field, which transformed into the world's largest snow globe, not only made him an instantaneous hero in the eyes of Browns fans but added another wrinkle to the team's ever-changing, never-ending quarterback conundrum. In his fourth start since Deshaun Watson's season-ending Achilles tendon injury, Winston made enough big plays to help the Browns (3-8) get a victory that should quiet conjecture about coach Kevin Stefanski's job. Some wins mean more than others. In Cleveland, beating the Steelers is as big as it gets. But beyond any instant gratification, Winston has given the Browns more to consider as they move forward. Watson's future with Cleveland is highly uncertain since it will still be months before the team has a grip on whether he's even an option in 2025, his fourth year since signing a $230 million, fully guaranteed contract that has proven calamitous. It's also possible the Browns will cut ties with Watson. They signed Winston to a one-year contract to be Watson's backup. But the unexpected events of 2024 have changed plans and led to the possibility that the 30-year-old Winston could become Cleveland's full-time QB or a bridge to their next young one. So much is unclear. What's not is that Winston, who leaped into the end zone on fourth-and-2 for a TD to put the Browns ahead 18-6 in the fourth quarter, is a difference maker. With his larger-than-life personality and the joy he shows whether practicing or throwing three touchdown passes, he has lifted the Browns. A man of faith, he's made his teammates believe. Winston has done what Watson couldn't: made the Browns better. “A very, very authentic person,” Stefanski said Friday on a Zoom call. “He’s the same guy every single day. He's the same guy at 5 a.m. as he at 5 p.m. He brings great energy to everything he does, and I think his teammates appreciate that about him.” Winston, who is 2-2 as a starter with wins over the Steelers and Baltimore Ravens, has a knack for inspiring through fiery, preacher-like pregame speeches. But what has impressed the Browns is his ability to stay calm in the storm. “He doesn’t get rattled,” said Myles Garrett, who had three sacks against the Steelers . “He’s just tuned in and focused as anyone I’ve seen at that position. Turn the page. There was a turnover, came back to the sideline, ‘Love you. I’m sorry. We’re going to get it back.’ He was already on to the next one, ‘How can we complete the mission?’ “I have a lot of respect for him. First was from afar and now seeing it on the field in front of me, it’s a blessing to have someone who plays a game with such a passion and want-to. You can’t ask for a better teammate when they take those things to heart and they want to play for you like we’re actually brothers and that’s what we have to attain. That brotherhood.” What's working Winston has done something else Watson couldn't: move the offense. The Browns scored more than 20 points for just the second time this season, and like Joe Flacco a year ago, Winston has shown that Stefanski's system works with a quarterback patient enough to let plays develop and unafraid to take shots downfield. What needs help The conditions certainly were a factor, but the Browns were a miserable 1 of 10 on third down, a season-long trend. However, Cleveland converted all four fourth-down tries, including a fourth-and-3 pass from Winston to Jerry Jeudy with 2:36 left that helped set up Nick Chubb's go-ahead TD run. Stock up RT Jack Conklin. Garrett outplayed Steelers star T.J. Watt in their rivalry within the rivalry partly because Conklin did a nice job containing Pittsburgh's edge rusher, who was held without a sack and had one tackle for loss. Conklin has made a remarkable comeback since undergoing reconstructive knee surgery last year. Stock down Owners Dee and Jimmy Haslam. Their desire to build a dome is well intended, but an indoor game could never come close to matching the surreal setting of Thursday night, when snow swirled throughout the stadium and covered nearly all the yard lines and hash marks. “It was beautiful,” Winston said. Injuries WR Cedric Tillman is in the concussion protocol. He had two catches before taking a big hit on the final play of the third quarter. Key numbers 9 — Consecutive home wins for the Browns in Thursday night games. Three of those have come against Pittsburgh. What's next An extended break before visiting the Denver Broncos on Dec. 2.
