The images of China’s brand new warplanes, which appeared online this week, is a bold “invitation” to an arms race for a next-generation fighter, Dmitry Stefanovich, a military researcher at the Institute of World Economy and International Relations of the Russian Academy of Sciences, has told RT. The videos and photos posted to social media on December 26 show two previously unseen tailles jets – a larger diamond-shaped aircraft, and a smaller plane with an arrow-wing-shaped airframe. While Beijing stays silent on the matter, the display sparked discussion in international media, with some observers suggesting the aircraft could be the first sixth-generation fighter planes. “So far, we have only seen two variants of experimental aircraft,” Stefanovich said. “Presumably, one of them can be tailored for strike missions that involve attacks on ground and, perhaps, naval targets, while another one is tasked with dominating the skies and controlling the airspace.” The footage “demonstrates the general state of the development” of Chinese aircraft rather than sixth-generation planes specifically, the expert argued, noting that ‘sixth generation’ is a “loosely applied term.” Therefore, it is too early to draw definitive conclusions about the capabilities of the new planes, he said. Beijing will have to compete with American next-generation fighter programs, Stefanovich said. “While there are no game-changers on the horizon, China is explicitly inviting to participate in an arms race, at least in terms of quality,” he said. “We should not forget, however, that the US is the only country with an advanced-stage program for a new strategic bomber – the B-21 – which can be adapted for some of what we would call sixth-generation capabilities. The Chinese and Russian planes of comparable type have not taken off the ground yet,” Stefanovich said.Former Chiefs' Player's Family Says NFL Treats CTE Victims as 'Throwaways'In a significant diplomatic engagement at Mar-a-Lago, US President-elect Donald Trump met with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to delve into pressing issues like trade, tariffs, and border security. Trump, through social media, labeled the meeting as 'productive,' acknowledging Trudeau's efforts to tackle shared challenges. However, key disputes between the US and Canada remain unresolved. Discussing Fentanyl, illegal immigration, and trade imbalances, Trump emphasized the US's commitment to combating the drug crisis, underscoring cooperation with Canada on these critical matters. This article examines the nations with the largest prison populations as at December, 2023. The United States leads the world in prison population, with over two million people incarcerated. This staggering number is primarily attributed to strict sentencing laws, including mandatory minimums and the “three-strikes” rule. Despite having only 4% of the world’s population, the U.S. accounts for nearly 20% of the global prison population. China’s prison population exceeds 1.7 million, although the exact numbers are challenging to verify due to government secrecy. Strict laws and a heavy-handed approach to crime contribute to these figures. Brazil’s prisons hold over 800,000 inmates, a number that has soared due to organized crime, drug trafficking, and poverty. Overcrowding is a critical issue, with facilities often holding double their capacity. Russia has one of the highest incarceration rates in Europe, with over 470,000 inmates. Harsh sentencing practices, a legacy of Soviet-era penal policies, and a lack of judicial reforms contribute to the high prison population. India’s prison population exceeds 480,000, with a significant proportion being undertrial prisoners — those awaiting judgment. Overburdened courts, slow legal proceedings, and poverty significantly keep these numbers high. Turkey’s prison population has surged in recent years, reaching nearly 300,000. Political crackdowns following the 2016 coup attempt, along with terrorism-related arrests, have contributed to the increase. Indonesia has over 260,000 prisoners, many incarcerated for drug-related offenses. The country’s strict anti-drug laws have led to an overburdened prison system. While incarceration is often seen as a solution to crime, these figures reveal deeper societal and governance issues. Get real-time news updates from Tribune Online!
