Scanlan: Time for legislators to protect women
The minority SNP administration needs MSPs from at least one opposition party to either back or abstain in the vote on its spending plans in order to get them passed. The LibDem leader confirmed talks had taken place about the price of his party’s support – believed to include a £140 million ferry deal – but made it clear they would actively vote against any spending plans that promoted independence. Finance Secretary Shona Robison (below) will deliver the Scottish Government's Budget at Holyrood on December 4. Speaking to the BBC Scotland's Sunday Show, Cole-Hamilton said the public had sent the SNP a "clear message" in the recent General Election that they are "done with the constitution". He said: "I don’t see a circumstance where any Liberal Democrat could vote for a Budget that is clearly spending money on the constitution. READ MORE: Labour pledge to cut 'bulging benefits bill' to 'get Britain working' "I think that would be a massive misuse of public funds no matter how small. "We need every penny available spent on our schools, on our GP surgeries, on the mental health crisis." Cole-Hamilton (below) added: "The SNP will have to go a long way to persuade us, that whilst they might delete things like any independence spending from their budget that they won’t just go back to their old ways of spending any political oxygen on the constitution.” Asked by host Martin Geissler about whether LibDem MSPs might abstain, which would allow the Budget to pass despite containing money promoting independence, he said he would vote it down and "that is where we would be". Meanwhile, the Scottish Greens have said they will only back the Budget if no cuts to independence spending are made . We told how the Tories have demanded almost £1 billion in tax cuts from the Budget , although party leader Russell Findlay conceded that the plans were “unlikely” to be accepted. The SNP have been contacted for comment.
After an emotional 2024 season, four-time major champion Rory McIlroy seems to be enjoying some time off. The golfer was recently spotted at the Las Vegas Grand Prix qualifying on Friday as he hung out with the Alpine F1 team. Last year, McIlroy expanded his net worth by investing in the Alpine F1 team. He would join other notable athletes such as Anthony Joshua , Patrick Mahomes , Travis Kelce , Trent Alexander-Arnold , and Juan Moto to invest in this sport. At that time, the golfer claimed he was a big fan of F1 and claimed golf could “ learn ” a bit from F1 in terms of some of the set-up stuff. At the Las Vegas Grand Prix, he was seen spending time in the Alpine garage before the race on Saturday. ️ #PHOTOS — Rory McIlroy, an @AlpineF1Team investor is in Vegas for Las Vegas Grand Prix. @TrackingRory pic.twitter.com/WnXx3Y6q4s In the qualifying race, Pierre Gasly secured third place on the grid while Esteban Ocon took 11th place. Unfortunately, they were unable to keep up the momentum on Saturday night. Gasly had to retire from the race and got a did not finish result, whereas Ocon came in 17th place. George Russell clinched the Las Vegas Grand Prix with an amazing performance while Max Verstappen claimed his fourth world title . Rory McIlroy offers first glimpse of TGL simulator ahead of inaugural 2025 season The 2025 season will be an important one for Rory McIlroy . While he will resume his chase for a fifth major championship, one of his projects will also kick-off. The TGL Golf owned by McIlroy and Tiger Woods will kick off in January next year. Ahead of this anticipated event, McIlroy offered the first glimpse of the TGL simulator. In a video shared by the Boston Common Golf, the team of McIlroy, the North Irishman could be seen describing the hole and called the pools cool. Poles are cool . Poles are really cool. So this is a hole called Quick Draw, the welling design. It’s got this canyon that sticks out. It’s about a 300-yard carry, but downhill, about seven feet, no wind right now ... Like Bo says, he says this is like a par four and a half going this way. It’s like a par five and a half going this way. It’s like 700 yards all the way around He would later try out several shots and seemed impressed with his shots and the technology. Nice fly but definitely yeah, it’s very realistic. They will take part in five regular matches with their first game being against Woods’ Jupiter Links Golf Club. The TGL was originally scheduled to take place in January 2024. However, damages to their roof last year saw the event being delayed by one year. This article first appeared on FirstSportz and was syndicated with permission.
LONDON — A woman who claimed mixed martial arts fighter Conor McGregor "brutally raped and battered" her in a Dublin hotel penthouse was awarded nearly 250,000 Euros ($257,000) on Friday by a civil court jury in Ireland. Nikita Hand said the Dec. 9, 2018, assault after a night of partying left her heavily bruised and suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. McGregor testified that he never forced the woman to do anything against her will and said she fabricated the allegations after the two had consensual sex. His lawyer had called Hand a gold digger. The fighter, once the face of the Ultimate Fighting Championship but now past his prime, shook his head as the jury of eight women and four men found him liable for assault after deliberating about six hours in the High Court in Dublin. He was mobbed by cameras as he left court but did not comment. He later said on the social platform X that he would appeal the verdict and the "modest award." People are also reading... Hand's voice cracked and her hands trembled as she read a statement outside the courthouse, saying she would never forget what happened to her but would now be able to move on with her life. She thanked her family, partner, friends, jurors, the judge and all the supporters that had reached out to her online, but particularly her daughter. "She has given me so much strength and courage over the last six years throughout this nightmare to keep on pushing forward for justice," she said. "I want to show (her) and every other girl and boy that you can stand up for yourself if something happens to you, no matter who the person is, and justice will be served." The Associated Press generally does not name alleged victims of sexual violence unless they come forward publicly, as Hand has done. Under Irish law, she did not have the anonymity she would have been granted in a criminal proceeding and was named publicly throughout the trial. Her lawyer told jurors that McGregor was angry about a fight he had lost in Las Vegas two months earlier and took it out on his client. "He's not a man, he's a coward," attorney John Gordon said in his closing speech. "A devious coward and you should treat him for what he is." Gordon said his client never pretended to be a saint and was only looking to have fun when she sent McGregor a message through Instagram after attending a Christmas party. He said Hand knew McGregor socially and that they had grown up in the same area. She said he picked her and a friend up in a car and shared cocaine with them, which McGregor admitted in court, on the way to the Beacon Hotel. Hand said she told McGregor she didn't want to have sex with him and that she was menstruating. She said she told him "no" as he started kissing her but he eventually pinned her to a bed and she couldn't move. McGregor put her in a chokehold and later told her, "now you know how I felt in the octagon where I tapped out three times," referring to a UFC match when he had to admit defeat, she said. Hand had to take several breaks in emotional testimony over three days. She said McGregor threatened to kill her during the encounter and she feared she would never see her young daughter again. Eventually, he let go of her. "I remember saying I was sorry, as I felt that I did something wrong and I wanted to reassure him that I wouldn't tell anyone so he wouldn't hurt me again," she testified. She said she then let him do what he wanted and he had sex with her. A paramedic who examined Hand the next day testified that she had never before seen someone with that intensity of bruising. A doctor told jurors Hand had multiple injuries. Hand said the trauma of the attack had left her unable to work as a hairdresser, she fell behind on her mortgage and had to move out of her house. Police investigated the woman's complaint but prosecutors declined to bring charges, saying there was insufficient evidence and a conviction was unlikely. McGregor, in his post on X, said he was disappointed jurors didn't see all the evidence prosecutors had reviewed. He testified that the two had athletic and vigorous sex, but that it was not rough. He said "she never said 'no' or stopped" and testified that everything she said was a lie. "It is a full blown lie among many lies," he said when asked about the chokehold allegation. "How anyone could believe that me, as a prideful person, would highlight my shortcomings." McGregor's lawyer told jurors they had to set aside their animus toward the fighter. "You may have an active dislike of him, some of you may even loathe him – there is no point pretending that the situation might be otherwise," attorney Remy Farrell said. "I'm not asking you to invite him to Sunday brunch." The defense said the woman never told investigators McGregor threatened her life. They also showed surveillance video in court that they said appeared to show the woman kiss McGregor's arm and hug him after they left the hotel room. Farrell said she looked "happy, happy, happy." McGregor said he was "beyond petrified" when first questioned by police and read them a prepared statement. On the advice of his lawyer, he refused to answer more than 100 follow-up questions. The jury ruled against Hand in a case she brought against one of McGregor's friends, James Lawrence, whom she accused of having sex with her in the hotel without consent. Older siblings everywhere could appreciate John Harbaugh's refusal to concede an inch against his younger brother Jim. Even when his Baltimore Ravens faced fourth down in the second quarter, John wasn't giving up the ball without a fight. The Ravens converted that fourth down and two others on their way to over the Los Angeles Chargers on Monday night, giving their coach a third victory in three matchups against his brother. It was the first time they'd faced off since Baltimore beat San Francisco — then coached by Jim Harbaugh — in the Super Bowl at the end of the 2012 season. “We grew up in the same room and have always lived our life side by side, but that’s not what the game is about,” John Harbaugh said. “The game really is about the players, and the players are always going to win the game or lose the game or whatever.” On this night, it was Baltimore's players who shined. Specifically Derrick Henry, who rushed for 140 yards. Lamar Jackson threw a couple of touchdown passes, and the defense was solid, allowing touchdowns on the first and last Los Angeles drives but not much in between. “I’m proud of our guys,” John Harbaugh said. “I’m proud of the way they came out and responded after the first 10 points — we were down 10-0, and our guys stepped up.” After converting fourth-and-1 at their 16 late in the second quarter, the Ravens scored on a 40-yard pass from Jackson to Rashod Bateman, taking the lead for good at 14-10. Baltimore's other two fourth-and-1 conversions came on a 14-play touchdown drive that spanned the end of the third quarter and start of the fourth. “We’re just confident that we’ll end up converting on those fourth downs, and we did a great job blocking,” said Henry, who converted the last two of the fourth downs. "All we had to do was make a play, and we did.” The Ravens got back to their identity a bit, rushing for 212 yards. And it wasn't just Henry and Jackson contributing. Justice Hill broke free for a 51-yard touchdown that made it 30-16 in the fourth. “Nobody wants to stand in front of (Derrick Henry) every single play, every single run,” Hill said. "You can do it one time, two times, three times, but when you have to do it 20 to 25 times, it starts to wear down. I’m glad we stuck with the run game this game, and it played out for us.” There were still too many penalties, with the Ravens flagged nine times for 102 yards. Baltimore played a pretty clean game until the fourth quarter, so several of those flags came after the Ravens had the game reasonably under control, but this is still an area of concern. With star linebacker Roquan Smith out because of a hamstring injury, Malik Harrison led the Ravens with a dozen tackles. “It’s a lot of people that doubted me coming into this game, so I’m happy I was able to ball out and show them that I can be in this league, and I can play at a high level,” Harrison said. There was a time when Isaiah Likely seemed as if he might be supplanting Mark Andrews as Baltimore's top tight end threat, but Likely went without a catch Monday. He did, however, recover the onside kick that effectively ended the game. Although Smith was out, DT Travis Jones (ankle) and C Tyler Linderbaum (back) were able to start. Jackson has now thrown 22 touchdown passes with no interceptions on Monday nights, with a passer rating of 124.3. The Ravens have one more game before their open date, and it's a showdown this weekend against a Philadelphia team that has won seven in a row. Saquon Barkley (1,392) of the Eagles and Henry (1,325) have both surpassed 1,300 yards rushing already. Nobody else in the NFL has more than 1,000. AP NFL:Ruby red cranberries have brightened holiday tables for centuries in traditional cranberry sauce, relish, dessert — even fanciful centerpieces. Native to North America, cranberries have long been used by Native Americans as fabric dye, medicine and food. According to folklore, Native Americans gave cranberries to the Pilgrims to be served at the first Thanksgiving in 1621. Cranberries were used to fight infections, and it turns out those same plant compounds are what help prevent urinary tract infections today. A rich source of vitamin C, they were also used to prevent scurvy. We should be enjoying cranberries, packed with nutrients and powerful plant compounds, all year. The cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon), brilliant red and tart, is related to the blueberry, lingonberry and huckleberry. The U.S. is the largest producer of the world’s cranberries, of which only 5% are sold fresh. Low in calories and low in sugar, 1 cup of this tart berry packs 22% of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Daily Value of antioxidant vitamin C and 18% of the Daily Value of dietary fiber, which helps control blood sugar. Cranberries get their crimson color from anthocyanins, one of many plant compounds beneficial to health. Notable plant chemicals in cranberries, including anthocyanins, procyanidins and flavonols, may play a role in cancer prevention; cardiovascular and vascular health; digestive health; and urinary tract health. Many studies have shown the potential of cranberries to decrease risk of urinary tract infections in both children and adults. The proanthocyanadins in cranberries reduce the chances that harmful bacteria will adhere to the urinary tract wall and cause infection. Fresh cranberries may only be available from October through December, but many other forms, from frozen, dried and canned to juice and jam, are available year round. Fresh berries should be firm, plump and brightly colored with no brown spots. They’ll last up to two months refrigerated and freeze well. Stir cranberries into hot oatmeal; simmer them with wild rice or other whole-grain side dishes; bake them into cookies, tarts and muffins in place of raisins or chocolate chips; and toss them into salads for a pop of flavor and color. Donna T. from Bismarck, North Dakota, writes: “When the variety of fresh veggies is limited, I buy frozen. I do, however, like to keep store-purchased canned veggies in my pantry and use them in tight squeezes. I am confused by statements that canned veggies are highly nutritious and comparable to frozen. Comparing nutrition labels does not seem to support this statement. I would so appreciate your input.” Fresh veggies certainly are best if available — and if they don’t lose precious nutrients by overcooking or languishing too long in the fridge. But don’t feel bad about using frozen and canned varieties, too. They are picked at the peak of ripeness and generally processed right away, which helps maintain nutrients. In fact, the current 2020- 2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans encourage us to eat a variety of vegetables including “fresh, frozen and canned.” While frozen and canned veggies both have their place, some facts about canned goods may surprise you. For one, they may literally save your life in an emergency when refrigerated food is not available. What about sodium? According to the Canned Food Alliance (mealtime.org), salt or sodium is not used to preserve canned food. That’s done with heat and cooling. So it’s OK to look for lower-sodium versions if needed. Or you can simply drain and rinse beans and other canned vegetables to get rid of 40% or more of the added sodium. Interestingly, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the major sources of sodium in our food are pizza, cold cuts, cured meat, bread, rolls, burgers and sandwiches. Canned food is not even in the top 10. What about nutrients and other beneficial substances? Some, such as lycopene (the healthful red pigment in tomatoes) and beta carotene (which converts to vitamin A in the body), are actually enhanced in heat-processed canned vegetables. Vitamin C is another story. It is the least stable of all vitamins and is easily destroyed by heat and exposure to air. However, according to a 2021 review in the journal Antioxidants, new technologies can now preserve the vitamin C content in many canned foods. I have a can of 100% vegetable juice in my cupboard, and it contains more vitamin C than a medium orange. “The general conclusion of this review,” say these authors, “was that while canned foods are often perceived as less nutritious than fresh or frozen products, the research reveals that this is not always true.” Susan C. from Lynchburg, Virginia, responded to a recent column about feeding picky grandkids: “You said you always want to throw in a vegetable and that you saw a tomato on your counter. I was always told that a tomato is really a fruit. Isn’t that true?” Get local news delivered to your inbox!

Arsenal up to second after Kai Havertz goal sees off struggling IpswichA 17-year-old Wodonga boy who drove at 193kmh through the wrong side of a roundabout in a stolen car during a crime spree has been bailed. or signup to continue reading Police hold serious safety concerns about the boy, who was involved in a major crime wave before his arrest with a second youth about 40 days ago. "I think there's obviously extreme risk," Leading Senior Constable Les Hare told a court, noting the teenager was on "quite onerous bail" during his spree. "There is certainly an element of risk in here. "If he touches drugs or alcohol, it would seem that's multiplied. "Any bail conditions would need to address that." During the boy's offending, he stole multiple vehicles, drove dangerously, stole items from inside cars and outside homes, attended a house armed with a machete and fled police at high speed. The most serious incident involved a white BMW X5, which was stolen from outside a pool business near the intersection of Melbourne Road and Melrose Drive. The boy and another youth had been in a stolen white Toyota HiLux during the October 30 incident before stealing the unlocked BMW at 4.30pm. The boy drove off at a fast rate of speed in the BMW with the Toyota following. The cars were seen by police on Mayfair Drive, heading towards Lawrence Street. The boy yelled at an off-duty police custody officer near the intersection of Waratah Way and Primose Way and the boys fled officers after being seen on Magnolia Crescent. The BMW, which the second boy got into, had a tracking device and was seen by Albury police on Cassia Street about 6.14pm. A constable's foot was run over. The car's tyres were spiked by police on the Lincoln Causeway about 6.30pm and the car went onto the wrong side of the road, with another driver swerving to avoid a head-on. The teen continued towards Baranduda Boulevard, and went through the Beechworth-Wodonga Road roundabout on the wrong side of the road at 193kmh. The boy returned to Waratah Way in Wodonga and overtook on a blind corner after doubling the speed limit. The car was found on Croyland Street and the two boys were arrested while hiding in a Wodonga home on November 1. The 17-year-old had also driven a stolen Lancer, targeting unlocked vehicles in the Killara housing estate, on October 12. Tools were stolen from a Toyota HiLux on Callus Street and an Isuzu D-Max on Rooney Avenue. The two boys later attended a Vermont Street home in Wodonga, the 17-year-old armed with a machete, while a woman was asleep inside. Items were stolen. Tools, cash, cards and electronic items were taken from a car on Wren Court. A Mercedes Benz was stolen from a Warwick Road garage on October 15 and was found on Elgin Boulevard after being thrashed. A spate of other thefts from cars occurred in the following days, and the two boys stole alcohol from the Wodonga racecourse on October 25. The boy is an ice user and a youth justice worker agreed there was a risk in the teen being in the community, "especially with negative influences". Lawyer Nancy Battiato said the boy's six weeks locked up had been his first time in custody. "He understands if he puts one foot out of line, he'll be back in Parkville [youth jail] again," she said on Thursday, December 12. Magistrate Ian Watkins bailed the youth to a home near the Birallee shopping centre and ordered he return to court on January 10. "You're going to be on a very short lead between now and then," he said. DAILY Today's top stories curated by our news team.
