(AP) — Luke Kromenhoek threw for 209 yards and tossed three touchdown passes as Florida State halted a six-game losing streak and routed Charleston Southern 41-7 on Saturday. Kromenhoek completed 13 of 20 passes in his first college start, including a 71-yard touchdown pass to Ja’Khi Douglas, as the Seminoles (2-9) won for the first time since Sept. 21. The true freshman also connected with Amaree Williams for a 4-yard TD and Hykeem Williams for a 10-yard TD. “It was unbelievable, it was a dream come true,” Kromenhoek said. “The more snaps I get, the more reps that I get, it slows down little by little. The Gary Redevelopment Commission unanimously approved a more than $58,000 contract for illuminated signage at its Wednesday meeting, after addressing a resident’s concerns. The contract between the city and Signal Technologies Inc. will pay the company no more than $58,825 to install illuminated signs along the downtown corridor. The contract lasts through Dec. 18, 2025. Christopher Harris, executive director of the Redevelopment Commission, said the signs will be located between Fourth and Eighth Avenues and Broadway. Harris called the contract an opportunity to invest in the city’s downtown. “If you’re familiar with communities surrounding our city, you might have seen business corridors that have illuminated signage that’s large and very easy to see for motorists,” Harris told commission board members. “As we prepare to redevelop the downtown corridor, the mayor has been very intentional to show signs of progress and showing reinforcement in our downtown.” The new signs will be blue, which Harris said is the color Gary Mayor Eddie Melton recommended. Signs will also be branded with the city’s logo, which is inspired by nearby cities including Chesterton and Valparaiso, Harris said. In addition to new signage, city officials are investing in downtown through blight elimination. At Gary Common Council’s final 2024 meeting, members approved a $3 million spending plan for blight elimination in the transportation district, which centers around the Adam Benjamin Metro Center in the city’s downtown. The city will use American Rescue Plans Act funds to match funds from Senate Bill 434, which Melton helped create as a state senator in 2023. The bill established the blighted property demolition fund and allows the city to receive $6 million from the state for blight elimination. The Northwest Indiana Regional Development Agency has $6 million set aside for blight elimination, which will be reimbursed by the state. RDA will receive $3 million in the current fiscal year and $3 million after July 1, according to Post-Tribune archives. Investing in downtown is important for the city, Harris said Wednesday. “(The signage) will provide the downtown corridor with a much more completed look,” he added. During the commission board meeting’s public comment, Gary resident Jim Nowacki expressed concerns with the illuminated signage contract. Before the vote, Vice President Darren Washington asked Harris to confirm that the signs won’t have strobes or be flashing. Harris confirmed the signs won’t, and the illumination will help motorists see. Where Will Palantir Stock Be in 3 Years?A research team led by Prof. Seung-Kyun Kang from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Seoul National University has developed a strain sensor with record-breaking sensitivity in collaboration with researchers from Dankook University, Ajou University, and Purdue University. This study introduced a hypersensitive, flexible, and stretchable sensor by combining microcracks with meta-structures in an innovative way. The advanced technology enables real-time stroke diagnosis through continuous blood flow monitoring, opening new possibilities in the field of precision biomedical engineering. The results of this study were published online on December 20 in Science Advances . Flexible and stretchable strain sensors detect biomechanical signals or deformation of specific objects based on changes in the electrical resistance of conductive materials. However, previous sensors are limited by low sensitivity and a significant decline in performance when measuring infinitesimal strains below 10 −3 . This limitation poses critical challenges in the early diagnosis of diseases associated with mechanical physiological signals, as well as in structural reliability assessments and preemptive safety evaluations. For instance, cerebrovascular diseases such as brain hemorrhage or ischemia are accompanied by infinitesimal strains smaller than 10 −3 before they become life-threatening. Similarly, structural materials typically experience surface strain levels of 10 −5 to 10 −3 prior to catastrophic failure, which can lead to significant loss of life. To address these challenges, Prof. Kang's team introduced a meta-structure with a negative Poisson's ratio, achieving up to 100 times greater sensitivity compared to the previous sensors. Their sensor is capable of detecting strains as small as 10 −5 strains, equivalent to a change in length on the scale of a single atom on the surface of a human hair. The sensor developed in this study achieved world-leading strain sensitivity by amplifying electrical resistance changes through controlled widening of nanoscale microcracks. As a result, it demonstrated the capability to monitor infinitesimal deformations accompanying microbial growth processes, such as real-time detection of contact induced by the growth of mold hyphae on bread (generating strain levels as small as 10 −5 ). The newly-developed sensor demonstrated significant potential for applications in biological environments. The research team successfully attached the sensors to the surface of cerebral blood vessels inside the skull, enabling real-time monitoring of blood pressure and blood flow changes. This breakthrough highlights the potential of the sensor for early diagnosis of cerebrovascular diseases such as cerebral hemorrhage and ischemia, as well as cardiovascular disorders, while providing precise medical data. Furthermore, the sensor consists of biodegradable materials, allowing it to decompose naturally without long-term residue in the body, ensuring patient safety without the need for additional surgeries or side effects. The research team stated, "This study is not merely about improving sensor performance, but about presenting a groundbreaking approach that overcomes the fundamental limitations of the previous technologies. We anticipate wide-ranging applications not only in bioengineering and medical devices but also in fields such as robotics, disaster response, and environmental monitoring."
