US stocks had a mixed session on Wednesday, with a rally in Google's parent company Alphabet spurring the tech-rich Nasdaq to end the day above 20,000 for the first time. The Dow Jones slipped 0.2 percent to close at 44,148, while the S&P 500 closed up 0.8 percent at 6,084. The Nasdaq was the day's big winner, jumping 1.8 percent to close at a new record of 20,034, after Alphabet reported it had made a breakthrough in quantum computing. The news sent the firm's share price soaring, with its class A shares closing up 5.5 percent. Investors were also digesting the news that consumer inflation ticked higher last month, largely in line with expectations. "The investors are reacting positively to the latest inflation data for two reasons," said Adam Sarhan from 50 Park Investments. "Number one, it gives the Fed more room to continue with easy money, cutting rates," he said. "And then number two, it allows more room for the economy to grow without the threat of inflation picking up." (AFP)
NoneThe best cornerback and the most productive off-ball linebacker. The Green Bay Packers will have to overcome these two absences to beat the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, because Jaire Alexander and Edgerrin Cooper have been ruled out by head coach Matt LaFleur. At least, the other side is pretty affected by injuries as well, since Brock Purdy and Nick Bosa have been ruled out. Kyle Shanahan announced Brandon Allen as the starting QB for Green Bay. pic.twitter.com/2znMyRRP2W Jaire Alexander (knee) Cornerback Jaire Alexander won't play on Sunday against the 49ers . On Friday, one day after Alexander revealed he had a torn PCL , LaFleur said he is out this week, even though placing him on the injured reserve is not a consideration at this point. Alexander initially got hurt during the Jacksonville Jaguars game. He missed the Detroit Lions game and was better after the bye week, practicing the entire week. However, after aggravating the issue against the Chicago Bears, he missed practice throughout this week, an indication that he wouldn't be available to play versus the 49ers. Jaire Alexander has missed three games in 2024, two because of a groin injury he suffered earlier this season, and the Lions game because of the knee. Without Jaire, the Packers are expected to start Keisean Nixon and Carrington Valentine against the 49ers. Safety Javon Bullard will play in the slot. The other cornerbacks on the 53-man roster are Eric Stokes, Corey Ballentine, and Robert Rochell. Rookies Kamal Hadden and Kalen King are on the practice squad. Edgerrin Cooper (hamstring) Rookie Edgerrin Cooper is out because of a hamstring injury he suffered during Wednesday's practice . He did not practice on Thursday and Friday. LaFleur said there is concern regarding Cooper's availability in Week 13 as well, because it's a short week before the Miami Dolphins game on Thanksgiving. The Packers' options at off-ball linebacker are Quay Walker, Isaiah McDuffie, Eric Wilson, and fellow rookie Ty'Ron Hopper. Former first-round pick Jamin Davis is on the practice squad. Colby Wooden (shoulder) Defensive lineman Colby Wooden missed the Detroit Lions game because of a shoulder injury. He practiced on a limited basis on Wednesday and Thursday, but was a full participant on Friday. Now, he's officially listed as questionable play. Defensive tackle Kenny Clark (toe), running back Josh Jacobs (quadricep/calf), guard Elgton Jenkins (rest), center Josh Myers (wrist), tackle Rasheed Walker (knee), and safety Evan Williams (hamstring) are all off the injury report and good to go. Other side There are significant concerns for the 49ers as well. Quarterback Brock Purdy and edge rusher Nick Bosa have both been ruled out by head coach Kyle Shanahan. Meanwhile, left tackle Trent Williams is questionable with an ankle injury — he didn't practice the entire week. Brandon Allen is expected to start at quarterback, and Josh Dobbs will serve as the backup. 49ers rule out vs Packers QB Brock Purdy DE Nick Bosa CB Charvarius Ward PR Jacob Cowing LB Tatum Bethune DT Kevin Givens Q LT Trent Williams C/G Jon Feliciano This article first appeared on A to Z Sports and was syndicated with permission.
BUENOS AIRES (AP) — Thiago Messi, the eldest son of the Argentina star, has made his debut in the “Newell’s Cup” tournament in the countryside city of Rosario. The 12-year-old Messi played with the No. 10 jersey of an Inter Miami youth team, which lost 1-0 on Monday to host Newell’s Old Boys in the traditional under-13 competition. The team also played Tuesday. Lionel Messi took his first steps as a footballer in the Argentinian club in Rosario, 300 kilometers (186 miles) northwest of capital Buenos Aires. Thiago's mother, Antonela Roccuzzo, and several members of his family, including grandparents Jorge Messi and Celia Cuccittini, were in the stands to watch him play. Lionel Messi did not attend. Thiago, who was substituted in the second half, played with his friend Benjamín Suárez, son of Uruguayan striker Luis Suárez, Messi's teammate and close friend at Barcelona and now at Inter Miami. Messi and Suárez are in Rosario after Inter Miami’s early elimination in the MLS playoffs. On Sunday, they watched a friendly game of Inter Miami's U13 team against Unión at the same sports complex. The youth tournament in Argentina brings together eight teams from North and South America. AP soccer: https://apnews.com/hub/soccer

A top US official sought to quell growing concern Sunday over reported drone sightings in the country's northeast, reiterating there was no known security threat as authorities monitor the situation. President Joe Biden's administration has faced mounting criticism for not clearly identifying origins of the objects seen hovering over parts of New York and New Jersey. The criticism has come even from Biden's own party, with top Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer calling Sunday for action to make it easier for federal, state and local authorities to work together to detect and if need be "bring down" any drone seen to pose a threat. Video footage of mysterious airborne phenomena recently has clogged social media, with spottings also reported in Maryland and Virginia. "Some of those drone sightings are, in fact, drones. Some are manned aircraft that are commonly mistaken for drones," Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said Sunday on ABC's "This Week" program. "But there's no question that drones are being sighted," he said, noting there are more than one million registered across the United States. "I want to assure the American public that we are on it," he said. "If we identify any foreign involvement or criminal activity, we will communicate with the American public accordingly. Right now, we are not aware of any." Even as Mayorkas sought to reassure the public, Boston police announced Sunday that two Massachusetts men had been arrested the previous night for allegedly conducting a "hazardous drone operation" near the city's Logan International Airport. State police were conducting a search for a third suspect, who authorities said fled the scene. Schumer, in a letter to Mayorkas Sunday, urged the Department of Homeland Security to immediately deploy special drone-detection technology across New York and New Jersey, since traditional radar struggles to detect such small objects. More from this section He also called for passage of legislation to explicitly authorize state and local law enforcement to work with federal agencies to detect and "bring down drones that threaten critical facilities or mass gatherings." Jim Himes, the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, meanwhile expressed frustration at the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) over its communications around the issue. "The answer 'we don't know' is not a good enough answer," he told "Fox News Sunday." "When people are anxious... people will fill a vacuum with, you know, their fears and anxieties and conspiracy theories," he said, calling for the FAA to hold public briefings. White House national security spokesman John Kirby had previously said the aircraft could be lawfully operated planes or helicopters mistaken for drones. "While there is no known malicious activity occurring, the reported sightings there do, however, highlight a gap in authorities," he said Thursday, calling for Congress to pass new legislation to "extend and expand existing counter-drone authorities." New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced Sunday that authorities had agreed to send a drone detection system to her state. "I am grateful for the support, but we need more. Congress must pass a law that will give us the power to deal directly with the drones," she said on X. On Friday, President-elect Donald Trump urged federal authorities to clearly identify the drones' origins. "Let the public know, and now. Otherwise, shoot them down!!!" he posted on social media. As the price of drones has fallen -- small quadcopter models with Wi-Fi camera capability can be purchased for as little as $40 -- their numbers and popularity have soared, making their presence in American skies a greater concern. acb/des/bbk/mlm
Zone focusing is an essential skill to learn, particularly for street, travel, and documentary photography. Even the latest autofocus technology on new expensive cameras can’t beat this method of getting photos quickly and in perfect focus. When you zone focus, you set your lens to manual focus mode—or preferably use a manual focus lens—and preset the focal distance using the distance scale on the lens barrel. You’re creating a zone where your subject will be in focus. Zone focusing is determined by the focal length you shoot with and the aperture you use. The wider your lens, the easier it is to use zone focus. The diagrams below demonstrate this. Let’s assume you focus at 10 ft in front of you. First, if you’re using the very popular and want to shoot at f/4, you actually have very little distance to work with, which means you need to be confident where 10 ft actually is and be really quick to get that shot. If someone is walking fast, that’s a challenge. If we go to f/11, we have more distance to work with, but still, you need to develop some skills here to frame up a shot and grab it. The other consideration is that a 50mm may not be wide enough to get enough of your subject in the frame at shorter distances. My preferred street and general walkabout photography lens is a 28mm. This wider lens gives me 11 ft of distance to work with at f/4, compared to just 3 ft the 50mm offers! With an aperture of f/11, look how much distance I have to work with now. I can let the subject get as close as 4 ft and still have acceptable focus. There are different hyperfocal distance calculators online that can give you an idea of what sort of range your chosen focal length and aperture combination gives you to work with, but they all seem to vary with their results. The best thing is to practice with your own camera and lens. It doesn't take long to figure it out. I find myself constantly looking ahead of me when I go out now—even without a camera—thinking, "Is that subject 10 ft away?" I've programmed my brain to recognize various distances. Not having to worry about focusing allows us to enjoy the experience of photography so much more. We can concentrate on what’s happening and how best to compose a shot to capture a unique moment, reacting stealthily and quickly to compelling scenes without relying on the camera’s autofocus system. Zone focusing is usually discussed in relation to people moving in street photography, but it can be used for all sorts of situations. Even shooting travel photos of fairly static objects, like these fishing boats below, can benefit. I just pointed the camera and framed the shot without the worry of a focus point hunting to find focus. The best way to start zone focusing is to stay static. Maybe sit on a bench and focus on a spot on the ground where you think people will walk and be nicely within the frame. This gets you familiar with what your chosen distance looks like. You can use visual cues, like a crack in the pavement or a lamppost that someone might walk past, to set your focus zone. Once you’ve mastered that, you’ll find yourself walking around constantly trying to figure out what 6 ft or 10 ft in front of you looks like so you can grab shots while walking or while your subject is walking. Even though many street photographers tend to shoot moving subjects while moving themselves, I think it’s best to stop walking if you see an interesting scene in front of you. Even with a shutter speed of 1/1,000 or 1/2,000—my preferred speeds—this does not always result in sharp images. Moving or not, it’s all about practice because it is a skill that needs to be learned to get the best results. Here, I'm slowly walking and my subject is static. To get a sharp image, I shoot with a shutter speed of at least 1/1,000 s. Many modern lenses no longer have a distance scale because they’re designed to be used as autofocus lenses, optimized for the camera’s autofocus tracking technology. Manual third-party lenses are the solution, or older lenses, which have the distance markings we need. With lenses in general, there’s a trend to buy fast primes like f/1.2 these days, with many people new to photography being led to believe the more “bokeh” in a photo, the better it is. This, of course, is nonsense. If you use one for zone focusing wide open, good luck! Because zone focusing requires a good amount of depth of field, this means slower lenses, which means you don’t need to spend a lot of money. My primes are f/2.8, yet I rarely shoot wide open. f/5.6 is my minimum aperture, with a preference for f/8 or f/11. And as a bonus, those slower lenses are smaller and lighter too—perfect for street photography. Are you using zone focusing? William Blair downgrades Ulta on concerns over beauty category recoveryNEW YORK -- Federal lawmakers say they will push for new measures in Congress on Monday to track down the mysterious drones flying across the Tri-State Area and the country . Gov. Kathy Hochul says federal partners are deploying a state-of-the-art detection system to New York state. On Sunday, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said he's requesting the Department of Homeland Security deploy a detection system like one known as ROBIN. "Which use not a linear line of sight but 360-degree technology that has a much better chance of detecting these drones. We're asking DHS to bring them to the New York-New Jersey area," Schumer said. "Would you consider banning sale of them from some of the companies that make the drones?" CBS News New York's Lisa Rozner asked New York's senior senator. "There are hundreds of companies all over the globe that make drones. We don't know which ones these are. This radar will help us find out which they are and then we can go talk to the companies," Schumer said. Rozner asked DHS if it would grant Schumer's request for a new detection system. A rep responded by saying the agency only responds to congressional inquiries directly via "official channels." Hochul said Sunday the state needs Congress to pass the a bill which would give New York the authority to detect, track or even destroy unmanned aircraft systems. That legislation has been stuck in committees, but Schumer's office said with him as co-sponsor now, it could pass by the end of the year. On CBS' Face The Nation , Republican Congressman Mike Waltz of Florida said defense agencies are pointing the finger at each other and under President-elect Donald Trump. "We need to take a hard look at our homeland defenses. President Trump has talked about an iron dome for America that needs to include drones as well, not just adversarial actions like hypersonic missiles. We need to have an all-of-the-above protection of U.S. airspace," Waltz said. The FBI says it has received approximately 5,000 tips on the aircraft sightings , and of those, less than 100 leads were deemed worthy of further investigation. The DHS secretary said on ABC This Week that the agency knows of "no foreign involvement." The Department of Defense also said the military is "prohibited from conducting intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance operations in the U.S." The South Bronx is now part of the multiple places in the Northeast where clusters of drones have been spotted . "They're huge, too, so I don't know what's going on," resident Jeff Garcia said. "I believe it's sabotage because all of a sudden we getting all of these drones coming from somewhere," resident Donna McCoy said. "Is it like recording people? Or they just going around sitting there looking at you?" JJ Mines-Evans added. Lisa Rozner joined CBS News New York in 2017. She covers a wide range of stories.
DENVER — So you're the most valuable player of that annual Thanksgiving Day backyard flag football game. Or played tackle football on any level. Or ran track. Or dabbled in basketball. Or toyed with any sport, really. Well, this may be just for you: USA Football is holding talent identification camps all over the country to find that next flag football star. It's "America's Got Talent" meets "American Idol," with the stage being the field and the grand prize a chance to compete for a spot on a national team. Because it's never too early to start planning for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, where flag football will make its Summer Games debut. Know this, though — it's not an easy team to make. The men's and women's national team rosters are at "Dream Team" status given the men's side has captured six of the last seven world championships and the women three in a row. To remain on top, the sport's national governing body is scouring every football field, park, track, basketball court and gym to find hidden talent to cultivate. USA Football has organized camps and tryouts from coast to coast for anyone ages 11 to 23. There are more than a dozen sites set up so far, ranging from Dallas (Sunday) to Chicago (Dec. 14) to Tampa (March 29) to Los Angeles (TBD) and the Boston area (April 27), where it will be held at Gillette Stadium, home of the New England Patriots. The organization has already partnered with the NFL on flag football initiatives and programs. The numbers have been through the roof, with engagement on social media platforms increasing by 86% since flag football was announced as an Olympic invitational sport in October 2023. The participation of boys and girls ages 6 to 17 in flag football last year peaked at more than 1.6 million, according to USA Football research. "We pride ourselves on elevating the gold standard across the sport," said Eric Mayes, the managing director of the high performance and national teams for USA Football. "We want to be the best in the world — and stay the best in the world." Flag football was one of five new sports added to the LA28 program. The already soaring profile of American football only figures to be enhanced by an Olympic appearance. Imagine, say, a few familiar faces take the field, too. Perhaps even NFL stars such as Tyreek Hill or Patrick Mahomes, maybe even past pro football greats donning a flag belt for a country to which they may have ties. Soon after flag football's inclusion, there was chatter of NFL players possibly joining in on the fun. Of course, there are logistical issues to tackle before their inclusion at the LA Olympics, which open July 14, 2028. Among them, training camp, because the Olympics will be right in the middle of it. The big question is this: Will owners permit high-priced players to duck out for a gold-medal pursuit? No decisions have yet been made on the status of NFL players for the Olympics. For now, it's simply about growing the game. There are currently 13 states that sanction girls flag football as a high school varsity sport. Just recently, the Pittsburgh Steelers and Philadelphia Eagles helped pave the way to get it adopted in Pennsylvania. Around the world, it's catching on, too. The women's team from Japan took third at the recent word championships, while one of the best players on the planet is Mexico quarterback Diana Flores. "Could flag football globally become the new soccer? That's something to aspire to," said Stephanie Kwok, the NFL's vice president of flag football. This type of flag football though, isn't your Thanksgiving Day game with family and friends. There's a learning curve. And given the small roster sizes, versatility is essential. Most national team members need to be a version of Colorado's two-way standout and Heisman hopeful Travis Hunter. Forget bump-and-run coverage, too, because there's no contact. None. That took some adjusting for Mike Daniels, a defensive back out of West Virginia who earned a rookie minicamp invitation with the Cleveland Browns in 2017. "If a receiver is running around, I'm thinking, 'OK, I can kind of bump him here and there and nudge him,'" Daniels explained. "They're like, 'No, you can't.' I'm just like, 'So I'm supposed to let this guy just run?!' I really rebelled at the idea at first. But you learn." The competition for an Olympic roster spot is going to be fierce because only 10 players are expected to make a squad. The best 10 will earn it, too, as credentials such as college All-American or NFL All-Pro take a backseat. "I would actually love" seeing NFL players try out, said Daniels, who's also a personal trainer in Miami. "I'm not going to let you just waltz in here, thinking, 'I played NFL football for five years. I'm popular. I have a huge name.' I'm still better than you and I'm going to prove it — until you prove otherwise." Around the house, Bruce Mapp constantly swivels his hips when turning a hallway corner or if his daughter tries to reach for a hug. It's his way of working on avoiding a "defender" trying to snare the flag. That approach has earned the receiver out of Coastal Carolina four gold medals with USA Football. The 31-year-old fully plans on going for more gold in Los Angeles. "You grow up watching Usain Bolt (win gold) and the 'Redeem Team' led by Kobe Bryant win a gold medal, you're always thinking, 'That's insane.' Obviously, you couldn't do it in your sport, because I played football," said Mapp, who owns a food truck in the Dallas area. "With the Olympics approaching, that (gold medal) is what my mind is set on." It's a common thought, which is why everything — including talent camps — starts now. "Everybody thinks, 'Yeah, the U.S. just wins,'" Daniels said. "But we work hard all the time. We don't just walk in. We don't just get off the bus thinking, 'We're going to beat people.'" The presence of an old graveyard where victims of the Bulli mining disaster were buried does not have to stop a Woonona church from redeveloping the site. Subscribe now for unlimited access . Login or signup to continue reading The Woonona Presbyterian Church has lodged a development application with Wollongong City Council to demolish parts of the buildings on site and enlarge the existing structure that has been in use since 1916. "The building no longer meets the requirements of the congregation," the statement of environmental effects said. "Consequently the Church is proposing alterations and additions so that the building more closely reflects the needs of its worshippers. In this regard, if more than 150 people attend a service then they are no longer able to comfortably fit within the existing church building." As part of the proposed development, the gravel and dirt car park on the western end of the site - next to Woonona Public School - will be formalised to create 23 spaces. The parking area is used by those going to church and also parents dropping off and picking up children from the school. This car park has been built over the site of a cemetery that was decommissioned in 1937 and the headstones later removed. An archaeological report submitted as part of the development application stated that at least nine victims of the 1887 Bulli mine disaster were buried on the site of the Woonona church. Overall, the report said it was unclear just how many people were buried there. The burial plan showed 279 plots though it wasn't clear whether they had all been used. The report stated that there were 102 people known "beyond reasonable doubt" to have been buried there. The archeological study did raise concerns about any excavation work done at the site. "The excavation would likely result in the removal of upper levels of burials, including grave cuts and grave furniture, as well as the removal of the headstones, which were buried in the 1980s," it stated. "Overall, the proposed works would result in a major negative impact to finite historical archaeological resources of local significance relating to the use of the study area as a Presbyterian Church and Cemetery." The report did identify that archaeological tests and salvage excavations could provide a "partial mitigation" of the construction impact. "The potential archaeological resources and information gathered from the excavation of the upper levels of the graves and of the buried headstones would be able to allow us to answer important research questions relating to information that is not otherwise available from any other site or source," the report stated. "The knowledge gained from the identification of the location of the graves would therefore outweigh the potential harm caused by the excavation works. Therefore, the works would contribute to our understanding of the cemetery, resulting in the partial mitigation of the potential impacts." The development application is on public exhibition until February 4.
