ROME — Oneida County Executive Anthony J. Picente made a last minute stop to Connected Community Schools in Rome Monday morning to drop off several barrels of donated toys for Connect-A-Kid before Christmas. Hundreds of families in need have visited the organization on North James Street this holiday season to pick up two stocking stuffers and two bigger presents per child. Connect-A-Kid was open until early Monday afternoon, and will have someone on call on Tuesday — Christmas Eve — for any last minute gift emergencies. Picente brought gifts donated over the past several weeks as part of Oneida County’s annual toy drive among its employees. “Every year, the Oneida County employees pick a charity to give gifts to at Christmas time for those in need, and this year we chose Rome Connected Community Schools,” said Picente. “We’re here to present ... just a whole truckload of various items for the kids that are in need, and families. It ranges from toys to clothes to other things.” Connected Community Schools has been gathering gifts from multiple organizations and individuals from around the area since early November. “We are so thankful for Anthony Picente and Oneida County for their donation this holiday season,” said Gretchen Neel, director of public relations for Community Connected Schools. “These toys will get distributed out to families in need this holiday season. The holiday is approaching, so we’re hoping, any family, please reach out to us.” To “shop” the shelves at Connected Community Schools, families who are within a Connected school district can reach out to their own site coordinator, call 315-272-7498 or visit www.connectedcommunityschools.org and fill out a self-referral form. STATE COLLEGE — Penn State is going to the Big Ten championship game. The Nittany Lions secured their spot in the conference title game after beating Maryland, 44-7, and getting some help with Michigan upsetting Ohio State on a wild Saturday. Penn State, currently No. 4 in the College Football Playoff rankings, will play No. 1 Oregon next Saturday at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis for the Big Ten championship. The game will kick off at 8 p.m. and air nationally on CBS. With a win, either Penn State or Oregon will secure a first-round bye into the CFP quarterfinals in the new 12-team bracket and, possibly, the No. 1 overall seed. With a loss, Penn State would still be expected to make the CFP. And unless the Nittany Lions get blown out by the Ducks, they would still likely host a first-round game at Beaver Stadium . Penn State entered Saturday with a slim chance of getting into the Big Ten championship. Ohio State just needed to beat Michigan as a three-touchdown favorite to secure a spot in Indy. But in embarrassing fashion, the Buckeyes lost, 13-10, at home to the Wolverines. Ohio State quarterback Will Howard threw two interceptions, kicker Jayden Fielding missed two field goals, and Michigan’s Dominic Zvada converted a go-ahead field goal with 45 seconds left. The Buckeyes failed to tie it up, and Ryan Day lost his fourth straight game to Michigan. That result gave Penn State clarity going into its 3:30 p.m. kick against Maryland. A win would put the Nittany Lions into Ohio State’s vacated slot thanks to the Big Ten’s tiebreakers. Even if Indiana, the other one-loss team in the Big Ten, beats Purdue on Saturday night, the Nittany Lions advance to the Big Ten title game on the conference’s fourth head-to-head tiebreaker: cumulative opponent conference record. Oregon will be the toughest test of the season so far for the Nittany Lions. The Ducks are the last undefeated team in college football with wins over Ohio State and Boise State. It will be a massive opportunity for James Franklin , Drew Allar and the Nittany Lions to prove themselves against the nation’s No. 1 team. We’ll see how they fare next Saturday. ESPN announcers Joe Buck and Troy Aikman aren’t fans of the way some people have been talking about the new 12-team College Football Playoff . Notre Dame, Penn State, Texas and Ohio State all won their opening-round matchups with relative ease, leaving some to complain about the way the new format has shaken out. Fellow ESPNer Kirk Herbstreit at one point said that Indiana “was not a team that should’ve been on that field” after they were soundly beaten by the Fighting Irish. But Buck and Aikman did not feel the same and the pair defended the way things have gone this year in the CFP during a break in the action between the Packers and Saints on “Monday Night Football.” “I think the disappointment is for those that want to question whether those teams belonged in the playoff,” Aikman said. “I think to make those comments after the fact and after they had devastating losses by the amount that they did — I don’t know that that’s fair to anybody. We see teams in the Super Bowl that lose by large margins. And they were worthy. So, hat’s off to those winners and really all those teams — whether they lost last week or not.” Buck, who is an Indiana alum, chimed in on the topic as well and said the negative chatter didn’t diminish how “awfully proud” alumni of Indiana are after the year they’ve had. “And I think what it does is it diminishes the job that the teams that won did,” Buck said. “Like in the case of Notre Dame or Penn State and the job that they did in winning those games. I mean, it’s sports. And not everybody shows up with their A-game every night. But it’s been a fun collegiate season. Buck compared the conversation to the one that fans have during March Madness each year and the complaints some fans end up having about who made it and who did not. “I guess, you know, you can put 100 teams in there and there will still be someone upset about it,” Buck added. The College Football Playoff resumes on New Year’s Eve when No. 6 Penn State battles No. 3 Boise State.

Fox News’ Brooke Singman reports on Trump’s latest Cabinet pick after Matt Gaetz withdraws his attorney general nomination. Tune out the noise and know this: former Florida attorney general Pam Bondi is the force we need to fix the Department of Justice, and Americans can rest assured that weaponizing any part of our nation’s criminal justice system will soon come to a decisive end. Strong, intelligent and a dear friend and colleague, Bondi is a litigator I’ve always respected and admired. She served as Florida’s first AG for eight years after a successful 18 years as a county prosecutor where she followed the rule of law and actively listened to constituents who wanted strong and safe communities. As a former Democrat, she witnessed first-hand the elitism and divisive politics from grassroots to national policy before switching to the GOP in 2000. Bondi championed anti-human-trafficking legislation while helping to bring the issue into the national spotlight, and she justifiably demanded the Department of Justice be diligent and transparent in their investigations of Hunter Biden. 1.4 MILLION ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS IN US HAVE BEEN ORDERED DEPORTED, BUT HAVE YET TO BE REMOVED: OFFICIAL I have great confidence that Bondi and President-elect Donald Trump recognize that the hallmark of justice is the equal application of the law, and that this month’s "red sweep" of the election is evidence that voters want politicians to stop the rhetoric and solve problems. Former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi is Trump's new pick as AG. FILE: Bondi stands on stage in an empty Mellon Auditorium while addressing the Republican National Convention on August 25, 2020, in Washington, DC. (Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images) When it comes to conservative criminal justice solutions, any crime rate data is meaningless if Americans don’t feel safe. One victim or any single crime-riddled community is one too many. And with the permeation of social media, all of it feels imminent to our own families and neighborhoods. While some Republicans are reacting to constituents' fears with knee-jerk, ineffective tough-on-crime policies, history has shown us, responding to crime with overly punitive policies doesn’t make any of us safer. As a former U.S. attorney, I worked closely with the Trump administration to help craft and pass the landmark, bipartisan 2018 First Step Act, and I can tell you that thoughtful, conservative criminal justice solutions work. CLICK HERE FOR MORE FOX NEWS OPINION Through improved federal prison programming, targeted sentencing reforms, and other First Step Act directives, public safety has improved. Of the 44,000 individuals released from federal prison under the First Step Act, only 9.7% have been rearrested or reconvicted — an incredible improvement from 46.2% prior to 2018. Just as the name implies, this landmark law was a first step for Trump and other conservative criminal justice advocates to use smart on crime policy solutions to improve public safety. Conservatives can build on that success by promoting thoughtful conservative policy ideas in our states, counties and at the federal level. No matter what your party affiliation, we can all agree that one victim is one too many and that criminals must be held accountable. Haphazardly creating new crimes or stiffer sentencing do not deter individual criminals — rather, it is the predictability of being caught that deters individuals from committing a crime. Further, boots-on-the-ground law enforcement in every capacity needs our support and resources. When forces are stretched too thin with outdated technology and policies, it’s no surprise that only 57.8% of murders and 26.9% of rapes are being solved. Victims deserve better. CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP As a former U.S. attorney, I worked closely with the Trump administration to help craft and pass the landmark, bipartisan 2018 First Step Act, and I can tell you that thoughtful, conservative criminal justice solutions work. As America’s next attorney general, Bondi will empower Americans to work together to find solutions to solve criminal justice problems unique to their own communities and to stand their ground against any attempted weaponization of our justice system. With Pam Bondi at the helm, the DOJ is on notice that transparency and an equal application of the law is non-negotiable. And with that, conservatives have a real opportunity to be the grown-ups in the room and create criminal justice solutions that are equitable for all Americans today and for generations to come. Its decentralized approach to social networking was eventually intended to replace Twitter’s core mechanic . That’s unlikely now that the two companies have parted ways. But Bluesky’s growth trajectory — with a user base that has more than doubled since October — could make it a serious competitor to other social platforms. But with growth comes growing pains. It’s not just human users who’ve been flocking to Bluesky but also bots, including those designed to create partisan division or direct users to junk websites. The skyrocketing user base — now surpassing 25 million — is the biggest test yet for a relatively young platform that has branded itself as a social media alternative free of the problems plaguing its competitors. According to research firm Similarweb, Bluesky added 7.6 million monthly active app users on iOS and Android in November, an increase of 295.4% since October. It also saw 56.2 million desktop and mobile web visits, in the same period, up 189% from October. Besides the U.S. elections, Bluesky also got a boost when X was briefly banned in Brazil . “They got this spike in attention, they’ve crossed the threshold where it is now worth it for people to flood the platform with spam,” said Laura Edelson, an assistant professor of computer science at Northeastern University and a member of Issue One’s Council for Responsible Social Media. “But they don’t have the cash flow, they don’t have the established team that a larger platform would, so they have to do it all very, very quickly.” To manage growth for its tiny staff, Bluesky started as an invitation-only space until it opened to the public in February. That period gave the site time to build out moderation tools and other distinctive features to attract new users , such as “starter packs” that provide lists of topically curated feeds. Meta recently announced that it is testing a similar feature. Compared to the bigger players like Meta’s platforms or X, Bluesky has a “quite different” value system, said Claire Wardle, a professor at Cornell University and an expert in misinformation. This includes giving users more control over their experience. “The first generation of social media platforms connected the world, but ended up consolidating power in the hands of a few corporations and their leaders,” Bluesky said on its blog in March. “Our online experience doesn’t have to depend on billionaires unilaterally making decisions over what we see. On an open social network like Bluesky, you can shape your experience for yourself.” Because of this mindset, Bluesky has achieved a scrappy underdog status that has attracted users who’ve grown tired of the big players. “People had this idea that it was going to be a different type of social network,” Wardle said. “But the truth is, when you get lots of people in a place and there are eyeballs, it means that it’s in other people’s interests to use bots to create, you know, information that aligns with their perspective.” Little data has emerged to help quantify the rise in impersonator accounts, artificial intelligence-fueled networks and other potentially harmful content on Bluesky. But in recent weeks, users have begun reporting large numbers of apparent AI bots following them, posting plagiarized articles or making seemingly automated divisive comments in replies. Lion Cassens, a Bluesky user and doctoral candidate in the Netherlands, found one such network by accident — a group of German-language accounts with similar bios and AI-generated profile pictures posting in replies to three German newspapers. “I noticed some weird replies under a news post by the German newspaper ‘Die Ziet,’” he said in an email to The Associated Press. “I have a lot of trust in the moderation mechanism on Bluesky, especially compared to Twitter since the layoffs and due to Musk’s more radical stance on freedom of speech. But AI bots are a big challenge, as they will only improve. I hope social media can keep up with that.” Cassens said the bots’ messages have been relatively innocuous so far, but he was concerned about how they could be repurposed in the future to mislead. There are also signs that foreign disinformation narratives have made their way to Bluesky. The disinformation research group Alethea pointed to one low-traction post sharing a false claim about ABC News that had circulated on Russian Telegram channels. Copycat accounts are another challenge. In late November, Alexios Mantzarlis, director of the Security, Trust and Safety Initiative at Cornell Tech, found that of the top 100 most followed named individuals on Bluesky, 44% had at least one duplicate account posing as them. Two weeks later, Mantzarlis said Bluesky had removed around two-thirds of the duplicate accounts he’d initially detected — a sign the site was aware of the issue and attempting to address it. Bluesky posted earlier this month that it had quadrupled its moderation team to keep up with its growing user base. The company also announced it had introduced a new system to detect impersonation and was working to improve its Community Guidelines to provide more detail on what’s allowed. Because of the way the site is built, users also have the option to subscribe to third-party “Labelers” that outsource content moderation by tagging accounts with warnings and context. The company didn’t respond to multiple requests for comment for this story. Even as its challenges aren’t yet at the scale other platforms face, Bluesky is at a “crossroads,” said Edward Perez, a board member at the nonpartisan nonprofit OSET Institute, who previously led Twitter’s civic integrity team. “Whether BlueSky likes it or not, it is being pulled into the real world,” Perez said, noting that it needs to quickly prioritize threats and work to mitigate them if it hopes to continue to grow. That said, disinformation and bots won’t be Bluesky’s only challenges in the months and years to come. As a text-based social network, its entire premise is falling out of favor with younger generations. A recent Pew Research Center poll found that only 17% of American teenagers used X, for instance, down from 23% in 2022. For teens and young adults, TikTok, Instagram and other visual-focused platforms are the places to be. Political polarization is also going against Bluesky ever reaching the size of TikTok, Instagram or even X. “Bluesky is not trying to be all things to all people,” Wardle said, adding that, likely, the days of a Facebook or Instagram emerging where they’re “trying to keep everybody happy” are over. Social platforms are increasingly splintered along political lines and when they aren’t — see Meta’s platforms — the companies behind them are actively working to de-emphasize political content and news.
