This week's release of the 2024 World Malaria Report by the WHO said there were 11 million more malaria cases compared to the previous year and that Ethiopia and Nigeria recorded their highest death tolls from the disease since 2015. According to Wednesday's report, there were 263 million cases of the mosquito-borne disease and nearly 600,000 deaths worldwide last year. COVID-19 and the economic imbalance in developing countries,” Ajayi said. Ajayi said climate change and declining effectiveness of anti-malaria drugs are threatening progress. Nigeria bears the world's highest burden of malaria with more than 27% of global malaria cases and 31% of deaths. But the WHO report also showed some progress — estimating that about 2.2 billion cases of malaria and 12.7 million deaths were averted globally since 2000. Ajayi said increased government funding for malaria interventions could change things. "Mosquitoes thrive very well under temperatures that are more than 19 degrees Celsius, and the climate change has made [that] possible,” Ajayi said. “Also, the plasmodium parasite has gained a lot of resistance against malaria drugs. Also, the government needs to invest more in our health sector. Government also needs to fund research that will help us in discovering indigenous drugs." The WHO report said only about half of the $8.7 billion target for malaria intervention last year was achieved. In Nigeria, spending on health care is about 4% of the national budget, much lower than the 15% agreed upon by the African Union in 2001 — in the so-called Abuja Declaration. Authorities have pledged to improve spending on health. On Thursday, Nigeria signed a deal to promote local production of test kits for HIV and malaria. Last week, Nigeria launched its malaria vaccination campaign — becoming the latest African country to provide malaria vaccines to young children. There are now 17 countries giving new malaria vaccines.

It’s a testament to the energy and drive of Elon Musk that he’s now a key adviser to an incoming president of the United States that he helped elect this year — and this is a side project for him. What stamp-collecting is to most us — something we make time for when not engaged in our day jobs — influencing the future direction of the United States government is to Musk. This is not to minimize his significance. Far from it. The revolutionary businessman represents a distinctive and unexpected contribution to the Trump coalition. From the perspective of a decade ago, if you had said the most visionary and wealthy entrepreneur on the planet was at the right hand of a Republican president-elect, promising to cut a couple of trillion of dollars from the federal budget and bring massive innovation to the economy, you might have assumed Paul Ryan or someone in his ideological camp had gotten elected. The former Speaker of the House and vice-presidential nominee was a relentless advocate of entrepreneurship, economic dynamism and a slimmed-down government. Within the GOP, the rise of Trump the populist put the political squeeze on the likes of Ryan, whose business-oriented, free-market creed suddenly felt stale and out-of-touch. Now, a version of that worldview has returned via Musk. To be sure, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX is a different animal. He has an in-your-face persona, a bit of a Silicon Valley version of Trump. He’s been radicalized on immigration, becoming a fierce opponent of Joe Biden’s open border. He’s cultural warrior seeking to destroy what he calls “the woke mind virus.” And he is hated with a passion by the other side, which would shut him down if it could. The Biden SEC has notably clashed with him, and is trying to sanction him for how he acquired Twitter. All of this, and especially that acquisition, have made him a populist hero in his own right, even as he champions an economic dynamism that would have thrilled conventional Republicans from the pre-Trump era. Trump contains multitudes. Part of him is an inward-looking protectionist who believes, almost no matter what, that we are getting ripped off by foreign countries. Part of him is also a champion of endless possibility. Part of him is a tribune of the working class. Part of him is also inclined to make the stock market the economic measure of all things. He’ll talk of American carnage, and of an American golden age. This is a protean mix, and subject to change depending on circumstances and who is around Trump at any given point. A danger of populism is that it can succumb to pure nostalgia and become overly defensive, giving in to a distrust of technology, big companies and economic change. So long Musk is a major player in Trump’s world, there is a strong counter to this tendency. Musk is the paladin of a future ripped from the covers of paperback science-fiction novels circa 1950 — rocket ships, futuristic cars, robots and giant tunnel-boring machines. He has almost single-handedly changed Republican attitudes toward Big Tech. He’s proven that you can be a Silicon Valley entrepreneur and not be woke or a cowardly fellow-traveler with left-wing politics. There’s still plenty of contempt of and distrust for tech companies on the right, but now it is Democrats who talk more of ideas like repealing Section 230 to hobble social-media companies. At the same time, Musk’s DOGE has made talk of cutting government fashionable again on the right, when this priority had mostly lost out to other concerns since the advent of the Trump era. The hope that DOGE will cut as much as $2 trillion from the budget is unrealistic, but any savings and efficiencies would be welcome. Who knows how effective Musk will be in his role as a change agent confronting government, the most difficult institution to change? Sending a man to Mars might be easier. The Peru Football international has allowed just one goal all postseason, and while he's benefited from a lock-down defense in front of him, he's stepped up when called on. On the other side, NY Red Bulls have hit their stride in the postseaso n. After sweeping the Columbus Crew SC in Round One, the Red Bulls dispatched New York City FC on the road in their conference semifinal match-up, with goals from Felipe Carballo and Dante Vanzier giving them an early and ultimately unassailable lead. As typical for a Red Bulls team, they base their game model around a high press with heavy emphasis on winning second balls and tackles in the attacking half, leading to plenty of turnovers close to goal. It's worked for them against two of the more possession-based teams in the MLS Eastern Conference , but Orlando pose a very different challenge. With both sides better against the ball than with it, it's hard to pick out a clear protagonist heading into things. Both Orlando and New York are more than capable of winning battles in midfield, but the Red Bulls have the edge when it comes to turning won tackles into ball progression. It looks like being a tight (and possibly ugly) match, but the Red Bulls have already beaten better opponents this postseason. Los Angeles Galaxy have been nothing short of dominant in the postseason. The swept the Colorado Rapids in Round One by an aggregate 9-1 scoreline and breezed past Minnesota United in the conference semifinals in a 6-2 route. Riqui Puig had a reasonable case to be the best player in MLS during the regular season, and he has upped the ante in the playoffs with a total of four goals and two assists. The entire team revolves around the FC Barcelona academy product, with Joseph Paintsil and Gabriel Pec consistently making daring runs into space, knowing that Puig has the ability to find them. While their defense has been called into question all season, they've allowed just three goals and 0.87 expected goals per match, the second-lowest of any playoff team per American Soccer Analysis . ( Orlando City SC lead all playoff teams with 0.81 per match). Their ability to absolutely dominate teams in the final third, build out from the back, and simply outscore opponents no matter the scenario, make them the heavy favorites to lift MLS Cup at this point. Seattle Sounders weren't a trendy pick to make it this far, but they've absolutely earned their place with wins over Houston Dynamo and a heavily-favored Los Angeles FC side. Their defense has been the story of their 2024 campaign, allowing just 35 goals in the regular season, and a league-best 1.20 expected goals per game in the regular season and playoffs, per ASA. Stefan Frei has rediscovered his best form, impressing against LAFC behind an absolutely dominant defense. Yeimar Gómez and Jackson Ragen have developed into one of MLS's premier center-back duos, but Yeimar is a doubt for Saturday's match after coming off injured against LAFC. Nouhou Tolo and Reed Baker-Whiting are also battling injuries and illness, potentially depriving head coach Brian Schmetzer of three of his more important players. As good as Seattle's defense is, it's hard to see them keeping Puig & Co. quiet for a full 90 minutes. And while Jordan Morris has excelled as a No. 9 this season, the Sounders don't have the firepower to hang with the Galaxy in a shootout, at least on paper. The Sounders will go into the match looking to keep things tight and compact for as long as possible, but if Los Angeles can find an early goal, the game will inevitably blow wide open.
