On Christmas Eve, the spacecraft came within an unprecedented 3.8 million miles of the Sun’s surface, an achievement previously believed to be impossible. After numerous days of communication silence, NASA confirmed on Thursday that the spacecraft was secure and functional after its intense flyby. Scientists anticipate the information Parker will transmit on New Year's Day, providing important perspectives on the probe's functioning and solar studies. NASA's Past Releases and Anticipated New Images Since its launch in 2018, the Parker Solar Probe has returned remarkable images. Its previous near-distance encounters withthe Sun has enabled it to take images of the Sun’s corona, offering remarkable perspectives of the star's outer atmosphere. Although the probe's main objective is to collect information regarding solar activity, it has also provided visually impressive images, uncovering fresh insights into the Sun's behavior and architecture. While the probe persists in its mission, NASA is anticipated to unveil additional images and data from Parker's closest flyby of the Sun. Parker Solar Probe’s Engineering Marvel: A Close Encounter Experts consider the Parker Solar Probe a remarkable engineering accomplishment in space exploration. Its specialized thermal shield allows the spacecraft to withstand harsh conditions, tolerating temperatures reaching 2,500°F as it approaches the Sun. This thermal shield guarantees that the scientific instruments, situated at the back of the probe, stay in a consistent, room-temperature setting. The shield's efficiency is vital in stopping the spacecraft from incinerating. In its earlier flybys, notably the one over Venus in November, the Parker Solar Probe harnessed the planet's gravitational pull to modify its path, eventually achieving its ultimate orbit around the Sun. As the probe advances on its mission, its instruments will gather important data on solar energy transfers, enhancing our knowledge of the Sun’s influence on Earth. Studies such as this are vital, given that our planet's dependence on the Sun necessitates an understanding of the dynamics within our solar system. The Parker Solar Probe’s Exploration of Venus In addition to its tasks close to the Sun, Parker’s technology also aided in the exploration of Venus. Utilizing its camera, the Parker Solar Probe's Wide-Field Imager (WISPR) obtained distinctive images of Venus while flying past. Although the dense cloud cover usually hides the planet's surface, WISPR's near-infrared features enabled it to observe the luminous surface of Venus, uncovering the planet's intense heat. Noam Izenberg, a space scientist at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory, emphasized the importance of these findings, describing them as a crucial advance in comprehending Venus' extreme conditions. The request came as TikTok and the Biden administration filed opposing briefs to the court, in which the company argued the court should strike down a law that could ban the platform by Jan. 19 while the government emphasized its position that the statute is needed to eliminate a national security risk. “President Trump takes no position on the underlying merits of this dispute. Instead, he respectfully requests that the Court consider staying the Act’s deadline for divestment of January 19, 2025, while it considers the merits of this case,” said Trump’s amicus brief, which supported neither party in the case. The filings come ahead of oral arguments scheduled for Jan. 10 on whether the law, which requires TikTok to divest from its China-based parent company or face a ban, unlawfully restricts speech in violation of the First Amendment. Earlier this month, a panel of three federal judges on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit unanimously upheld the statute , leading TikTok to appeal the case to the Supreme Court. The brief from Trump said he opposes banning TikTok at this junction and “seeks the ability to resolve the issues at hand through political means once he takes office.”

Among those possibilities is replacing Florida Sen. Marco Rubio , whom Trump tapped to be the next secretary of state. If Rubio is confirmed, his replacement — who would be chosen by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis — would serve for two years until the next regularly scheduled election in 2026, at which point the seat would be up for election again. “It is something I would seriously consider,” Lara Trump told The Associated Press in an interview. “If I’m being completely transparent, I don’t know exactly what that would look like. And I certainly want to get all of the information possible if that is something that’s real for me. But yeah, I would 100% consider it.” Elected as RNC co-chair in March, Lara Trump was a key player in the Republicans retaking the White House and control of the Senate while maintaining a narrow House majority. What she does next could shape Republican politics, given her elevated political profile and her ties to the incoming president. The idea of placing a Trump family member in the Senate has been lauded in some Republican circles. Among the people pushing for her to replace Rubio is Maye Musk, mother of Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk . “The Senate is an old man’s club. We desperately need a smart, young, outspoken woman who will reveal their secrets,” she posted on X. Lara Trump is 42. Elon Musk, who was with Lara Trump on election night at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, responded to his mother’s post: “Lara Trump is genuinely great.” Led by chairman Michael Whatley and Lara Trump, the RNC invested heavily in recruiting roughly 230,000 volunteers and an army of lawyers for what it called its “election integrity” effort, four years after Donald Trump lost his reelection bid to Democrat Joe Biden, citing false or unproven theories about voter fraud. Outside groups such as Turning Point Action and Musk’s America PAC took a greater responsibility for advertising and get-out-the-vote efforts. While Whatley will remain RNC chairman, Lara Trump said she felt she had accomplished her goals in the co-chair role. “With that big win, I kind of feel like my time is up,” she said. “What I intended to do has been done.” President-elect Donald Trump endorsed RNC Treasurer KC Crosbie to replace Lara Trump as co-chair of the committee on Monday. “As Treasurer, she helped the RNC smash every fundraising record in History, and fortified our Party’s financial foundation. KC has been with me from the very beginning, helping REAL Republicans get elected across the Country, and would be a tremendous Co-Chair of the RNC!” President-elect Trump wrote on Truth Social. Lara Trump praised Musk’s new endeavor, the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE , a nongovernmental task force headed by Musk and and fellow entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy . They’ve been tapped to fire federal workers , cut programs and slash federal regulations as part of Trump’s “Save America” agenda for his second term. “I really don’t think we’ve seen movement like this in our federal government since our country’s founding in many ways,” she said. “And I think if they are successful in what they plan to do, I think it is going to be transformative to America in a great way.” She said she expects a different presidency this time, beginning with the structure of the administration: While Trump’s daughter Ivanka and son-in-law Jared Kushner served as White House advisers in his last administration, Lara Trump said she doesn’t see any family member taking any position in the White House this time around with her father-in-law. “He really wants to get in there and do a good job for the four years, and that’s all he wants to serve,” she said. “Four years, and he’s out.” Lara Trump also says she expects the Republican Party to be more unified than it has ever been. When she became co-chair in May, the Trump campaign and the RNC merged, with staffers fired and positions restructured. She said the result could spell trouble for GOP lawmakers who do not agree with Trump’s agenda. “The whole party has totally shifted and totally changed,” she said. “I think people are feeling a little more bold in coming out with their political views.” ___ This story has been corrected to clarify that Rubio’s Senate seat would be filled until 2026 when an election would be held for the seat. ___ Linderman reported from Baltimore and Mendoza from Santa Cruz, California. This is an increase of 895, or 12.7%, on the number of committals to prison in 2022. Meanwhile, the number of people sent to prison last year (6,494) was an 11.9% increase on the 5,801 people sent to prison in 2022. Of those committed to prison last year, 87.9% were male and 12.1% were female. The overall daily average number of prisoners in custody also increased sharply, rising 11.1% from 4,122 in 2022 to 4,582 last year. There was also a 23.7% increase in the daily average number of female offenders in custody, rising by 41 to hit 214 last year. Elsewhere, 78% of sentence committals were for 12 months or less. The Irish Penal Reform Trust (IPRT) today welcomed “efforts made to include detailed data on prison education and access to mental health services, which helps to provide greater transparency”. In all, 1,627 people attended 9,252 psychologist sessions last year within Irish prisons, with 2,665 of these being group sessions. Some 2,278 people were also referred to the psychology service last year and the wait times for triage following an open referral was 67 days last year. The IPRT also welcomed progress in the continued rollout of in-cell telephones. However, it also warned of “chronic and acute problems in prisons and in the criminal justice system more widely to stem the flow of people on short sentences into our prison system”. The IPRT also stated that “since the end of 2023, we’ve continued to break new prison overcrowding records – with safe capacity levels breached daily”. The IPRT also criticised the number of committals for the non-payment of court ordered fines, which increased in 2023 from 205 to 552. It called on the new government to “shift its thinking to deliver what is needed immediately rather than continuing with the endless refrain of building more prison spaces as if that will be a silver bullet”. which showed that 81% of adults “believe it is important for the next government to prioritise alternatives to imprisonment in cases of non-violent offences”. IPRT Executive Director, Saoirse Brady, said: “We urge the incoming government to engage with those proposals and commit the necessary resources to reduce the number of people in prison overall. “IPRT calls on any and all parties and individuals who will shortly enter Programme for Government negotiations to have the political courage to invest in proven solutions and deal with people who offend in a more effective, humane, and less costly manner.” Brady said this would “ultimately lead to more resilient individuals, safer communities and fewer people in the criminal justice system”.NFL Fans Mock CJ Stroud for Making Similar Dan Orlovsky Error
