In a letter Thursday to Secretary of State Antony Blinken, the lawmakers, led by Sen. Jim Risch, the ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said the era in which such cooperation made sense “is long gone" and the extension only “opens the door for further cooptation of American research.” The renewal of the agreement just before President Joe Biden leaves office “denies the incoming administration a chance to weigh in on this highly controversial agreement," they said, urging the administration to “reverse course.” In addition to Risch, the letter was signed by Sens. John Barrasso, Pete Ricketts, Todd Young and Bill Hagerty. The first such agreement was signed in January 1979 when the two countries established diplomatic ties to counter the influence of the Soviet Union and when China severely lagged behind the U.S. and other Western nations in science and technology. WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden said Sunday that the U.S. government believes missing American journalist Austin Tice, who disappeared 12 years ago near the Syrian capital, is alive and that Washington is committed to bringing him home after Bashar Assad’s ouster from power in Damascus . “We think we can get him back," Biden told reporters at the White House, while acknowledging that “we have no direct evidence” of his status. "Assad should be held accountable.” Biden said officials must still identify exactly where Tice is after his disappearance in August 2012 at a checkpoint in a contested area west of Damascus. “We've remained committed to returning him to his family,” he said. Tice, who is from Houston, has had his work published by The Washington Post, McClatchy newspapers and other outlets. A video released weeks after Tice went missing showed him blindfolded and held by armed men and saying, “Oh, Jesus.” He has not been heard from since. Syria has publicly denied that it was holding him. The United States has no new evidence that Tice is alive, but continues to operate under that assumption, according to a U.S. official. The Miami Dolphins need help at edge rusher, but reinforcements could be on the way. Coach Mike McDaniel announced Monday that Pro Bowl linebacker Bradley Chubb and third-year pass rusher Cameron Goode begin practicing this week after their 21-day activation windows were opened. “They’ll be out there practicing on Wednesday,” McDaniel told reporters . “That’s never lost on teammates when you have an extensive injury that happens in-season so then you are finishing the season rehabbing. “The offseason program, they’re watching them rehab. Keira Grace Madder, 17, better known by her stage name 'KG Crown,' announced her departure from the group over the weekend by filing a lawsuit against her label, JYP USA, which is a subsidiary of the South Korean entertainment company JYP Entertainment. The suit makes a number of explosive allegations against the label, claiming that KG suffered from child labor exploitation, unfair business practices, and food and water restrictions , according to Forbes . The Los Angeles-based singer also alleges physical and emotional distress and says that she was put in 'an environment that encourages eating disorders and has caused [VCHA] members to self-harm.' One of the most shocking allegations in the lawsuit was that one of the members had attempted suicide. She also claimed that she worked more than 12 hours a day for just $500 per week, which is below California 's minimum wage, and that she was put into over $500,000 of 'trainee debt' with JYP USA. Other allegations included rigorous rehearsals that resulted in injuries, as well as being pressured to rehearse while sick and being denied water on occasion.
