Read unlimited articles for free today: Already have an account? Community connections, the space in the downtown Millennium Library that provides support to the homeless population, will close at the end of this month when city funding comes to an end. The municipal government hasn’t included funding in the 2025 budget released Wednesday. Finance committee chairman Jeff Browaty said the community connections space posed a safety concern for library staff and the public. “We continue to see some challenges at the downtown Millennium Library, most recently involving an edged weapon,” he said, adding the funding was always due to expire in accordance with the city’s multi-year budget. Winnipeg police reported on Dec. 1 that a woman was arrested after she tried to take a knife into the library. After she was denied entry, she pulled out the knife and threatened two male security guards, police said at the time. The move to end funding was called “extremely short-sighted” by Manitoba Library Association program coordinator Kirsten Wurmann. “These folks come into the library whether community connections exist or not,” Wurmann said. “It actually makes the entire library safer for the community and for the staff.” The annual cost of the hub is $614,000. Its staff includes 4.2 full-time equivalent library staff, a librarian, two community safety hosts and three part-time library service assistants. Their contracts will not be renewed. Community safety hosts are trained in security and trauma crisis work. Wurmann said the space is an alternative for people who do not want to enter the library through metal detectors or need to spend more time with employees seeking information. From October 2023 to September 2024, the space handled 24,296 information requests, while all other Millennium Library service desks combined handled 29,701 requests. The quarterly report shows all Winnipeg libraries recorded 384 safety incidents from July to September. The Millennium library accounted for 211 of those encounters. There were 112,181 visits to the downtown library from July to September — up from 108,227 visits from April to June. Wurmann said a library needs to reflect the community that it is in and eliminating the space will only hurt downtown. “It just doesn’t make sense and it goes against everything that the city has said that (it is) committed to,” she said, referencing the city’s poverty reduction strategy that calls the space valuable. Community connections staff made 928 referrals to outside agencies and resources from October 2023 to September 2024. Winnipeg Jets Game Days On Winnipeg Jets game days, hockey writers Mike McIntyre and Ken Wiebe send news, notes and quotes from the morning skate, as well as injury updates and lineup decisions. Arrives a few hours prior to puck drop. Browaty said safety hosts will continue to be stationed in the library to handle social service requests. Coun. Evan Duncan has called for the space to move out of the library due to the safety risk to the public, but Coun. Cindy Gilroy said the move would be wrongheaded. “I’ve witnessed it myself. Issues are de-escalated before they arise in the library and a lot of the times, the security guards just do not have the same level of approach and de-escalating that the community connectors have,” Gilroy said. Gord Delbridge, president of the Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 500 which represents library workers, called on other levels of government to help pay for and expand the space. nicole.buffie@freepress.mb.ca Nicole Buffie is a multimedia producer who reports for the city desk. Contrary to assertions by some so-called experts who have been prattling all week that Dele Farotimi wrote what he could not logically substantiate in his book Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System, this was a pre-meditated confrontation. Having depleted the legal means to get justice, he wrote to re-litigate the case in the court of public opinion. He seems calculatedly driven by the Yoruba proverb that says no one dies at the same spot they uttered blasphemy. In the time between your speaking and being punished, much can happen to change social dynamics. From the potpourri of events in the past week, Farotimi got what he wanted. One cannot say the same for Afe Babalola who, by now, would have realised that giving a traducer what they want is not the most prudent battle move. My reading is that Farotimi knew Babalola’s peculiar weakness and worked it to advantage. I will get to that momentarily. The blowback from this case is another instance that hopefully teaches our elites to rein in their tendency to exploit the warped Nigerian justice system that allows criminal defamation as a legal recourse. Criminal defamation might be legal, but it is unjust. It is a law that exists to regulate the differentials of power and access, one of the many ways rich people further privatise public resources. Since lawmakers are too compromised to expunge the law and law enforcers incapable of the reflexivity that will enlighten them on the stupidity of using state resources to fight an individual over another’s integrity, the best we can do for now is pressure the entitled “big man” not to take that path. In a criminal case, the prosecutor investigates to convict. The Nigerian police, perennially short of resources, spares no expense when sent to prosecute criminal defamation on behalf of another narcissist. Why should the state do that on behalf of an ordinary individual? Babalola, especially, is a man of ample resources, who can afford to fight for his reputation on his own dime. So, on Friday, Babalola’s legal team held a press conference in Ado Ekiti. Among several things, the lead lawyer Owoseni Ajayi said was: “Those pushing Farotimi are not his friends. By the time they led him to the dungeon, he would realise they were deceiving him. Let me advise his family members to apologise to Aare. Aare Babalola is a builder, not interested in destroying Farotimi.” I was intrigued by what he said it takes for them to call off the police hounds. If someone injured your reputation, and that reputation is truly worth the price you placed on it, why would you not be interested in watching them destroyed? Why would Ajayi, so sure of their victory that he boldly asserted that the only possible conclusion to the case is the dungeon, want to settle for the cheap spectacle of Farotimi’s family members with their clasped hands rolling on the floor and begging? What sealed the picture for me was an article by Kenneth Ikonne where he, like Ajayi, also urged Farotimi to go “beg” Babalola. According to Ikonne, he had won a preliminary objection against Babalola’s suit—which a lawyer is supposed to do, right? —but he was so intimidated by his own victory against the legal giant that he had to go beg Babalola. While Ikonne’s adulating article drips with flattery, it also unwittingly reveals a kabiyesi-complex. It is an attitude that revels in watching other humans’ heads perpetually bowed in servile reverence so they can repay your self-denigration with overwhelming niceness. Babalola seems like a man who likes to be liked, an attitude is consistently weakening because you must always play nice. Please note that there is a vast difference between being nice because you are a decent human and niceness as manipulation, a means to seduce others into becoming your subject. People of the latter category will take you to the top of the pinnacle, show you the extent of their power and glory, and nicely offer you a portion if only you would bend obsequious knees before them. If you refuse, they will then kick your calves until you fall on your face. Babalola is so used to a world where junior lawyers who defeat him in court still come to his Ado Ekiti palace to prostrate before him that Farotimi’s boldness to confront him must have been jarring. He resorted to his standard weapons of warfare, but as he must have also found out in the past week, the battle terrain has changed. Even if he wins the case, what will be the social value of a reputation held up by the courts? If Farotimi begs him as his lawyer and others have enjoined, what is done cannot be undone. Related News [UPDATED] Defamation: Court denies human rights activist Dele Farotimi bail Defamation: Farotimi gets N50m bail, to submit passport Defamation: Farotimi gets N50m bail, to submit passport However, this goes down, I commend Farotimi’s boldness. We all agree that the Nigerian judiciary is rotten, but the logic of producing rational evidence has made it virtually impossible to progress beyond merely abstract observations. Until we begin to mention names and point accusing fingers at specific people, the issues will remain intractable. Statistically, Nigerian judges and magistrates are the highest receivers of bribes in 2023, beating even the Customs/Immigration! This is according to the NBS. Those who facilitated these transactions are not ghosts. We have all been witnesses to the several instances where retiring judges have severely deplored the rot in the judiciary. It is amusing to see some people pretending Farotimi revealed what they did not already know. Our society maintains an overly reverential attitude toward people who have money and power, and are elderly. When a person combines all three, we are virtually cowed before their almighty presence. Otherwise, why can we not ask, if defamation is an offence that supposedly lessens someone’s reputational worth, what exactly would constitute it in the case of persons who have practised law in morally decrepit and with progressively weakened institutions like Nigeria for 60-plus years? Which of the atrocities that presently bedevils the country does not have the hands of the so-called learned class in it? This is not to disparage the legal profession or caricature lawyers, but we cannot talk about what is wrong with Nigeria today without the role lawyers have played in vandalising the temple of justice. From the so-called “legal luminaries” who—through endless frivolous election petitions—rendered democracy incoherent to the ones with the “SAN” appendage to their names who fraternise with politicians, they remade the country in their amoral image. We were all here when a partner in the firm of a high-profile lawyer solicited the client of another, saying their principal’s political influence would “significantly switch things in favour” of the prospective client. While that woman was disowned and eventually debarred, it was a moment of self-revelation as to how the justice system operates. Big names in the legal system do not necessarily correspond with a deep knowledge of the law. It just means they know which judge to buy and which string to pull. We witnessed a lawmaker publicly admitting that his judge’s wife helped his colleagues win their various cases. In a serious country, every case that a woman adjudicated would have been recalled and scrutinised, but this is Nigeria. Nothing ever happens here. This is the utterly compromised ecosystem in which Babalola has practised law and thrived to the point he built a magnificent university. He was also a lawyer and confidant to former President Olusegun Obasanjo, whose administration reputation was thoroughly corrupt. Nobody, not even the staunchest of his defenders, has said of Farotimi’s allegations that “it cannot possibly be true”. What they all say is, “It cannot be proven,” and that is telling enough. Given the contradictions of his profession, Babalola should have been circumspect enough to not jump into a public contest over his reputation. He seems to me like a man who has invested in being nice just so that he would not be remembered as a villain in Nigeria’s story. Now he is no longer the man with the carefully curated legacy who set out to redeem his image but the one who proved his critic right.Fox News Flash top sports headlines are here. For the better part of the past century-plus, Rotax has been one of the most prominent names in the small aircraft engine market. While the company has changed its base of operation several times since its founding in 1920, Rotax has never wavered in its dedication to producing powerful, reliable engines for vessels like light aircraft and single-engine airplanes . If Rotax bosses have their way, the company will no doubt continue in that endeavor throughout the Century ahead. Over the years, Rotax has developed and manufactured dozens of different engines that have helped light aircraft enthusiasts and airplane home builders across the globe take to the skies. Of course, the aviation game is a far cry from what it was 100 years ago. As times have changed, so too have the power needs of even the smallest of aircraft. Rotax has, in turn, continued to refine its own engines to meet the needs of the times. The company has expanded the reach of its engine market, having developed powerful builds for other small vehicles like snowmobiles, jet skis, and side-by-side UTVs. They've even powered KTM motorcycles . At the moment, the manufacturer continues to build engines to meet the needs of vehicles in all of those market segments. And yes, a few of those engines rank among the most powerful Rotax has ever made. Given Rotax's long history of manufacturing engines for aircraft, it seems only fitting to begin with one of the more powerful offerings in its current lineup of builds made to give flight to light airplanes. Among the offerings in that line, the 915 iS engines are pretty punchy, to say the least, offering light aircraft aviators an impressive 141 horsepower at 104 Kw. Most Rotax aircraft engines are largely designed for 600+ weight class CS-23 and CS-24 models, and the 915 iS models are no different. This four-stroke piston build also boasts four air and liquid-cooled cylinders and is touted alongside other Rotax engines as boasting best-in-class power-to-weight ratio. Yes, Rotax's 915 iS engine is also equipped with a turbocharger, which is largely responsible for its robust power output. The engine also offers 12 or 24-volt electric starter options and packs a 24v power supply that can produce up to 800w of energy, leaving plenty of room to power vital instruments and potentially even an extra gadget or two. The 915 iS also comes with an Engine Management System (EMS) that should help with fuel economy and overall performance, an option that will no doubt be of use when operating at a maximum altitude of 23,000 ft. And with an estimated TBO (Time Between Overhaul) of 1200 hours, this Rotax should safely keep your plane in the sky for years before it's time for a revamp. Just FYI — the 915 iS is not currently the most powerful engine in Rotax's small aircraft line. That title actually belongs to the 916 iS/c, which, at a surface level, has a lot in common with the 915 iS. For instance, the 916 is also a four-stroke piston design with four air and liquid cooled cylinders. It also comes with redundant electronic fuel injection and a turbocharger, as well as an EMS, an electric starter, and a 24-volt power supply that might allow for extra creature comfort in the cockpit. Apart from those similarities, the 916 iS/c is a very different animal, and, unlike the two-seat friendly 915 iS, it is designed with 4-seat aircraft in mind. Yes, that means the 916 iS/c requires a little more power than its counterpart and is capable of pushing the ponies up to 160 HP while producing up to 142 ft-lb of torque. Perhaps more impressive than that uptick in power is that Rotax's engineers managed to deliver it without adding too much weight, with the 916 iS/c clocking in at 85.8 kg (or about 189 lbs) to the 915's 82.2 kg (or 181 pounds). Those stats have led Rotax to label its potent 916 iS/c as both a "milestone" and a "masterpiece" of small engine ingenuity. It's easy enough to see why they're so proud of the build, particularly as it also boasts a TBO of 2,000 hours. As noted, even as the aviation arena remains a sweet spot for Rotax, the company has indeed looked away from the skies to help power vessels bound for both land and sea over the years. As for vehicles in the former category, at a whopping 240 horsepower, the engine Rotax designed to power Can-Am's Maverick R side-by-side UTV — which, for the record, is dramatically different than an ATV — is easily one of the punchiest it's ever made. In fact, according to Can-Am, Rotax's turbocharged 240 HP 999T power plant is actually providing industry-leading power to its Maverick off-roader. The engine's dynamic output is only bolstered by the inclusion of Rotax's 54 mm tubeless turbocharger, and the build's actuated wastegate — a device that helps regulate the turbocharger's boost pressure — is apparently a first for the side-by-side sector. On top of that, the inline three-cylinder, four-stroke, fuel-injected engine is also the first of Rotax's off-road power plants to utilize a seven-speed Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT), which is available in automatic or paddle shifter. Coupled with the engine's dedicated drive modes, it makes it possible to tailor the driving experience to whatever you need on the day. With a trove of design features meant to bolster the engine's durability in the wild, you should be able to tackle whatever high mountain roads or dusty dunes you tackle in your Maverick R without worrying too much about damaging the powerful engine, giving it all that get-up-and-go. With Rotax providing some serious punch to the land-bound Maverick R, the manufacturer has developed an even more powerful engine for vessels primarily used in the open waters of the world. Said vessels are made by Sea-Doo, who has been manufacturing personal watercraft (PWC) for the thrill-loving masses since 1968. Despite a lengthy history in the water sports arena, the Sea-Doo may have reached its peak when it recently began offering the Rotax 1630 ACE 325 engine in certain jet skis, with that engine capable of producing a staggering 325 horsepower. At present, that powerful Rotax is only available as an option for three models of Sea-Doo: the RXP-X, the RXT-X, and the GTX Limited. As for that 325 HP, per Sea-Doo, it is indeed a record-setter in the personal watercraft game, with the purpose-built 1630 ACE 325 currently standing as the most powerful engine ever built for a PWC. Just for reference regarding the engine's power capabilities, the 1630 ACE 325 is capable of providing a Sea-Doo with legitimately head-spinning acceleration, going 0 to 60 mph in just 3.4 seconds. It is, of course, worth wondering whether or not your average Sea-Doo rider actually needs or can even safely handle the sort of acceleration the Rotax engine delivers. But if you're a seasoned PWC enthusiast looking for the ultimate ride or a racer looking for a competitive edge on the water, the 1630 ACE 325 should more than suit your needs.( MENAFN - IANS) New Delhi, Dec 25 (IANS) Prime Minister Narendra Modi remembered former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee as the "architect of India's transition" and lauded his contributions towards Political stability, nation-building, and good governance on the occasion of Vajpayee's 100th birth anniversary. Born on December 15, 1994, in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, Vajpayee, a poet and politician, served as the Prime Minister of India for three terms -- first for a term of 13 days in 1996, second, for a period of 13 months from 1998 to 1999, third, a full term from 1999 to 2004 -- becoming the first non-Congress Prime Minister to serve a full term in the office. He left an indelible mark on the country's political and social fabric. His birth anniversary is also celebrated as 'Good Governance Day' in India. In a heartfelt blog post, PM Modi described December 25 as a special day for the nation, marking the centenary of Vajpayee's birth. "Today, 25th December is a very special day for all of us. Our nation marks the 100th Jayanti of our beloved former Prime Minister, Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ji. He stands tall as a statesman who continues to inspire countless people," he wrote. Highlighting Vajpayee's pivotal role in shaping India's future, PM Modi wrote, "Our nation will always be grateful to Atal Ji for being the architect of India's transition into the 21st century. When he took oath as PM in 1998, our nation had passed through a period of political instability. In about nine years, we had seen four Lok Sabha elections." "The people of India were getting impatient and sceptical about governments being able to deliver. It was Atal Ji who turned this tide by providing stable and effective governance. Coming from humble roots, he realised the struggles of the common citizen and the transformative power of effective governance." PM Modi highlighted Vajpayee's achievements across sectors, stating, "His era marked a gigantic leap in the world of Information Technology, telecom, and communications. The NDA Government under Atal Ji made the first serious attempt to make technology accessible to the common citizens. Even today, most people recall the Golden Quadrilateral Project, which connected the length and breadth of India. Equally notable were the efforts to enhance local connectivity through initiatives like the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana. His government also laid the groundwork for the Delhi Metro, which stands as a world-class infrastructure project." Touching upon Vajpayee's contributions to social reforms, PM Modi said, "An initiative like the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan highlights how Atal Ji dreamt of building an India where modern education is accessible to people across the nation, particularly for the poor and marginalised sections. At the same time, his government presided over many economic reforms which set the stage for India's economic surge after decades of stagnation." PM Modi also cited the 1998 Pokhran nuclear tests as an example of Vajpayee's resolute leadership. "On 11th May, India conducted the Pokhran tests, known as Operation Shakti. Any ordinary leader would have buckled under international pressure, but Atal Ji was made differently. India stood firm and resolute, conducting another set of tests on 13th May. This was a message to the world that India would no longer buckle under threats or pressure," he wrote. Despite facing international sanctions, Vajpayee articulated India's right to safeguard its sovereignty while advocating for world peace. PM Modi further noted, "Atal Ji presided over the creation of the NDA, redefining coalitions in Indian politics. He brought people together, making the NDA a force for development and national progress. His Parliamentary brilliance was evident throughout his political journey." Slamming the Congress, PM Modi remarked, "As Prime Minister, he blunted the criticisms of the Opposition with style and substance. Despite spending much of his career in Opposition, he carried no bitterness, even though the Congress stooped to calling him a traitor. He preferred to resign in 1996 rather than resort to horse-trading. In 1999, despite losing by one vote, he upheld integrity and returned with a resounding mandate." Recalling Vajpayee's commitment to democracy, PM Modi wrote, "He was deeply impacted by the martyrdom of Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee and was a pillar of the anti-Emergency movement. He agreed to merge the Jan Sangh into the Janata Party in 1977, prioritising the Constitution over personal or party interests." The Prime Minister also praised Vajpayee's pride in Indian culture, citing his speech in Hindi at the United Nations as External Affairs Minister, which showcased his immense pride in India's heritage and identity. Calling Vajpayee's persona "magnetic," PM Modi wrote, "A prolific writer and poet, he used words to inspire, provoke thought, and offer solace. His poetry, reflective of his inner struggles and hopes for the nation, continues to resonate with people across generations." Concluding his tribute, the Prime Minister acknowledged Vajpayee's foundational contributions to the BJP and his unwavering dedication to ideology over power. "On his 100th Jayanti, let us rededicate ourselves to realising his ideals and fulfilling his vision for India. Atal Ji's unwavering belief in the potential of our nation continues to inspire us to aim higher and work harder," he wrote. Rape allegation against Jay-Z won’t impact NFL's relationship with music mogul, Goodell says IRVING, Texas (AP) — NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell says a rape allegation against rapper Jay-Z won’t impact the NFL's relationship with the music mogul. Jay-Z's company Roc Nation has produced some of the NFL’s entertainment presentations including the Super Bowl halftime show. A woman who previously sued Sean “Diddy” Combs alleging she was raped at an awards show after-party in 2000 amended the lawsuit Sunday to include an allegation that Jay-Z was also at the party and participated in the sexual assault. Jay-Z says the rape allegation made against him is part of an extortion attempt. The NFL teamed up with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation in 2019 for events and social activism. Ohio politician proposes make flag planting a felony after fight in Michigan rivalry game An Ohio politician has seen enough flag planting. Republican state Rep. Josh Williams said Wednesday on social media he's introducing a bill to make flag planting in sports a felony in the state. His proposal comes after the Nov. 30 fight at the Michigan-Ohio State rivalry football game when the Wolverines beat the Buckeyes 13-10 and then attempted to plant their flag at midfield. A fight ensued and police had to use pepper spray to disperse the players. Former Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield famously planted a flag in the middle of the field at Ohio State after the Sooners beat the Buckeyes in 2017. Gastineau confronts Favre in documentary for his 'dive' on Strahan's record-breaking sack Former New York Jets star Mark Gastineau confronted Brett Favre last year at a memorabilia show and angrily accused the Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback of deliberately going down on a record-breaking sack. The tense exchange is shown in the new ESPN 30 for 30 documentary “The New York Sack Exchange." It chronicles the Jets’ fearsome foursome defensive line of the 1980s that included Gastineau. Gastineau set an NFL record with 22 sacks in 1984, but Pro Football Hall of Famer Michael Strahan broke the mark when he sacked Favre in 2002 in a game between the Giants and Packers. Many have accused Favre of purposely taking the sack so Strahan could set the single-season record with 22 1/2. What happens next with Alex Jones' Infowars? Albertsons sues Kroger for failing to win approval of their proposed supermarket merger Kroger and Albertsons’ plan for the largest U.S. supermarket merger in history has crumbled. The two companies have accused each other of not doing enough to push their proposed alliance through, and Albertsons pulled out of the $24.6 billion deal on Wednesday. The bitter breakup came the day after a federal judge in Oregon and a state judge in Washington issued injunctions to block the merger, saying that combining the two grocery chains could reduce competition and harm consumers.
