Liverpool is 100% on top of the Champions League after dumping title holder Real Madrid into an almost unbelievable 24th place in the 36-team standings on Wednesday. No one felt the embarrassment of Madrid’s 2-0 loss at Anfield more than Kylian Mbappé, the superstar added in the offseason by the storied club that also was European champion against Liverpool in the finals of 2022 and 2018. Mbappé had a penalty saved in the second half and was earlier dumped on his behind by Conor Bradley’s superb tackle in an instant viral moment. Only Liverpool has started the new Champions League format with five wins and first-year coach Arne Slot's team is two points clear of Inter Milan. Barcelona is third, trailing Liverpool by three points. Madrid is, remarkably, with three rounds left just one place above being eliminated. The top eight teams at the end of January go direct to the round of 16 in March, and teams placed from ninth to 24th enter a round of two-leg playoffs in February. “(This) doesn’t change much, because even with a win it was going to be tough to secure a top-eight finish,” Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti said. ”It was a fair result." Monaco missed a chance to go second in the table, giving up a lead playing with 10 men from the 58th minute in a 3-2 loss at home to Benfica. Swiss forward Zeki Amdouni scored the winning goal in the 88th. Borussia Dortmund, the beaten finalist against Madrid in May, is up to fourth place after beating Dinamo Zagreb 3-0. Champions League standout Jamie Gittens now has four goals in five games, curling a rising shot in the 41st to open the scoring in Croatia. The best comeback was at PSV Eindhoven, where the home team trailed Shakhtar Donetsk by two goals in the 87th minute before a 3-2 win was sealed by United States forward Ricardo Pepi’s goal deep in stoppage time. US defender Cameron Carter-Vickers scored an embarrassing own goal for Celtic — playing a no-look pass far beyond goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel — in a 1-1 draw with Club Brugge. “One of those things,” Schmeichel said. “Cam gets pressed and he hasn’t heard me shout that I’m not in (goal).” Congo teammates Ngal’Ayel Mukau and Silas impressed in wins for Lille and Red Star Belgrade. Mukau scored twice in 12th-place Lille’s 2-1 win at Bologna and Silas leveled for Red Star in a 5-1 rout of Stuttgart, though he barely celebrated his goal. Silas is on loan with the Serbian champion from Stuttgart. Aston Villa's 0-0 draw with Juventus was preserved by an excellent save by Emiliano Martinez , the World Cup-winning Argentina goalkeeper, diving low to push away a header from Francisco Conceição. Liverpool’s stand-in right back Bradley was a standout Wednesday, denying Mbappé at high speed in a signature defensive play in the 32nd. The 21-year-old Northern Ireland defender, deputizing for fit-again Trent Alexander-Arnold, joined the attack in the 52nd to play a key pass returning the ball to Alexis Mac Allister who scored the opening goal. After Mbappé’s penalty was pushed away by goalkeeper Caoimhín Kelleher in the 61st, Liverpool star Mo Salah missed with his spot-kick in the 70th, before substitute Cody Gakpo sealed the win with a header in the 77th. Madrid now has lost three of five games after defeats at Lille and at home to AC Milan. The record 15-time European champion has another tough trip next, at fifth-place Atalanta on Dec. 10. On the same date, Liverpool is at 30th-place Girona and looks to be cruising into the round of 16. “You know how special it is to play against a team that has won the Champions League so many times," Liverpool coach Slot said of Madrid. “They were a pain for Liverpool for many years too.” Red Star Belgrade and Sturm Graz ended four-game losing runs to get their first points and wins. Red Star rallied against Stuttgart after the German team led in the fifth minute. The 1991 European Cup winner’s goal to level the game in the 12th was scored by on-loan Silas. He held up his hands as if in apology as part of a low-key celebration. Sturm Graz won 1-0 against Girona, the Spanish newcomer to European competitions. It was the Austrian champion’s first Champions League game since coach Christian Ilzer left to join Hoffenheim. AP soccer: https://apnews.com/hub/soccer

Alleging that electronic voting machines (EVMs) were hacked selectively in the Maharashtra Assembly elections, Home Minister G. Parameshwara on Sunday said his party leaders were surprised over the information that they got about “EVM hacking”. Dr. Parameshwara, who was also the AICC observer for Maharashtra elections, told presspersons that his party leaders, including former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, discussed the EVM issues and were planning to appeal to the Election Commission of India (ECI) in this regard. “We are now sure that till the EVMs are used, there is no hope for the Congress or any other party other than the BJP. There is an urgent need to return to ballot papers,” he said. “On analysing the poor performance of the Congress and the Maha Vikas Aghadi in Maharashtra on Saturday, we found surprising information about EVMs being hacked selectively. They are not doing this in every constituency but in large States that are politically and financially important for them,” he said. “Although we have appealed to the Election Commission about this in the past too, they did not consider our request on the need to return to ballot papers. When the Supreme Court and the ECI do not accept our allegations, where do we go?” he said, pointing out that many foreign countries, including the U.S., have done away with EVMs. Published - November 24, 2024 09:11 pm IST Copy link Email Facebook Twitter Telegram LinkedIn WhatsApp Reddit Maharashtra Assembly Elections 2024 / Indian National CongressNone

Facebook Twitter WhatsApp SMS Email Print Copy article link Save GALLOWAY TOWNSHIP — The state Department of Transportation is interested in installing a mid-block crosswalk in front of the Smithville Inn on Route 9. “We are in the beginning stages of this. I did speak to the senator’s (Vincent J. Polistina, R-Atlantic) office, and what we would need to do next is generate a letter requesting a speed limit reduction and a mid-block crosswalk and any other request that we might have to the Department of Transportation,” said Councilman Tony DiPietro during Tuesday’s Township Council meeting. Mayor Anthony Coppola is the Smithville Inn’s vice president of operations and a partner in the Historic Towne of Smithville. Coppola said he has been lobbying for the crosswalk for a while. “I almost gave up hope on it,” Coppola said during the Nov. 12 council meeting. “It can be pretty treacherous crossing Route 9 up there, especially during the holiday season and the summer season when people are up and around Smithville.” What does Spirit Airlines' bankruptcy mean for Atlantic City International Airport? Citing a need to see how pending cannabis applications will affect life in the township, the seven-member Galloway Township Council voted unanimously Tuesday to enact a one-year moratorium on the issuance of local letters of support for cannabis businesses. “This would hopefully make it a much safer access for people to cross over on Route 9. Fingers crossed that this will happen, but we are in preliminary talks with the Department of Transportation to hopefully get this done. I know it’s been long overdue. I received a lot of emails in the past regarding it,” DiPietro said during the Nov. 12 meeting. With additional housing, people and traffic, the community continues to grow as it is one of the more desirable spots in the township to live, Coppola said. “People want to cross the street there,” Coppola said Nov. 12. “They are going to CVS. They are going to the dollar store. They are going to Wawa. They are going to Smithville. They are going back and forth. Kids are riding their bikes.” There is parking in an empty lot across from the Smithville Inn and the Historic Towne of Smithville on Route 9, even more reason for people to want to cross the street mid-block. “There has been at least one fatality there in the past couple of years, and we have had several other incidents. ... We have been lobbying for that as business owners, and I’m glad to see the state has finally taken a look at that,” Coppola said. The Historic Towne of Smithville put signage up to direct people not to cross mid-block and to walk to the corner of Route 9 and Moss Mill Road, where there is a sanctioned crosswalk and activated light buttons, but people take the path of least resistance and cross the street mid-block, Coppola said. “It’s wide open. It’s a rural stretch of Route 9. People get off the (Garden State) Parkway going 80, and they get on Route 9 South going 70,” Coppola said Nov. 12. “You go into New Gretna and some of these other little places along Route 9, which is a state highway, and the speed is reduced. There is no reason why they couldn’t do it here.” Coppola Contact Vincent Jackson: 609-272-7202 vjackson@pressofac.com Twitter@ACPressJackson Get Government & Politics updates in your inbox! MALAGA, Spain (AP) — No. 1-ranked Jannik Sinner won matches in singles and doubles to lead defending champion Italy to a 2-1 comeback victory over Argentina on Thursday, earning a return trip to the Davis Cup semifinals. “I’m here trying to do the best I can in the singles,” Sinner said. “If they put me on the court in doubles, I’ll also try my best.” On Saturday, Italy will face Australia in a rematch of last year's final, but this time it will only be for a chance to play for the championship. Australia eliminated the U.S. 2-1 earlier Thursday to reach the final four at the team competition for the third consecutive year. The other semifinal, to be contested Friday, is the Netherlands against Germany. The Dutch got past Rafael Nadal and Spain in the quarterfinals earlier in the week, sending the 22-time Grand Slam champion into retirement. Italy fell behind 1-0 in the quarterfinals when Argentina’s Francisco Cerúndolo defeated Lorenzo Musetti 6-4, 6-1 on an indoor hard court at the Palacio de Deportes Jose Maria Martina Carpena in southern Spain. But then in stepped Sinner, whose season already includes two Grand Slam trophies — at the Australian Open and U.S. Open — plus the title at the ATP Finals last weekend in Turin, Italy. First he overwhelmed Sebastián Báez 6-2, 6-1. Then Sinner teamed with 2021 Wimbledon runner-up Matteo Berrettini in the deciding doubles match to win 6-4, 7-5 against Andres Molteni and Maximo Gonzalez. “He carried me today,” Sinner said about Berrettini. After arriving late to Malaga from Turin, Sinner did not get a chance to practice on the Davis Cup competition court before taking on Báez and stretching his streak to 22 sets won in a row. “In three minutes, he was perfectly comfortable on court,” Italy captain Filippo Volandri said. “He’s a special one.” Volandri swapped out his original doubles team, Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori, for Sinner and Berrettini, and the change paid dividends. Australia, the Davis Cup runner-up the last two years, advanced when Matt Ebden and Jordan Thompson beat the surprise, last-minute American pairing of Ben Shelton and Tommy Paul 6-4, 6-4 in that quarterfinal's deciding doubles match. The Shelton-Paul substitution for Paris Olympics silver medalists Austin Krajicek and Rajeev Ram was announced about 15 minutes before the doubles match began. Ebden and John Peers beat Krajicek and Ram in the Summer Games final in August. The Australians broke once in each set of the doubles. In the second, they stole one of Shelton’s service games on the fourth break opportunity when Ebden’s overhead smash made it 5-4. Thompson then served out the victory, closing it with a service winner before chest-bumping Ebden. The 21st-ranked Shelton made his Davis Cup debut earlier Thursday in singles against 77th-ranked Thanasi Kokkinakis, who emerged from a tight-as-can-be tiebreaker by saving four match points and eventually converting his seventh to win 6-1, 4-6, 7-6 (14). No. 4 Taylor Fritz , the U.S. Open runner-up, then pulled the Americans even with a far more straightforward victory over No. 9 Alex de Minaur , 6-3, 6-4. When their match finally ended, on a backhand by Shelton that landed long, Kokkinakis dropped onto his back and pounded his chest. After he rose, he threw a ball into the stands, then walked over to Australia’s sideline, spiked his racket and yelled, before hugging captain Lleyton Hewitt. “I don’t know if I’ve been that pumped up in my life. I wanted that for my team,” said Kokkinakis, who won the 2022 Australian Open men’s doubles title with Nick Kyrgios. “It could have gone either way, but I kept my nerve.” AP tennis: https://apnews.com/hub/tennisNone

2025 mayoral challengers attack Andrew Cuomo amid fresh reports he will soon enter the frayThe IPL 2025 Auction took place at the Abadi Al Johar Arena in Jeddah on Sunday, with team owners and representatives bidding for players. As the paddles flew and cameras flashed, one face caught everyone's attention online. Yes, the internet has found its new IPL girl, and this time, it’s Jahnavi Mehta. Who Is The KKR Girl? Sharing her photo from the auction, a netizen asked, "Is she Juhi Chawla's daughter?" Another tweet read, "Is that girl in KKR bidding unit Juhi Chawla's daughter or something? Looks like her." "Who's the girl sitting in KKR table? She looks damn cute," gushed a person. After finding her name, an X user tweeted, "Jahnavi Mehta Instagram id? All About Jahnavi Mehta Jahnavi Mehta is the daughter of actress Juhi Chawla and Jay Mehta, who are co-owners of Kolkata Knight Riders. This is the second time she represented the team on behalf of her parents. She first grabbed eyeballs in 2022 when she sat beside Shah Rukh Khan's kids Aryan Khan and Suhana Khan for the auction. At the event, Juhi had called the three kids 'the present' of their team (KKR) and 'not just the future'. Jahnavi, along with Aryan and Suhana, was seen at the 2022 Indian Premier League (IPL) auction ceremony, where all three represented their parents. Jahnavi has graduated from the prestigious Columbia University in New York. According to her mom, this young KKR girl is a cricket buff and the knowledge of the sport "comes naturally" to her. In 2022, Juhi called Jahnavi and actor SRK's children 'the present and the future' of their team. When asked if they are the future of KKR, the actress had replied, “Not just the future, they are the present of the team. It is very funny how there was a time when our kids would be at home and we would be on the screen. Suddenly, it was the other way around because I was home watching my daughter on-screen. It was beautiful. God bless her, Aryan and Suhana. I wish them all the best.” Jahnavi does have an Instagram profile, but she prefers to stay away from social media and rarely posts anything on the platform. Currently, she is not interested in making her debut in Bollywood.
