Whether they’re hung on fireplace mantles, stair banisters or at the foot of the bed, Christmas stockings are a beloved holiday tradition for many. While the origins are a bit murky (some credit the story of Saint Nicholas leaving behind gold in the drying stockings of a poor family as the source), stockings continue to be a fun way to gift small items like toys and sweets at Christmas. Technically, anything that fits inside a stocking could be considered a stocking stuffer. However, I always find practical yet inexpensive or edible gifts to be the best choice. With that in mind, here are 10 of our favourite under-$25 stocking stuffers to delight your friends and family this Christmas. That same truck, equipped with the newest firefighting technology, can cost more than $1 million nowadays. The longtime Grand Blanc Township fire chief is retiring at the end of this year. His last day on Dec. 31 will cap a 43-year career with the same department. He’s served as chief since July 2016. The township appointed Kent Maricle as interim fire chief as the search for a new full-time chief is conducted. Applications are open now and must be filed by Jan. 5. Burdette first joined the fire department after a friend introduced him to the fire chief. He was a teenager working at a hardware store in downtown Grand Blanc at the time, and whenever the fire alarm would go off, he and his coworkers would watch the trucks exit the garage. “Seeing those guys going out all the time, it was just like every little kid’s dream – a firefighter,” Burdette said. Soon after he began working as an on-call firefighter, Burdette learned the firefighting industry was constantly changing. The industry faced new challenges, like lithium-ion batteries in cell phones and cameras, as Burdette pointed out. “When the call comes in, you’re going to meet people at their worst time,” Burdette said. “...If you don’t want to be around them or know how to talk to them, help them out, or anything like that, this is not the job for you.” Not only do you have to be prepared for the social aspect of working with the community, you must also be willing to respond to a call at any time of the day or night, work outdoors in below-zero wind chills and get dirty, Burdette said. Burdette, 63, served in each of the department’s roles throughout his career: on-call firefighter, sergeant, lieutenant, captain, battalion chief, assistant chief and deputy chief. He oversaw the department as it broke off from the city of Grand Blanc in 2019 and assisted in the renovation of the Baldwin Road fire station with his team. Burdette recalled memories of ringing bells for the Salvation Army, meet-and-greets and lighthearted practical jokes around the station. Years ago, when he was working in the downtown fire station, Burdette got an urgent call to come to the office. He rushed in, took a seat, and an air horn rigged to the chair blew. He advises young people who are considering careers as firefighters keep an open mind and a sense of humor. Burdette grew closer and closer to his community over the years. The Burdette family already had strong roots in the Grand Blanc area, so it was easy for the retiring fire chief to stay in town. In retirement, Burdette plans to spend time with his wife and five grandchildren. Want more Flint-area news? Bookmark the local Flint news page or sign up for the free “ 3@3 Flint ” daily newsletter.

Adani CFO says bribery allegations linked to single business contractCLEVELAND (AP) — Shortly after doing a face-down snow angel, firing a few celebratory snowballs and singing “Jingle Bells” on his way to the media room, Jameis Winston ended his postgame news conference with a simple question. “Am I a Brown yet?” he asked. He is now. And who knows? Maybe for a lot longer than expected. Winston entered Cleveland football folklore on Thursday night by leading the Browns to a 24-19 win over the division rival Pittsburgh Steelers, who had their five-game winning streak stopped. Winston's performance at Huntington Bank Field, which transformed into the world's largest snow globe, not only made him an instantaneous hero in the eyes of Browns fans but added another wrinkle to the team's ever-changing, never-ending quarterback conundrum. In his fourth start since Deshaun Watson's season-ending Achilles tendon injury, Winston made enough big plays to help the Browns (3-8) get a victory that should quiet conjecture about coach Kevin Stefanski's job. Some wins mean more than others. In Cleveland, beating the Steelers is as big as it gets. But beyond any instant gratification, Winston has given the Browns more to consider as they move forward. Watson's future with Cleveland is highly uncertain since it will still be months before the team has a grip on whether he's even an option in 2025, his fourth year since signing a $230 million, fully guaranteed contract that has proven calamitous. It's also possible the Browns will cut ties with Watson. They signed Winston to a one-year contract to be Watson's backup. But the unexpected events of 2024 have changed plans and led to the possibility that the 30-year-old Winston could become Cleveland's full-time QB or a bridge to their next young one. So much is unclear. What's not is that Winston, who leaped into the end zone on fourth-and-2 for a TD to put the Browns ahead 18-6 in the fourth quarter, is a difference maker. With his larger-than-life personality and the joy he shows whether practicing or throwing three touchdown passes, he has lifted the Browns. A man of faith, he's made his teammates believe. Winston has done what Watson couldn't: made the Browns better. “A very, very authentic person,” Stefanski said Friday on a Zoom call. “He’s the same guy every single day. He's the same guy at 5 a.m. as he at 5 p.m. He brings great energy to everything he does, and I think his teammates appreciate that about him.” Winston, who is 2-2 as a starter with wins over the Steelers and Baltimore Ravens, has a knack for inspiring through fiery, preacher-like pregame speeches. But what has impressed the Browns is his ability to stay calm in the storm. “He doesn’t get rattled,” said Myles Garrett, who had three sacks against the Steelers . “He’s just tuned in and focused as anyone I’ve seen at that position. Turn the page. There was a turnover, came back to the sideline, ‘Love you. I’m sorry. We’re going to get it back.’ He was already on to the next one, ‘How can we complete the mission?’ “I have a lot of respect for him. First was from afar and now seeing it on the field in front of me, it’s a blessing to have someone who plays a game with such a passion and want-to. You can’t ask for a better teammate when they take those things to heart and they want to play for you like we’re actually brothers and that’s what we have to attain. That brotherhood.” Winston has done something else Watson couldn't: move the offense. The Browns scored more than 20 points for just the second time this season, and like Joe Flacco a year ago, Winston has shown that Stefanski's system works with a quarterback patient enough to let plays develop and unafraid to take shots downfield. The conditions certainly were a factor, but the Browns were a miserable 1 of 10 on third down, a season-long trend. However, Cleveland converted all four fourth-down tries, including a fourth-and-3 pass from Winston to Jerry Jeudy with 2:36 left that helped set up Nick Chubb's go-ahead TD run. RT Jack Conklin. Garrett outplayed Steelers star T.J. Watt in their rivalry within the rivalry partly because Conklin did a nice job containing Pittsburgh's edge rusher, who was held without a sack and had one tackle for loss. Conklin has made a remarkable comeback since undergoing reconstructive knee surgery last year. Owners Dee and Jimmy Haslam. Their desire to build a dome is well intended, but an indoor game could never come close to matching the surreal setting of Thursday night, when snow swirled throughout the stadium and covered nearly all the yard lines and hash marks. “It was beautiful,” Winston said. WR Cedric Tillman is in the concussion protocol. He had two catches before taking a big hit on the final play of the third quarter. 9 — Consecutive home wins for the Browns in Thursday night games. Spread holiday cheer with these fun and festive stocking stuffer ideasMETAIRIE, La. (AP) — If Saints interim coach Darren Rizzi has any definite ideas about who'll play quarterback for New Orleans against Washington on Sunday, he's not ready to share that information. Rizzi maintained on Wednesday that there's still a chance that Derek Carr could clear the concussion protocol and function well enough with his injured, non-throwing left hand to return against the Commanders. Meanwhile, reserve QBs Jake Haener and Spencer Rattler split first-team snaps during Wednesday's practice, which Carr missed, Rizzi said. “We're not going to name a starter right now,” said Rizzi, who also made a point of noting that Carr would not be placed on the club's injured reserve list and would not need surgery. “We're going to see how that progression plays out, first with Derek and then obviously with Jake and Spencer.” Carr, whose latest injury occurred when he tried to dive for a first down during Sunday's 14-11 victory over the New York Giants , has already missed three starts this season because of a separate, oblique injury. New Orleans lost all three of those games, with Rattler, a rookie, starting and Haener, a second-year pro, serving as the backup. In his three starts, Rattler completed 59 of 99 passes (59.6%) for 571 yards, one TD and two interceptions. Haener has gotten sporadic work this season in relief of both Carr and Rattler, completing 14 of 29 passes (48.3%) for 177 yards and one TD without an interception. Rizzi said he finds the 6-foot-1 Haener and 6-foot Rattler “very similar in a lot of ways," adding that whichever of those two might play “doesn't change a whole bunch" in terms of game-planning. “They're both similar-size guys. Their athletic ability is very similar,” Rizzi said. “They're similar-style quarterbacks. We're not dealing with opposites on the spectrum.” The Saints also signed another QB this week — Ben DiNucci — to help take scout team snaps at practice, now that Rattler and Haener are not as available to do that while competing to possibly start if Carr is indeed unable to play. The Saints (5-8) have won three of four games since Rizzi took over following the firing of coach Dennis Allen. That allowed New Orleans to remain alive in the NFC South Division, currently led by Tampa Bay (7-6). Rizzi said Carr has not had any setbacks this week in terms of progressing through the NFL's concussion protocol. “By the end of the week, if's he's not able to get any reps in any form or fashion, then obviously we'll go with one of the other guys,” Rizzi said. NOTES: RB Alvin Kamara did not practice on Wednesday because of an illness. ... WR Chris Olave, who is out indefinitely because of concussions this season, has returned to meetings at Saints headquarters. He as not, however, made plans to return to practice yet because he still plans to meet first with neurological specialists to try to assess the risks of returning to action during what's left of this season. Rizzi said the possibility of Olave playing again this season remains “on the table” for now. AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/NFL
The last two countries announced their 4 Nations Roster and the Toronto Maple Leafs were well represented. With the 4 Nations Face-Off taking place next February, teams are coming together as the international battle for supremacy will no doubt capture the attention of fans. Sweden and Finland already announced their rosters with two Toronto Maple Leafs represented with Jani Hakanpaa for Finland and William Nylander for Sweden. Canada and the United States were also taking note of some very familiar names as Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner have been named to their respective teams. Matthews will don the red, white, and blue as he takes the ice alongside some pretty hefty players like Brock Nelson, the Tkachuk Brothers, Chris Kreider and Brock Faber. It will be Matthews' 6th time representing the United States after various junior hockey nominations. Even though he missed basically the entirety of November, there's no denying Matthews would earn himself a spot. Last year's leading goal-scorer is going to be a dangerous weapon for Team USA as they try and use their size and skill to control the game. Even though he's missed a month, Matthews is still enjoying a solid season with 15 points in 14 games and recently returned to the team and made an instant impact. Marner will join Team Canada as the only Maple Leaf although there were conversations that potentially teammate Chris Tanev would join as well though that's not the case. Enjoying an electric season with the Maple Leafs, Marner has scored 33 points in 24 games (9 goals, 24 assists) and led the team in the wake of Matthews' injury. Without him, the team would be nowhere near as successful as they have been a quarter of the way through the season. Marner joins Team Canada for the 4th time as he joins up with some pretty prominent Canadian players such as Sidney Crosby , Connor McDavid, and Nathan MacKinnon among a slew of future Hall of Famers. More details to come. This article first appeared on Hockey Patrol and was syndicated with permission.
WASHINGTON − Seven years before President-elect Donald Trump pushed FBI Director Christopher Wray into announcing Wednesday he will step down at the end President Biden's term, Trump appointed Wray and called him "a model of integrity." In the years since, Trump soured on the nation's top law enforcement official for overseeing investigations into his allegedly trying to overturn the 2020 election and retaining classified documents after he left office in January 2021. Trump had already nominated Kash Patel, an ardent Trump supporter, to be Wray’s replacement , thus signaling his intent to fire Wray upon taking office. Here’s a list of key events in the fraught relationship between Trump and Wray that began in 2017 with Wray’s nomination to head the Federal Bureau of Investigation. June 7, 2017: Trump nominates Wray After firing FBI Director James Comey for his role in investigating Trump’s potential role in Russian interference in the 2016 election, then-President Trump nominates Wray as head of the nation’s premier law enforcement agency, in charge of 35,000 people including more than 10,000 “special agents” across the U.S. and around the world. Trump described Wray as a " model of integrity " and an "impeccably qualified individual" for the role of investigating crimes and foreign influence in the United States without fear or favor. Wray had began his career clerking for prominent conservative U.S. Appeals Court Judge J. Michael Luttig and served as a prosecutor in the Justice Department. He was appointed assistant attorney general, charge of the department's criminal division, by President George W. Bush. Prior to being named FBI director, he was a partner at the law firm King & Spaulding. After receiving Senate confirmation, Wray began his 10-year term at the FBI, a unique protection created by Congress specifically to insulate the FBI director position from political influence, especially from the White House. December 7, 2017: Wray defends the FBI Four months after Wray is sworn in as the eighth director of the FBI, he publicly defends the agency from Trump’s criticism of its role in investigating Russian interference in the 2016 election to help Trump defeat Democratic rival Hillary Clinton. After Trump tweeted that the bureau's reputation was " in Tatters – worst in history! " and called its impartiality into question, Wray told the House Judiciary Committee that, "The FBI I see are tens of thousands of men and woman who are hard charging people of integrity." Sept. 24, 2020: Trump criticized the FBI As Russia interferes in the election to help Trump beat former Vice-President Joe Biden, Trump sharply criticizes U.S. law enforcement and intelligence officials for investigating and publicizing what he describes as "Fake News" and the "Russia Hoax." In testimony before the House Homeland Security Committee , Wray says, “we are not going to tolerate foreign interference in our elections” and describes how the FBI was working with Facebook and Twitter to shut Russian disinformation campaigns down before they “could develop some kind of broader following.” August 8, 2022: FBI searches Mar-a-Lago The FBI conducts a search of Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Fla. to recover classified documents that Trump took with him from the White House and refused to return. This infuriates Trump, who decries the "weaponization of the Justice Department" and begins a campaign of publicly criticizing the FBI, saying the agency is part of a Deep State “hoax” and attack against him. The documents seized by agents play the central role in one of the two felony criminal cases ultimately filed against Trump – the first charges against a former president in U.S. history – by Justice Department special counsel Jack Smith. The other case, filed in July 2023 and based on an investigation that involved the work of FBI agents, accuses Trump of trying to steal the 2020 election that he lost to Biden. Trump maintains his innocence and pleaded not guilty in both cases. “Biden’s DOJ was authorized to use DEADLY FORCE” in Mar-a-Lago raid, Trump falsely claimed at one point , adding that FBI agents were “locked and loaded” and “ready to take me out.” Wray, and Attorney General Merrick Garland flatly denied any bias, and said the search was authorized by a judge as required. Nov. 5, 2024: Trump is elected Trump wins the presidential election. The DOJ subsequently moves to have both cases dismissed, per its policy of not prosecuting a sitting president. Trump's spokesman Steven Cheung applauds the move, saying, "Today's decision by the DOJ ends the unconstitutional federal cases against President Trump, and is a major victory for the rule of law." Nov. 30, 2024: Trump nominates Kash Patel to replace Wray Trump nominates Patel , a former Justice Department prosecutor, congressional staffer and national security official in Trump's first administration. Patel had publicly vowed to go after senior FBI and Justice Department officials who investigated Trump, and to shut down FBI headquarters "on Day One" and turn it into a museum for the so-called "deep state" national security bureaucracy that Trump believes has been out to get him. Dec. 11, 2024: Wray announces resignation Wray informs FBI employees of his decision to resign next month at the end of Biden's term on January 20, 2025. His announcement comes two days after a key Republican senator who will have oversight of the FBI issues a stinging rebuke of Wray and his “failed” and politicized leadership of the law enforcement agency and calls on him to step down immediately. Wray describes his decision as the best way to “keep the focus on our mission... and avoid dragging the bureau deeper into the fray, while reinforcing the values and principles that are so important to how we do our work.” He has more than two years left in his term. Trump immediately hails Wray’s resignation on social media as “a great day for America as it will end the Weaponization of what has become known as the United States Department of Injustice." Trump said in a statement on social media . "Under the leadership of Christopher Wray, the FBI illegally raided my home, without cause, worked diligently on illegally impeaching and indicting me, and has done everything else to interfere with the success and future of America." In a statement, Attorney General Merrick Garland said Wray "has served our country honorably and with integrity for decades, including for seven years as the Director of the FBI under presidents of both parties.”

PARIS (Reuters) -Leaders Paris St Germain beat Toulouse 3-0 in Ligue 1 on Friday as the Parisians remained unbeaten in their domestic campaign following goals by Joao Neves, Lucas Beraldo and Vitinha. Neves put the hosts in front in the 35th minute with a volley from the edge of the area, before Beraldo doubled the lead with first touch late in the second half and substitute Vitinha sealed the win in stoppage time. PSG top the French top flight with 32 points, six ahead of second-placed AS Monaco who beat Brest 3-2 earlier on Friday. With their fifth consecutive win, PSG are one of the three teams among the European top five leagues that remain undefeated this season alongside Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich and Juventus, currently sixth in Serie A. PSG, who travel to Bayern in the Champions League on Tuesday, started off cautiously against Toulouse, who handed the Parisians their only defeat in their previous 40 Ligue 1 games. League's top scorer Bradley Barcola was denied a good opportunity by Toulouse goalkeeper Guillaume Restes, an attempt that came one minute before Neves opened the scoring, netting a neat weighted pass from Achraf Hakimi low inside the left post. Hakimi had a chance of his own from a distance as PSG continued to dominate the possession after the restart, but Restes parried his shot above the bar. Warren Zaire-Emery then thought he doubled the lead for the hosts in the 54th minute, a goal that was ruled out for offside after a lengthy VAR review. Toulouse struggled to capitalise on the few chances that came their way, with substitute Shavy Babicka firing over the bar from close range minutes after entering the pitch. Beraldo, however, added a second in the 84th minute, scoring from around the penalty spot for his first goal of the season after he landed a rebound, before Vitinha netted a precise cross from fellow substitute Randal Kolo Muani to seal the points. Following their 1-0 win over Lens on Nov. 2, PSG have now kept two consecutive clean sheets at home in Ligue 1 for the first time in a year. They next host Nantes on Nov. 30. Toulouse, who are 10th on 15 points, welcome Auxerre on Dec. 1. (Reporting by Anita Kobylinska in Gdansk, editing by Pritha Sarkar)
The news about academic cheating has gone from worrying to post mortem. Colleges apparently can’t manage cheating on any level. As usual, a lot of handwringing and total lack of answers produce a sort of techno-manga doomscape. Those headlines create a bizarre set of situations from “ AI is an existential threat to colleges” from the Washington Post (paywall) to the truly alarming penalizing of a student for proofreading using Grammarly. The AI outscores the humans relentlessly at about 83%, according to Forbes . As usual, honesty gets you nowhere. See that quaint little rustic waste of time called the USA for details. Strangely, people aren’t happy with this 100% true-to-Western-cultural breakthrough into institutional incompetence and corruption. Despite the decades of noble roles of mainstream media and so many utterly futile public figures, people who can’t do their jobs aren’t much in demand. “Why not?” you enquire, grimly bolting yourself to the ridiculous shriveled lettuce of a society. Well, ‘cause: Education has become a stagnant backwater of regressive politics. They’re either scared of it or actively trying to prevent it. See Oklahoma for details. Defunding public education is actually a stated policy in the USA. If they seriously think everyone can afford private education, you can see the level of intellect in the mix. Past idiocies sabotaged education decades ago. The blame isn’t all one-way. Imbecile ideas like not teaching phonics (structuring basic words and concepts) did a lot of damage. Many people in multiple generations are functionally illiterate. The illiteracy of the system itself doesn’t exactly help in managing AI issues. Literacy isn’t just being able to read. It’s being able to understand what you read. It’s essential to critical thinking, of which we have so little lately. The future isn’t looking at all good for the skills bases required to manage new tech and things like human reality. Let’s get down to basics: 1, AI cannot replace humans. If you replace people with AI, you have to check absolutely everything. It’s actually more work. 2, AI doesn’t give you actual skills. You still need to learn and understand to know your stuff. Your overpriced education is utterly meaningless and useless if you can’t do the jobs. 3. It’s pretty easy to prove who can really do a job and who can’t. All you need is a simple competence test. See if the useless smug little brats can function. 4, Force AI providers to include AI detection capacity in their products by law. This “free lunch for fakes” stuff has to stop somewhere. Bear in mind that the present capacity is nothing like up to this task. According to the Forbes article above, the current 6% detection rate of AI is an overestimate.
